As someone who lives a “poorer” neighborhood who trick or treated in a wealthier neighborhood, we went to avoid any violence not for the candy. Most of the candy was actually worse in this neighborhoods. So her asking for them to change the candy is way to big of an ask if she is going for the candy then she should go to a harvest fest they have candy galore. And it’s only 5 dollars to get in along with parking :)

Yeah when I was a kid growing up in Philly we covered our own working class neighborhood first. Then walked about 1/2 mile to a wealthier area which had many fewer kids living in it, I think. We were just trying to maximize our can hauls. We weren't concerned about crime unless you count watching out for teenagers who might try to snatch your candy. 🤬 One of the reasons we went as a small group (6 -8 kids). Even when we got stuff we didn't love, we just traded with other kids. I can't imagine my parents griping about the quality, quantity or variety of FREE candy folks were offering. 🤣

We lived in the middle-class neighborhoods for my entire life and the truck-or-treating nights seemed like they summoned several dozen more children than who actually live there. Didn’t have a problem tbh I got to see more costumes and friends. I honestly welcome them bc I knew that all the neighborhoods nearby were not as well off as our area. Safety and security over free stuff tbh

I refused since she waited so long and I knew this was all a ploy from the start to get money. She got even more angry and pulled out her tablet to record saying she is live and how I am treating her this way because I am racist (She is black and I am white). I explained the reason why I will not be giving her a refund and if she continue to cause a scene, then she will have to leave. She refused to leave until I gave her money AND a free hot meal for her trouble so I called the cops. She left before they arrived, but not before making a mess: throwing the trash cans arounds, going into the bathrooms to throw any toilet paper and paper towels she could get a hold of, and throwing our food trays out into the parking lot and told me to go fetch them like the dog I am. That was just one of many stories from working there and why I am glad I am not anymore.

So yeah, we went to town, but I can't even imagine the gall to tell ppl in their neighborhood where to park, and what to give.

When I was in my teens I was often in the Santa Claus parade in the city where I grew up. They had people in the parade who would run along side and toss/hand out candy canes along the way. But, that is the only candy I have ever seen handed out in a parade and it was just the little candy canes - the ones that come '100 in a bag' rather than '8 in a box'.
p.s. another comment says that ice cubes might be candies? I googled it and it looks like ice cubes there are what we call icy squares where I live - amazingly good chocolates that I am disgusted someone would have the gall to complain about (OK, I'm disgusted with this choosing beggar anyway but seriously, icy squares are really good chocolates).

There's a reason physical artworks are far more expensive than digital pieces of the same size. You have to factor in the cost of materials and sometimes the shipping costs. And materials are not cheap. Last I checked, 2017ish, the medium grade acrylics were nearly 10 bucks each. At least I think the ones in the tubes were medium grade since they were less than the ones in the much smaller tubes.

The ice cubes thing is pretty standard where I grew up in Kansas. If it's really hot (temperatures regularly rise above 90-100F) then people will hand out ice. Heat stroke is super easy to develop, so I do like that people do it.

  • @queenofputrescence5167

Ok for both candy stories. Go to the small towns! The smaller the town, the bigger the candy. Especially in my area, the towns of 500 people or less throw the best stuff at parades. Bags of chips, freeze pops straight from the cooler, big pieces of candy, candy bars etc.
Same with Halloween. You want to go where people don't have as many kids coming to their door. We give out full size candy bars because we live in an area without many houses. Maybe 20 kids total come to our house.
I once had a discussion with my doctor who said when they lived in a more rural area, they would give out full size candy bars because less than 30 kids came to their house. But then he moved to a house on a golf course. Fortunately one of his neighbors warned him that parents from out in the country drive their kids in to the "rich neighborhood". That meant each kid only received one fun size candy bar at each house because there were like 400-500 kids coming to each house. If those parents had stuck to the outlying neighborhoods, the kids would have collected twice as much candy going to half as many houses.

One house that stood out to me all these years later, was someone who was obviously, joyously wasted and laughing, talking to someone over their shoulder inside as they tossed candy into our sacks. It was kind of like a "what did we just witness?" sort of moment. I think there was a moment just like that in an episode of Bob's Burgers, but I witnessed it in real life
But I think my favorite part about going to the rich neighborhood, was all the unique costumes other kids wore were.

With you questioning why somebody would drive elsewhere for Halloween, it is probably about going to a richer neighborhood. However, when you live in the country and only have two neighbors on your entire street, you have to drive elsewhere if you want candy.
Though, I now live in a city, in a neighborhood with lots of kids. I spent too much money on candy just to not get a single Trick-or-Treater. It was disappointing, as I was excited to finally live somewhere I could hand out candy (most of my adult life has been spent in apartment buildings, whereas now I rent a room in an actual house). At least I bought a bunch of candy I liked, and my coworkers were happy to eat the few I didn't like.

There is a HUGE difference between making a custom piece to ship out & giving away an original. Asking an artist for an original, especially one they had not intended to sell, for anything less than $80 is mad disrespectful.

So that street wasn't exactly safe for kid to trick or treat. Big Candy bars & Halloween: When I was a kid (i'm in my mid 40's now) my family was middle class, and as is mostly true now, it's the upper lower class neighborhoods that give out the most candy (I think it's mostly because houses are much closer together and duplexes of some sort). We'd usually go to those neighborhoods because of it. For us it was OK because my family was well known in those areas (my parents were from the lower to upper lower class societies). As for those "Big Candy bars"... In those days when a kid got a full size candy bar and not one of those "fun size" ones is because the house keeps the full size bars for friends of the family and relatives, and any other child gets 1-2 pieces of the fun size ones or some other cheap generic candy. (another thing friends and relatives are known to do is have baggies with home baked goods like cookies, or baggies with several pieces of the smaller candy, usually labeled as there has been scares of poisoned Halloween candy, which turned out to be just special brownies made for/by teens to get high and kids sometimes get a hold of or handed out to accidentally.) My parents also followed us around in the car, and because the haul back in those days were so massive, we each had 2 pillowcases to hold it all. one would be mostly empty so it wasn't heavy going to the houses, the other was kept in the car. There were years that after a few hours of trick or treating we'd each have a full pillowcase. When I was long out of the phase, in the upper-middle class neighborhood i lived in, the straw that broke the camels back is a few years where teens would throw stink bombs into all the houses, and that killed the festivities for everyone as the entire neighborhood would soon go dark (lights turned off) and mostly stopped participated altogether.

So for the Halloween story, you've actually got it backward with the candy OP. The richer the neighborhood, the shittier the candy they hand out. Those with the most means always give the least in 90% of neighborhoods. I've not once seen a beater appear in a richer neighborhood for candy, but EVERY YEAR I see expensive cars, often Mercedes, park on the corner of my street and let out 4-8 kids and go door to door for candy, then all dive back in and rocket off down the road to go to the next street over. They've even damn near hit kids when they were leaving. When I was a kid, rich neighborhoods gave out expensive candy, but it hasn't been that way, at least not in my city, in almost 20 years.

So, even tho it’s very bad, the neighbor bought a pack of bigger choco bars, took the wrapper off as delicately as possible, then made some granola bars with lots of protein and raisins. She made them as thin as she could, wrapped them up and made them look like how it was packaged. Then when the harpy and kids came around(she knew who it was that emailed her cause of her attitude before) kindly gave them the fake choco bars. The harpy was smug seeing what candy she had and left while giving her a sly comment. She got an email later telling her how awful she was to do that to her babies.
