Anything from ELO in the past always sounded like it was from the future. Even when you listen to the songs from the past now today, they still sound like they are from the future :)
Great observation. ELO was a band before itâs time.
Twenty First Century Man!
That is not a spaceship that ELO use, it is a time machine!
My dad was a huge ELO fan and took me to see them in 1981 for the Time tour. RIP dad.
ELO is one of those bands where it's so hard to pick a favorite song because everything they do is so good.
I'm 60 years old and have loved this song and ELO since I was a kid!! I think I was 13 when this came out.
Me too. Since I was a kid. Iâm 55 but I remember them as I was really young
55 hereâŠmy parents were super cool, and had all their albums! Thank you, mom and dad!
61 here, i even liked elo during my punk phase đ
đ I was in the 7th grade, discovering FM
my dad had A New World Record on 8-track in the car when i was a kid & i must've listened to it a million times. put me in the camp of ELO fan since i was a kid (52 now)
Ahhh ELO a must have group in any serious music collection... soo many great songs Jeff Lynne is a musical genius.
Jeff Lynn is so Talented, He Wrote,He Sang, He was Lead and Rhythm Guitarist Plus when He played with a band, It was a BAND! Cello,Violin,Flutes,Trumpets,Xylophone,Piano,Tuba,Clarinet. AMAZING!
"Strange Magic" is just hands down a beautiful, magical song. Its my personal favorite by ELO.
Reminder: you saw the lead singer, Jeff Lynn in the Traveling Wilburys supergroup along with George Harrison (The Beatles), Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison.
Ahh. ELO. Never a bad song by this band. Such great memories. đ
"Can't Get it Out of My Head" is another song from E.L.O. that evokes some kind of feeling.
I could never get enough of this band. It's got so many avenues to traverse.
When this album came out I had the album and an 8-Track in my car of this a couple other ELO albums...I was 16 at the time...those were the days for awesome rock, I'm 63, and I never tire of "our" music...Rock ON!!
As a kid I'd sneak into my older sister's room and chill to her ELO albums - good stuff.
I did the same
Same here.
@@jjcsherman6059 What were you doing in his sister's room? lol sorry had to say it
Sweet memory âïž
All of my teen years were in the 1970s. So I grew up listening to all of the great classic rock bands. But, ELO was one that just stood out well above the rest.
ELO are musical magicians.
Brad & Lex, youâll love their "Do Yaâ& âLivinâ Thingâ!!!!
Do Ya, was always my favorite song by ELO. đ
One of my favourite songs of all time I adore this song and ELO jeff Lynne is incredible
So funny you said carnival. My memory of hearing this song for the first time at 9 years old on the yo-yo ride at the state fair in Missouri when I was staying with my best friends grandparents farm in Missouri. Clear as day in my mind and Iâm 57 years old today! Thatâs what music is..magical and a time stamp!
This ELO reaction just maybe made me realize that in today's day and age, musicians seem to be incapable of making a ballad or playing their instruments that reflect and/or match the lyrics that they are singing. I think that's why bands like ELO and Fleetwood Mac resonate so much with the soul. They do this with so much presition and perfection. : )
It's also the serious lack of melody in modern music.
Interesting observation.
This is exactly why I always like Lindsey Buckingham's guitar work over EVH, as sacrilege as that is... Yeah EVH had more talent and was way more technical, but you FELT Lindsey's guitar. Whatever the song was about, was echoed with is guitar work. EVH was just speed and a lot of notes flying at you, with no real emotion other than pure energy. Sometimes that worked, sometimes it left me feeling cold.
You have no real knowledge. Of what today's music usy all about. You talk from total ignorance. I follow Rock bands right now there are many really good ones a few great ones. The usual music is always better in the past crap comment
@@nealm6764 Yes , also it seems today that it's all about the glorification of the ego self in the so called performer and /or Artist. There was a time when we knew the whole band and each band was so different from one another it was like different colors. Today they're all the same. No bands ! Today these award shows unfortunately are just disgusting filth and it's sad. âïž : )
Not knowing how to "make music" without samples and a computer these days.
I've loved this since I was about 7 or 8 years old....ELO has always been a favorite band of mine. Jeff Lynne did some great things with movie soundtracks too, "Electric Dreams" and "Xanadu".
A less well-known Jeff Lynne movie song is called "Wild Times". it's a folk-song and is sung in the movie Robin Hood Prince of Thieves when they are partying around the camp fire.
