- Join us for a Spanish Food Tour in Valencia, Spain at central market (mercado central) as we sample many tasty savory and sweet bites. Located just a stone throw away from our apartment we visited the mercat central on an almost daily basis to pick-up groceries such as fresh produce and delicious local meats and cheeses. However, our mission was different this time. Our plan was to visit the Central Market in Valencia to have as many tasty Spanish snacks as we possibly could handle including both savory and sweet items. With this in mind we ate the following food items:
1) Sandwich with serrano ham (Bocadillo de jamón serrano)
2) Ham and cheese in a cup (Jamón serrano y queso)
3) Empanadas with tuna and onion (Empanadilla de atún y cebolla)
4) Spanish Tortilla with chorizo slices (Tortilla española con chorizo)
5) Almond and sugar cakes (Mantecadas y polvorones)
6) Pig's ear or Elephant ear pastries (Palmeras)
7) Fruit juice (Zumo de frutas)

Spanish Food Tour at Central Market in Valencia, Spain Video Transcript:
Today's video is going to be a food adventure. We're making our way over to the Central Market here in Valencia (Mercado Central de Valencia). Which is right outside our door. We had views from our apartment window overlooking the market just footsteps away. We've already been a few times to do our grocery shopping but we also noticed they have lots of tasty bites so you can actually turn your visit into a meal. So that is what we're planning to do. I've even got my little grocery bag in case we see something for dinner. That is the plan. Let's go eat Spanish food.
Our first snack of the day is going to be a sandwich filled with jamón serrano (Bocadillo de jamón serrano). That means ham from the mountains from the sierras. I'm just opening it up here. Look at that. A thing of beauty in the sandwich. They asked me if I wanted olive oil drizzled all over it so I was like yeah! It was only 1 Euro.
Time for our second snack here at the market. Alright second tasty snack. And this one is only 2 Euros so we're having Serrano ham. There we go Jamón serrano y queso right? And this one is only 2 Euros.
This is our third snack right here. It is called empanadilla and it is filled with tuna and onion (Empanadilla de atún y cebolla ). It kind of resembles the empanadas that you find in Latin America. How much was it? 1.10 Euros.
We're going to be trying the tortilla and we ordered the one with chorizo and it is served with a slice of bread and they also gave us some allioli sauce.
So this should be pretty good & scrumptious. Our forth snack. We're still going strong guys. Not close to being full yet.
Time to try that. You already had a bite of the chorizo for our Spanish version so I'm insisting that you save that piece for me. I know it is good. It is wonderful with this garlic sauce.
We are trying something completely new. Apparently it is a dessert that is from Spain. We got three different kinds and I've just opened the first one up. This one is called polvorones de canela. It is cinnamon.
This one is called Mantecada. This is polvorone.
These were three Euros for the 3 of them.
Moving on to dessert. This is called Palmera. It is 1 Euro.
Gotta wash it down with a little fruit juice. This was 1.50 Euros.
That was a very fun visit to the Central Market (Mercado Central).
If you want to visit the Central Market (Mercat Central) here in Valencia a few things you should know. It is open from 8 to 3 pm everyday except for Sunday. So Monday through Saturday and there is a lot of produce and meat shops great for picking up groceries.
This is part of our Travel in Spain video series showcasing Spanish food, Spanish culture and Spanish cuisine.

On my last trip to Spain 🇪🇸 (only 2 trips) I had no plans to stop by Valencia on my way from Madrid to Barcelona. Just before we took the trip I told my wife that we should at least stop by and stay one day. We ended up staying 3 days. I regretted not staying longer. I really liked Madrid and Barcelona. However, my heart ♥️ got stolen in Valencia. That damn city kept it.
