  • It's Friday, so it's time for this week's 'Tea Reads' episode! In this video, I'm joined by my Mum (Donna), and we share our regular Friday routine of a teatime chat about books over a cuppa and a sweet treat we've baked together. In today's episode, I'm excited to share a fabulous recipe for Treacle Bars, from the Towpath Cookbook, which the publishers have kindly allowed me to reproduce for you (see below). Mum and I also chat about books we've been enjoying this week. Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

I am sitting here in the sunporch at the end, hopefully, of a very cold central Pennsylvania winter. Your reads about early spring give me hope for warmer weather. I love your channel. Drinking tea with a good friend or mother and eating treacle bars and drinking tea is my idea of heaven.

The treacle bites looked amazing, it’s been nice enough here Buckinghamshire to sit out with a cup of tea, I suspect I’ll be up early in the morning to have some ready for mid afternoonses 🤣
I really enjoyed Blitz Spirit the other night, together with Chelsea Concerto, it’s stayed with me all week, which made your book choices today feel very apt and enjoyable. I’m definitely going to be buying English Climate, loved the story you read out!

Really enjoyed this, particularly the extract from Old Herbaceous. As a keen gardener myself, this is a wonderful time of year as the garden starts to come to life again. I too loved the Blitz Spirit programme, so interesting to hear about the experiences of the people who lived through it and I thought it was a nice touch to see their actual relatives at the end. Sorry to hear about your boiler woes! I feel your pain as the same thing happened to me the other year. We take hot water and heating for granted until we haven’t got it! Hope it’s fixed soon! Have a lovely weekend both.

Hello Miranda and Donna, apologies I'm late to tea this week but what a lovely treat now that I have been able to catch up. The Treacle Bars are definitely going to be made in this household! Thank you so much to you both and the Towpath Cookbook editors for sharing the recipe. I was so glad not only to see you had been able to get a copy of Reflections from a Garden but that you enjoyed it too. I also was very glad of your recommendation this week to read A Chelsea Concerto by Frances Faviell ahead of Lucy Worsley's excellent Blitz documentary. Both excellent and so moving. My own Mother was living in the East End before moving to Maple Durham with her Mother to get away from the bombing. My Mother hardly ever recalled the grim sights and experiences she was exposed to as a child but loved to recall anecdotes and I do miss her wonderful ability to hold us captive with her incredibly detailed memory and characterisation of people and events, how I wish I'd recorded them or written them down. We too have had a bit of a week and and so I really hope your week ahead is going to be full of Spring wonder and warmth! Thank you both, Teresa ❤️📚👩🏻‍🍳🔥❤️

I've been re-reading some of Beverley Nichols books; they always remind me of spring and getting back into the garden. His books would have also fit well with your previous vlog on humorous British books. Kind regards, Lynn

Kinsey who wrote the Lady Hardcastle mysteries has a new book coming out on March 1 called, "The Deadly Mystery of the Missing Diamonds". It seems to be part of a new series and a spin off? The treacle bars sound so good! I will be trying them soon. This weekend I've made serinakaker (Norwegian vanilla and almond festive biscuits) and vanilla and almond cupcakes with white chocolate frosting. Lots of almonds because I have a kilo bag of ground almonds in the cupboard which needs using up. I loved Donna's reading about the Secret Garden, and yours Miranda about the lady going off for the day when she thought her house might be bombed. Brilliant!

Here in the US, Golden Syrup is fairly easy to find (although the recipe uses A LOT of it), but double cream is virtually impossible in my grocery stores. I guess you can use heavy cream and add butter. I think that I’ll just enjoy watching you enjoy them!

Yum, these treacle bars look delicious - a perfect teatime indulgence or hearty picnic treat. Thanks to you and Towpath for sharing the recipe! A lovely selection of books, too. I'm slowly reading my way through the English Climate stories, my favourite so far is also 'From Above'. I must say I'm enjoying Sylvia Townsend Warner's short stories more than her novels, which I've found a bit difficult to get into. I know many other people who love them, though, and perhaps I should give them another go. A Chelsea Concerto sounds great and have added it to my list of Dean Street Press books that I'll be treating myself to, in the near future. In the meantime, I'm enjoying Slightly Foxed's To War with Whitaker, by the Countess of Ranfurly. A great wartime diary, some of it on the Home Front but most of it much further afield. Hope you're having a lovely weekend and enjoying some sunshine to make up for your lack of a boiler! 🧡