Yeah I'm your age. My Mom listened to soft rock when I'd ride around with her in the car. Wasn't the biggest fan by then because I had graduated to AM Rock by then (FM Album Rock would soon follow) but now I sort of have a soft spot for the stuff.
Soooo much Beatles influence in this band. I never realized it back then. Just loved the songs.
Yeah, that's cool and crazy, isn't it? Guess we had to be far away in time to hear objectively who caught onto which thread of music... kinda like hearing Xanadu recently, and the vocal line SCREAMED Electric Light Orchestra... but at the time, I had no inkling Lynne was so involved in it.
Thomas Shaw - are you Tommy Shaw from Styx? Hahaha joking.
I just commented on their Beatles influence and connection. One of my best friends, a famous drummer, used to say they were the poor man's version of the Beatles. That was 30 years ago and it is so true. I've always been a fan of both bands so ....
But ELO was on Apple records and there is so much undeniable similarities in writing, vocals, production, everything.
Jeff Lynne set out to create music that sounded like a continuation of the Beatles right after Magical Mystery Tour. Thatâs why all the strings. Also, Lennon loved the song âShowdownâ and called ELO âson of Beatle.â
Great memories from that era, wish I cld go bk to the 70's, great decade to be an adult.
The "ELO" earworm that I always have is "Telephone Line" , ( I know you heard that one ) they had some massive Albums in the 70s e.g. "Discovery" "Out of The Blue" and "A New World Record" . for a few short years in my childhood , they were HUGE . You keep playing these hits from when I was a kid and , I gotta tell ya the nostalgia is pretty overwhelming .
Also , Lex is wearing that T-shirt again and I still don't know what it says.
Telephone Line my favorite.
Showdown next. Then all of them.
Such a great song!
I think it says I work so my dog can have a better life.
We're 60, and saw them live in Toronto a few years ago. It was one great hit after another and we sang and danced the night away. Damn we were lucky to grow up during those times.đđ€ đšđŠ
Ah the genius of Jeff Lynne and the Electric Light Orchestra (E.L.O.) my lifelong favourites of some 45+ years and counting. So, so many gems, with so many layers to be found in the bottomless E.L.O. treasure chest. "Strange Magic" is so beautifully crafted and always has a magical effect on me đ. Thank you for reacting to this wonderful band. Paul đđđ
There are so many great songs that have been used for commercials lately
You got to do "Mr Blue Sky" Lex will be bouncing off the walls. Would love to see her reaction.
ELO one of the most creative bands EVER
can you imagine listening to this as a 12 year old? i was blown away! the incredible ones!
Jeff Lynne and ELO was such a dynamic and unique force in the 70âs. It was like hearing Queen for the first time. Two dynamic bands coming forward in the Star Wars age! Quite a unique time to be alive!
17. Spring, 1976. My first love. Unbelievable feeling. All was right with the world đ. This song, a hit on the radio. Never will forget. I was never the same again.â€
You're walking meadows in my mind
Making waves across my time
You guys should react to more Electric Light OrchestraâŠ
"Livin' Thing", "Can't Get It Out of My Head", "Showdown", "Turn to Stone", "Rockaria", "Sweet Talkin' Woman", "Last Train to London", "Tightrope", "I'm Alive", "The Fall"
đžđ€
I think âCanât Get It Out of My Headâ is my favorite ELO song, but they are all SO great.
Brings me back to the late 70's, early 80's, when I would borrow records from friends, and make my own tape, with the best songs in the albums!
I loved this song so much as a kid , when it came on radio I would stop and listen to it, Love the way it sounds , thier harmony , so soft and magical . Great song this is why I love ELO one of my favorite bands, takes me right back to being that dreamy girl , its infatuation of someone as seen as you seen them , it gives you that magic feeling .,
Yes, ma'am - it's the harmonies.
The band name sounds like what one hears when listening to their songs.
True but less of a âbandâ and mostly Jeff Lynne.
@@spartanswerve7575 Yes I love his voice
One of my faves by ELO!!!!
Love this song. One of their simpler songs but sounds amazing.
So many masterpieces by ELO
ELO has some good songs, havenât heard this in so many years, thank you for sharing!
Hi!!!! đ
This is a jewel by ELO; a really nice soft and relaxing song, but also full of surprises as the violins and the choruses at the end. really beaytiful.
Another hiden gem by ELO are Shangri-La and Can't get it out of my head. But please react to my favorites All Over the World and Last Train to London.
Best regards from Chile!! đ
Shangri-La is a belter...and Midnight Blue, Steppin' Out...and many other of the less well-known album tracks.