Soy valenciana !!! Adoro mi tierra , sus fiestas : las fallas , la paella sus mercados
Viva Valencia!!! Saludos à todos los valencianos fuera de España desde Francia.☺
Gracias. Eso es genial de escuchar
pero madonna es mejor que valencia
Wow, so many delicious foods
Watching this video as a Spaniard and listening to “jamón serrano” as ham from the Sierra OMG I almost choked with my breakfast. It doesn’t mean that!! Hahahaha
Love this...thank you for sharing your experiences! 🥰

Every time I'm planning a trip I'm so happy when you guys have posted videos about the place 😊 I'm moving in a few years to spain and now looking into moving to Valencia. The food there looks amazing.
Thank you very much!~ That is so exciting to hear. Valencia is a very liveable city.
Welcome to Valencia, we made it our home 10 years ago and still love it. We're currently living though right around the corner from your place though.
Wow! That is so cool to hear. You picked a great spot to live.
We love it here - Valencia changed a lot though, it's finally on the radar.
I am looking into moving to Valencia next year to study. I am super excited
So glad I came across you guys. Beautiful people
Thank you very much Carol!
Absolutely brilliant video.hoping to go to Valencia in September and will definitely be spending time in that market.very informative.thank you
Thanks Steven! That is awesome to hear. We ended up going back time and again given the quality of food and reasonable prices.
I survived! The sandwich with serrano ham (Bocadillo de jamón serrano) is something that I could live on! No matter where, France, Germany... where ever... give me super fresh bread with some kind of great meat and cheese, and I'm in heaven. Jo, on the other hand, is all about the sweet (particularly chocolate)!
Hahaha...glad to hear you survived. I know what you mean! Those sandwiches are just the best and Audrey is the one with more of a sweet tooth but I have to admit I have one too :)
I love going to the local markets
COol to hear! So do we :)

What a wide selection of juices! I couldn't have walked away without trying at least 2.
Visited Valencia a few years ago, and frequented the same market many times. Enjoyed all the fresh produce, jamon and other goodies. I might have stayed in the same Airbnb 😊. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! That is so cool to hear. We went daily and just loved the experience of being there and also grocery shopping. We show our apartment on the day we leave Valencia for Granada.
I love Spanish food ♥️
Great to hear!
This is such a great video guys thanks.Let's keep in touch
Really like your videos of Portugal and Spain! I love it because the videos are like halfway between a Travel Channel and Man vs Food!!
Thank you very much! We really enjoyed revisiting both Spain and Portugal. They are two of our favorite countries in Europe and it was great to show my parents around both for the 1st time.
Sam , you are a very lucky guy!

I’m leaving for Valencia in 9 days and my apartment is also by the Mercat! This vlog (and the others you made) are super helpful, you guys are showing a normal trip rather than a glamorous one like a lot of other travel vlogs are showing! Thanks!

Greetings from Warsaw^^
Thank you very much! Do you have a favorite market you've visited? Ah, we really miss Warsaw. We visited in 2015 and loved it.
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos 2015?!:O thats a really long time no see:D a lot of new foodplaces here to try^^ on weekends the one called: "Hala Gwardii" you will like that:*
really enjoyed the video, Valencia is a very cheap city and you can have lunch/dinner spending very few money. hope to see another video about Valencia, you guys are really good and i love watching your videos.
Thank you very much! We have another food video (paella) and a Valencia travel guide to come next :)
I'm surprised you haven't had lunch at the restaurant in the central market.Awesome food there.
I was there, I love this place.
Cool to hear! We loved it too.
Wow beautiful good video I like
Thank you!
Hi guys! Watching this video, I became a fan of yours. Although I'm in Seoul now, this video encouraged me to have a plan for Spain food trip!! Thank you so much. Hope you and your family are well.
Thank you! That is so cool to hear!
Pasar por Teruel qué lo pasaréis muy bien también. Y será por jamón 😁
Jamon serrano is so good, but I've never gotten to eat it in Valencia before. Thanks for the cool video!
Thank you! Hope you can try it there next time. Where is the best you've had?
Only had what gets imported to Asia! :) Hopefully I'll get to eat it in Spain one day
I love your videos, I always want to eat when I watch them :)
Thank you! Wish we could share.
