Yes, Danny LaRue was a star long before Lily Savage, Dame Edna etc đ„° That's why it makes me giggle when Ru, or queens on his show, talk about drag originating in the US ballroom culture. Ru has made passing remarks about the fact that drag originated in Shakespearean times here in the UK but he never really delves into it on the show. It's cute that Ru thinks that he has single handedly brought drag to the masses, drag has been a form of entertainment for centuries but OK sis. đđ
A lot of people forget about Hinge and Brackett who were also huge stars on the music hall, then TV
He ran so drag could sprint
Drag was not to be talked about ru made it popular but people like danny and savage and Edna made it so it was classed as a talent
The ultimate Queen of drag 50s 60s 70s .
I was lucky enough to see him live in Blackpool. Here he is impersonating female pop stars of the 1960s - after the first one they were Sandie Shaw, Vicki Carr, Mary Hopkin & finally Shirley Bassey. I remember my mother when I was about 9 showing me him on TV doing Dusty Springfield & telling me that he was a man. When my father was working in London he used to go to his club. Danny used to be a choir boy at the Catholic church in Soho Square in London & he was a wonderful talent - more than just a drag queen. In later life he was swindled out of his fortune & had to go back to work to pay off his debts while being looked after by his dresser. .
The second act was a take off of Sandy Shaw who sang Puppet On A String. She was famous for not wearing shoes on stage.
Danny had lovely legs in real life as well. He owned a nightclub in Leicestershire and my ( now) ex and I went there to see him on more than one occasion.
Stratford Upon Avon called Walton Hall, which was a Stately Home the nightclub was in the 1960's Hanover Square
He did "adult" comedy as well, I saw him live and he was hilarious, He came long before Lily Savage and about the same time as Dame Edna I think they both started around the 1960's. His dresses used cost a fortune and he did have a great pair of legs to show off in those dresses.
I remmeber one where Danny said 'I know what you're thinking, "where does he put it?" Well I've been doing this so long, I just whistle and it goes away.
The RVP was, in it's day, highly prestigious in the UK. The show, in the presence of UK royalty, was held at the biggest London theatre, the Palladium, once a year. It was for charity and performers were invited to perform without payment by invitation only. Entertainers included famous American and European stars as well as Brits such as The Beatles.
Danny hated the term Drag and preferred the title of Female Impersonator, just before he starts to sing you can hear "Wotcha Mate" in a male voice, Danny would always say this at the start of his shows so as to let everyone know he was a man.
One job title he said he preferred was âcomic in a frock" which, I suppose, sums his career up rather well.
That's what the public found acceptable at a time when being Gay was illegal, and Trans was barely discussed...We live in much better times.
Danny did a week at the theatre I managed many years ago. The show was fantastic and he was very personable. A friend asked if I could get her and her French boyfriend seats for the show which I did. I saw them during the interval arguing in the bar. Apparently her boyfriend didn't believe it was a man in drag as "no man has legs as beautiful as that"!
Danny did everything singing acting dancing stand up and everything in between
He had a single called, 'On Mother Kelly's Doorstep', if I remember correctly.
Ah yes my friend paved the way for others especially on TV and yes Dan acted he had some TV films and one in the cinema and he did characterisation of manly friends he was known as a comic in a frock
yes he was the best
Norman Evens was brilliant Over the garden wall
Old Mother Riley was another
Danny did lots of work for the troops ENSA before he made the move to his rise to fame
If anyone's wondering - that's why the Doom Patrol character is called Danny the street. Danny 'La Rue'
You might enjoy these 2 Female Impersonators - YT vid 'Hinge & Bracket- Dr. Evadne Hinge & Dame Hilda Bracket'
The royal variety performance carries on to this day. It must be about 80 years old now. every year senior members of the royal family attends a star studded show for one night only usually televised and all money received goes to charity. The queen used to attend every year, but in her later years it went to Prince Charles and lately William and kate
It's actually over 100 now and on behalf of the EABF and the Queen hasn't attended every one, it's a senior member of the family and the late Majesty was Patron which has now gone across to King Charles
Another one you should watch is Stanley Baxter
Bloody hell I'd forgotten him? And he's still going.
Danny was brilliant no doubt !@
He played the part of Dolly in Hello Dolly in the West end.
Many societies prohibited women from performing in public.
In the ancient Greek theatre men played females, as they did in English Renaissance theatre and continue to do in Japanese kabuki theatre (see onnagata). In Chinese opera specialized male actors who play female roles (dĂ n) are referred to as nĂĄndĂ n
Ru Paul is waaayyyy late to the party.
Danny La Rue was a legend..
