Back in the day when music was creative. Jeff Lynne is a genius.
Back in the day Tesla was the âĄElectric Light Orchestra.âĄ
Definitely
There's still a lot of creative music being created today. You just won't find most of it on the Billboard 100 or on the radio.
@@ajschroetlin2196 - Definitely right! The past doesn't have the monopoly on creativity.
@@wesfroman4902 check KEXP live sessions. There's some really good stuff there.
This was in the days before answering machines, and definitely before voice-mail. You could let the phone ring forever. It's a haunting song. My personal ELO favorite. I always loved the sound effects. Jeff Lynne is a Beatles disciple. It's just one fine example of the ripples finding a new and extraordinary voice.
There is so much Beatles influence in this song its brilliant.. Also my personal fav..
Don't forget the part where the phone is attached to the wall. We extra long curly cords to try and get privacy. đ
Harrison felt he was the only person with the ability to do the re-issues (or whatever they are called) of Free As a Bird and Real Love, and he was right.
And a great music Producer!
so many people find beatles all over elo but they were their own sound. Just cause there's strings, harmonies with British voices and great production doesn't mean that Jeff lynne had the Beatles on his mind when he wrote or arranged this song. I'm sure he was a big beatles fan and shaped the elo sound with some Beatles songs in mind. But he had his own sound cause if you heard a section of an elo song you never heard before, you could deduce quickly it was an elo, not Beatles, song.
ELO were different and unique. The mixture of pop rock and lush orchestral music created a gorgeous sound all their own.
Unmatched to this day
E.L.O. - Living Thing - Turn to Stone - Sweet Talking Woman - Strange Magic - Do Ya
The theme of this song reminds me of "Operator" by Jim Croce, and "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor. Also perhaps, "Missing You" by Everything But The Girl, though that came later (1990s?). All are melancholy songs about lost love.
@@Renkk17 I wanna see the expression on their faces if they should ever swerve into to 'Face the Music'.
Are, not were.
Poor Brad. It's just in recent decades that people felt the need to put everything into a genre and check some kind of box. Back in the day everything was so new and experimental that we literally lived "outside the box". The only question you should ask about the songs you listen to is "did I enjoy it?".
absolutely.
Yeah that was his only comment on the song. Nothing about whether he liked the song or their sound.
"people" being the suits & bean-counters running media corporations !
That's kinda all they do in their reactions. Feels like they don't know what to talk about besides the genre and decade it's from lol.
Yep I just posted a comment to the same effect.
Jeff Lynn is a genius. ELO had a run in the mid-late 70's that was amazing.
John Lennon said ELO is what The Beatles would've sound like if they continued in the 70s.
@@KevinQ1989 you believed a guy who married Yoko Ono?
@@KevinQ1989 even if Lennon had never said it, I say it just about every time I hear them nowadays...something parallel about the two
@@pulsarlights2825 With John Lennon you would never quite know whether he meant that would be a direction to move in or a good reason to pack up when they did so it wouldn't happen!
I would incline towards the second.
As for who we marry; who goes out with a checklist of of cast-iron 'pros and cons' before finding the right women; they were as right for each other as most people would hope for.
@@KevinQ1989 Most times it was wise not to take John Lennon at face value.
This is an underrated ELO hit ... so good! The "doo wop" part shows this is part of the 50s music revival that happened in the 70s.
Underated by who?
"Don't Bring Me Down" is another ELO song that is good.
E.L.O. - Living Thing - Turn to Stone - Sweet Talking Woman - Strange Magic - Do Ya
Bruce!
It's Groose

I love Brad and Lex reactions. Brad is more logical right minded and Lex is more emotional left handed. It makes seeing things from both perspectives lovely.
There were days when songs like these were on our radios, blasting, singing along, windows down, cigarettes burning, no auto-tune, pure music, pure fun. We took these songs for granted, but now looking back, it was a golden age of musical genius. Brad got it right. Chorus and orchestra melded into a sound that is still touching us.
ELO was directly inspired by The Beatles, which you can definitely hear in this song, and threw some Doowop into the chorus for an old school vibe.
I thought John Lennon said ELO is the band the Beatles would have become if they hadn't split.
Great band. My favorite song of theirs is "Strange Magic" but they have so many amazing tunes.
Have a great day!
Strange Magic doesn't get enough love.
Stange Magic was my favorite
Strange magic and Tightrope bounce back and forth as my favorite ELO song lol
Strange Magic and Evil Woman are by far my favorites â€
ELO are class! I'm so glad my father used to play them! If only in the background as a child
This is a love ballad. All about loss and longing and a lover trying to reach his partner on the phone, and he's talking about the little plans lovers make together and being trapped in twilight means caught in between knowing and not knowing the state the relationship because he can't get through on the telephone .
