  • Maintain the stock lead acid battery or just get a Lithium battery? I went with the lithium battery for many reasons but I will also show you how to take care of the stock lead acid battery too. thanks for watching!
    Update 1/1/2020: Almost 4 years, still no problems whatsoever with the lithium battery, the bike will start every single time with no issues. and I have never had to put on a tender or charge it. I let you know if it ever fails
    They no longer sell the BikeMaster Lithium Ion Battery (DLFP-7zf) that I put in my TW200. (there may be a new part number that does)
    Here are a few other similar ones that will fit the TW200:

    The vent hose is very important with a lead acid battery. Spilled acid can really do a number on your bike. It can and will corrode the paint and metal on your bike. Also, you should routinely check the water level in any lead acid battery. Unfortunately, you may need to remove the battery from the bike to see the water level. Be sure not to overfill the cells.

    • @TDubsKid

    Battery Tender brand tenders do not fully shut off even though they have an “automatic” shutoff. Still a decent trickle charger, but you really need to be on top of unplugging it once it’s charged. Noco Genius 1 tenders do fully shut off, so that’s a better option.

    Do you have any recommendations for an AGM non-spillable battery? My WR250R came with a yuasa YTZ7S for example. I’ve seen people using that on their TW’s but it has ~6AH versus ~7, so I am skeptical. I like the AGM Batteries because I have heard bad results from lithium. You had a great result with yours, but I think it’s a hit or miss thing with customers. Never stop making videos!!! 👍👍👍

    I use a battery tender on all 6 of my bikes. I also use lead acid batteries (SLA or AGM, not the kind you put water in) I won't use lithium batteries in anything. They have a penchant for catching fire. I'd hate to have my house burn down because a lithium battery caught fire.
    As far as it not starting immediately after sitting for a couple of weeks, wait a minute or so after turning the petcock on. Gas tends to evaporate out of the float bowl, and ethanol gas makes it a lot worse.
    I don't recommend the Shorai battery. I belong to one street bike forum, where one member got one, bragged about it so much that many other members started getting them. A short time later they all started failing. This may be the reason.
    "Shorai Batteries require a charging system output of 13.1 Volts or higher at idle, and must not exceed 15.2 volts at maximum output"
    No bike I've ever owned had any charging voltage at all at idle, in fact letting a bike idle for a long time will drain the battery, because the lights are running off the battery. The stator does not really put out much of anything much below 3000 rpm. But most bikes with a charging system that is working properly do put out around 14.2V at 3000 rpm and above. 15V or more would mean the regulator is not working. Nevertheless, lithium batteries tend to be very fragile. You can't charge them too fast, you can't charge them too slow, and you cannot discharge them too fast. Battery maintainers are not recommended for lithium batteries, because the circuitry in them cannot tell when the battery is fully charged.
    I don't think they even make those old school batteries with filler caps and overflow hoses anymore. Modern lead acid batteries are sealed. They last many years if you keep a maintainer on them. They can be damaged, but they are a lot tougher than lithium batteries.

    • @TDubsKid
      @TDubsKid  Před 2 lety

      Hey thanks for the info, still running this same lithium battery close to 4 years later, never had a single issue starts every single time. Never put it on a tender once. Everyone has different experiences it seems, My bike runs in the 14 volt range at idle, might be because I have an led headlight. Maybe thats the key,

    Wes, just curious why disconnecting the negative, not the positive terminal first is recommended?

    • @TDubsKid
      @TDubsKid  Před rokem +1

      Because the frame is ground and if you hit any metal with a wrench while removing positive, it will short possibly even welding your wrench or ratchet to the frame and could ruin the battery

      Adding a kick starter seems like a whole lot of work compared to just bump starting the bike if you need to.
      BTW: as someone who has spent a lot of time dealing with lead-acid batteries, you did a great job of accurately explaining some of the key challenges in using them. The bottom line is that once lead-acids have gone dead they will seldom recover well enough to be useful. This isn't an issue for lithiums. It is the main reason that I switched to a lithium battery on my XT, the other reason was the weight.

    If you're goign to use a Lead Acid battery stick with the sealed lead acid battery. The vented ones aren't worth the cost savings. Just the amount of corrosive gasses they vent will damage everything around it in the long run.

    Update 2/24/22 to one of my latest additions for anyone possibly interested is the new BikeMaster BMP7L-FP Lithium Ion battery with Smart Technology, 2 year warranty, 144 CA and the digital OBMS (Onboard Battery Management System). I've pulled bigger toys out of a box of Cracker Jacks.... 😝This battery is super light and a perfect replacement for your stock lead acid (20 lb.) battery.....😞 I paid about $100 for it on Ebay but it's well worth it, It does need a special Lithium Ion charger for it so I got the BikeMaster charger for $39, again on Ebay. One thing that sets this battery apart from the others out there, it comes with a lot of double sided foam to use to fill in the space to fit the TW's battery compartment, It's an awesome replacement and well worth the extra money... Hope this helps.

      @@TDubsKid Thank you so much for your channel and guidance. I bought a 2005 with 5k miles for $1800; runs good, still looks completely stock. Previous owner said he only changed out the carburetor. I ordered almost everything I need and plan to do it all when the parts come in: 1. new front brake pads, hose, fluid, 2. oil change with new o-rings and filter, 3. clean, lube (with gear oil), and properly tension chain, 4. new lithium battery, 5. clean the air filter with the two products you used in your video 6. properly adjust brake and clutch levers to recommended settings. 7. clean and apply ACF-50
      Other than that, I think I'd like a charging cable for my iphone to the handlebars and maybe a 47t rear sprocket. Lastly, I want to do a rattle-can paint job with a new vinyl seat wrap that I know will look good but that's later on.... Excited

    The existence of lithium batteries are driving down the price of led acid batteries. I can get a lead acid for 20 dollars as the lithium is 75 dollars. Not sure what to do here, but the lithium is like twice the CCAs. That lead acid for 20 is 55-CCA

    • @TDubsKid
      @TDubsKid  Před 6 lety

      the main reason I got a lithium is because I didn't want acid leaking out since my bike get's laid down often. and it's nice that it is much lighter and you don't have to put it on the tender. so far so good haven't had a single problem with it and it starts every time. also if your buying a lead acid battery online it most likely wont come with acid and you will have to fill and charge it yourself before it's usable. if you get it locally it should be good to go

      eBay item number: 192189784474 That's the one I found for 20, I almost jumped on it then thinking not sure 55 CCA will be enough. I just bought the bike today but had to add water and a charge to get it to start. I would be OK going up to 50 maybe for a lithium battery, I'll just keep watching for discounts
