Back when I played MTG I remember hearing that you could play with proxy cards if you had the actual cards on your person to show that you did in fact own the cards. The reason was so you could play with super expensive cards but not have to risk damaging them. I thought that this made sense. If I have a $200 card, I don't wanna not use it in a tournament simply because I'm worried about it being damaged and losing value
I think Yugioh used to have a rule like that.
I know when I was a kid, people would use Orica cards (fake cards with different artwork, usually to look more like the show), but they’d have to have the real card with them
Same for cards in other languages. You just had to have the English card with you to reference for other people
That might’ve just been my locals though
Plastic case is a couple bucks bro. If it's that valuable you'd guard it well
*Sees thumbnail* can't play morphtronics at a tournament? I know they suck but you don't have to be that harsh
Lol same
So I know this is like a super old comment but I was doing some looking and honestly Morphtronics could probably be decent as a rogue deck. Am I missing something?
KT Ciller morphtronics are low key underrated. I used to play them back in the day when dueling network was live and I was able to place top 100 out of the 4000 some ranked players running morphtronic OTK and sometimes I’d like to play morphtronic shooting star quasar.
If I cant have my phone face-up on the field can I set it?
Only if you clearly write TOKEN on it with a sharpie.
As long as they don't have nobleman of crossout
Imagine your opponent stabs your face-down phone with a fucking sword or dagger then hurls it out of the event. "It has been removed from play!"
Now all you can do is hope his cell phone is also the same kind so you can return the favor.
Just load up a jpg of a card as the BG and claim it's a proxy!

As long as you have “burial from a different dimension” to put it in your grave then use

I never understood the topdeck thing. Like say you look at the top card to see if you should scoop and see you ARE going to draw sphere mode. Now you DON’T scoop? Now I’m supposed to let you continue the duel with knowledge of your next draw? How can you even attempt to believe that isn’t bs?
Not to mention that if you're getting tilted about the combo half way through and are thinking of scooping, why not just wait the extra minute to see if you just scoop on your draw phase? It drives me crazy, along with the people who have to keep shuffling their cards in their hand constantly. I get that if you reorganize your cards in your hand you might see something differently or whatever, but CONSTANTLY moving them without even looking at them is obnoxious.
@@BeauxPhades b
Nervous/bored during your turn so they shuffle
@@BeauxPhades I think that Shuffling could make sense. Like you have a bad card on your hand and can't get rid of but you want to. You don't want your opponent to know which card it is in case he activates an effect which allowes him to destroy a card in your hand or something like that.
Just something I could think of.
@@TN-vm9db If you think this turn is do or die you may expend more resources to survive the turn but if you look at your top card and see you're going to draw an out you can just keep all your resources & hand traps because you know you can out the board without them.
@@TN-vm9db if you know you can't win and you scoop, you now have several extra minutes on the clock to be able to win the next game and potentially win game 3 without going into time, and while that seems fair, it's also taking an opportunity away from your opponent. I don't agree with the logic, but I also don't think you should ever be allowed to know what your next card is. What you SHOULD do is think about what singular card could get you out of your current situation a la sphere mode or a kaiju. If your deck doesn't have an out, absolutely, you should scoop. If your deck has one or two cards that can out their board, it's your choice to play it out or not. If you have a draw spell you could get, well, then we just get into another thought process entirely. If you have confidence in your deck and your ability as a duelist, and you think you have a way to win, you probably should play it out. Either way, it's your choice.

"Commentators don't understand how MST negates"
yeah i always negate monster effects with mst lol
(not realy)
that's actually how I learned that mst doesn't negate. I went to a small local when I was like 10 and tried to mst negate. I was also playing 54 or so cards and a lot of other not great stuff. I'm now consistently top 8ing at my locals, so I guess I fixed things a little bit at least.
it can negate that new blue eyes spell tho
As long as the spell/trap that gets activated is a continuous spell/trap than MST technically negates because a continuous spell/trap has to be face up on the field to activate and resolve it's effect

I remember this 1 particular friend who would proxy entire decks to learn the deck before dropping money on them. (I mean real nice color photo copies and everything everytime.) I was running a casual tournament at our library that he came to. He had lost the deck he was using and asked if he could use a fortune lady deck with some proxies. I reluctantly agreed and after the tournament wouldn't you know it right after the tournament his completed deck was found. I dismissed it until I found out some of his proxies were just cards he made up... tl;dr people cheat and the rules are there for a reason.