He had the best legs in the business. On this show Danny is parodying famous female entertainers of the time. Sandy Shaw always sang barefoot and represented the UK in the Eurovision song contest. Watch It Ain't Half Hot Mum. The series was based on entertaining the troops while serving abroad. There was a Royal Variety Show every year. Google them. Live at the Palladium is another one. Also, The Good Old Days is another TV show to see Danny and other great acts.
Hi Ashley. I think you can now see why I mentioned going to see Danny in London back in the 70s. Great fun. I am so glad you liked this.
He was fabulous.
If you like Danny La Rue, you should check out a friend of mine, Ceri Dupree, very famous in the U.K. and very funny. Love the channel and much respect.
U should watch Danny larue on a show called this is you life .
It's all about him
You may want to check out " old mother Riley, " and for a woman changing playing a little boy "The Crankys,"
First btw I am proud of you and I see you doing you. Side note Tank vs Garcia. I expect a knock back to the main topic. Wow is all I can say
Danny was born in Cork, Ireland
Royal Variety Show on every year
Danny la rue. Big star an Irishman born in co cork
I love Danny and often watch old recordings. Talented, funny and absolutely spot on but always identified as a man pretending to be a woman.
Because that's what drag is...Why are people making a point about that, like it's controversial? Rue Paul says exactly the same...There are drag artists who are also trans, and the vast majority like Danny are Gay,, but they are separate categories...
@@zivkovicable Danny himself made a point of it that's why and no-one is trying to claim it's controversial as far as I saw, unless new comments have appeared. If you watch him he says in his normal male voice "Watcha mates" so he is clearly saying, look here I am, a man impersonating women, now let's all have some fun. He was just particularly good at it. He got the mannerisms just right in a lot of cases. Another great impersonator and exponent of the craft was Joe Longthorne. Presented as a man impersonating women. Again, gay man in his private life. Very much loved and adored in a similar way to Danny. Compare these acts to say Larry Grayson, outwardly gay, flamboyant and funny and although rather effeminate in his behaviour he didn't impersonate women. Totally different craft and entertainment. People either liked him or they didn't.
@@kaydavis6752 i saw Danny do a turn at a private party in Soho performing to a mostly Gay audience and it was very different to how he played to straight audiences, or TV Danny. Much more transgressive, ruder and he bright the house down...Oh and he was referred to and referred to other drag Queens present as "she"....All in jest of course...It was a still a rime when this friendly joyous gathering could have been raided by the police, and drag artist had to watch their step in public, so anything that was said at that time to press and media was for wider public consumption, and not necessarily the same as private thoughts.
@@zivkovicable yes, I understand that some of his shows could be bluer than those for general public consumption. It's part of gauging the audience, another skill learned from treading the boards for years. I think there is an argument to suggest that we all hold our private thoughts in check to some degree, and modify our public behaviour. It's how we hold back society from falling into complete chaos don't you think? Imagine if we had the ability to read each others mind. We as a species wouldn't last five minutes. Makes me think that we are all performers, and life is but a stage. Where have I heard that before? Night night.
Not sure if youâve been advised. Google â Puppet On A String â. Sandie Shaw, Eurovision Song Contest. Love your videos. Just wish I could tell you all the subtle references. â„ïž
Try reacting to the real Shirley Bassey!
There is the Danny larue show
Impersonating Sandie Shore first, known for singing in bare feet.
He was a female impersonator he hated bean called drag . He always said I'm just a man in a dress
Of course there were pressures to distance himself from what was called transvestism, in the days that LGBTQ people were being arrested and beaten up by the police. At the peak of his fame he was breaking the law as a Gay man.
It goes go too Shakespeare's time when women could not preform and men would play the woman's role on stage. But Peter pan was played by a woman
Vesta tilley was a star around 1900 in london music hall. She dressed as a man. Check out stanley baxter. He was way better than la rue.
Na give me Lilly Savage back.
The time when drag artists had some class. Compare this to the current crop of tacky poseurs.
I remember the "good old days", when drag artists were beaten up walking between gigs....
Sorry Ashley but Paul O'Grady (Lily Savage) didn't like Danny Le Rue, in one of Paul's autobigoraphys he talks about when he met Danny, and lets just say they didn't get on
Wow đŻ I wonder if Danny felt threatened by Paul OâGrady
Really? That's not how I remember it
@@sandrabutler8483Re-read them, Paul O'Grady Open the Cage Murphy pages 301-302 Danny could be a mean drunk with a nasty tongue, then goes on to describe how Danny went of on a drunken rage
@@isabellajones-hyde9194 you're not telling me anything new, I was a close friend of Dan for 40+ years even we saw this side, we can all have times like this but he didn't hold a grudge and would apologise afterwards, I've not read Paul books just seen everything first hand
