Yes, I heard that too. There's info/recipes for cooking oatmeal in a rice or slow cooker. One recipe says to cook the oatmeal for about 7 to 8 hours.

    • @snookie65

Yes, I make a double batch (2 C. of steel cut oats) for the week. It takes about 7 hours. A single batch takes about 6 hours. Use a slow cooker liner for easier clean up as it can stick. We love it with apples cooked in, I also add some vanilla bean infused raw sugar (about 2 T.). So good!

In my country, the steel cut oats are used in a lot of dishes. One popular dish is called Jareesh. And it's up to you if you want to cook it with yogurt/buttermilk (white Jareesh), or with tomatoes and tomato paste (red Jareesh).

I use steel cut oats on the weekend when i have the spare time to cook them and rolled oats through the week when i have limited time for work. I usually cook them with Almond milk and add a sliced banana and a pinch of Cinnamon whilst cooking then when finished put a drizzle of smooth Almond butter over the top and add blueberries, yummy!!!! ( on Sundays i treat myself to scrambled eggs on multi grain toast with Avocado and pepper, also yummy haha!! )

I love to cook half a cup of Quaker 100% whole grain quick 1 minute oats, one cup of plain unsweetened almond milk and I always had a teaspoon of agave maple syrup. From there I might add blueberries or/Strawberries and creamer/ or Raisins or /Apples and cinnamon or/ just cinnamon/sometimes 1/2 banana.

I love overnight oats. It is such a time-saver in the morning and so delicious. I make mine with 1/4 cup of rolled oats, 1/4 cup greek yogurt, 1/4 cup milk, 1 ripe banana, about a tablespoon of blueberry's, 1/2 teaspoon of honey and a sprinkle of mixed spice. Mix it all together and leave it in the fridge overnight. Yum!

  • @maremacd
    @maremacd Před 10 lety +4

I make a large batch of steel-cut oatmeal and eat it throughout the week, heating it for a minute in the microwave. I prepare the oatmeal by soaking the oats overnight in water and a little lemon juice. I rinse the grain, add fresh water, and it cooks up in 15 minutes or so. Once cooked, I stir in cinnamon, coconut oil, unsweetened apple sauce, and seeds (pumpkin, chia, and/or hemp). I portion it out, and when I reheat a portion, I'll add fresh or frozen berries or other fruit and sometimes nuts.

Interesting approach to oatmeal...I grew up on oatmeal; which I despised and vowed never to eat again! As an adult, I've re-discovered it but learned I enjoyed it with much less of that texture you and Dani speak of-it's that tendency for oatmeal to thicken and resemble 'concrete' I can't take. So I use quick or instant oatmeal, cooked with plenty milk and topped with banana (or some other fruit). I have to make it fresh each time. I couldn't take it reheated.

My new favorite is overnight oats. I use about 1/2 to 2/3 cup oats and 3/4 to 1 cup coconut milk (depends on how thick or runny you like oats). Plus, 1/4 cinnamon and about 1 1/2 tsp brown sugar. Sometimes I add coconut flakes and cacao nibs. I personally like mine to sit for 2 days before eating, but 1 day is fine too. Quick, yummy, filling and super healthy. My friend adds fruit and chia seeds.

I only eat steel-cut oats. They are so good and I love the chewiness. I learned how to cook them overnight from your video: ''How To Make Clean Eating Overnight Steel Cut Oats''. I put 2 rice-cooker measures of steel-cut oats into my 5-cup rice cooker. Then add 6 measures of boiling water from the water kettle, cover the rice cooker with lid. I set the delayed timer for when I want breakfast and press the steam function for 2 minutes. I wake up to fresh, hot steel-cut oatmeal ready for me. (I used to cook them with a ton of boil over before seeing your video....so I thank you.)

My favorite recipe is steel cut oats, with oat bran, chia seeds, ground flax seed, blackstrap molasses, apple slices, protein powder, collagen powder, and freeze dried tofu broken up into little pieces, plus cinnamon, ginger, and cloves. I have a little fresh, and freeze dry the rest for another day. The FD’d stuff cooks up in a minute in the microwave. About 25-30 g of protein, and a ton of fiber.