So question about the deck box point, if a player has a duel deck box, one with 2 slots, is that also against the rules?
Correct

@@Dzeeff When it comes to that "no extraneous cards in deck box" ruling combined with the no-proxy ruling, would it be fine to have something like cards from an entirely different TCG (like magic lands or pokemon energies) as tokens in your box? I have a question DZeeff: can you use those officially licensed double deck boxes at official tournaments? Or just stick with a single deck box?
Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments are some of the most fun I've had fr. That was back in 06-07 so IDK about recently, but every one I went to was a great time with an awesome energy and just genuinely good people that all really loved the game.
One I learned recently that I’m not sure I agree with is, you can’t write down information from your opponent’s hand or deck if you get to see them by a card effect of some kind. I don’t really play competitive YhGiOh but I do play MTG competitively where this is perfectly fine and common. Could someone explain why this is a big deal in YuGiOh?
It promoted slow play when it was allowed
dzeeff I can see how that makes sense, but that still doesn’t really distinguish between different games to me. Couldn’t it promote slow play in any game? Or is this more of an issue of the community? I guess what I’m trying to get at is, what uniquely makes it a problem in YuGiOh? I hope this confusion doesn’t make me seem ridiculous or come off being dumb. Just trying to understand a bit better.
I'm not well versed with Magic, but moreso than any other card game I've played slow play is most prominent in Yugioh
Yugioh is compared to MTG very very fast. Killing your opponent in the very first turn or losing before you had a turn is very more common in Yugioh. This year its exceptional extreme in that matter. You have in a tournament only 40 minutes for the entire match. So writing for 2-3 minutes in the entire Match is a huge deal.
WiR WiR that’s always made me think knowing your opponents hand means less though knowing that the games don’t last very long. Where as having information allows you to plan for several turns ahead in MTG.
🥴 Me using the McDonald's Yugioh cards from the Happy Meal.

I went to my first YCS in london last month, was great experience! Played thunder dragon dino, went 5-3, and met Sam and Farfa.
Never heard of the thing about looking at the bottom card for who goes first.
My first tournament was the London YCS and my opponents were nice enough to correct me on the "not having other cards in your box" rule, as opposed to sharking me for a game loss.
Only time i look at the top card of my deck is when i lose. Just to think “what could’ve been” lol

