It’s so crazy... I’m 55.. I love ALL music.. from Billy Joel - to Jay Z - to AC/DC to Carrie Underwood - Jackson Browne - Lady Gaga.. Bach... all of it. But NOBODY moves me the way Karen Carpenter does. Every time I hear her voice I cry. I cannot explain it.... she had the most pure and perfect voice; it stops me in my tracks. Simply incredible and unmatched.

Written by Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett and recorded a couple of times before The Carpenters covered it. Was originally supposed to be called "Groupie". About a girl who had a one night stand with her favorite musician. He told her he loved her. He moved on to play in another city. She can't get him out of her head. He isn't coming back. She is heartbroken and in denial and writes him a letter and thinks that it will convince him to come back soon, but he doesn't feel the same way. She is heartbroken and is starting to realize that she is only fooling herself, and she probably will never see him again. A real tearjerker of a song, and a tremendous vocal performance. If you only had one song to prove that Karen Carpenter is the G.O.A.T., then this would be it!

The depth and richness of her vocal still makes me tear up, and I’ve heard this song a billion times.... one of my favorite songs. Interesting background to the song, and you picked up on it. Originally written by Leon Russell, and Bonnie Bramlett, released as “Groupie(Superstar)”, the Delaney & Bonnie version, is very soulful, and from the perspective of an experienced woman. The Carpenters version changed the line “ I can hardly wait to sleep with you again”, to “be with you again”. Rita Coolidge also does a lovely version. That’s exactly what the song is about! Nice interpretation!
Her brother Richard (on keys) was the musician of the family originally and Karen tagged along, only playing drums in his jazz trio at first when she was 16.
Like most, he was shopping around for a record deal but they weren’t interested in instrumentalists and wanted vocal groups. After throwing something together quickly THAT VOICE just came out after being hidden for so long. Can you imagine?
She did not enjoy being the center of attention at first, especially as they took her from behind the drums and she was standing out front. She always thought of herself as drummer first, singer 2nd.
Check out the videos on here of her tearing it up in her drum solos! Amazing 😻

Great reaction! Yes, her voice has an incredible depth quality to it. Rainy days and Mondays never really bother me, until Karen sings about them. She takes me on the ride with her, when she sings

Have yourself a merry little christmas-- the carpenters version with Karen's lead vocal is absolutely best version and a stunning pop performance. Have seen it reduce a grown man to tears of emotion.

Karen Carpenter is probably the most amazing, naturally-gifted vocalist I've ever personally heard. And she knew how to use her gift to give you wonderful chills on many levels. Love her and miss her. Gone at 32. Imagine the body of work she could've amassed by now, yet still, she left behind MANY beautiful songs!

You are spot on about Karen's voice. I've often described her voice as hauntingly beautiful. All of the Carpenters fans will know what you meant when you said that. In fact, here's one definition of the word that I looked up in the dictionary.
    haunting:
1 - remaining in the consciousness; not quickly forgotten: haunting music; haunting memories.

She didn't just know how to sing; she knew how to SAAANG. According to Lionel Richie, there's a difference between singing and saaaanging.

Love this Song... Karen is amazing, and Yes her tone is Haunting.... I love to listen to her version and then to Luther Vandross Version of superstar... Both are Great, but they almost sound like totally different Songs.... That is what the greats can do to a Melody and Lyrics... LOVE THE VLOG!

She suffered for years from anorexia, which is what led to other health issues, & ultimately killed her. She put a face to eating disorders, during the 70's there was no word for it, after her death, it brought it to the forefront & I'm sure helped others.. She sounded just like what she was, an angel ❤️

OMG I have goosebumps when she sings any song, I always search for my fave voices story, about her, she was put aside back in 70s, she was a woman, (and look what happens with Tina Turner) another story her mom's was more kinda of her brother, she feel it, maybe a rejection, I don't know, seems like she try to get attention, no internet, black and white tv, her brother is such cool guy, but I think some people, mostly needs to aprove from parents, mom or dad, but based my reading, her brother loves her 'til the moon, another voice who's gone, guys I read that he never sing again after her passed away, sad story, but she was just so lovely, and thank you for bring this video, loved your reaction girl ❤️💋

Aww great song great reaction. Carpenters were a brother sister duo. Richard wrote most their songs was a great backup singer, and was an incredible musician. Karen had the voice of an angel and could play a mean drum. A VERY good drummer. She liked doing that better then singing. Her brother coaxed her from behind the drums when he heard her voice and she was never truly comfortable. She was taken from us much to young dying of anorexia. Her death brought much attention to the eating disorder. RIP Karen. Now you truly sing with the angels 👼👼

There are those that feel that some of her songs were a reflection of what was happening in her life thus adding an emotive depth to her singing. That "haunting" quality drew many to her voice. A voice so beautiful and distinctive that we will never hear the like again.