If you like ELO ... one of their best tunes is Can't Get It Outta My Head ... classic ELO sound and feel ... Beautiful
Pure genius, as ELO frontman, solo act or with Traveling Wilburys
ELO still amazes me decades later.
What an incredible band! They had their own style duplicated by no one since; yet while not duplicated, they had a huge influence on music and on other groups.
Lexâs intuition is impeccable!
One of ELOâs realy adventures you can hear in the song âTightropeâ. Itâs a journey out in space and back. Your fantacy will take you there. Try it.
Love her smile and she gets it đ
My favorite ELO track. Doesn't seem as dramatic as some of their material, but what a pretty ballad with a great chorus. Also some pretty guitar work early on with some vividly romantic and visual lyrics as well. Very smooth just seems to effortlessly glide along.
wow! Pure Genius! My parents Looooved ELO and now so do I and my friends!
Hahaha! Great reaction. Love ELO.
So many good songs by ELO, my favorite is "Turn to Stone." Instant happiness.
So many masterpieces. Turn to stone is one of my faves, evil woman đ, telephone line, donât bring me down, Mr blue sky âŠ
Wonderfully creative , British band..

ELO brings back my roller đŒ skate days.... This song refers to that "spark" between two "singles" ...that flourishes.
A twinge of sorrow too in this one.
Brad and lex their is a new sensational singer today her name is Allie Sherlock she is 17 years old and she sings like she's been singing for 40 years. Just go to any CZcams and type in Ali Sherlock and you will start seeing her songs that she sings she sings out on the street with a band or without a band sometimes she plays guitar for herself and for other people she sings all kinds of music new music old music and she even writes her own music you guys need to hear her Allie Sherlock on CZcams she is beyond most singers. She has quite a sensational spin on the sound the way she sings she mesmerizes her audience they just stand there and stare at her like they are locked in a trance. Even little kids stand there and not move and listen to her. Please listen to her and then critique her on your show please thank you very much.
I am truly jealous. ........ I so wish that I could hear this song for the first time, like these two.
You two are great together and your reactions are entertaining
Jeff Lynne and ELO as Righteous Brothers and CCR NEVER DISAPPOINT! Sweet Talkin Woman is my favorite of theirs
I love ELO. They have many awesome songs you need to check out. Telephone Line is one of my faves
@@deepsix1827 yes!and their sound is so unique
Yes that was another good song I remember when I was a kid going roller skating it would always be a couple skate.đ€
@@frankrizzo4460 yes! Youâre right. It was. Rizzo is my favorite baseball player lol đ
Don't know what it's about but such an iconic song. Loved this song even though a was a 70s headbanger. Love ELO.
"There's Gonna Be A Showdown", hidden gem
It's a mystical, fairyland song.đâ€đ€
I remember so much the Paul MaCartney song "One more lonely nights"
I had the album this song is from back in 1975, I think... and I have never, ever thought of a "stiff as a board" statement...we were much more innocent back then.
Que agradable es oĂr a ELO.
Greeting and friendship. Many likes for You
Just love it when you react to this awesome band, long may you react to them.
Unique is a word you don't hear much in music these days, ELO (aka Jeff Lynne) did and still do fit into that category.
ELO is the music of my school days, this has such a relaxing vibe, â10538 Overtureâ is their first single and definitely has a Beatles feel about it, itâs worth a listen.
I am also 60 years old and I still listen to it everyday!! Love love it!!
Me too
IM 61 know what ya mean
Love that you guys are getting into my Genre of music ELO , The Wings, SuperTramp, Zepplin you guys are reviewing some great musicians!!! Keep it up it will improve viewership.
Next from ELO, please react to their 1976 classic, *"Tightrope".* It is quintessential ELO, and I'm certain you'll both love it! Fascinating lyrics for Brad, and strings galore for Lex! :D
Oh yes, "Tightrope" is a must đđ
ELO did what the brits would call taking a piss. They threw out everything conventional and just had a laugh with effects noone had ever heard before. It's like Beach Boys arrangement meeting Pink Floyd's futuristic sound. It's so weird. And so special. And so precious.
You are really delving into the music of my young days. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company and now ELO. ELO were very first international band that I saw as a young bloke, going from the bush to Sydney to see them with my mates (and no parents). A wild weekend with a brilliant concert in the middle of it and back to high school on the Monday. A suggestion would be to listen to ELO tracks like Ma Ma Belle (Rock), Cant Get It Out Of My Head (haunting, like this one) or Boy Blue (Orchestral / Rock) when they were a big band. After those tracks they dropped the albums New World Record, Out of the Blue and Discovery and went INTERSTELLAR!