Exactly! Someone knows their ELO knowledge!! ^5
exactly dead on point finally Thankyou soo much.
Brad, you are not alone in struggling to define ELO's sound. You are also right that it is a definite vibe. So much of a vibe that ELO had more combined Top 40 Hits (47) in the US & UK from 1972 to 1986 than ANY OTHER BAND IN THE WORLD! Electric Light Orchestra rules! Thanks for this one, Brad & Lex! Next from ELO, please react to, "Tightrope", it rocks, and has strings galore for Lex!
Livin' Thing!!! do it! do it! do it!
I know what it is you're trying to say. The violins in that music just soars and come in subtly and then all of a suddenly you have all of this orchestrated music blending in together with the harmonies and the violins's soaring music comes in soaring like birds the way it starts out. The lead singer, Jeff Lynne is talk singing the beginning his feelings about about trying to reach this person by telephone and he gets more in-depth describing his feelings. The music starts growing, the instruments starts coming in the orchestra starts coming in with the desperation of anticipating this person to respond to his phone calls and the feeling that he sings about of the sadness that they haven't picked up the telephone. And then maybe the hope that they will consider picking up that telephone. Jeff Lynne is a great storyteller with his lyrics and great lead singer he orchestrated everything he writes. The man is a musical genius. Please tell me if this is what you were talking about and trying to describe your feeling of this music đ»đ¶đ¶
Every time I hear this song it always makes me a little emotional, puts a little tear in the eye.
Keep in mind there were no cell phones, etc when this was written. This band is soooo good. More please. đșâïž
Brad- I like how you catch "The Vibe". ELO's music definitely has it's own "vibe" and sometimes you just have to go with it and admit you like / love it!
Jeff Lynne, the band founder, went on to create a new supergroup with: George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, the Travelling Wilburys.
"a" band founder. Why do people always forget Roy Wood, a multi instrumentalist, he had the most influence in incorporating the more orchestral instruments into ELO's music. The style definitely changed from slightly Progressive to a more Pop(y) style under Lynnes influence. Certainly made ELO more saleable
My favorite group of all time. I've been listening to them since the 70s. They have so many good hits to pick from. My favorite songs are "Mr. Blue Sky" and "Sweet Talking Woman". Thank you for reacting to this song.
ELO is an amazing band. Jeff Lynne is a masterful composer. Their music just puts me in an amazing mood.
One of the best classic Rock songs ever. Long live Jeff Lynne!
One of my favorite groups. Had the pleasure of seeing them live twice. They sound just as good in concert as their recordings.
Me too! : )
I fell in love with ELO in the early 70's because of their violins and unique sound. Lex, if you want to hear more orchestral sounds from them try "Living Thing". It's a little more upbeat than this song.
They have an amazing catalogue of songs! â€ïž
E.L.O. - Living Thing - Turn to Stone - Sweet Talking Woman - Strange Magic - Do Ya
It's A Livin' Thing is one of the songs you'll probably know. It's a masterpiece.
Slacks and sweaters?! Conjugal?! AAAAHAHAHA!! You guys kill me! I love it!
In the late 70's there was a revival of the late 50's Era Doo-Wop music. Many bands including ELO embraced the vocal doowop style and music style influenced by the late 50's rock and roll. The TV show Happy Days and the movie Greese were the big hits at this time.
Ahhhh ELO... one the most musically intellectual underrated bands in UK music history. PLLLLEASE don't stop covering them with this song alone!
Brad&Lex, You'll love their "Evil Woman", "Do Ya", and "Strange Magic"!!!
Fire on High
Do Ya is epic and fun.
@@JRcomments oh yeah the really good stuff
ELO is one of those bands people thank you for turning them on to. They have such a grand sound. You can sense the intelligence in the music. I highly recommend watching Jeff Lynne's ELO - Live at Wembley. LEX, you should check out Roll Over Beethoven or Rockaria!.
Yes - Intelligence in the music. Key Words đ
One of my favorite bands!!â€
This song live is đ„
You hit it right on the head Brad, it's called the doo-wop sound, that is a real category...
ELO is in a class of their own. Their rabbit hole is deep. GOOD STUFF,,,đ„đ„đ„đđ
This song came out in 1976, same year as one of my sons. LOL
You should see it live at Wembley Stadium.
I know yâall like lyric videos. I get it! But puhlease check out the live at Wembley version of this, itâs amazing â€ïž Jeff Lynne is a genius!
The SOUND is TOTALLY ELO! There's nothing else like it!
For me, the vibe is nostalgic--especially because it was always meant to sound old even when it was released.
Nostalgic is how I would put it as well.
Jeff Lynne is one of the greatest minds that music ever produced...producing, writing,.. he's influenced just about every artists in rock.
