Lily Potter's SECRET Letter to Sirius Black - Harry Potter Explained

- Hey everyone,
Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In today’s video, we’re going to be discussing Harry Potter’s mother, Lily, and Harry’s godfather, Sirius Black. More specifically, we’re going to be taking a look at a secret letter that Lily wrote to Sirius in the year 1981- shortly after Harry Potter was born.
Harry Potter was of course born to parents James Potter and Lily Evans. The story of their love was an interesting one, as when they first met Lily wasn’t too impressed by James. Lily had grown up in the town of Cokeworth, and spent much of her youth with her childhood companion Severus Snape, who grew up in nearby Spinner’s End. When Lily and Snape began attending Hogwarts, James Potter was horrible to Snape- which negatively skewed Lily’s perception of James. However, when Snape eventually began to go down a very dark and troubled path- a path involving dark magic and terrible people, things changed. One day, while Snape was being bullied by James, Lily intervened. The embarrassed Snape then lashed out at Lily- calling her a ‘filthy mudblood’- this effectively ended their relationship.
While James was at school he was a part of a quartet of boys that called themselves The Marauders. The boys began their studies in 1971, the same year as Severus Snape, and they all had one thing in common - they were all Gryffindors. Before the sorting ceremony even happened the boys hit it off, and when they were eventually sorted in to the same house, they knew that they were destined to be friends. Though the boys got on with many of their other classmates, this particular group of 4 boys had a truly special bond. This group was comprised of James Potter, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, and the subject of this video: Sirius Black.
Sirius was a great friend to the Potters- so much so that he was chosen to be the godfather of Harry Potter. Sirius hailed from the powerful wizarding family, The Blacks- and while many of his family members placed an unreasonable amount of value on blood purity, Sirius did not share this same belief. Many of the members of the black family went down a very dark path- but Sirius was able to choose his own path. After graduating, Sirius, along with the other Marauders, went on to join the Order of the Phoenix. The purpose of the order was to oppose Voldemort and the Death Eaters. However, it turned out that not all members of the Order were good-as Sirius’ old friend, Peter Pettigrew, would go on to frame Sirius for a heinous crime.
In 1981, just 1 day after the Potters were murdered- Peter Pettigrew murdered 12 muggles using a dark and powerful blasting curse. Someway, somehow, Sirius Black was blamed, and was promptly sent to Azkaban. After being banished to Azkaban, seemingly the whole world turned on Sirius, and he was left there to rot for an astonishing 12 years. That was the 1st of November 1981.
However, just a few months before everything exploded, Sirius Black received a letter from none other than Lily Potter. This is what that letter said....

Peter Pettigrew was such a weak traitor it's hard to believe he is the strongest since he could kill so many muggles at one shot

I appreciate the examination of this letter. It's heartbreaking to realize Lilly, James, and Harry were such a hopeful family in such a dark time. How destroyed Sirius must have felt when he was seen as the person who betrayed the Potters. Thank you so much for your time/thought
Stop everyone stop I am crying 😭
Man I cry every time whenever I watch or hear about the friendship of marauders and the death of the potters due to pettigrew
@Ultimate Information yeah I know like such a good video *cough*not*cough* stop scamming ya stupid bot
And to realize all 4 friends were killed because of Voldemort 💔
I avoid rereading Lily and James Potter stories coz it’s so tragic how they died betrayed by a friend and their best friend takes the rap and is sent to prison for 12 yrs only to die protecting Harry two years later😢.

‘And next, Snape was kneeling in Sirius's old bedroom. Tears were dripping from the end of his hooked nose as he read the old letter from Lily. The second page carried only a few words: could ever have been friends with Gellert Grindelwald. I think her mind's going, personally!
Lots of love, Lily
Snape took the page bearing Lily's signature, and her love, and tucked it inside his robes.’
Lily being 22 when she died makes me feel really sad
@Ultimate Information stop spamming and self-promoting. Your vid isn’t even funny.
Oh shit since when am i older Then Lily Potter
I thought she was 21?
Apparently During the events of the Deathly Hallows, when Harry's parents, Sirius and Lupin appeared out of Resurrection Stone, Harry was around 4-5 years younger than his parents
@@Alt-yg5ng omg i dont remember but she was between 21-22 still sad :(
"As long as the Secret-Keeper refused to speak, You-Know-Who could search the village where Lily and James were staying for years and never find them, not even if he had his nose pressed against their sitting room window!"
So that's why Voldemort got rid of his nose, to be able to press his entire face against the window.
Either that or he didn't want Harry sticking a wand up his nose like he was a troll in a girls bathroom 🤔🤔🤔
Lol

