- Azama will always be pretty good no matter what you choose to do with him thanks to his incredible stats, but that doesn't mean he's always worth using. Tsunny is joining me today to look at all of Azama's options and the tradeoffs that comes with them.

Azama feels like an excellent example of gameplay/story integration; He’s a monk that you feel like shouldn’t be a monk

8:29 "I feel like the worst thing about Mitama is that she's a woman" I had this playing in the background as I was playing through birthright and hearing that completely caught me off guard lmao
Azama is the one unit that always gets me to fudge the “no online” rule. Dread fighter azama just goes so hard.
I don't usually count Dread Fighter/ Dark Falcon as online. When I play that means no Visiting castles and no Visit/Battle bonuses. However I play no Stat boosters/ pair up as well so the boots and Dragon herbs are still off limits for me.
It's a birthright unit anyways, casual campaign, the only campaign where "no online" counts is on conquest since that is actually a game
@@waddledottz Birthright is also a game? It just requires you to put more restrictions on yourself to up the difficulty. Which is why I do no online, Pair Up, or Stat Boosters. Plus occasionally ban certain OP units.
@@waddledottzAnd yet your goofy ass clicked onto an hour long video about a unit from a casual non-game. Make it make sense.

"Wtf are those stats"
A 70-minute long analysis on one of my favorite units? The 3 Azama fans are eating well, myself especially!
As one of 3 Azama fans, I must thank you for this video!
hello fellow member of the 3 azama fans club lol
@@r.c.3813well, I guess we have everyone in the club here
Holy shit, I found the other two at last
THERE IS MORE OF US?!
I never realized that his growths were so good like what a fantastic stat spread!
Fr he had a sleeper build this entire time
Considering the shifting meta of Fates over the past few years, I wonder what a current tier list of Birthright would roughly look like
Rev Azama is even more tragic than BR Azama. If he joined at a reasonable time then he could realistically be top 15 units in the game because of how awful the early heart seal options are but bro is just lacking
It's hilarious, both of Hinoka's retainers are high-investment trainee-like units. The devs knew what they were doing with Fates
Azama is one of the units id be interested in hearing the best corrin class pass on. His bases and growths sounds like it could fun to blow it on making a monster
Imo, Berserker might be the best Corrin class for Azama. His natural bulk helps patch up Berserker's poor def, and the class itself really boosts his monstrous hp, strength, and speed. Berserker also gives him rally strength to pair with his rally luck, a really nice pair of rallies. And if you don't mind spending extra seals then Berserker also gives access to Sol to help his enemy phase tanking, but due to needing an extra seal I would say this is only a neat bonus but isn't one of the main draws of this class. The only problem is being locked with E clubs, but Azama's locked to E weapons no matter where he promotes, so this isn't as much as a problem as it is for other units.
@@travisfree2206beserker realistically isn’t better then mechanist. And if you are using a beserker for enemy phase you aren’t proccing sol because no proccing skills with any of the 1-2 range options. Quick salve is honestly enough mitigation ( especially paired with potent potion and replication)anyway. There aren’t really many things better then hidden weapon access for a unit with azama’s stats so you’d either be a using it to get him master ninja as opposed to mechanist ( which isn’t even necessarily better because of how good apothecary skills are on a mechanist especially with replicate in the mix) or b just grabbing some skills. Samurai notably gets him vantage and Astra and mercenary which gets him strong riposte sol and if you really want another rally rally skill
The answer is usually wyvern--it's just such a strong class. 8 movement and flying on a bulky statline is just so hard to pass up.
@@sontaranmc2109 not in birthright though arguably in conquest. Shuriken access is much more valuable then flight on most birthright maps with how enemy phase focused birthright is. Flight doesn’t help you ko 5 units on enemy phase much in most situations ( and in some maps with certain dragon veins it’s even a hinderance like getting around on the boat map). You really need a obscene level of power to ohko with a hand axe and that’s what you need to make wyvern worth it over master ninja or mechanist for the average physical unit in birthright. Being able to double at 1-2 range is just so much more impactful then the few niche cases where flight is an actual upside. One shotting things consistently at 1-2 range is pretty much a life and death vantage odin specific thing ( or alternatively nyx/Leo in the same build if they support odin and gain access to samurai that way) so getting to that point with a wyvern without doing extra maps with handaxes is not exactly super feasible. And even if you could manage that it wouldn’t be worth it over sol+strong riposte or vantage/astra on a mechanist
There is no sugarcoating it. He’s the goat. He’s so good he nerfed himself and he’s still entirely usable and also funny. One of the only natural great masters. What a fucking baller.