Nice food review - thanks for being completely honest and sincere about what you liked and what you didn't like eating. I hate when food reviewers say everything is amazing, haha.
Thank you! We're trying to get better at that. We honestly enjoy most things we have but we're making a point to say what we don't as well.
Those polvorones and mantecados are traditional sweets only eaten during Christmas. Top tip: squeeze them in your hand before you open them! lol P.S Manteca is actually pork lard, a very traditional ingredient.
Oh, thank you for explaining that thoroughly. Cool to hear they are popular during Christmas.
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos Audrey la próxima vez que comas polvorones o mantecados navideños, aprieta con la mano antes de abrir el papel y así no se desmenuza tanto, lo comerás más fácil. 👍
Exactamente y eso precisamente es parte de lo que escribí en inglés jeje.
New to this channel☺ mmm nice 😋 this is what me and the wife do when we are in europe 🍻 we always try the local food 👍 much better than egg beans chips and a cup of tea 😂😂 hi from the uk
Wow ... I was just there last year. Wasn't it amazing? There were similar markets in Tarragona and Seville too, I think.
Thanks! So cool you were there last year. Totally amazing. Ah, would love to try those ones as well. Did they differ much from each other?
Here's a slideshow from Tarragona (just threw it together so ... not so fancy) (slow download!): hudsonvalleyhikers.com/Tarragona!.pdf
I also visited Madrid and Barcelona, of course, plus Lisbon, Valencia, Cordoba and a couple of other places.
Thanks for sharing that!
This seems to be a very charming place, I hope I can visit sometime in the future when all this is over. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much! And please keep up the great job! Subscribed!!
Thanks!
Lovely Valencia where I lived for a year back in the 1980's. You should have tried the following dishes which are typical Valencian dishes: Arroz al horno - oven rice baked with chorizo, sausage, vegetables, meats and also all i pebre - a dish with fresh eels in a garlic and pepper sauce - all i pebre means garlic and pepper in the Valencian language (dialect of Catalan).
Those sound delicious!
Yummy 😊😋
Thanks! It sure was. So many tasty bites and nothing was expensive. We could have gone all day long :)
Well I guess I need to save a lot of money for me to visit Spain and try those foods 😢😭
Hope you can soon.
Soon 😊😇
Mantecados and polvorones are a typical Christmas desert.
Great to know. Thanks.
That place looks amazing! I want to try everything you guys had. The heart shaped thing at the end reminds me of the almond cookies at the Chinese buffet by me. They taste better dipped in ice cream 😊
Thank you! We sure had a lot to eat and we could have kept going had we not got so stuffed ;) Oh, dipping in ice cream sounds like an excellent idea.
In Argentina you have empanadas de atun, delicious! Here in Dallas TX we have just one Argentinean bakery and they make empanadas de atun only for lent season.
Yum! What a foodie vlog. I'm so looking forward to visiting here. The only thing I'm concerned about is that I have to eat gluten free, hope theres lots of options 🤞💓
THank yoU! I can imagine they have gluten free items in the market. They have so much variety.
You guys are so cute ❤️ I love to watch your videos
Thank you very much.
Watching this we going to Valencia end of June we stopping near the cathedral
Thanks Matthew
All the food you tasted we have that in the Philippines, polvoron, empanada, flaky pastry called " otap.
Hola de nuevo xd. Más información. La empanadilla es originaria de España. Se hace de todo desde carnes. Verduras pescados.
I was there 3 years ago but all I saw was expensive. You have looked better than me :)
Thank you!
great informative videos.keep it up.
I plan to retire to live in spain but not for another 6 years, but at this moment in time,
which area is cheapest for property rent/buy and cost of living.... velencia, alicante, mercia, denia,la marina
thanks.
Jason(UK)
Hi guys, another great video! I'm planning my next travel and i'm stuck between Portugal and Spain. Food is very important in my travels and being a born brazilian i would for sure eat some brazilian food in both countries but for local food ,which country would you recommend?
