Car Hauling Dispatcher & Auto Dispatching Tips Using Central Dispatch

  • Looking for help using Central Dispatch. Welcome back again to Auto Transport Intel. I'm Jay, the Car Hauling Dispatcher. Today, I'm working on booking for my driver John of Paladin Enterprises. He is located in Ohio and we're looking at going to Houston with his 3-car wedge.
    I heard there are some good paying cars going to Houston, but I have no idea what it's going to be like booking him out of Houston. Because of the massive hurricane damage and flooding, I'm imagining a lot of INOPS will need to be moved, so I already asked John if his winch was working.
    Let's go ahead and log into Central Dispatch - the #1 Load Board for Car Haulers. We know that we're picking up in Youngstown, Ohio and in a previous video I talked about how it can be better to begin a search 50 miles around the pickup city. For delivery, my custom is to conduct a regional search of states. In this case, that will be Texas and Louisiana, so as to get the Houston area as well as Baton Rouge. #carhaulingdispatcher #autodispatchingtips #centraldispatch
    However, I'm actually going to break my normal rule on this one. Since I heard Houston is in such great need of cars, I'm going to do a 50-mile search around Houston for delivery. It is now Thursday mid-afternoon and so I'm booking for Monday pickups. (I don't want to see anything ready after Monday). Upon searching, I actually got 26 results, which when searching city-to-city long distance is truly quite rare.
    In fact, just going to Houston, I'm seeing several cars listed for over 70 cents per mile. Since 50 cents per mile is the known industry average, that's really good. Because supply is up, the differentiating criteria for booking loads will come down to the height and weight of the vehicles as well as the payment terms. Since I'm booking a three-car wedge trailer, I can really only take one big truck.
    I did find a 2015 crew cab short bed paying over $1,000 so I immediately called the broker. On the phone, he told me the customer sounds ready to just drive it himself so the load is no longer available. Dispatching tip: go ahead and give your phone number and information (just in case they change their mind). I also found a 1993 Land Cruiser listed for $950, so while I'm calling I check the curb weight and length just so I know the vehicle specs for sure.
    I also heard that getting out of Houston is pretty dicey. It's certainly not the same as it is going in - so I need to check that out now instead of waiting. By the way, I can't believe Central Dispatch doesn't have a 'Backhaul Search' selection. Wouldn't that be so easy to create?
    Well, it turns out that the 'reverse city-to-city' search results are zero, so now it's time to get creative. It's a good thing we have several days of time to figure this out because if we didn't have time we might have to rethink what we're doing. To be specific, the main reason I know we have time is that I always ask the driver, "When do you plan on picking up and when do you want to be back home?" As a dispatcher, you need to ask that - every time, right away - so you know how many days you have for your return trip. If you don't ask a driver this and you start booking and he suddenly tells you, "Oh, yeah, I've got to be back early for my anniversary," then you've got a big problem. As they say in the movies, that's what I call "a tight spot." Remember: talk to your dispatcher. Don't keep secrets from each other. It's not going to end well.
    Alright, so the rates are definitely lower getting out of Houston (plus there really are a lot of INOPs). Therefore, the key to successfully booking out of Houston is to pay attention and always be checking for new loads. In the movie "Glengarry Glenross," Alec Baldwin's character writes "ABC" on the chalkboard and he says, "To be a successful salesman, 'Always Be Closing'". To me, to be a successful dispatcher you need to Always Be Checking - for new loads.
    This should be common sense! When you know that you're going to be booking from a city that's going to be difficult to book out of - Always Be Checking! That doesn't mean from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. when you're at your desk. I'm talking about in the morning (right when you wake up) check the load board. At night, before you go to sleep (you have a computer) check the load board. Always be checking. Dispatch unto others as you would want dispatched unto you. Okay, you get it.
    Thanks for joining me today on Auto Transport Intel. I'm the Car Hauling Dispatcher. My name is Jay. Thank you for your time and I hope my advice helps you. You have a good one out there on the road.

      Thank you! That is an excellent question! It's understandable that a driver and/or owner gets very busy, so adding staff (such as a dispatcher) makes sense as a business grows; but as the business owner, I highly recommend you decide your trucking route and business strategy. That is why you might consider a coaching session with Ty of CTS (CLICK HERE: bit.ly/2CDDzKO). And I hope to see you in the live chat on a Tuesday night!

