    Paper mache clay, was a complete game changer! It allowed me to be way more creative with my Halloween creations and allowed me a way to sculpt without spending a ton of money on supplies.
    Paper clay ingredients
    1 - 2 rolls toilet paper
    2 - Hot Water
    3 - 2 cups joint compound
    4 - 1.5 cups glue (Tightbond II wood glue)
    5 - 1 Cup flour
    6 - table spoon or so of salt.
    We start off by unrolling the toilet paper into a big bowl. Then completely cover the toilet paper with hot water and let stand for at least 30min. After toilet paper has had time to soak, using a hand mixer shred the toilet paper into tiny little pieces. Then strain and squeeze at least 80% of the water out of the toilet paper. Put toilet paper balls into bowl and break apart (the smaller the better). next had 2 cups joint compound, 1.5 cups tightbood II wood glue, 1 cup of flour, and about a table spoon of salt. Using your hand mixer, mix ingredients until smooth and uniform. You should be able to ball the clay up into one big ball. Keep ball of paper clay in a ziplock bag unit ready to use. If clay is kept in something air tight like a ziplock back it should last up to three weeks without going bad.

    Awesome tutorial...and I am so happy that you gave credit to the Ultimate Paper Mâché lady. She’s awesome too and a lot of people don’t give her any credit as if they came out with her recipe on their own. I appreciate your tutorials and your clear and easy to follow teaching style. I respect you and I admire your work.

    Thank you so much for talking us through what you're doing and explaining every step no matter how simple it is. Too many CZcamsrs film and toss music onto their videos, then speed it all up, without ever speaking. This can make it difficult to understand what is being done and doesn't give any little hints or tips. So thanks for making this really clear and easy to understand and follow.

    Some recommendations - cut the toilet paper roll in half - save time - use a cheap blender rather than mixer - you can mix it wet and dry safely and easily - use a cloth to contain and drain the paper pulp

    I just made a batch, and am so impressed already. The body of the clay seems wonderful. I'm pretty sure this is a great proportion. And no oil? I have tried many different similar paper clay recipes in the past 40 years. (Yes. Remember library books with instructions?) {smiley}. I can't wait to see how this batch sculpts. With a flour composite, I am letting it rest to absorb the gluten. btw. The tool you are using is a mixer. A blender will make your smoothie, or margarita...the upright hopper with blades at the bottom. Thanks for the great vid!

    Hey if you use water base acrylic paint ( any color house paint works well ) instead of the glue...
    1st, you don't need to add salt or flour
    2nd if keeper in a air tight container or zip lock baggy it will last a very long time, I have some I made over 1 year ago and it's still good.
    3rd, it won't mold either at all.
    ( see the flour is what molds )
    4th, you can use any color paint
    And it holds it's color
    Just thought it would help you

    • @UnhingedProductions1
      @UnhingedProductions1  Před rokem +1

      I use wood glue in this because my projects go outside and the wood glue helps with weather protection. I’ve made it with and without flour for the most part left in a ziplock bag it doesn’t mold either way. I have tended it with acrylic paint before but found for most my projects that is just a waste of paint. I have used latex paint in the past and that causes the clay to be rubbery. I totally appreciate the help. I should probably update this video at some point in time.

    l use Walmart cheapest brand Price First toilet paper. 5 cups flour. 3/4 cup homemade liquid cornstarch, 3/4 cup white glue, 1/4 cup febreze and 4 cups water. Once you have mixed these ingredients you can add 3/4 cup drywall compound. Add 9 rolls kleenex that has been soaked in cold or warm water, your choice. l break up the kleenex by stirring with my hands. This type breaks apart nicely without much work but stirring helps avoid clumping. This recipe is approximate for me, consistency depends on how well you sqeeze out the water from the kleenex before you add it to mixture. l use my drill and a mixing wand l buy at Home depot to mix it up.

    Just a suggestion, since you add water to the final paste... maybe not squeezing the TP so hard, leaving it moist, would lessen the amount of time needed to break it up afterwards. Then you wouldn't need as much water at the end either... Just a suggestion. Great video, really cool projects too. You got skills. If too thin, you could add some more flour or powdered joint compound to thicken it up.

    Please put a piece of rubber shelf liner under your bowl to keep the bowl from sliding around and keep your hands away from the beaters. I'm guessing you are using your hand to keep the mixture from flying out of the bowl. It would be a lot safer to use a piece of cardboard or plastic with two holes poked in it to thread your beaters through thus saving you from a broken finger or two, Every time I see you stick your hand in there, I cringe.