Not having watched the video yet, i have to say. I have used azama quite a few times and never have i been dissapointed, i have experimented with many classes for him and while he isn't always a main carry unit, he is always really good!
Making Azama a Mechanist was one of the best decisions I've ever made, him and Saizo wipe the floor with the late game.
Shout out to that one person who had their online My Castle dedicated entirely to Azama in skills and theme 🗣️ I'll never forget you
i will not stand for this azama shaming anymore
I started talking about this with another comment, but I think that Azama is the Birthright unit that makes the best case for marrying Corrin for access to the Nohr exclusive classes, particularly Fighter, Wyvern, and Cav. To start, Azama marries F!Corrin, so you still get Jakob in the early game instead of Felicia, which is a huge boon over marrying M!Corrin to a female unit. Next, the Nohrian classes further enhance Azama's natural bulk, a rarity in the Hoshidan classes. Now I want to highlight the 3 class lists that I think Azama would excel in the most. First is Cavalier: to be honest, almost every unit would like access to Cavalier, and Azama is no different; Elbow Room and Shelter are great skills, Cav has decent growths across the board except for magic, and it has access to lances as an unpromoted class, so Azama would still get decent experience from the Sword Cavs and Wolfskin if he manages to get C lances. Next is Wyvern: I'll also keep this one short: Lunge is a great movement skill that almost no one in Birthright has access too (off the top of my head I think its exactly Scarlet, Corrin, and Corrin's spouse), Wyvern's unique promotion branch offers both Rally Defense and Savage Blow depending which role you want Azama to play; a defensive rally bot to help the bulk problem prevalent in Birthright or to low the HP of groups of bulky enemies to ensure the KO. Personally I think the rally bot option is the better option because Birthright isn't as player phase focused as Conquest. And last is my personal pick for Azama's best class, Fighter. The skills from Fighter itself aren't the greatest, HP +5 is nice to have but doesn't really matter that much, and Gamble can often hurt as much as it helps. What Fighter really brings to Azama are it's promotions, Hero and Berserker. Hero is a great class all around, excellent growths, and Sol, and because this is Birthright, Hero'll have access to the kodatchi, a great 1-2 range option that leverages his higher strength stat, as opposed to Great Master which fights for the 1 javelin or the Bolt Naginata that uses his lower magic stat. But Berserker is my pick for Azama's best overall class. Berserker's growths really enhance Azama's strength, speed, and HP (his best stats). Best the reason I choose Berserker over all other classes is for its skills: Rally Strength and Axefaire. Like other faire skills, a flat +5 damage is great no matter who the unit is, but because of Azama's potential for a high speed stat, he potentially turns that +5 to a +10. But in truth the real reason I value Berserker!Azama so highly is because of Rally Strength. Rally Strength is a phenomenal skill that'll help all your physical units reach KO benchmarks on certain enemies they may not have reached before. And if you really want to be crazy and don't mind the extra investment, you could also get his A+ support with Subaki for access to Rally Speed, turning him into one of the better rally bots you'll have access to in Birthright. But unlike other rally bot contenders like Shigure, Azama would actually have the bulk to survive if placed on the frontline, meaning he could rally on player phase and still act as an enemy phase tank with access to a decent 1-2 range weapon (Throwing Club). I know that marrying Corrin can make any unit worth using, but I think Azama makes the best case for marrying Corrin to access the otherwise unavailable Nohrian classes.
Saizo in theory could be another corrin marriage option, he has pretty flexible stats all around and can use magic competantly well but with corrin what you can do is have her use dark mage as a secondary, this results in a much needed improvement for magical offense for birthright which typically doesn't have many at high regard and this is with addition with the children characters where they can be vantage sorcerer's and can be close to how Elise!Ophelia is. for saizo though he could have orochi marriage which can somewhat do a similar thing but it's inferior
Honestly I love Azama this weird stats for his class feels really intentional with his personality.
Kuon’s theme out the gate is so real, respect.
omggg i hope a mitama or oboro video is made eventually
Early promoting azama into great master just makes him the best unit in birthright until around the time where you get ryoma. What a funny little guy
Trauma Team OST spotted!!