ANY Day is a good day for ELO. Thanks.
Jeff Lyne was able to channel The Beatles. This tune opens with some George Guitar, John verses, Paul chorus and simple Ringo drumming.... and even George Martin strings!
Jeff Lynne was a close friend of George Harrison of the Beatles (who would later join him to form The Traveling Wilburys in the 80s).... Lynne was very influenced by the Beatles use of strings in their songs, especially Eleanor Rigby and I Am The Walrus. After the breakup of the Beatles, Lynne set out to form a band that would continue what the Beatles started, mixing orchestral arrangements with rock. The band started out as The Move, later changing to Electric Light Orchestra ("light" meaning undersized, not light as in light bulb). Once they caught on in the early 70s, they were informally referred to as the "Beatles of the '70s", with many suggesting ELO was what the Beatles would have sounded like in the 70s had they not broken up after the Let It Be album in 1970.
Per Songfacts Written by ELO frontman Jeff Lynne, "Strange Magic" is the sixth track on Electric Light Orchestra's fifth studio album Face the Music.
By this time, the band had shifted their orchestral sound to make it brighter and more radio-friendly. The strategy paid off, as this song and "Evil Woman" were both big hits.
The song is about a captivating woman, but "Strange Magic" is also a good description for this song's sonics. Compressed to a tight 3:27 for the single release (it runs 4:29 on the album), the song packs in an intriguing array of harmonies and hooks while integrating the famous ELO string section. The lyric is suitably trippy, and very repetitious, with the title appearing five times per chorus.
I will always believe that when ELO formed they decided that I case there was extra terrestrial life ,they would write and perform music for them.Earthlings just happen to love it to.
Thank you Brad and Lex for the wonderful song you played.
Great love song
Love elo and their futuristic sound
One of the best songs made.
This song was used in a
animated movie with the same name. A George Lucas film that bombed in theaters, but my granddaught loved it.
ELO at the time was seen as an extension of the Beatles Srg Peppers album.
Do you remember meeting a person and you feel connected? You feel like you have known this person for all your life. The person that no matter how bad of an idea they ask of you. You just can't say no. They hold you with "strange magic ".
It sounds mystical!
I love ELO. Mr. Blue Sky, Xanadu soundtrack.... etc
Brad... You may have nailed the subject matter! I never made that connection with the title. When a young man is so affected by a woman, it's magical and yet strange. Cool reaction!
this wouldâve been perfect in a Dr Strange sequel.
Love ELO. Tubular. đ€đŒđ„â€ïž
Another great song by an even greater group!
Seen them in concert when I was a kid , my dad took me
Oh Brad!!! Shaking my head ...đ
Gotta see them at Wembley fucking awesome.
Excellent Brad, nailed it !!!
First song I got stoned to. Was in a tree fort smoking weed when this came on. Was about 13 and the year was 1976 when this was a hit.
I guess Jeff Lynne has a song in his huge catalog that is just perfect for you then: _Sitting In My Tree_ - the b-side to Jeff's first single with the Idle Race, from 1967. In quirkiness it is maybe best compared to Syd Barrett's wonderful contributions to Pink Floyd's debut album of the same year. I'd love to hear what you think of it; post a comment here when you have given it a listen!
@@lhpl I listened to the compilation âBack to the Storyâ by Idle Race featuring â Sitting in my Tree â and noticed the following: Many Beatlesqe type songs but many other influences such as the Monkees, Pink Floyd and even the Hollies. Never knew that Jeff Lynne was in this band.Truthfully I really wasnât that impressed with the music. But hey you have to start somewhere.
@@alaingaudart3432 Interesting! I think I found them a bit weird and rough on the first listen, however that changed after a few listens. The reason I suggested the song was of course that you mentioned sitting stoned in a tree-house. :-)
Note that the BTS compilation also includes songs by the Nightriders pre-Lynne, as well as post-Lynne songs. I now like Jeff's Idle Race (and Move) songs just as much as any ELO song, with _The Lady Who Said She Could Fly_ possibly being the one I love most, even though I usually say I don't have favorite songs.
Maestro Fresh Wes - Let Your Backbone Slide
Trange Magicf = that feeling when you first fall in love.
this song was in the movie "Ella enchanted"
Lots of great stuff from ELO.
The version you listened to is missing the instrumental intro.
My favorite ELO song.
Have a great day!