Possibly the best musician from the UK shores, yet unknown by so many. He will become instantly famous and appreciated once it is too late, doubt we will see his like again.
I Love ELO Electric Light Orchestra I played them so much in a store I worked in everyone heard them. I lOve thier sound and they make you feel good , their music shows so much talent and grabs your attention. Would have loved to seen one of thier concerts. Mr. Blue Sky is my ringtone They have a DREAMY FEEL GOOD VIBE, thier music sucks you in and you are pulled into it and feel it to me its like being just calming , like a breeze and you enjoy it as it washes over you
ELO is amazing they have some of the most beautiful rock music of the 70s. There greatest hits is awesome.
ELO is another goody I listened to as a teenager. They have so many great songs.
ELO has its own sound. No one is like âem!
Old School. Back In Time. Nostalgia. Love This Song. â€đ
Queen, Styx, and several others of the 70's had this sound, harmonizing!!
Top tier band ⊠strange magic and all over the world
The word for the vibe is great. Itâs just great. Nothing to overthink here.
My favorite ELO song. Thanks guys. And especially thanks how you appreciate certain things Lex.
I remember listening to ELO in my dads car. I still love their music even today. đŹ
My all time favorite band. Great reaction of a beautiful melancholy song.
Back in the days of red phone boxes over here in England. This song takes me hurtling back, a sad song but too flipping good to not still enjoy it and appreciate the feeling! I recall hearing this playing out on a radio as I was walking past such a phone box in Weymouth on the south coast of England, I was 12 years old in '77, the year Elvis passed on!
I love watching Brad to to describe the sound, because you can't really describe something unique....there's 50's doo wap, classical, soft rock, abd blues all rolled into there usual (for the time) techno sounds.
Brad's got the vibe. This song borrowed heavily from the 50's sound called Doo Wop. The sound was based on harmonies and was kind of romanticized by groups singing on city corners. it was all performed a cappella or with minimal instrumentation. And his little move was spot on, called a slide.
Yes, Doo Wop, symphony plus Beatles,
yeah but doo wap was just a small part of the song. Reactors get too hung up on it
Incorporated so many song styles on this one...đ„đ„đ„đ¶đ”
'A new world's record', awesome album, every song on side B is a hit.
Roll over Beethoven, Do ya, Ma Ma Belle, Living Thing, Rock n Roll is king, Don't bring me down are đ.
No no guys! You need to see their live performance at Wembley stadium! Im about to see them in April with believe me my 16 year old daughter who loooves ELO! I know! So excited! But guys you need to check out more of their music ⊠say âtightropeâ or âMr blue skyâ or something more funky from their extensive catalogue. Love you guys đđ„°â€ïžđđ
It's a fantastic song! And don't forget! Back in the day, when this song was made, a telephone line was the only main route of non-physical connection! No Tik Tok, Whatsapp, Facebook etc! We're way back in the good old days before the internet!

1st time hearing ELO was on a K-Tel album called "The Rock Album" and song was Don't bring me down. Rock on Brad & Lex
Wow..i had forgotten all about k-tel.
K-Tel was secretly cutting everything in half though
I had that album too when i was a little kid. Think it had styxx Arrowsmith Kansas ELO others. Long time ago
@@thejoker9201 absolutely that's the record lol.
That look of bliss on her face... thatâs exactly why I gave an ELO playlist for happiness. Do Starlight next!
Brad & Lex, thank you both. You are hitting the right vibe. Jeff Lynne is THE FIFTH BEATLE., who he idolized. Thank you for playing a TRUE CLASSIC. Jeff Lynne. Electric Light Orchestra, E.L.O..
I encourage you to watch Jeff Lynne and ELO play this live -- incredible.
And for a fun, feel-good ELO song, try "Don't Bring Me Down." So much fun.
Easily one of the best rock vocalists ever.
Hilarious đ
I don't know 'bout all that. Rock has had some amazing vocalists, and, while good, his voice is easily the weakest of his many talents, far behind his songwriting, producing, arrangements and imaginative creativity. If it wasn't for those other factors, I don't think he'd have been successful on his voice alone.
Jeez, I've been singing Lynne's praises in comments for so long, it feels weird to be the one sounding a sour note here. But gotta be honest - not to be would diminish everything I've said about his brilliance in all those other areas.
Yes, such a creative genius... don't cha love how in the intro, the vocals sound as if you're hearing someone at the other end of an old school land line. That slight echoe-y, tinny distance. So clever! ...and then the sound morphs into a normal face-to-face sound. Again, thanks....haven't listened to this song in ages!
You've got to listen to this a bunch of times to get the feel for it but it's a classic for sure from the legendary ELO.