Nice to see the "commenters don't understand tournaments" video.
Haven't attended my first local or any other sort of tournament but still good to know rules
I went to a local card tourney once I was eliminated pretty quick, and started playing casual games with some of the other eliminated players, and I decided to (with permission of the other player) show them my blaze cannon reload deck concept which did use proxies, and some kid came up and tried to get me in trouble for using proxies. Once it was established that it was a) not a tournament duel and the deck I had used for the tournament was completely legal, and b) both players looked into the proxied cards to ensure accuracy and allowed the use of the cards in a casual duel, the whole thing was dropped. The player to whom I'd shown the deck to was actually super interested, as he hadn't heard of the that deck type yet, despite his having destroyed me in the tournament using a constellar knight deck, I think? Fun times.
Number 1 you can't steal people's cards some people at ycs Pasadena forgot that
"Dont use proxies"
*me who just bought proxies earlier this day
dzeeff you should do a video of the top 5 things that should be a rule for competitive yugioh players. Basic hygiene practices, bragging about their scores on yugioh pro, getting angry if you ask a question about a card you don’t fully understand because they now have to take time out of their day to “explain” something, finding newer players who don’t know much, find their best cards they have pulled from packs and trade them way under value knowing they can get away with it. Now mind you, these aren’t ALL competitive players, but a decent amount of the bunch. Would just be interesting
Lmao I thought not allowed to use proxies would be common knowledge. Theres always that one scrub who asks if he can proxy a playset of ash blossom, as well as raigeki and monster reborn though
What if your opponent takes your card and throws it into the sea in the middle of the tournament?
@DEZEEFF I’ve dueled against someone using proxy’s and even though I knew it’s not allowed I wasn’t sure if I should call them on it because I didn’t want people to think I’m just a shark and doing it cuz I was gonna lose. Locals are more just for fun for me as I play casually but i still feel like we should be playing under the same rules.
Well at my locals proxies are allowed. I mean not an entire proxy deck but like 3 proxies are ok and it must be an important combo piece.
can i bring the skeleton of marcus aurelius to duel for me using my skull servant deck
yes
Just wondering, how do you prove to the judge that they looked at the top card of their deck? Would be nice to know if the issue is as common as you make it seem.
I actually had gotten a game loss for having entry packs in my deck box at YCS Seattle 3 years ago and it was devastating because it costed me the match and was why I didn’t make it to day 2. I wasn’t aware of that fact but I do appreciate this video being spread because there is a lot of things that people don’t tell their friends because they believe it is basic knowledge when bringing them to locals or big time events
Good to know, just got yugi and kaiba starter decks and I'm going to use them to dominate at locals, I even got exodia in the yugi deck!
So what you’re saying is that I can’t rip my opponents cards to automatically win?! Wow Yu-Gi-Oh has gone down the drain
can i have other decks in my back pack at regional because when me and my friends go after matches we like to play older decks like goat format, dark armed return, or dragon rulers.
Here in Poland I remember that if you were using other catds as tokens you ideally should write it on the card with a marker. I recall that one judge warned that if you have unlisted cards in your deckbox during a deckcheck he can use a permanent marker on those for or you're disqualified, you choice.
Work at a brewery and I showed up intoxicated once to a Yugioh tournament & got 2nd Place lmaooo😭🍺
That's lovely. Your mom must be proud.
How does one find out about things like locals? I'm sure there are communities and such online, but any insight besides just "Google Yugioh tournaments near me"?
There's a tournament store locator on the official Yugioh site, but that one only covers official stores. When I travel I usually just Google "yugioh tournament City Name" and see what comes up
Go on Duelingbook. They have the "tournament locater." Just google the places it lists until you find somewhere you want to go.
Honestly just look up card shops or comic book stores in your area. Just go in and ask. Usually what I do.
Look for shops selling TCG cards, or use search terms such as your town, and "yugioh turnament". This is how I found my shop/community. o.o
Some of the things I hear about going on at Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments seems super mind blowing. Mainly play magic and I can't imagine somebody looking at the top card of their deck in a high level setting unless they're a very young child who doesn't know better. Tournament dq or match dq if the judge is feeling especially lazy that day
Mtg makes a slight adjustment for the proxy rule if you can show you have sufficient real cards in say a safe storage ie collector binder or top loaders. You can use the proxies.
"They just roll a dice or two die" 4:50
This is top tier troll
As an English major I always get great fun out of misusing die and dice just to mess with people
Something I think is important to include is take backs.
Newer players are always the ones who try to take moves backs or change what they searched after theyve already done something after or if they get mirror forced stuff like that.
That kind of thing is fine for testing when youre learning to play around certain cards sometimes but its considered cheating as obviously neither player has all the information at any one time and must read all the cards in play. Itd be completely insane for takebacks to be allowed at events.
