Rossini: Le Comte Ory - Glyndebourne Festival Opera

- Rossini's opera is set in a medieval French court at a time when all the menfolk have gone off to join the crusades, leaving the women longing for them. In their absence, the licentious Comte Ory, his page and their followers dress up as nuns to get into the castle and raid both the women and the wine cellars. Rossini's witty comedy of lust and sexual disguise is also a hugely-crafted work, containing several masterly set pieces.
This colourful production for Glyndebourne is directed by Jérôme Savary, the actor and comedian, and artistic director of Le Théâtre Nationale de Chaillot in Paris. Andrew Davis conducts his second Rossini opera at Glyndebourne, following the success of Ermione in 1995.

Enfin un opéra "français" du plus français des italiens, chanté par des chanteurs français. Et pas des moindres. Merci mille fois. Ca nous change des Pécheurs de perles, Carmen et Contes d'Hoffmann incompréhensibles
Oui enfin quand on compare ça avec la diction des chanteurs français des années 50 ou 60, où l'on pouvait dactylographier le livret au mot près, on pleure quand même... Évidemment tout est relatif, en effet.
Vous avez raison à cent pour cent. Je dis toujours que les opéras français devraient être chantés par des Français de naissance, tout comme les opéras italiens devraient être chantés par des Italiens. Certains interprètes font des exceptions comme, par exemple, l'incomparable Alfredo Kraus.

So glad you do. It's been one of my favorites since I was a kid. For subtitles, try the Met Opera version. I think there is one on CZcams with titles. The Met's is a very amusing take on the opera and very well sung snd if the CZcams version does not have subtitles you can watch it in HD on the Met website for free if you sign up for their free trial. Otherwise, find a libretto online or maybe at your local library. But you might not need more than a good synopsis to enjoy it.
TedinNY at the MET sung Juan Diego Flórez the Role Conte and he was Amazing, there is a DVD on market, enjoy it
The MET version pales in comparison to this one.

Great aria (developing into a trio) from Marc Laho (as the "nun" with the five o'clock shadow and bushy eyebrows) starting at 2:00:25. All three voices are rich, lyrical and well-controlled.
Check out the one done by Denis Podalydès, it’s a thousand times better ! It’s on CZcams as well.

Beautiful opera, amazing artists, but I wold have liked to have subtitles. I speak French but in opera I hardly understand what they say. I have better chance with Italian, though I speak French better than Italian. Understanding is different.
Sung French is different than spoken French. Do you have the same issue with Chanson and native speakers?

Heavy! Either the orchestra itself is heavy, or the conductor conducted heavily. Sounds like Verdi most of the time. Once an Italian maestro told me, that Rossini in style and “ sound” is closer to Mozart than to the romantics.

Актерская игра певцов более сдержанная, костюмы и декорации более соответствуют эпохе, чем постановка этой оперы в Метрополитен опера 2011года. У американцев все рассчитано на непритязательный вкус слушателя. Здесь чувствуется более высокая культура исполнения, но в Мет лучше голоса у певцов.... ( Диана Дамрау, Джойс Дидонато, Хуан Диего Флорес).
Рекомендую послушать эту оперу в постановке Опера Комик, на канале Mezzo. И голоса хороши, и актёрская составляющая. Получила огромное удовольствие.
