- These stations were selected based on factors including aesthetic, design and my impression of their overall vibe, rather than a formal criteria. Let me know which station(s) you thought deserved to be on this list.
Also, I finally got to vlog 200! Thank you to everyone for your support for the channel, and I look forward to continuing to film more videos (and upload more regularly now that uni is done for the year).

The endgame of all train videos about to break the internet as we know
Name a more ambitious cross-over of Melbourne train stations
The narre warren station will soon be pretty good
Great call putting Carrum number 1. Cant beat a sunset view across the bay with trains passing by!
It was an obvious choice, wasn't it?
You ruined it!
I love Jolimont not so much because of the station but for the walk up the ramp and getting to the top and seeing the MCG before descending down past the statues. Never get tired of that walk.
Really? I like Clifton Hill Station.
I agree, Carrum is the best station in Melbourne, the views are amazing. But if you draw a slightly longer bow, and head to country Victoria, have a look at Ballarat train station. It is worth a trip just to see this station. It’s an older 1880’s station, well looked after and even has a public bar on the platform.
I'm definitely considering making another video of the best V/line stations, and Ballarat would be up there.
Rosanna is a level crossing success story. So too is Reservoir, Preston and Bell Stations.
Years ago I travelled daily from Tecoma into the city. Such peaceful place and I will never forget the fragrance of the hills when returning in the early evening.
Would have been a lovely place to commute from!
I wouldn’t have predicted Carrum would be your number 1.
But it also reinforces my personal point of view that it would’ve been good if Bonbeach, Chelsea and Edithvale were elevated stations instead of trenches.
With the railway line so close to the bay it would’ve been a nice view from all the stations I mentioned.
Fully agree. It's a mighty shame, because it could have become a tourist attraction!
I moved to Carnegie last year and I love and feel so safe using the station every day. Good shout putting it in Top 3!
its a very interesting video i lived in melbourne for two years three years ago .during the renovation train line railway they did a really god job its fantastic im very very happy its a modern and cutting edge city 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰😇😇😇😇😇
Mornington council trashed Mornington railway station many years ago,it was a crime because it was so beautiful
Macleod near Latrobe is also quite a peaceful station. I wouldn’t call it underused but it’s also very green like Tacoma and doesn’t look like it’s changed much for years.
I quite like quaint appeal it has. It’s also only one stop up from Rosanna.
However, it’s probably got one of the most dangerous crossings on the network still intact. I believe it’s a fairly blind corner with no alarms or gates to stop people crossing. It probably should be addressed soon.
Same goes for needing to cross the lines to change platforms even if those are gated.
I think Box Hill station should have been on the list, simple layout, spacious platforms, completely sheltered, easy access to shops and food courts, and a nearby bus stop and tram stop, you can go almost anywhere in Melbourne from Box Hill.
Glad Carnegie got a run! I find it interesting as a daily user of the station that it seems significant dirtier than Murrumbeena. A few of these newer stations need a pressure wash!
heatherdale's definitely one of my favourites. i've had no business to get off at heatherdale until recently and it's really grown on me since. so happy to see it make this list!!
The old Heatherdale was the best went chunks of clay would roll randomly down on to the platform.
Preston. Level crossing removal turned it from a boxy concrete job into a giant liquorice allsort. As well as having a decent amount of cover upstairs, there’s a sheltered waiting room inside & the skyrails provide shelter for anyone just waiting to cross the road. It’s one of the rare manned suburban stations, which is handy if you actually like talking to people. My only gripe is that the entrances are on the side and that there isn’t a third exit directly towards the market.
I agree. I went to Preston not long after it opened, as was perplexed that they didn't design it so you could just head straight out to the market, which would be a significant trip generator for the station.
Its funny that you say Preston is a manned station, because 9 times out of 10, there's no one in that office
Im so happy that Rosanna station was on here. I use it almost every day to get to and from school.
Nice one. I have to admit that I am a little bit dissapointed thatJacana and Albion didn't get a mention. In my opinion, they are the epitome of modern train station design.
Yeah looking back on it, that's a massive oversight on my behalf. The chewing gum paved surfaces at both stations just hit different.
