    The 2017 Cleveland Indians, err, 2017 Cleveland Guardians? IDK, anyway, they had a 22 game win streak. It wasn't that long ago, but you may have forgotten! The Cleveland 22 game win streak is an MLB record for the most part. The 1916 Giants technically won 26 without losing, but had a tie in the middle of that streak.
    Of course, 22 in a row is better than 20, the modern mark set by the 2002 Oakland Athletics AKA the Moneyball A's. It's a streak that was chronicled in both the bestselling book and 2011 Moneyball movie, starring Brad Pitt as Billy Beane. In this episode of Baseball Bits, a Foolish Baseball production, I'll be making my pitch for a sequel titled Moneyball 2: 2 Money 2 Ball.
    I'll need a Hollywood cast for this movie. Who will play Mike Chernoff? Terry Francona? Jose Ramirez? Francisco Lindor? All will be answered as I deftly form the plot of my Moneyball sequel all while analyzing the MLB record win streak. The hardest part is figuring out how to outdo the Chris Pratt Scott Hatteberg casting.

      Most overlooked player of the 2002 Athletics. Everyone mentions that the A's had three aces, and Lidle wasn't an ace, but he was a good fourth starter. He was worth more than three and a half wins above replacement by either WAR metric. You don't win 100 games if your 4th guy is mediocre. If nothing else, he was certainly more important than anyone featured in the movie or book, but his story wasn't one that you write books or movies about. That doesn't mean he shouldn't at least be recognized as being a key contributor to the team.

    I'm convinced that while this is an impressive feat the reality is that there are so many variables that make up the game that variance plays too large a factor. It's why so many games are played a season compared to other sports. It's why the very best teams of the live ball era have win loss records of somewhere in the low .7 range and why this and the 2002 Oakland run is down to variance swinging wildly in one direction, just like it did this season for the Angels to lose 14 in a row after starting the season with such a high win percentage.

    • @pohorex6834
      @pohorex6834 Před rokem +1

      That’s kind of the point, though cleveland did it pretty definitively, allowing 10 runs in 12 stars for your starters is a great way to win ball games. But it is definitely luck based, but not luck driven. That’s the way I’d describe it

    • @joshuapatrick682
      @joshuapatrick682 Před rokem +1

      @@pohorex6834 I don't consider variance and luck the same thing. Luck is a deck of cards being shuffled and there being a 60 percent chance that order has never existed before in history (true stat). Variance implies a multitude of variables. The barometric pressure, relative humidity, how well the bats have adapted to the new environment after being flown in, were the balls mudded properly, the the pitcher apply too much sticky stuff this at bat, the environmental factors are so multitudinous and mind numbing before you ever get the the players themselves.

    • @pohorex6834
      @pohorex6834 Před rokem

      @@joshuapatrick682 When I consider luck to be a part of the game, I am talking about how your entire team could in theory get 45 hits in a single game and still not score a run. One thing that's kind of hinted at when Beane meets with Shapiro in Cleveland is that they were already doing moneyball type stuff in Cleveland before "moneyball".
    President of baseball ops Antonetti started in '99 as an assistant under AGM Shapiro and Chernoff joined the org in 2003 after working closely with Shapiro in his internship

    Goddamned Nap Lajoie, always racking up the counting stats when it's easy, but all of a sudden a "sore hammy" when there's 22 games to be won. Pshaw

    This video is quite difficult/painfil to watch from about the 5:20 mark forward, for I happen to be a lifelong diehard KC Royals fan--I know, diehard Royals fans are rare and hard to come by nowadays, HOWEVER, I was born in Kansas City, Missouri, nearly 36 years ago, and have lived within 30 miles of KCMO every year since. And it just happens that, being born in the first week of November 1986, it was almost exactly 1 year after the Royals had just won their first World Series in 1985. And for anyone who knows baseball, and in particular, Royals baseball, that 1985 WS victory also marked the last time we would even reach the playoffs for nearly 30 years, when in 2014, we'd surprisingly win the wild card and to make our first playoffs in 29 years, then surprise the world even more by sweeping our way into the World Series without losing a single Playoff game before heartbreakingly losing to the SF Giants in 7 games.
    Of course we'd go on to make our second playoffs in a row the next season, have a slightly bumpier journey to the WS but make it there nonetheless, then go on to smoke 🚬 the NY Mets 4 games to 1, thus exactly 30 years after their previous WS title in 1985, Royals won the 2015 WS and would mark their 2nd franchise WS Banner and also their last WS banner and also the last time seeing the playoffs.
    THANKS to the Indians in 2017, for what it doesn't mention in this video, but we were only 4.5 games back of Cleveland nearing the end of August before we eventually collapsed and, as we see in this video, Cleveland flourished with the longest winning streak in baseball history.
    And since that 2017 season, my Royals haven't even sniffed the playoffs, havent had a .500 season, and have been essentially out of the playoff hunt by May each of those seasons.