I see lots of car haulers on I-90 headed to City Auction in West Springfield, Pa. Thanks for the question. Yes, as long as you can carry the heavier and bigger units like high top sprinter vans, F-550s, etc. Make sure you have at least a 10,000 pound winch and a jump box. Specialize in hard to get units. Focus on a territory or several states and make friends at the ports until you get your own TWIC: www.tsatraveltips.us/twic-card/ You might also check out my Auto Transport Business Startup blog post: www.autotransportintel.com/car-hauling-dispatcher/how-to-start-new-auto-transport-business/ Hope that helps you and best of luck.

      At America's Import, they handle the importing for a customer and have them put the business on the Bill of Lading as the Notify party and handle all necessary filings from the ISF Security form to the filing and Entry clearance and pick up from the US port. They either have it ready at Sea Port Services which is off port of Jacksonville for customer pick up so the customer does not need to deal with Customs or the port and or shipped directly to the customers Business or Home. What percentage do you earn from each load you assign to drivers. Does the customer pay you or the driver?

    • @ATIAutoBusiness
      @ATIAutoBusiness  Před 5 lety

      Thanks for the question. Yes, the dispatcher earns a percentage of each load they book that is picked up and delivered by the carrier they are booking for - and this is paid by the carrier (or driver) to the dispatcher. The customer pays the broker or the driver, not the dispatcher. Think 'high single digit percentage'. I also cover this topic in my Dispatcher Training Series: czcams.com/video/c6Q5JYFtYNI/video.html I hope that helps.

    What is a backhaul? Does it cost less to go back ? Who came up with that term?

    • @ATIAutoBusiness
      @ATIAutoBusiness  Před 3 lety +1

      A "backhaul" is a common industry term that means a load for the trailer so that the carrier isn't empty after delivering to a location.

    • @Prachka1
      @Prachka1 Před 3 lety +1

      Auto Transport Intel , in that case - is every load a backhaul? Some people seem to think that one should pay more or less than the other. Seems like a stupid explanation that some people are buying and others are pushing it.

    • @ATIAutoBusiness
      @ATIAutoBusiness  Před 3 lety +1

      Any load coming back from where a carrier delivers could be considered a back haul. The problem is, many carriers (and dispatchers) pick great paying loads that go to locations where there's no good paying loads coming back to where they need to return. That leads to empty spaces on a trailer (sometimes for long distances) which equates to not making money - or losing valuable time waiting for a load to bring back. But if you're going to deliver a great paying load to a remote location and sell your business when you get there, then you're right, no need for a back haul.

      Great Question! If you are a Car Shipping Customer trying to move a car (or cars) then you are looking for an an Auto Transport Broker. If you are a Car Hauling Business Owner looking for someone to help you keep your Car Carrier loaded then you are looking for a Car Hauling Dispatcher. So the question is, are you trying to ship a car or are you a car hauling business?

      I am a new car hauler out of Austin Tx. I've pretty much got everything going except a couple more legalities and I'll be ready to rock and roll. Is there a reputable dispatcher that you would recommend I deal with? Also, on average, what percentage per car does a dispatcher usually charge? Thank you for your time.

    • @ATIAutoBusiness
      @ATIAutoBusiness  Před 6 lety

      I believe I can recommend a dispatcher. Please email me: autotransportintel@gmail.com with your basic contact and company info. The percentage charge can vary so I will let the dispatch service give you their service quote.

    Hi Jay , please , how to spell " INOP" ?

    • @ATIAutoBusiness
      @ATIAutoBusiness  Před 4 lety

      INOP refers to an inoperable vehicle. Most cars are run and drive because they start and run when you turn the ignition key. An inoperable vehicle does not start, and therefore requires a winch or forklift to make it on and off the transport trailer, which is A LOT more work.

    Hello I've been watching your videos trying to get info on shipping. Are you still in the business and do you know anyone in Portland oregon area.
    I am trying to get my car moved 325 miles from Portland 97266
    To idaho 83647. I have been trying for 2 weeks to get it moved
    But all I have got is the run around and games from shippers.
    Wanting me to sign blank contracts and open contracts
    And wanting card info and payment authorization when they dont have a drive lined up or a pick up date. I would never have believed how much of a hassle it is just to move a car 325 miles.
    All I want ìs my car and an honest deal any info or help would be greatly appreciated.
    Im willing to pay for your time if you can help get this done.
    Thank you for your time and video's. Have a nice day. Robert
