I will be 60 in a few months Chris so I am a few good years ahead of you. Just embrace your age and adjust your goals if needed, I say. I still generally run 5 days a week. I try to do one core/strength session a week, but does not always happen. I have decided to focus on trying to maintain any fitness/speed I have into my next decade, and if I see any improvements that will be the icing on the cake.

I think what runners need to consider is their particular background in running. Everyone is different and adapting training as you get older is important. For me though, I did not start running until I was 45 and had not been an active person before that. I am 50 next year and I am still on an upward trajectory with volume and pace and have not reached a peak yet. I am still building an aerobic base that long time runners might have already built over many years. I currently run 6 days a week with normal mileage about 40 miles which increases when I do a marathon training block. To recover I make sure my easy days are easy (Zone 1) so that my body can recover but I am still building aerobically.

I turned 50 this year. I have an autoimmune condition and I have to limit my running in the cold. I have joined a gym to run on the treadmill and trying some weights! I will try your tips, thank you.

It's the first time we've seen this so thanks for posting. However, we don't agree with everything you say as we're both in our 50s and manage to run pretty much every day. Yes, we do more maintenance work now and less running than 10 years ago where 80 miles was a decent week, now it's 50... If you're an experienced runner you learn to know what's the right amount for you. Athlete profiling is important before making decisions about how much running should be done. #keeponkeepingon

Pilates, Chi running and Trail running. Cut down the roads and keep the speed work to just a 5 k or two each week. Run long marathons ultras and enjoy the scenery, drink and eat properly to fuel - enjoy đŸ˜‚đŸƒđŸ»â€â™€ïž