When I came across this note in the books (not sure was it in the movie) I thought it was very nicely done by JKR. Brilliant in fact. It leads to so many stories like: the beginning of Peter's betrayal, Batilda's story of Dumbledore's past wit Grendelwald, Black's closeness to Harry and more. Brilliant pen stroke by JKR...Great video guys!
It was the confirmation of Dumbledore's past with Grindelwald and that Bathilda really knew the Dumbledores. Dumbledore and Grindelwald's history started in the middle of DH. The last part was revealed in Snape's memories.
@@rishithkumar8523 can you go in more detail about it??
@@marynalchadzian6135 what details do you want?
I think I cried when I first read that letter. The existence of toy brooms is adorable, and even more so that Sirius got baby Harry one. So sad to think of the loving family Harry should have had.
I recently knew Lupin was not trusted during the first war because he was a werewolf. So he was kinda excluded from the plan, which means that he lost four of his closest friends, Lily, James, Sirius and Peter, in just one night without knowing any truth. I feel really sad about this.
He knew that Sirius was made the secret keeper, but not when they switched it with Peter. Even Dumbledore didn't knew that part
It wasn't because he was a werewolf, everyone knew what he was for years and nobody cared. The books never specify how he came to be suspected, but I always thought Wormtail planted some evidence against him.
Yes, it was found by Harry in Sirius's room in Number 12 Grimmauld Place while they lived there after the wedding of Fleur and Bill, we know after that Snape took the picture with Lily in it and left the one with Harry zooming on the broom. That was a touching part to read, actually...
Touching?, How tf is that "touching", Snivellus literally torned and stole the picture of the Potter family and stole the part of the letter where it said "Lots of love, Lily", so he could imagine that it was for him.
How do you find that touching?, that's disturbingly awful.
@@MaikeruO
Because he cares so deeply about Lily, and later on, about Harry. His care for Lily, and actions resulting from that, are part of his entire character, and the specific example here adds to what is shown in his memories
I remember Snape found it along with the picture of Lily, James, and baby Harry and kept that part where Lily is...so much pain at that moment! I`m sure Snape has dreamt of being in James's place his whole life...
6:46 is when Sirius roasted that man to ashes 😂
About the prophecy, it is interesting to think that if Snape hadn't been standing there listening, and only heard what he did and no more, the prophecy wouldn't have been fulfilled.
I mean that's kind of the way time travel and prophecies work in HP. You literally *fulfill* them in order for them to work, as it's more just the way the entire time stream flows out

This was one of my favorite bits of Deathly Hallows, proving once and for all that Dumbledore WAS NOT the infallible, all good, grandfather figure we saw for most of the books. Same from the testimony from Aberforth and anything about Gellert Grindelwald included in the Deathly Hallows.
Amazing video, this channel deserves more than 200k subs
Video Ideas (will come back and edit if I think of more):
- How were the Death Eaters able to apperate/disapperate within Hogwarts during Deathly Hallows?
- What Harry's thoughts and feelings were towards Snape after the Deathly Hallows?
- Are Paintings almost like a spirit or a ghost of their former self or just a picture that has been bewitched
to act like themselves? (Asking this because in Deathly Hallows and Cursed Child Harry speaks with the Dumbledore painting
and it feels like he is talking to the real Dumbledore)
- What happens when a witch/wizard dies?
- Why didn't the Death Eaters use Avada Kedavra in every fight instead of duelling? (Spell can't be blocked so seems
logical from a Death Eaters standpoint to always use the spell)
- Why didn't Umbridge use Imperio when interrogating harry in The Order Of The Phoenix? (She already expressed that she is
comfortable with using Unforgivable curses so wouldn't it be logical and a lot less messy then Crucio)
- Why did McGonagall decide to send all Slytherins to the dungeons? (Surely she knew that a battle was to soon break out
as the weren't handing over Harry so why would she keep students locked up and in harms way)
- What happened to Voldemort's wand after he was defeated both 1st and 2nd times?
- Could wizards/witches become as trained and powerful in wandless magic as they were with a wand?
- Is the killing curse effective against all living beings? (Does it work with dementors, giants, spiders etc.)
- What were the other Ministries doing when Voldemort was at the height of his power? (could be 1st or 2nd wizarding war)
- Why was Merlin the most powerful wizard?
Apologies if you've made videos on these points in the past, just a few ideas I had in case you hadn't
Harry has had training to resist the Imperious curse, thanks to Barty Crouch Jr.
Plus, the Imperious curse requires calm, whereas crucio requires rage