tbh.. the only Takebacks that need to be allowed are ones that require you to search something from your deck.. you most likely wont remember all the cards you havent yet played and if a Card requires you to search a Certain card and that card isnt in your deck anymore... you technicly could not activate thec ard and thus you never activated it as far as the game is concernd and you would go back before that card was played
quick question, are there any regulation about extra deck sleeves? me and a bunch of friends like to use a different sleeve for each extra deck card to make summoning and separating your extra deck from your GY faster and smoother
"You can't have a phone on the table face-up" That line was so funny for some reason 🤣🤣🤣
Why would bottom deck peeking to decide order ever be a valid strategy?
First of it's biased based on which cards you have. Sure it's impossible to build a good deck from the 'a' list but you would always be able to decide turn order.
And it reveals information so if your best card is at the bottom it cannot be drawn unless you had to reshuffle or it is searched. Both players know that and can then play with that information in mind right up until you need to reshuffle.
Knowing what kind of deck your opponent is playing is way too much of an advantage, and keep in mind that this happens before you even know who's going first. If I see a Mekk Knight at the bottom of their deck and I get to decide who's going first or second, I'd make that player go first every single time. Or if I see a Burning Abyss monster, I'm going to make an Abyss Dweller.
It is a fun casual thing to do. When my friends and I duel using table 500 decks we like to check the bottom card. Not at tournaments though.
Pro tip: Don't try to beat Earthbound Immortals with Penguins
We use dice roll or coin flip
@dzeeff So I'm planning on trying to go to a local tournament soon, and want to make sure my deck is up to snuff for a local as it will be my first tournament ever, do you have any suggestions for certain decks I should watch out for or certain strategies that tend to win locals a lot? Or should I go over my deck again and make sure I'm not playing any questionable cards?
My deck that's tournament ready is a weird hybrid of DM and BLS that uses a lot of the rank 4 toolbox outside of a couple cards that I don't have yet, and it balances out a lot of the light to dark ratio with the extra deck(only reason I'm not running rod for my build is because it's only level 3, and the only level 3 I run is Marshmallon to help stall(and the one I put in there is secret rare).
It's a powerful deck once it gets running, and a lot of the consistency issues have been fixed with a lot of the new DM support(but I still side deck a time wizard and dark sage because worst case I set up my grave for BLS, and best case I get a Dark Sage and search any spell card from my deck and raigeki my opponent for free). It's actually satisfying to play and seems to work almost perfectly except for maybe 1-3 in ten games.
The original version of that deck relied heavily on summoner monk(which it does rely on it to get the XYZs out, and even if they are stopped, graveyard setup, it's pretty great) also a card I hadn't heard of until I pulled it, Milla the Temporal Magician, which is a lv4 light spellcaster monster that allows you to look at a set card your opponent controls, and your opponent can't activate cards or effects in response. I'm surprised it hasn't been seen that much or even talked about that much competitively, because information is great.
Also, what about official proxies, ie older versions of cards that got an errata that are official yugioh cards but you have had a hard time finding a play set with the new effects? Is that okay or is it against the rules? Like I have 2 Witch of the Black Forest with the errata'd effect, but I have 1 with the original effect, could I theoretically use the 1 with the original effect as a proxy for one with the errata'd effect?
I love how all the chapters are just all the card names in all caps *SOLEMN JUDGEMENT*
Playing mtg with my friend:
Me: "Hey can I use proxies for this playset of cards? (Liliana, the Last Hope)
Him: "No."
*Spends 120 on singles*
Motherfucker has his own Liliana Proxies
4:40 "It's against the rules"
Screw the rules I have green hair :D!
For the choosing who goes first or second. There are 3 cards in Magic the Gathering for Rock Paper Scissor which I find a fun way to choose who goes first I bought 2 copies of each for that reason
I just took the judge test. There's been a change since this video came out, about phones. YGO/Konami has a specific YuGiOh life point calculator/app. You ARE allowed to use this to assist with calculations. You still must keep track on paper, but you ARE allowed to use this app (and ONLY this app) on your phone at the table during a match.
You can find this on this PDF: img.yugioh-card.com/en/gameplay/penalty_guide/YGOTCG_Policy_v_2_1.pdf
On page 17, section E about Neuron.
Things you can't do at tournaments:
Be a commenter and understand
0:40 I show up high all the time
Carlos Corona same lol not to tournaments as it impairs playing but for fun hell yea😂
World me well once you get your invite
I can only play this stoned as fuck
The artwork is so nice baked like a cupcake...wake bake , now "it's time to dddddddd.. dude did you see my post I shared about the iguana in Alaska?
Question: can you write "token" on a piece of tape and stick it on the card, or do you have to write "token" directly on the card?
Question, would you recomend Amazon for buying cards in order to build a deck?
Reson for my question is becaus I live in Sweden and want to build a masked hero deck, but most cards I need cant be found here as unopend packs.
