    Great video Graeme. I decided to change all the bolts on my trailer to stainless steel pretty early on when I first got my boat. Every nut and bolt that goes into the water is now stainless. Glad I did it. Anything you need to do to your trailer later is much easier and you don't need to cut bolts and damage the galvanized coating on the main frame. I would recommend it although it probably cost about €150 to do. I will have to start looking at replacing the hubs this winter and brakes again. The suspension was never really something I gave any thought to, but this needs to be looked at too. Thanks for the hints and tips!

    Thanks Graeme. Excellent work and presentation. I installed some roller bunks last year. Took out the wood and carpet. and re-aligned all the keel rollers. I have used 4-0 steel wool on the spindles by hand rubbing. I noticed you have no grease seals on the inside bearings? That keeps the water out. My boat is only 14 ft and I do fish alone sometimes. I admire your fortitude to take that bigger boat out by yourself. You have inspired me to do some trailer maintenance. NW Montana.

    British roads, don't get me started, apparently you can get compensation from the council for pothole damage but my mate thinks the bad roads are a conspiracy between the alloy refurbishers and tyre, shocks manufacturers the government !!! In NZ they say Boat stands for "burn another thousand ". Great video as usual and have garage envy. Ps. Graham you probably know this but in case you don't, make sure you cold galv the areas with exposed metal where you ground the nuts off and clean off any grinding dust off your car or you will get millions of rust spots on the paintwork if it gets wet. Cheers

    All part of running a boat, had to do my rollers and fit a new axle to my trailer cost is ridiculous for parts, hope you get a few more years out of it now you have put in all the work. (should have got mike to do the heavy work) keep the great videos coming.

  • @davidharvey5672
    @davidharvey5672 Před 6 lety

    Job well done Greame. I don't have a trailer for mine ( Shetland 610) it only comes out for outboard maintenance each year and of course anti fouling every two or three years. Got no where to store it if I had one or a car good enough to pull it anyway. Also at 22ft over the outboard and an 8ft beam a bit of a lump on the roads. Looks like you eliminate the need for anti foul by taking it out every time and rinsing it down.

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  Před 6 lety +1

      Yeah,when I first got the boat I thought about leaving in expensive marina = anti foul,worry if bilge working in heavy rain,had anybody pinched anything off it,would the batteries stay charged etc,against the expense and hassle of towing where I have the boat dry,no antifouling,its outside my office,I can run the engine to charge batteries,and work on it when I want, plus tow where I want.If I had the boat in a marina for say,last 8 years at £2000 a year,plus anti fouling etc I would be into £17,000, and although I've had repairs,tyres,bearings,a new clutch etc it still doesn't add up to £17,000 so I think I will stick with the towing hassle and security of boat at my home.If I lived near the sea I would probably have opted for a marina /pontoon mooring. Our road quality is my main concern. Some of it is shocking .

    • @davidharvey5672
      @davidharvey5672 Před 6 lety

      TAFishing yes you live in an expensive part of the world down there. Cost you a fraction of that at say Lowestoft but then you wouldn't have the fish which is what you have it for. Fishing off here is bad and beach fishing is a forgotten pass time around here. The last cod run was 4 years ago I think no one's seen one since. My boat is on the broads and for 22ft costs about 760 quid a year. The owners house is on site plus surrounded by homes. I payed 500 quid for pull out full service impeller all filters oil etc and antifoul.

    Graeme hi we used to use some blue waterpipe,4inch i think,cut in half length ways then lay thin carpet/lino along the round of cut pipe and cable tie it on so the bend of the half pipe would also act as a sort of pressure buffer cause yes,our roads arent great.im no expert but it realy helped!hard to explain without a diagram.hope it may help someone.ta

    Hi, nice trailer but a little concerned about putting those old bearings back on the new axles, the old axle had fret corrosion marks starting on it which means there has been movement between the bearing and axle. Then the ease at which you put the bearings on the new axle was another indication of wear. Just keep a close eye on the amount of movement you get in the wheels, if you get uneven tyre wear, change them bearings immediately. I changed the whole assemblies on my also trailer because they had worn a little and the handling of the trailer improved instantly.

    Graham,get rid of the carpet and spray the skids with silicon spray.Use the hard red polythene rollers for the keel on a glass boat(Blue on aluminium like mine)Those black rubber ones are too soft and flatten out becoming gouged as your finding out.
    Get yourself a length of stainless steel round,cut to length and make your own roller shafts drilling a hole in the ends and fitting stainless steel split pins(You'll never worry about them again).I'd change those torsion bar suspension units for leaf springs if at all possible.What idiot thought it was a great idea on a boat trailer.Also can you get galvanised hubs over there?
    Please learn to pack bearings properly.Bearings do need to have a pre-load(No play whatsoever).

  • @LordClunk
    @LordClunk Před 6 lety

    For future reference, use diesel to clean bearings and metal. I cant remember why, but I know using petrol is not ideal.

    • @DjDolHaus86
      @DjDolHaus86 Před 6 lety

      Diesel behaves more like an oil so leaves a slight protective coating rather than evaporating off and leaving exposed metal. If you are planning on painting the thing you're cleaning then petrol is the better option of the two

    Use a 1mm thick cutting disk and slice through the old bolts, easier than grinding them away

    Good old torsion arm suspension I think leaf springs would be better for the long haul

    • @DjDolHaus86
      @DjDolHaus86 Před 6 lety

      The problem with leaf springs is that the salt water gets trapped between the sections and rots them from the inside out

    • @philplatts6433
      @philplatts6433 Před 6 lety

      TjDolHaus86 seems bad anyway you look at it as his torsion suspension had the same issue

    • @DjDolHaus86
      @DjDolHaus86 Před 6 lety

      There is no escaping the old tin worm around salt water, the torsion arm has its issues but the compact packaging and relative cheapness makes it a winner in most instances. With leaf springs you need a lot of extra metalwork to house the dampers (an extra expense/failure point in themselves), added weight and the increased carriage height makes the whole lot less appealing

    • @philplatts6433
      @philplatts6433 Před 6 lety +1

      TjDolHaus86 guess there are pros and cons in most things mechanical

    • @DjDolHaus86
      @DjDolHaus86 Před 6 lety

      True enough, in this instance the low cost and simplicity are stronger qualities than overall lifespan

  • @wizzard363
    @wizzard363 Před 6 lety

    Carpet is not a good idea . It soaks up salt water , the water evaporates and fill the carpet with salt crystals that will cause more damage than you had before

    Are you sure you don’t live in Oklahoma?

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  Před 6 lety +1

      Absolutely.Otherwise I would be driving a big tyre Pontiac 350 ZM twin turbo with 4 kits of NOX, laser injected fuel response and graphic stabilising exhaust compression so when I punched the pedal in a street race my lips would cross the line before my ears !! Unfortunately I live in the UK where the only thing that gets punched is my suspension by our horrific,poorly maintained,pothole ridden roads.

    I suspect you need a braked trailer. That trailer is probably 120kg, engine 100kg, hull 500kg, fuel,anchor,ropes,battery,etc easily more than 30kg! So expect that is an illegal rig.

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  Před 6 lety

      Its the standard "Flyer" rigout,must have been hundreds of them made over the years .Its a lightweight hull,skeleton trailer ,though some run a 70hp on the back,mine is the lighter 60 . not to be confused with other 17 footers which are normally way heavier rigs.