Charles, you might enjoy Spain more since I would imagine Brazil and Portugal share some similarities with cuisine.
Good thinking. Do you think a 7day trip to Madrid is enough or should i include another city, say Valencia?@@samuelandaudrey
Hi! What time of year did you guys make your visit to Valencia? It looks like it's a bit cold, but the video seems like it was posted in the spring! Just curious about weather. Thanks for uploading!
Thanks Nyasha! We actually visited in mid-Feb. I think we got a bit lucky with warmer than usual temperatures for that time of year.
Well.... I haven't had breakfast yet... so, watching this is going to be a very big mistake!
Ah, sorry for that!
What was the name and address of the apartment you stayed in across the market? We are planning to visit in December.
I miss spain so much! Hope to go again after the pandemic
Thanks! Hope you can soon!
You guys travel so much, I am bit jealous! What you guys do for a living if you dont mind me asking
Do you what hotels are nearby that market? I am planning a trip. Thanks
I remember being in that Market Place a few years ago. Not for the food ( which was divine ) but because about a quarter of a mile away it sounded like a Volcano was exploding.
Ah - that was Las Fallas.
That must have been quite the experience Steve!
@@samuelandaudrey Hi, folks. It was. Even standing several hundred yards away from the Riot that is Mascleta en Las Fallas de Valencia I had bits of tree bark and smashed fruit raining down on me.
Most stayed and endured it. Some fled and others were taken away by Ambulance....
The reason I find myself listening to and watching this particular video of yours is that I love Spanish food, and there`s not enough access to it in my part of Britain.
¡Felicitaciones por sus vídeos!
Una observación: Manteca es grasa de cerdo (lard), pero en Argentina le dicen manteca a la mantequilla (butter). Por eso Audrey lo tradujo así.
¡Sigan viajando y llevándonos!
¡Muchas gracias! Realmente apreciamos esa explicación. Nuestro plan es visitar Argentina este otoño.
I'm so hungry now... 😂
Wish we could share with you. We ate too much ;)
que grandes se la pasan viajando jaja
Gastamos mucho en viajes.
Que linda las chicas españolas
Gracias!
Hi Audrey! Headed to Europe and need a good pair of booties like yours in the video. May you please recommend a brand? 6 weeks until the trip and hoping to break them in!
Thanks Cristina! We've had good luck with Merrell products.
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos thank you for taking the time to reply! Love your videos. Much love from Boston ♥️♥️♥️
Nice video! A Quick tip: if you compress the polvorón before you open it, it will be a little bit more dense and won’t fall apart ;-)
Thanks for the tip!
How much $ do you allocate per month to travel?
Hi, is 14:01 - 14:03 Is all the food shown on the shelves produced in Spain?
I think most come from Spain
you have to press the polvorón slightly between your hands before unwrapping in order to make it more compact and not so crumbly
Thank you for that tip!
I really enjoy especially your food videos and reviews. But I have a question...why do you have duplicate playlists? I'm going through your playlists to catch up as I only just discovered your channel, but the duplicate playlists makes it a bit of a task to rummage through to find videos that I may have missed. Also, it would be great if you could do a 'watch from the beginning' playlist. Just some feedback :) keep up the great travels and videos
Thank you! We need to clean up our playlists for sure. We usually put videos in multiples ones if they cross-over in any way but that might make it more confusing.
What’s the cost of living like in Valencia ?
How are the beaches in Valencia? Thinking of making it as part of our honeymoon in August
For beaches maybe check out Alicante.
Not so keen on the sweet stuff, looked a little too sweet for my tastes but all the savouries looked fantastic and that lovely juice at the end a must for me. No wonder you were full though as that was a lot of food. I would have been happy with 2 of those "snacks". Or even just the tortilla on its own. I love a Spanish tortilla. Shame you didn't get some croquettes though. Mmm a lovely ham or spinach one is one of my favourite tapas.