ELO is often heavy with strings... it's their trademark sound. I could easily list a dozen+ ELO songs you should listen to but I'll start with Tightrope (super orchestral intro) and Mr. Blue Sky.
Mr Blue Sky should be played in total with the other 3 tracks making up the great ' Concerto for a rainy day'
ELO is one of the best bands from the 70s and have a unique sound. Jeff Lynne is a genius and has given us so many great songs. Canât Get it Out Of My Head is my fav
This telephone sound of the 50's 60's is what your feeling, trying to talk to someone you love -- if you just pick up that phone.
Yall do all the right bands and songs đ
Well most of the time, they get the songs from suggestions during their livestream and they'll put em on a poll. Lots of times there are songs that i like but will lose on the polls because the band isn't as popular as the ones that usually win. (not always)
@@cesarnarro6013 However they do it, I like what ends up on the channel. I don't usually watch livestreams, because they take too long, but what ends up on this channel is what I want to see anyway, for the most part, so whatever they're doing, they're doing it right.
Jeff Lynne: Musical genius. The soundtrack of my youth.
Musical genius..absolutely!!
This song is almost overwhelmingly "Beatle-esque."
Unique, innovative and talented, is ELO! This is a treasure trove of great music. You can't go wrong with this group, just dive deep. Evil Woman, Strange Magic, The Diary of Horace Wimp, any of their songs really. They remind me of the Beatles at times. Worthy of you two checking them out.i hope you do Brad, Lex seemed to enjoy them, give ELO a further listen. Enjoy and peace.
I got to see them when I was 12. Before I even knew who they were. Super cool.
Always loved ELO. Just a unique band and sound. There music holds up really well today.
70s music was so much better than 80s music and now your starting to understand đđđđ
Not that I totally disagree cuz 70's music was awesome, but 1982 & 83 (New Wave) had some fantastic sounds too.

Very popular band in the late 70's. Great time to be alive, the world was a much better place to live in, great music came out of those years.
"Sweet Talking Woman" is a great song by ELO
Now they need to do the âLive at Wembleyâ video version of this song. Very emotional! Lex will love seeing the strings.
Definitely Sweet Talkin Woman but the studio version is much better

Lex got the chills for a moment. I think Brad did too but heâs not letting on. What you heard, Brad, was deep emotion.
The sound in this song is huge sounds extremely big. It's amazing đ
Jeff Lynne has the 2nd coolest beard in history, obviously Chuck Norris is Number 1
When i was a little boy I thought ELO's music was a magical experience to me. It made me play in my imagination. Its obvious Jeff Lynne lived this telephone line experience, i can just feel it. Jeff is a genius and the band still is magical to me 50 years later
50's doo wop vibe. Beatles. Soulful. The orchestral backing gives it an old black and white film vibe.
you can tell they were super into that 50s Doo Wop sound, but in my opinion it is PERFECTED in this song. harmonizing vocals arent usually my thing, but in this tune, oh my damn, they are so good and crisp
Speaking of the lyric "twilight", I highly recommend "Prologue/Twilight" from their Time album. It's when they first started embracing synths after being mostly analog. It's a real shift in their sound, but a wonderful opener.
Fusion of pop, classical arrangements and futuristic iconography.
A very unique and creative style
I think the word you're looking for Brad is "melancholy", a combination of sadness with hope. Lex, I love your 70's look, especailly the headband...cool.
I'm not _entirely_ sure "conjugal" means what Lex thinks it means, but I'm here for her vibe!
she thought the telephone line is the one in prison where you talk to your girlfriend thru the glass. Arranging a conjugal visit đ
I was 4 when this came out. Such a vibe. It was so different & memorable.
Jeff was in the supergroup The Traveling Wilbury's with Tom Petty.
This was from one of their final albums from their original era between the 70s-80s.
We need more ELO

One of the best heartbreak songs in rock. Just think children; your heart is I pieces, no device, no internet, no instant gratification. Just you, your broken heart and your thoughts. Then this song comes on and you cry your eyes out. Back then music was all we had and it was extremely powerful.
Unique and extremely talented which, in my opinion, is what makes a band truly great.
My oldest son broke me out of hospital twice to see ELO, once to see them in Hyde Park in 2014 and also to sit in a muddy field at Glastonbury in 2016. It was two different hospitals for two different injurie's at the end of my service career. It was always great to see Jeff Lynne's ELO live, even if it meant having to face my wife's anger afterwards. This song reminds me of how much I loved talking to my family when I was posted over seas.
Listen to more! â€ïž they have something for everybody. My favorite band ever!
The word youâre trying to come up with is magic the word magic. Itâs something spellbinding itâs called electric light Orchestra! Thank you Jeff Lynn
Brad is sooooo great. The best best reactions are those where he is finally impressed with ancient music.
