  • It's Friday, so it's time for this week's 'Tea Reads' episode! In this video, I'm joined by my Mum (Donna), and we share our regular Friday routine of a teatime chat about books over tea and a sweet treat. In our 'Tea Reads' episodes, we'll be sharing great short reads that can be enjoyed in the time it takes to drink a cup of tea. In today's episode, we bake flapjacks on a snowy afternoon and then share some favourite reads by our kitchen fire.

I'm enjoying your videos so much in these recent weeks. They're such a calm and comforting start to the weekend. I love the feeling you give of a 'simple life', and I mean this in the best way possible. It's a life that enjoys the simple pleasures in life - like reading, baking , nature - and almost feels completely worry and trouble free. This is such a nice feeling to portray in these troubled times. But most of all, I love how much you and your mum laugh together, giggle really, it's such a joy watch.

Hi Donna and Miranda, so lovely to catch up with you both round such a cosy fire. A Winter Night by William Barnes that Donna read gave me shivers up my spine as it was so evocative of the feeling we had on our walk yesterday when my husband said I feel as if we are the only two left! Thank you for a delicious recipe, wonderful readings and, of course, your delightful company as always. Teresa 💖🔥🫖🍰📚❄️💖

I loved the description of the little jars of snowdrops in the bakers’ windows amidst the cakes and buns - perfect. Thank you to you and your Mum for such a relaxing video. C x

What a gentle and enjoyable start to the weekend. I love making flapjacks, sometimes i chop up dried apricots very small and add them , along with a spoonful or two of apricot jam.
When my boys were at primary school i used to help at Friday afternoon ‘Golden Hour’ when all the children were allowed to do a fun activity. My job was to make flapjacks with small groups of four children, and they all took turns measuring and stirring, then carefully wrapped up a few flapjacks to take home very proudly. I helped with Golden Hour for several years, and was known as ‘the flapjack lady’ by all the village children. X

I love the image of little Miranda not wanting to emerge from the Alps to view the desert. Your mum's titles are among my favorite of the year too. Fortnight, especially, continues to resonate. I was also tickled at her Georgette Heyer mention, as I'm currently enjoying it under its very non-Shakespearian title. As always, thank you for the heart-warming tea-time tranquility. It's alway a joy to watch you and your mum share laughs, memories and the joy of reading.

The snow is so beautiful. It reminds me of central New York State where I grew up. I smiled when you were reading about the tea portrayed in your book. My paternal grandmother was Scottish, and when I was little, quite often she would give me a snack of toast with butter and sugar on it and tea, mine with more milk and sugar than actual tea😊 I need to make myself that again sometime, only now the tea will not have the milk and sugar. Thank you both for a wonderful visit today.

Hello Miranda and Donna! Another very enjoyable episode. I laughed listening to your car trips as it brought back memories of my family’s road trips in the States and Europe growing up! The ‘20 books Donna mentioned I liked too. Also the extract from VW’s diaries was interesting having read SH. FWFS has a lovely Icelandic word that might be a good way to describe the snow you’re having: “hundslappadrifa’”! And I learned flapjacks mean something different on both sides of the pond! Stay warm and thank you xx ❄️👩‍🍳🫖📚🌱

I just read Claire Harman's biography of Charlotte Bronte (glorious), and I'll never forget this little detail about someone who saw Charlotte walking to the church on her wedding day; they compared the sight of her in her dress to "a snowdrop." I loved that, and I'll always think of Charlotte's wedding dress when I see those flowers now. 🌱🤍

I liked your mums choice of books that she enjoyed reading last year I agreed with her A Fortnight in September just such a lovely book it will be on my list for this September to read 😊 and Wind in the Willows I have been listening to on audible narrated by Allen Bennett I remember I think it was a BBC Radio original always a joy to return to. Although I am looking forward to spring I do like curling up by the wood burner book in hand and a cup tea while it is snowing and cold outside. The Wind In The Willows is my all time favourite audiobook; whilst I so love the book, I’ve listened to it on tape, then CD and now have it on Audible, I’ve introduced no end of people to it, it’s such a fabulous listen, I particularly like the dramatisation which includes Alan Bennet, bliss 😍😍

Looked so cosy cooking these! I have to confess i read the Christmas Party and really struggled and yet I love her Regency books, don't know why I just couldn't gel with story - Stephen seemed so obnoxious, he just seemed to exclaim all the time and was rude to everyone... the potential mother-in -law was drawn very well though and I did finish it :) A fortnight in September is a lovely read, charming and affectionate, def a favourite. Interesting. Here in the States, “flapjacks” is another word for pancakes, a thin batter cake that is pan fried and topped with various cultural favorites such as apple sauce, maple syrup, or even peanut butter AND maple syrup in my family. VERY different than yours.