Personally I like the stations from Hawksburn, Toorak , Armadale, and Malvern. All built at the same time with the same red brick architecture, and wrought iron shelters. They are over 100 years old and still in excellent condition. The trenches are more attractive too, mostly earth and covered in trees and plants. The new trenches at Glen Huntly and Ormond are not very attractive imo, with the high concrete walls, and box section steel braces.
I am surprised Hawthorn did not get a mention. It is a beautiful old world station.
hey. just wanted to let you know. i appreciate your contribution . Melbourne is a great city and has a rich history, the public transport system is a part of it . well done.
Aww thanks! I appreciate your comment :)
Me: "Hey I sure hope Werribee line gets on the list somehow"
"Retaining the sea theme, we move across the bay to Seaholme"
Me: *Unholy screeching in happiness due to it being one of my favorite stations due to associated memories*
Hahaha I'm glad someone else likes it. It's a very pleasant station!
@@melbournerailwayvideos In commute time with buses it's also the closest station to me. Beats out Altona by a couple of minutes, and Newport by about 10-15 minutes. I love Seaholme's peaceful atmosphere and its proximity for Altona North residents as well as Seaholme and Altona residents
I’d love a rehash of this once the Metro Tunnels are open! Love and agree with all the detailing you’ve gone through regarding general aesthetic, accessibility, etc… keep em coming!
Thanks Keshav! A potential revisit might be full of Metro Tunnel stations though lol
I agree with Carrum - it's super relaxing just to sit on the platform and enjoy the view. Honestly, it wouldn't be a bad place for a picnic :) Mentone is similar in design and they kept the old style station building in a nearby park. For old school style stations, I like Sandringham, Ripponlea and Williamstown. Fun fact: Williamstown and Glen Iris each have 3 stations in the same suburb :) Heyington station is also in a lovely location by the river and the stairs going down make you feel like you're on a walk, not going to the station.
Nice one. Appreciate all the details and facts you wove in. 👍
Thanks mate! Good to hear!
A conclusive and informative video, thank you.
Always a pleasure!
Congrats on the milestone! Can't wait till the next top 10 at 300
Thanks! Let's hope I don't leave you waiting for too long
I like this list, it's nice to see appreciate for the more niche stations like seaholme
Thanks! As a train nerd, I can't just sit idly by and see deserving stations miss out!
Yep, carrum would be my no.1 for the view alone. Followed by diamond creek and any of the other mountain stations.
It's finally here!!
Took long enough!
A worthy top 10. My local of Mooroolbark is a pretty good station for similar reasons to Heatherdale, and certainly a leap forward from the old station.
Mooroolbark is another great shout. It was hard to not just make the whole top 10 be skyrail stations!
I went to Mooroolbark for the first time in years just the other day, and it was great. Really looking forward to the new Croydon complex too.
Same I’m from around that area
Enjoyed your video, I have a family member over there right now and trying to get them
Yo take some clips snd photos of some of the trains. They won’t. Flinders station is impressive. Maybe one of these days I will get over there. Thank you for sharing.
Hope you do get over here at some point! I'm sure you'll enjoy our rail network and our trams!
very enjoyable top ten!! i felt like the leonardo dicaprio pointing meme whenever i saw a station i frequent haha
Hahahahaha. You're lucky to be able to frequent these stations!
My station being right next to carrum, I can agree it's the best
Wow! Conurbation looks so different holy crap! Haven’t been off that station since probably around 2012-2014. I didn’t realise it got a makeover, I just thought it was Moreland station. Wow has time flown by. I remember it’s old crappy look and was easier to k ow where to get off. Seeing this new look is making feel where the heck is Bell Street haha 😆 😅
Quite the transformation!
Coburg used to be my station before I moved to Central Victoria. Very pleasantly surprised by the new overpass station. It’s beautiful!
The walking/cycling path has always been there. It goes alongside the rail from Princes Park. I used to race the train as the distances between stations are not that far and level crossing stopped traffic giving the bike path a clear run.
There will be more great stations like ANZAC.