I've never played this game but Azama has always been my favorite character in it.
So I've been watching these for a while and just kind of wonder if I've been playing Fates wrong this entire time
Is the Fates meta like rewarding preplanning (perhaps even to a higher degree than 3H due to the lower reclassing flexibility) and using every Seal you get access to to stack as many skills onto your team with the intent for the "final" skill pickup be in their forever class to be efficient about it?
I feel that most of the newer games reward you for preplanning. Fates 3H and Engage are all much easier when you plan what you do ahead of time since it costs less resources in the long run.
@@hanzou1238 it's super intuitive to think about preplanning in 3H just because of the story setting and a little less in Engage since it's in a similar situation to Fates where it's not telegraphed to you, but does benefit from having fixed Weapon Ranks (don't have to worry about training weapon rank to get access to good weapons and just picking up the weapon rank from the Emblems) and midgame units coming with innate SP (even before calculating combat and the Well)
I was always turned off from reclassing because of having to go back down to E rank weapons and feeling as if I was back in FE6 grinding weapon ranks. I think the game tried to make it easier by flat out negating Player Crit Chance so you can get those combats in, but that's still a lot of combat just to get access to Iron weapons and maybe some effective weaponry
@@BlueLightning2554Bronze/Brass Weapons in Fates are actually really nice if you forge them. The extra Dodge is nice but the higher accuracy matters a ton, and the inability to Crit or proc skills isn’t that much of a downside because both of those things make Guard Gauge tanking less reliable. Buying a few Bronze/Brass weapons and forging them to +1 or +2 is often more cost-effective than buying Iron or Steel weapons in the long-run. As such, the “E-rank Hell” is only relevant on units that want the super-effective (D-rank) or magic weapons (C-rank), and you can still raise those ranks fairly quickly with smart use of the Pair-Up mechanics.
So yeah, reclassing out of base weapon ranks *can* be inconvenient sometimes but it’s not quite as bad as it may seem.
@@cartooncritic7045 like maybe doing Pair Up chaining? Like doing a Rescue chain in GBA using Take and Canto to shuttle people around
@@BlueLightning2554 This can help for sure but I was also thinking of using Dual Strikes with the unit whose ranks you want to train as the supporting unit for several others who want the help of a Dual Strike. This is one of the best uses of Dragonstone Corrin early on and is also the best way to train units in Bow classes.
I hear Paradise Killer music near the end, oh yeah!!!
i like having azama's bulk on my teams plus i like promoting sakura to mage classess as soon as possible so she can start murdering so i often use azama as my main healer it's pretty fun having a bulky healer
I know it's technically DLC but dread fighter Azama actually solos everything
Dread fight Azama unironically to me is better than Ryoma.
I love me some Azama. His ability to oneshot ninja's in chapter 10 is pretty good.
I hope Hinata is up sometime.
I'm curious how he compares to other units if we allow to break the no online/dlc/path bonus rule, because you basically get 2 dread scrolls just for having all routes and he gets to switch to a decently bulky, high str physical class with shuriken and also get promo boni immediately, which just makes him insane immediately. You can also dip into Mechanist easily since you get to keep shuriken rank and pick up quick salve. He also gets a ton of PP damage if you want to use him for boss kills from spendthrift and aggressor. Literally all the problems immediately disappear and he just becomes amazing with minimal investment.
My favorite way to run Azama is 15/5 Great Master -> Mechanist/Butler/Falcon Knight
Mechanist being the best of the 3 combat wise, Falcon being the best support, and Butler being a really good mixture of the two
Im a huge fan of Butler Azama as a carry. Renewal + Live to Serve lets him stay topped off almost always while also healing another carry with festals
Its not too hard to get 15/5, its a bit costly using sun festals every turn, but generally BR gives you enough where you never need to buy them even when having Azama chew through them
Berserker Azama is my favorite thing to do with him but in Birthright that requires sacrificing your MC's talent and potentially S support.
I feel like Azama is best used in a draft scenario. He’s got all the right tools to make himself good, and if your other character options were just more limited he becomes a lot better
Azama is so funny. He was my best unit by far in my first birthright playthrough, way better than my Ryoma and Corrin.
