  • BlueDevil radiator flush is great, but I think distilled water is better! Here's a guide on how to flush a radiator or cooling system using nothing but 100% distilled water on my Hummer H3.

    Everytime I have a problem with my hummer I come to your videos lol😂 question 🙋🏻‍♂️ how many quarts does the cooling system take? I always seem to second guess everything and I’d rather ask someone who knows lol

      Hey Oscar! Happy to know you keep finding yourself watching my videos. To answer your question and provide some additional helpful info, check out the "Maintenance & Lubrication" manual on my website: h3humper.wordpress.com/hummer-h3-repair-manual/ In the manual, it shows the approximate amount of coolant you can plan for (first thing listed in the Maintenance & Lubrication manual). Usually there is a bit trapped in the system, so I usually end up with a little coolant leftover. If you have trouble finding it, let me know!

    The torrent of coolant! HA - been there done that! Glad you didn't edit that out. I used a larger oil pan to catch most of the coolant, still not a good way to evacuate the radiator, from stock.
    I added Universal Water Temp Joint Sensor, Radiator Hose Adapter (1-1/2") on the lower hose. Used the 1/8NPT threaded hole to install a petcock valve.

      What a great idea with adding the petcock! The torrent of coolant from the factory setup is not the way haha. I used one of those hose adapters for the thermoswitch on my e-fan swap.

    Other than my old 06 Mercury Grand Marquis. The hummer has to be the second easiest to fix yourself. I will say I've done this once and this last time i said F it. I paid pep boys to do it 😆. Every other vehicle has a drain plug. Hummer wants to be difficult. Lol i had to go buy cat litter because I had coolant everywhere 😆. I did same ish you did! Still got coolant everywhere LOL. I was pissed. Its time consuming but easy none the less LOL. Now I have to replace heater hose. I may do it myself i was losing coolant and could never find where. Until one day it got worst. It was the clip on from heater hose. So we cut clip on and use one of those metal ties to clamp it on until I can get new hoses. Apparently that's a normal issue. I've examined your on the video. I was suggest you go ahead and replace yours. Mine look same way and giving me hell. Lol. You don't see leaks on grown but you know it's leaking. Lol

      I sure do wish we had drain plugs..! It is terribly difficult to drain these things without a coolant explosion haha. Thank you for your info on the coolant leak! I have been loosing a small amount and couldn't tell where, for sure. I see some coming from the plastic neck at the top of the radiator, as well. I'll certainly check out my heater hose when I have time! Let me know how your repair goes. :D

      @@H3Humper I ordered a new radiator Original Equipment. And I went through plenty of caps. Only one has worked and stopped leak. That was ACdelco cap. So from my experience once it's on. Don't take it on or off unless you have to. If you do. Make sure it's cooled down like over night cooled. It is hard plastic the radiator that is. I started to purchase the metal one but I didn't. Three years in counting. Everything as been fine. I also cut hose from coolant over flow tank to radiator. Over time the ends get weak. Its long enough to cut and reuse. Fyi it's the small hose from overflow tank to side of radiator. Once I get the new heater hose and fixed I'll let You know.

    I did a coolant flush and added GM spec coolant. However, my thermostat keeps going right above 1/2 mark. Why? My radiator looks okay from visual inspection and was replaced a few years ago although it may not be the best brand.

      Hey there 😎 Does the temperature gauge fluctuate a lot in short periods of time (a few seconds, for example)? If youe gauge is consistently a little over 1/2 for engine coolant temp, I would say it is "normal" for our H3's. Mine ran at just below 3/4 for the longest time until my temp sensor began "failing,"I at which point it read at 1/4 temp finally! I left it because it worked properly otherwise. I hear most people's H3's operate between 1/2 and 3/4, which seems high, but it is due to the gauge design from the manufacturer. If still concerned, I recommend using a scantool to read your coolant temp. I think normal operating range is listed in the manual (I imagine between 180°F-205°F). Mine would get up to 220° if I was really climbing some mountains with it but it would normally stay at 195°F, which is what my DIY e-fan setup was designed for.

    I never once saw you use the blue devil flush. Did I miss something?

      Hey Cory, I did not use the Blue Devil flush; just distilled water 😎 My point was to show how using nothing but distilled water results in a complete flush (going from very dirty to super clean with no additional additives), hence "a free and clean alternative to the Blue Devil flush." I didn't explain this in the video, which would have been helpful.

    • @corymauch779

      Well you had to buy the distilled water. And a lot of it right?

    • @H3Humper
      @H3Humper  Před rokem +2

      @@corymauch779 people often use hose water but I decided to use distilled to be safe. The radiator flush chemicals do not eliminate everything with one flush of the system, so additional flushes are necessary anyway.