      The experts say to use your craft items only for craft, and not food, as well. If it was a coated ceramic bowl, and stainless beaters? I don't see contamination happening if washed well. I WOULD NOT suggest the same with plastics, or porous surfaces that might not wash off, (nor the "fume films" from cooking plastics in an oven (like shrinky dinks and other crafty kitchen shares) that might not completely wash off.) This is my opinion. Use your judgement.

      Thanks, anyway. I Made my very first batch of paper clay using your recipe. Despite having my mixer break down just as I was adding in the last bits of paper, it still cam out OK. I had to knead it by hand like crazy. I also blended in some shredded and emulsified tissue paper. It is my first adventure into paper mache. And so far I am having fun. My first piece looks exactly like a tortilla. And the two pieces I made today are still drying. I rolled out the clay like pie dough and draped it over a form; making it into a fluted bowl. One is square and the other is circular. Thanks for the inspiration!

    ok so if i substitute the tp for the green fiber, like you mentioned in a more recent video..how much do you use?

    My clay looks lumpy when I apply it,what might the problem be?too little mixing?too little glue? I need it for outdoor use,and we have a lot of Summer rain here

    • @UnhingedProductions1
      @UnhingedProductions1  Před 2 lety

      It has a small lumpy texture to it usually. I use a spoon handle and water to smooth it after I apply it. Adding more joint compound may help

    Hi Unhinged.. thanks for the info video....my clay is kinda sticky tacky!! is this how its supposed to be?

    • @UnhingedProductions1
      @UnhingedProductions1  Před 4 lety +1

      It will be at times, you can either use some more tp to dry it out a bit or some flour. Normally I’ll keep a bowl of water on hand and keep my hands a bit wet and just work with it

  • @EricAlder
    @EricAlder Před 2 lety

    If you find a non-edible replacement for the flour, would mold no longer be a concern?

    • @UnhingedProductions1
      @UnhingedProductions1  Před 2 lety

      You could still have mold issues just due to the joint compound. You just have to make sure it dries completely and you don’t store your projects in a damp dark place

    Very cool tutorial. I do have a question though. Is using two rolls of toilet paper make enough clay to do a fairly sizable project? Can you add more toilet paper or should you just make another batch all together with the same measurements?

    • @UnhingedProductions1
      @UnhingedProductions1  Před rokem +1

      Anytime I need bigger batches, I either double or triple the recipe. You have to increase all the ingredients.

      @@UnhingedProductions1 That is what I was thinking as well. Thanks for your help. I am ready to give this a try. I make stuff with sculptcrete and cement but sculptcrete is so expensive. Cement is so caustic and really want a better option.

    when you have the blender/mixer why do you have your free hand close to the mixers? I couldn't tell what was going on.And why does it have to be hot water...and what if I left it in the water longer than 10 minutes...is there a point where it will become too broken down? Also, I don't have a mixer...what if I used a potato masher? but I may go to goodwill or salvation army and see if they have a cheap used blender or hand mixer. Sorry, I so excited about doing some projects with paper clay that I'm full of questions. I live in a studio apt.. which means I don't have a garage or regular place to make this stuff and this has been the only video on this that I seen so far that doesn't need to go outside because it's so messy. Thank you so much for this video. And you explained it very well.

    • @UnhingedProductions1
      @UnhingedProductions1  Před 7 lety +1

      I keep my had close at times to keep the clay from crawling up onto the mixer. I use Hot water because it breaks down the fibers faster. You can let the TP soak for more than 10 min, I try to say let it soak for at least 10 min. You would have to let the tp soak for days before it ever reached a point that you couldn't use it. If you don't have a mixer the potato masher would work, also just using your hands will work as well. The mixer just gets the job done faster. I hope this helps..

    Hello. I've noticed that you haven't posted in a few months but hoping you can answer this...
    Would using one of those hand blenders help the toilet paper shredding along a bit or would that be overkill ?
    I'm finally going to try this. Thanks for the tutorial. :)

    Love the finished product, how much does this make, how thick do I use? 1/4'', 1/2''?
    BTW- That's called a hand mixer not blender, I almost turned you off cause I'm not putting joint compound in my blender.Lol

    • @UnhingedProductions1

      It does shrink, so keep that in mind. I usually exaggerate features so when it shrinks it’s actually at the size I want