It's little wonder why Azama gets overlooked. He usually turns out well for me as a unit. He's another potential low-mid investment unit with a master seal, friendship seal and maybe marriage seal if you're willing to spend more resources for Azama. Something like Rally Luck, Rally Speed, Darting Blow, Renewal and then pending on marriage, he could grab something like Rend Heaven, Gentilhomme, or even if you're willing to spend a Heart Seal, Mechanist can be nice for Replicate shenanigans.
But like you already said, he faces competition. Still he's not terrible. I am trying him out as a Great Master to Faclon Knight right now.
Azama is probably my favorite joke unit in the series. He has fantastic physical stats, but joins as a monk, forcing you to go through effort to actually use them. Fits the character as well.
I like using the first Heart Seal on him to make the Kagero/Azama +6 Str Mitama pair easier to build support; he farms that Flier map better than most other units and likes Kagero's pairups a lot. I've had him turn out great and poorly but at minimum any Birthright player should try giving him the first Heart Seal in at least one playthrough to see how it pans out.
Staff users are actually really easy to grind. Go to Mokushu with the staff user holding a bunch of bloom festals and a strong unit. Go to the bottom where there's a choke point and spikes and put the strong unit on spikes. Unequip the strong unit's weapon and let them sit there taking spike damage every turn and the staff user can heal spam to level 20 with ease!
You don’t really need a full level 20 promo on azama for his late game stats to be good as a mechanist. 15 is usually where I promote him after instantly handing him a heart seal and brass Yumi the moment he is recruited. Also if you really want to train him as long as he gains one strength ( he’s gonna gain one strength with that growth let’s be honest if he levels ) with a subaki pair up he can one round the stationary armor knights in the following map. Subaki defensive pair up usually leaves them in a situation where one of them can one round any enemy on that map if you’ve been using subaki. It’s a good map for him to start working on training him
Waiting to promote is a pitfall that the fates community is still stuck in.
I literally love Azama as a character, he might be an asshole but i LOVE my favorite asshole monk guy
Also his daughter is equaly as hilarious and funny as he is
Are these citra mods or are they their own emulators
My azama is insane every time I use him
the moment that I realized hes good as a physical unit I realized I found out a secret
I really like Azama's personality (nihilistic monk). Unfortunately all of the class routes involve some sort of compromise. He's definitely a character to use a Dread Scroll on, if you're willing to dip into class bonuses. I know it's taboo to say, but Azama really loves it, and he's in an otherwise unfortunate situation.
dread scroll is so good on him fr, I like pairing him with charlotte in revelation
Azama's an interesting character, as he's essentially Birthright's analogue to CQ Mozu, proving that High Investment doesn't automatically mean Bad. However, investment options in BR are extremely limited, making him a pain to train no matter what you do with him. If you don't want to spend a heart seal on him, it takes at minimum 5 chapters for him to get access to a different class-line, leaving you stuck with using him as a 3rd healer until you want to promote him.
If you want to reclass him, you have him in a yumi-locked class for ch8-9, losing his desert-walking in ch8, & he's stuck with weak res and at WTD against the swarms of mages in ch9. While he's an arguably better bow unit than Takumi later on, Takumi doesn't require a heart seal to have, and isn't doubled by the ch10 ninjas (L11 averages)(admittedly very easy to fix)
Early promotion solves most of his problems, but even then, that only puts him on par with your good physical units in early/mid game (L1 GM promoted @L10 Azama is about equal to a L14 Oboro w/ Nohr Enmity active). Early promo also kills off his lategame, leaving him to compete with the incredible midgame pre-promotes Birthright throws at you
Azama's the one unit where I'd say that an instant promotion doesn't completely kill his prospects as a carry. His growths are just good enough to let him get by.
His personal always confused me. What is the point of building him if his personal skill incentivises he sit there without any weapons
I know you don't count these classes but I like putting Azama in Dark Falcon with a magic pair up like Orochi because then he does great magic damage and fixes Orochi's speed when she needs to fight making them a pretty good pair, plus Mitama ends up amazing with Orochi as a mother.
Man, he's actually Kellam, isn't he.
I’ve never liked Azama as a character, but I must admit he’s a lot of fun as a unit and Mitama is great. I’m generally in favor of reclassing as a mechanic and he’s an excellent example of a unit that makes it fun and feels unique because, not in spite of reclassing.
Omg it's Tsunny hi tsunny
Free him of the Monk class and then he goes off
