    I remember kids in school only had these two decks (Yugi and Kaiba). When Pegasus' deck came around, it really changed things. "What do you mean your toon monster can just attack me directly?" I remember being in the toy store with my older cousins and they were already a bit into yugioh. I was 7 years old and wanted to get the Yugi Starter Deck because it had Dark Magician, and I also suspected it might have other of Yugi's cards like Spellbinding Circle and stuff. Also Yugi always beat Kaiba in the anime, so how could I go wrong? But my cousin urged me to pick Kaiba, since he said that it has a really strong card in it. I was like "what, Blue-Eyes?" I never really liked the design of Blue-Eyes, even though it had 3000 ATK, I really just thought Dark Magician was cooler. But he was like "no, because of this genie card, it has 1800 ATK and 4 stars, so you can just summon it whenever you want." I didn't get what he was talking about so I just ignored him and bought the Yugi starter deck. Later when we dueled and he taught me the rules, not only did I realize that the deck didn't have all of Yugi's cool cards, but also that he was right, and La-Jinn was a card I couldn't get over unless I used equip cards or was able to get out Summoned Skull. I think that's the day I really fell in love with Yugioh, because I realized the game was so different from the show, and that the even though the characters in the show get into dangerous situations surmised by the plot itself, you could find yourself in "dangerous situations" within the game, if you didn't have a strategy going in, which as a kid, I thought that was really cool. After that, for my birthday, my cousin bought me three Kaiba Starter decks. I remember he gave me 1, which I was ecstatic about, then unveiled 2 more, which blew my mind. I took my new cards into 2nd grade and destroyed the entire playground thanks to my cousin. And that's when I REALLY fell in love with Yugioh.

    I think the problem with the Levels being weird with under powered Level 5 monsters is that a lot of these cards and their stats are taken straight out of the manga, and in the manga, especially the early manga, the Levels meant almost nothing. There weren't Tribute Summons, so any card could be played at any time regardless of Level. They almost acted more as an indicator of rarity in the manga than being a better card since it cost nothing more to play. That's why Blue-Eyes is this amazingly rare Level 8 monster. Everything else is a Level 7 or lower. That's why Dark Magician is a higher Level than Summoned Skull despite them both having 2500 ATK. Dark Magician was more important. Sure, it also had higher DEF, but being Yugi's key monster meant more.
    Levels mean more now, not only because mechanics were introduced that make use of them, but because Konami has by now established some general guidelines as far as balancing how much ATK and how many effects go on certain levels. Frankly I think the Level balancing needs to be even more balanced, as power creep keeps messing with that balance, however at least now Levels actually mean something.
    Early Yu-Gi-Oh being more a promotional tie-in than an actually competitive game was a bit arbitrary as far as stats go.

    • @Noobie2k7
      @Noobie2k7 Před 2 měsíci

      I mean wasn't Duel Monsters originally just a spin off of what the original Yu-Gi-Oh manga/anime was. Since it at first didn't have anything to do with a card game and was juat about the Pharoah possessing Yugi and murdering people in various sadistic shadow games. Then in the second season of that show they all get trapped in a Fantasy Land where the monsters of the Duel Monsters game were real. Then they made the spin off manga Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Monsters that ended up being way more popular so they just continued with that.

    For anyone curious about the hitasume giant format. The first set in OCGland released volume one which was a fifty card set prior to any starter decks or legend of blue eyes that we had in the states. There highest stat of the non tribute monsters were 1200, hitasume giant, mammoth graveyard, and silver fang. The next highest attack was 800. Giant having the guest defense, made it the best monster in the game for roughly the first month of the sets release. Within two months however, it was power crept by trials of nightmare-1300 attack, followed by Celtic guardian-1400 attack, and quickly followed by uraby-1500 attack in subsequent sets, promos, or movie releases.

      While that is true, it is not entirely accurate. That poster failed to take into account a very important thing; Tribute Summoning didn't exist during the first three months of the OCG. That's why the strongest and most sought-after "meta" cards at the time were Dark Magician and Gaia the Fierce Knight, since they can be summoned straight from the hand at no cost (and then they were quickly powercrept by Blue-Eyes White Dragon, released one month after Vol. 1). However, since those cards were Ultra Rare while the 1200 ATKers were Common, it's still true that the 1200 ATKers were widely used back then as the most accessible big beatsticks in decks after the Ultra Rares.

  • @platypusfox73

    Most of the card choices largely came down to what Kaiba was playing in the anime and Manga at the time. For example Kabia played la gin against yugi in that blue eyes Ultimate dragon duel. Then in the following duel against pegasus a few episodes later he opened the game with Rude Kaiser. This was also back during the duelist kingdom days where they were just playing monsters without having to tribute summon them.