I didn't realise that the bike path has been there for so long.
i would like to see a video of potential new station video. some suggestions include reopening discontinued stations such as Clyde, Tooradin and Koo Wee Rup on the Cranbourne line that continued part of old line due to the home develops in the area. Cranbourne East is also a factor since its is on the same old railway line (could be an under line station due to Casey fields)
The Belgrave line is so beautiful! Well atleast near the end
I agree. I love how much greenery there is!
@@melbournerailwayvideos too right
Good video. I’ve always thought Hawthorn is a lovely old station, with its large old roof that came from Flinders Street I believe.
I agree. It was stiff to miss out on this list!
Go and visit the new Narre Warren Station. It should be finished by April. Looks beautiful so far.
I always liked Camberwell, South Yarra, Upper Ferntree Gully, Caulfield, Richmond & Heyington stations.
Yeah they're some great shouts! I'm not a huge fan of Heyington because it doesn't have disabled access but it's definitely quirky.
@@melbournerailwayvideos Oh ok.
Its one of the 3 stations I worked at voluntarily in the early 80s, pulling the destination signs down or hanging them up at. Others being Jolimont & West Richmond.
And I had a key to lock/unlock the gates when trains came and went regarding checking tickets.
Its was fun. VR had no idea I was doing it. 😉
I have always loved Camberwell personally
I think Epping or South Morang should have got a mention. Clearly the best stations because of their Absolutely wonderful scenery and friendly locals /s
Carrum!!!! absolutely
I used to live in Tecoma! Only station with one train track 😊
For what it's worth, both Ashburton and Alamein stations also only have one train track and single platforms 😊
@@bluehuerue6893 Tecoma has no 'next train' electronic info board nor block control signal lamps (up or down lines). Does Ashburton or Alamein have them?
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing. Actually, Mount Waverley, Glen Waverley and Clayton stations may be worth including next time.
Thanks! Yeah, those are definitely some good shouts. I was definitely considering Clayton!
Clayton is good but it doesn’t have a rear exit like at Carnegie, only one front exit. There is a rear exit but can only be used for emergencies They didn’t put barriers at the rear so can’t use the rear which is a shame because it’s closer to the car park (and my home!)
Flinders street is alright but it really needs a lot of maintenance and cleaning.
As much as they’ve improved Coburg, I do miss simply being able to step onto the platform at street level!
chelsea station, all the beach ones
Carrum is a lovely view and overall a net positive upgrade for the network but unfortunately the traffic didn’t reduce as expected and the skyrail does mean opposite buildings lose any view of the beach. Aesthetically it’s excellent for most though
The same can be said about many level crossing removals. The program has a specific intention of removing the crossing, and although sometimes they do even more than that, they're not always as diligent as they should be about fixing traffic. It's a shame, but obviously their budget is finite and they have an awful lot on their plate already, I reckon.
Did you notice that there are no line signal lamps at Tecoma? Is that common?
Try standing on the platform at Carnegie on a winters day when it’s cold, windy and raining, you might not rate it so highly.
ill be honest tacoma is my fav station on network before preston and coburg very nice too
Yeah Tecoma is definitely unique! I can definitely see why it's your favourite!
Check out Union station Mont Albert I’ve been told it cost 1.4B dollars to complete 🤮 apart from Southern Cross station I would say it’s the best station in Victoria with a small commuter base.
Cant believe you didnt put in Aircraft 🙂 - here's chatgpt's take on it "Ah, the marvelously paradoxical 'Aircraft' train station, where the absence of facilities is truly an avant-garde artistic statement in passenger inconvenience! Here, one can bask in the sheer minimalist charm of no seating, no information boards, and no restrooms, allowing travelers to immerse themselves fully in a truly authentic 'back-to-basics' experience. "
Hahaha that's a classic!
W
Personally Westgarth station for me
We'll have to agree to disagree on that one Adam
Flinders st station is dirty, cold and grotty and needs to be renovated. All they seem to do is splash a bit of paint on it every few years.
Please print the station name under the pictures. As a Melburnian, I am struggling to understand some of the new names.
And keep up the good work.
Thank you.
Yeah, I'll try and do that next time!