Thanks! We definitely could have tried more savoury items. Next time for sure!
@@samuelandaudrey There is something about Spanish food that makes my mouth water. It just looks so good and I even get hungry watching videos.
You are lucky to have that market so close. I am eventually moving out there possibly the Valencian region but that place is definitely due a visit even if not too close. I would make a day of it :)
Spain is my dream place.. But i think i could never go there 😓😓😓
Hope you can someday!
@@samuelandaudrey thanksss.. Me too wish your words come true one day
That guy looked like my grandpa in 2019. Yeah, he’s like 87 years old now. Are you grandpa?
lol
Wow very cheap for 5 pound you will be very full. I'm difinitely going there
Grating voice. My God.
Palmera is not typical from Spain guys btw I'm Spanish and. I love your videos
Thank you! Our mistake with that. What would have been a more local things to try?
You find palmeras in every bakery in Valencia lol. but the street bakeries have better quality ones.. still not the best spanish sweet. Next time try coca de pasas y nueces or other specialities, one of the best bakeries, although there are many good ones is pasteleria Santa Catalina, next to the famous horchateria Santa Catalina.. lots of choice there! Also next time try "esgarraet" it is baked red peppers with salted cod, it is a typical valencian tapa. Nice video! I miss Valencia!! I now live in England
I am also Spanish and I can assure you that Palmeras are typically Spanish; perhaps in your area they are not common and that's why you think they are not from Spain. lol The origin however, like most food items, is not exact but some people claim it to be French (Palmiers) whilst others claim it to be older and part of the Spanish Arabic heritage as apparently puff pastry was brought to Europe via Spain by the Arabs. Believe who you want but bottom line, they are typical espanish. lol
The palm trees were brought to Spain a long time ago, but they are not endemic trees of the country. Except in the area of the city of Elche, are only decorative trees, there are no palm trees in the mountains naturally.
We are talking about palmeras the pastry not the tree...
The cheese will almost certainly be quesso manchago which is very popular sheeps milk cheese from La mancha which is a province near valencia.
Thanks for letting us know.
It looked more like emmental. Nobody cuts manchego in cubes like that.
👍👍😍😍
:)
i used to get overwhelmed by the bouqueria in barce, this looks much more dealable.
Thank you! We loved going daily.
Many people say Valencia is like Barcelona before becoming "touristified". I.m afraid it.ll be the same in a couple of years, we locals are already getting expelled from our barrios by tourism, just like Barcelona.
HI were did you stay, was it airbnb
Thanks David! An airbnb just across from the market. Great location to be nearby there. Prices in the market are for locals not tourists.
You should know that polvorones has to b eaten in a “special” way. You squeeze between your hands and it become compacted and easy to eat. Also, you always eat them with something to drink, liquor or ☕️.
Oh, thanks for those tips! They sure would go nice with something to drink :)
Si, los polvorones y mantecados suelen aplastarse con la mano antes de quitarles el papel. Así no se deshacen y es más cómodo comérselos. :)
how do you find all these places to eat. I live in europe & all i can see on the streets are overpriced boutique shops. i’ve been to almost all the places that you were & and always ended up eating @ mcdonalds or in supermarket. I like how you always state the prices too. This channel makes me appreciate my surroundings a bit more haha. but you seem to be really good at finding gems though.
Thank you! Some of it is researched and sometimes we just stumble across it. You're definitely right though in the sense it takes a bit of extra effort.
My god.. how can you travel to places like Valencia and end up in Mcdonalds???
Asun Montero surprisingly easy if you’re cheapskate by nature :)
Gasper Kosmac...Maybe next time.. ask the locals, go to to street bakeries or look for day menus in bars, or go to markets!
When will you be coming india ?
Just to point out they are still called empanadas in Spain if it is the bigger ones. And those sweets is best to squeeze it in your hands a trick my spanish fiancée taught me.
Wasn't the empanadildo a little dry without sauce?
Sauce would have been nice.
