  • Join us for Spanish breakfast in Granada, Spain as we review a number of traditional favorites such as Spanish omelettes (tortilla española), Spanish donuts with chocolate (churros con chocolate) and Spanish sandwiches with cured ham (bocadillo de jamón serrano). In addition to this we also ordered tea, coffee and cappuccino along with a slice of carrot cake. It turned into more of a large brunch than a breakfast by the end of the meal.
    Our final verdict is we loved our meal. The atmosphere in the cafe was really cool, the quality of everything was excellent and the price was reasonable. We'd highly recommend checking it out.

    Spanish Breakfast in Granada, Spain Travel Food Video Transcript:
    Good morning. It is a Saturday here in Granada. And not a creature is stirring. Not even a mouse. The plan for today is to go out for breakfast. We want to show you what a Spanish breakfast looks like. Yesterday while we were out in town Sam noticed a place (Via Colon). We're going to try and retrace our steps. There is a few good places so yeah we won't have any trouble finding one.
    Okay so Sam found a great little spot for us not too far from the apartment. This place is called ViaColon and it is a beautiful coffee house (cafe). Like it is classy inside. And prices are very reasonable I have to say. Yeah. It is competitive with some more rustic looking places. We ordered three different things. They have a menu for breakfast. You have like 5 different options. We've ordered 3 of them because we were feeling pretty hungry. We think we can tackle 3 breakfasts between the two of us.
    Okay we're going to start off with something sweet. That is the plan now guys.
    Going in for the churros. The churros dunk. In a hot chocolate. I just love the thickness of the chocolate. I just can't get over it. When have you seen hot chocolate so thick. And it is like dunking it in chocolate sauce. Sludge. Chocolate sludge.
    Okay now that we've had our sweet stuff let's move on to the savory. Oh yeah. And first up we have the tortilla which the best way to describe this would be like a potato and egg omelette. Yeah. It is about an inch thick. And yeah. I'd say this is a bit more of a generous portion than what I'm used to. Like they really give us a nice slab here.
    Time for me to go in for the Spanish Tortilla (tortilla española).
    Anyways uh it is very simple ingredients. Just potato and egg. Yeah. And it is thick. It is a lot denser than what it may look like.
    So the third item on the menu it was listed as bari which I haven't heard before because it is kind of like a toasted sandwich with Jamón serrano. Oh can you open that one more time. And on the other side. Oh. We've got the tomato. I didn't know it came with tomato. I couldn't even see that when I was first looking. I know.
    This is our first time having it with tomato. Yeah. Like usually when we ask for a bocadillo de jamón serrano. Like a sandwich. Yeah. It is just bread and ham.
    That was a glorious feast of feasts. It was already big enough breakfast but yeah I'm certainly full now.
    On to price point. It came to just under 19 Euros. that included 3 breakfast mains. Out of those breakfast mains the hot chocolate came with the churros (churros con chocolate). Your tea came with the sandwich right. I ordered an additional cappuccino.
    And then an additional slice of cake. That was a lot of food for 19 Euros. It really was. Great atmosphere in here. The quality of everything was good. I'd highly recommend coming here. What a great way to start the day.

    We are just back from our trip to Andalusia, including Granada. Due to your video (and also our Airbnb host recommendation), we had breakfast at Via Colon. I really wanted churros again (hubby not as much a fan) and I'd seen there was breakfast food. So I got my churros and hubby got more of an American breakfast with a lot of meat. It was fabulous, thanks!

That restaurant looked so inviting and the breakfast you ordered (churros con chocolate and tortilla espanola) so delicious that I simply had no option but to go there myself, My breakfast certainly lived up to expectations. I make my Spanish style ham sandwich the following way: a fine coat of mildly garlic flavored olive oil. Toast the bread en “la chapa”. Pile up the best jamon Serrano you can afford. Coat the side of the bread you are going to put a slice of tomato on with maionese ( the mayo prevents the bread from getting soggy). Use a good quality tomato and a slice of roasted red pepper. Enjoy it with a strong cup of black coffee or chimarron.

    When I was in university in Madrid, I would have my breakfast each day at a bar that was on the route to school. Each day it would be cafe con leche and fresh churros. At the same time nearly every days, 2 very well dressed men, lawyers or bankers I suspect, would be there for their breakfast. Very simple, they drank a Sol y Sombra. A combination of a large shot of anisette and another of cognac. On Mondays it would be a double!!

    • @carb10
      @carb10 Před 3 lety +2

      I definitely think there is room for eating churros and other bollocks because all food should be enjoyed. Not everyone could stomach tomatoes at breakfast and some people have a sweet tooth and could find churros very enjoyable first thing in the morning. I don't think it is necessary to follow convention just to enjoy food so in Italy I have no problem drinking cappuccino or latte after a meal when Italians say it is a no no and I have no problem drinking wine with my pizza when Italians say you should drink beer because I hate beer. Life is too short, embrace the bollocks and enjoy it if that's your thing. I know that I will continue to eat nothing else but churros for breakfast when I am in Andalusia.

    Ya nos gustaría a la mayoría de los españoles, poder ir a vuestros países y pegarnos una fiesta gastronómica en cualquier cafetería de cualquier pueblo, como la que os acabáis de dar aquí... Algo muy posible, e incluso normal, en toda España; además con tanta variedad de productos y sabores, como regiones y provincias existen, y usualmente con unos precios bastante asequibles.
    Porque, normalmente, cuando salimos al extranjero regresamos más delgados; y los que venís aquí, a la inversa, os vais casi siempre con algunos kilos de más.

      En primer lugar, las palabras "España" y "españoles" para dicho sujeto y la gente que le vota (yo desde luego que no, ¡nunca!) no existen: sería en todo caso "este país" y la "gente de este país".

    That is a very meagre portion of churros and the chocolate is diluted, it should be darker and richer than that. If you are going to be spending a day working out on the hillsides bringing in olives, you need something filling like that tortilla ; ketchup? NEVER!! unless you are a Philistine. Spreading your sandwich with tomato is way healthier than a load of fats (butter, margarine or even olive oil) and as you said gives a moisture which makes the bread part slide down easily. Most of us just have 'un café con leche y tostada (or media tostada)' that is 'a coffee and a half (or a whole if you prefer) toast' and a 'toast' is not just a measly slice of bread but maybe (depending on the establishment) a chapata cuadrada halved horizontally and the equivalent of a couple of slices of thick sliced bread for the media tostada or double that for a full tostada.
    19 Euros, that was expensive. Two breakfasts with extra coffee normally costs us 6.20€ but we aren't in a tourst trap like Granada.

  • @duVallonFecit
    @duVallonFecit Před 5 lety +3

    Unfortunately you are in a touristic bar (I know it, I live in Granada) and this is not an authentic spanish breakfast.
    No one in Spain eats Tortilla in the morning. In Spain the traditional breakfast (in a bar) is composed by squeezed orange juice, cofee or "colacao" (hot cocoa) and toasted bread (true bread) with olive oil, smeared tomato and salt, or the same with serrano ham or toasted bread with butter and marmalade (strawberry or peach), and other less popular options like toasted bread with paté, or ham with cheese, or sobrasada and cheese.
    Hot chocolate and churros use to be a "merienda" (half afternoon little meal) or a breakfast for special days and sundays.
    What you have eat in Granada are REAL churros, this thing made in Madrid is industrial and far of what original churros are. In fact the "porra" is the first part of the wheel of the churro (if you know how churros are made).
    Also carrot cake... is a modern trend and as a desert after lunch or for "merienda".