Lynbrook!
Enjoyed the video. To be honest it could be in the UK as it looks so similar.
You reckon? I'm surprised. What makes you think it's so similar?
And they STILL HAVE NOT GOT A RAIL SERVICE TO THE AIRPORT!
Hopefully that will eventually happen. Actually, if they extended the Airport West tram line a little further, they could have trams to the airport.
Glenroy
COBURG MENTIONED
I would have bumped one for Hawthorn which is a personal favourite
Good shout. I have a clear bias towards the newer stations but the network is definitely better for having heritage stations like Hawthorn!
Yes. Tiffany Lamb did a TV ad on platform 1 at Hawthorn in the 80s for Twinings tea.
What rank is Southern Cross Station? Isn't that number 1?
Brighton Beach is two faced. In summer it's lovely, although the temptation to jump on Slack and say you'll be working from the beach today is great. In winter, I'm sure it's the most miserable railway station in Melbourne.
Good point, and you can say the same thing about Carrum I reckon. I just like focusing on the good, but it would be bitterly cold and wild at times during winter!
Carrum was so good they named a board game after it
ROSANNA MENTIONED
I know it’s a controversial one, but I like the new Union Station. I like the design of the southern cross station rebuild. Sadly not around to remember the old spencer Street station. But in reality, I don’t like anything else about it.
I also like the new Union station! It has quite a nice design, adequate shelter, and nice landscaping.
Good video! Yes, I wish Cheslea, Edithvale and Bonbeach had been elevated instead of placed in a trench. But, the NIMBYs won that battle.
Yeah. They're still nice stations, but Carrum just makes it so clear that they could have been so much nicer!
@@melbournerailwayvideos Exactly. I have friends that live in Edithvale and they were hoping the line would be elevated instead of trenched. They had a lot to saw about the new station's flaws. Lack of shade, narrow footpaths, poor sightlines, complicated station access, and crossing Station St and Nepean Hwy as a pedestrian still takes 2 cycles of the traffic lights.
Skyrail is an eyesore
No mention of southern cross station?
It's too smelly, it's closed for the night network because it was privatised, it doesn't have a good selection of shops. It could be so much better than what it is!
I prefer Ruthen station as I used to work there in the 80's😅.
Fair enough!
Coburg’s single platform is indicative of the decades of neglect and that the Upfield line was slated for closure so didn’t attract any improvements and all those wooden gates were kept operating because of under-investment. Many wooden gates were abolished in the ‘60s and ‘70s except for the Upfield line which was going to close (now saved). Perversely, I’m glad many wooden gates survived as preserved artifacts.
I was particularly irritated at the cost cutting thinking that stopped all Upfield trains after 7pm for decades. I was able to use the Sydney Rd tram which is why they did it, there was talk of re-routing the Sydney Rd trams along the rail corridor like the Port Melbourne line. I’m not sure why the closure didn’t go ahead as a succession of governments rode roughshod over public opinion and did what they wanted anyway.
The neglect has continued to a lesser degree with their failure to duplicate the last section from Gowrie to Upfield. I wonder if it will ever happen!
Yarraville also had a wooden gate until at least the late 1990’s.
So no old stations in it
Personally, I think Moreland Station looks more sophisticated than Coburg Station.
Whittlesea line was cut back to Epping
But try to run to Epping then you have to get off and get another train to Whittlesea which was only one blue carriage train
I lived in Epping in Coulstock street which is only 2 streets away from 1971 to 2007
The current Epping train station is the third train station that Epping has had
It was actually cut back to Lalor, but would have reopened to Epping by the time you were there.
@@melbournerailwayvideos people could still get a one carriage train to Whittlesea right up until 1968
@@melbournerailwayvideos the original South Morang train station was right next to the South Morang football ground
Really? Wow, you should update the Wikipedia page then! It says that the line was closed in 1959 from Lalor to Whittlesea.
Great historical insights. Thanks!