Oatmeal joins quinoa in my gluten-free supply pantry. I don't even check to be sure the oatmeal is absolutely gluten-free -- it usually is and I'm not that picky. Ordinary oatmeal on sliced fresh okra dipped in an egg wash makes a wonderful skillet-fried okra -- very good with homemade mashed potatoes and a side of sliced tomatoes. I'm not even vegetarian, but this is one of my favorite "treat meals!" Really good channel -- I subscribed. Greetings from France.

I put it in a bowl with some cinnamon powder, toasted almonds, a tablespoon of peanut butter, apricots and dates. I top it all of with some almond milk. so essentially it's like oatmeal cereal that kind of thickens as you eat.

Added 1/3 cup of oats (from Aldi), 1 cup of water.. let it boil and simmer for about 15 mins until the bottom of the pan was visible.. then added 2 dashes of cinnamon, 3 tablespoons of 1% milk and topped it off with 1/4 cup of peanut butter granola (from Costco) and 1 fistful of blueberries. Came out tasting so good and just under 300 calories!!

We buy groats in bulk and roll them ourselves with a small machine designed for that purpose. That way we avoid all processing and still have the benefit of quick cooking times. Typically I microwave a third of a cup of oats and two-thirds of a cup of water for 80 seconds and then add either a teaspoon of maple syrup or a covering of wheat germ depending on whether I'm eating it for a late-night snack or for breakfast.

As a kid I used to ear raw porridge oats with Semi Skimmed Milk and a little sugar. After being on a diet I stopped the sugar. If it was a cold day I might start with cooked porridge oats with syrup. Later in life I rotate Muesli 2 days a week (I actually prefer Sainsbury's cheapest as it has less nuts and dried fruit added). I then have 2 other cereals (2 days each) and Sunday treat is a thick slice of toast with 2 or 3 eggs depending how I cook them, Normally 2 if Fried or Poached and 3 if scrambled. Then once a month the Sunday is turned into a Full Cooked Breakfast and eaten as a Brunch

Thanks for explaining the different oats, I listen to a lot of English breakfasts which they call porridge and me from the US we call this just plain oatmeal.

    I do that every day.

I really appreciate this video and have added oats to my diet. I would love to see a video about Barley. I am very confused Unhulled, hulled, pearled, etc. Some say: DON'T eat unhulled barley and other say definitely eat it as it is more of a whole grain. (Thanks for all your videos, they are helping me eat in a more healthy way).

Rolled oats are tasty and quick to prepare, and in an emergency can be eaten uncooked. My idea of quick is to boil them for 15 minutes, to get a smooth slimy porridge. One half of the water volume must be milk, it reduces bitterness and makes any cooked grains stick together. Oat packages come with a spectrum of instructions from 3 to 9 minutes plus a few off-flame. I can't really see a difference in the thickness of those flakes.
I find that oats accept relatively large amount of sugar. On 6 cups of oats (not dense) about 1 cup of sugar. And I wouldn't describe the result as particularly sweet. Wheat I can eat with little sugar, it seems naturally sweet like white bread, and barley and buckwheat with none at all. Both wheat and barley are "cut" and take about 25 min to cook.
I've never seen whole grain oats for sale here. Maybe they are in specialized sections and cost more. Rolled oats are popular and very cheap.
The microwave must be one of those inverter ones, to cook such a small amount without boiling it over.

I take the water I use for old-fashioned oatmeal and blend it with a medjool date, so I satisfy my sweet tooth without all the bad sugar.
I top it with cinnamon, crushed almonds, chia seeds, and nutmeg.
Some days if I'm feeling daring, I'll make a chai spiced old-fashioned oatmeal, with ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and milk.
Also use the oats for granola!

That's how I like them. Let the oats soak for a while, bring it to a boil, then take it off the stove and let it sit a few minutes.