    • @duelponzac
      @duelponzac Před 5 lety +3

      maybe the whole idea was to not bring the tribute summon rule at all - they only brought that up during the battle city ark wich took some time; otherwise, those 1-3, 5 and 7 stars slots would be kinda useless, or, at least, messed up (we could just have a 5* -> 1 tribute; 6* -> 2 tributes and so on, but neh, too simple for our card game XD). i can only think of a few situations in wich having those specific cards may actualy be worth it like when you have catapult turtle (5*) and a legendary ocend (field spell card that reduces certain monsters in your hand by 1*) so you can play the monster w/o tributing. all in all, i kinda have to thank the tribute summoning rule, i hated the yu gi oh forbidden memory deck style where you could just play 4500atk monsters with no problem.

      Yeah, old days of Magic are gone. Now everything's super expensive because the game is just so huge. Kind of nice to have Yugioh relatively small in comparison to Pokemon and MTG - card prices are cheaper. the wicked worm beast is actually a really cool tech in 2002 format, since aside from trap hole, every removal card is a normal spell, and you don't really want to commit to the board until both dark hole and raigeki have been dropped since you want adventageous trades, so it lets you put some offensive pressure on the board during your turn without actually risking a disadvantageous wrath
    it's also a last will target which is relevant if you play the card (mostly as a trap hole followup or in tribute decks)
    so yeah it really was much better than it actually seemed

    About Hitotsu me Giant: it was the highest ATK monster, along with Mammoth Graveyard and Beast Fang. The meta was pretty much "spam Dark Holes and Fissure (both at 3 copies), stop the opponent 1200s with Trap Holes, and boost your 800s ATKs with 300 ATK Equips (yeah, you read that right)".
    Shortly after there was a few other 1200 ATK (The 13th Grave for example), and Trial of Nightmare as an ultra from Shonen Jump if I remember correctly?
    Aqua Madoor was in the Theatrical Release version of the Starter Deck. You had to go through any Aqua Madoor your opponent was lucky enough to have, making Dark Hole and Fissure even more important.
    Shortly after that, it was "whoever was at the DM1 tourney or has enough money is going to plow through the opponent with Kanan the Swordmistress". Yep, a bit like Mechanicalchaser here.
    Then Celtic Guardian was released (as a pre-order promo I believe?).
    Then Uraby was released with its 1500 ATK.
    Feel free to correct me, I haven't looked into this for quite some time.

    I really like your pack openings and videos of the same ilk, even though I hate other people's pack opening videos. It's not lower quality content to me, despite the fact that you might think so. Your insight into all the cards that you pull really makes these videos special to me, and I really forward to watching you open packs and talk about the history of the cards or related cards, what the future of these cards might be, why certain cards are good or bad, your perspective on how hard certain cards are to pull from a box or just get in general, and everything else in between. Even this Deck opening, full of cards that everyone knows and everyone had back in the day, taught me a few things I didn't know about the history of the game as well as your history with certain cards.
    If anything, I'd suggest doing MORE of this type of video, with this sort of educational mindset in the forefront of your brain, rather than just being a side effect of you, being the analytical person you are, doing these types of videos. I think you'll feel better doing these types of videos when you realize just how much you have to offer talking about things like this.

    Enjoy all of your videos, including pack openings. I’d like to see some of your old deck profiles and how you go about building a deck. Trying to update mine a bit so my wife and I can play each other casually.

    Geez, I remember my uncle bought me 3x of each Yugi and Kaiba starter so I could make decks with full playsets of the best cards from each. And I remember my uncle played too and playmats lamonated to a folding peice of foamcore, I remember thinking that was the coolest thing ever.

    I remember going to my nearest Kmart to buy the Kaiba and Yugi starter decks. My uncle taught me how to play and gave me a whole shoe box of cards to strengthen the decks. I went on to buy a small red case that came with the Ancient Gear structure deck, and the rest is history.

    This is incredibly nostalgic for me. This deck and the yugi starter deck are the first two decks I bought when I started right around the time when metal raiders came out. Man I was so bad at deck building back then. We didn’t have a maximum deck size and I just smashed the two decks together. Also back then dragon capture jar was a huge annoyance for a great many players and I abused the crap out of it

    This was my first deck and I had a blast with yugioh. Made a lot of good friends and memories along the way thanks to this game. I really appreciate the game because it allowed me to be creative and more social. Unfortunately, some degenerate stole my Kaiba deck. I’m seriously thinking of buying this deck just to have it again for the memories.

    My very first deck was the Joey starter deck, a week before I finished my primary school my step dad promised to get me a deck once I finished my school exams he would give me a deck as a present and he gave me my first booster back as a tease, a week later I got my Joey deck and fell in love with it, Red Eyes is still one of my favourite monsters today.