@@melbournerailwayvideos VicRail stopped freight trains 1958 but keeped a diesel operated train, which looked a lot like the blue bouncers
From Epping to Whittlesea was never electrified
I remember catching the red rattlers & the blue bounces & the silver streaks & then the supers to school back in the 1980s
I left Epping in 2007 & haven’t been back since November 2008 I doubt I would recognise Epping today but I’ll always be an Epping boy 😂
There are more rabbits than people at Wattle Glen Train station.
Karim😂
Carrum is freaking beautiful, its the only station on the Frankston line where you can see all the way out, and it was actually the first place I went to when travelling on trains by myself. Personally, I would've gone for Bonbeach instead because it is really quiet and I love how it looks on the outside (Can't say the same for Chelsea) even though they share the same design. Even as Bonbeach and Carrum in my top 5, along with Hurstbridge, Aspendale and Sandringham. I know I'm going to get a lot of hate for choosing Bonbeach as my top station lol, probably shouldve built it as skyrail
I have a soft spot for all those stations you listed. I personally prefer Chelsea to Bonbeach, because I like the colour scheme more, but they're all really nice seaside stations!
I like Carrum, but CZcams seems to think its spelled "Karim" lmao
glen waverley is s tier
Bro no southern cross is crazy?
I hope Burnley made the Top 10?
My home suburb.
Hahaha it didn't quite make it unfortunately.
@@melbournerailwayvideos Oh well, you'd have to have Richmond in there. Funnily enough its bigger than Adelaide's, Brisbane's and Perth's main central station.
10 platforms!
Yeah it's deceptively large, isn't it!
that Briton platform was to be a loop line from Cheltenham as for the rest of your comments it shows how young you are that you don't appreciate old architecture most LCR stations are cold and soulless designed so that people don't get exposed to any possible sun just stainless steel and concrete no aesthetics what so ever
COBURG?
????
Interesting way to spell Carrum (Karim)
Yeah, I think it was auto-generated. Thanks for pointing that out; should be fixed.
layla?? don’t u mean lalor?
Hahahaha. I'm on the Lalor bandwagon, not the Lawlor one!
Newport robbed. Changeover stop for 3-4 different lines. 10 mins from city. Coffee in mornings for patrons. Great facilities
Not having Southern Cross should be a crime…
Maybe once they fix the air quality levels there.
What about a list of the worst stations? ;-)
Carrum, in winter.
Dandenong. In desperate need of another renovation. Looks very rundown and needs a redesign to cope with the number of people that use it.
One word: Ripponlea
Good shout! I'm a sucker for the new stations, but Ripponlea has a level of charm that few other stations have!
The list is good but Brighton beach i dont think should be on the list and cragiburn station should be here
What do you like about Craigieburn?
@@melbournerailwayvideos its easy to navigate i live there so i know where things are if your with your friends there alot of things to do aswell
Add Canterbury station to the poor design list... a struggle for aged and infirm with steep ramp and stairs access only.
fuck i get my vapes in carnegie
Thanks for that one Marcus
Karim? Lol
no,carrum
First
That's pretty good when there will be millions of comments on this video soon
Well done , .........You Actually pronounced LALOR Correctly, NOT Lay Lor.
The downside to all the elevated stations.. a huge loss of privacy to 1000s of Melburnians. As a user of trains, the new works are treat
That is true, but those same residents also benefit from having a new park at their doorstep, which I reckon is a pretty good compromise!
I am sorry to say, but at least one person in Murrumbeena committed suicide as a result of these works.. so sad.. but again , for us who love train travel, the improvements..but we're they worth the cost
I meant great
Loss of privacy how?
@@jdillon8360 people look right into previously totally private gardens
Heatherdale is cool unless you want to park your car there. Not going to happen.
I disagree about Tecoma..it is scary and dark when getting off in the evening..so secluded it feels really unsafe ..even though it was closer to where I used to live I preferred to use Upwey or Begrave stations when going home..
scariest encounter you'll have at tecoma station is a maccas protester, why are you afraid of such a calm friendly area?
@@user-dd8gi1ff3z its a calm place..but not enough lighting at night..it just feels like that to me..dark,run-down..and you do get kids that run in between Upper Ferntree Gully -Upwey -Belgrave portion that just hoon about..drink..on the train..etc..been subject to harassment..