Why the heck didn't Nevilles parents go into hiding also...
Snape told dumbledore he took it as the potters
@@Dave2801epic You'd think they'd still be cautious though as a precaution..
@@mrsdixon3524 they did went into hiding and used the fidelius charms as well but when the potters died and Voldemort disappeared, they thought the threat was over and thats why they came out of hiding and bellatrix and co was able to find nevilles parents and torture them
I don't think the Order realised that their son was also a target because Harry was born on the 31st where Neville wasn't so it wasn't to them as obvious I guess

what did it mean when lupin said to harry "Lilly was there for me at one of my darkest times" (can't remember the exact words lol) what was Lillys and lupins history?
@Oof Oooof69 ty!!! that makes sense
I think she also made the wolfsbane potion for him during and after school as snape did in POA. She was very good at potions and I’m sure she would want to make it for him after she learned he was a werewolf. That’s just the first thing I thought of when he said that line.
@@amandajones9370 Couldnt have, Wolfsbane was a later discovery. I think meaning Lily didnt reject lupin for being a werewolf and the stigma that went with it.

I have always wonder why James and lily couldn’t be their own secret keeper.
Or at least make Dumbledore the secret keeper. If you want one person to know where you are, one person to be able to find and help you if you need it, on person that could stand up to any attempt Voldemort could make to force them out of hiding, it would be Dumbledore

Wait a sec. If the Potters got any visitors, then Wormtail had to tell them. Bathilda would have known Sirius was not secret keeper and so would Dumbledore
OH MY GOD. You're right!!
J.K. Rowling definitely missed that part... and so that means Dumbledore knew Sirius was innocent and wanted him to be kept in Azkaban....
Oh but wait, she could've read the address from a piece of paper just like Harry did in OTP and therefore not have known that Wormtail was the secret keeper because she didn't whose hanwriting that was. And the Potters didn't tell her that it was Wormtails because they wanted everyone to believe Sirius was the secret keeper?
@@anntecz Very good point

Rereading Harry Potter books is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes it is! And every time I read the first few sentences I fall straight into the HP universe. It's like coming home. Since 1999, when I was 9 😊
I think the most interesting part of the letter is she mentions a Christmas gift from Petunia. Sort of reinforces that maybe Petunia did love her sister deep down. Even if it was a deliberately ugly gift, she could have just not sent anything.
I wonder if they were closer than the books let on.
No wait Albus DID know that Severus overheard! Aberforth caught him spying and brought him into the room. That's part of what just doesn't make sense about the whole situation....I've always wondered about the extent to which they were in hiding for Harry's birthday. Book 3 says they didn't put up the Fidelius until a week prior to the murders after someone (presumably Severus Snape) tipped them off that they were being targetted. Which explains why no one even considered the secret keepers would've been switched and why they felt safe - it'd only been a week. However, if they knew enough to be in hiding and avoiding going out already....its just confusing. Anyone who knew who they were could have their minds read or otherwise be interrogated. Like that old lady.
That's impossible no one could get their mind read and if they were interrogated they'd not be able to say a word even if they wanted, only, i repeat only the secret keeper could have handed 'em over and on purpose o' course
@@theb.i.gnotorious9127 I meant before the fidelius charm was applied. Harry wasn't even born when the prophecy was made, but he's 14 almost 15 months old when they go into hiding. I'm amazed it took that long for them to be put into hiding under the fidelius charm when Albus knew of the prophecy for a long time.
Harry Potter folklore is a part of my life now
OK, so I have a question regarding this letter...... Would the fact that Lily mentions to Sirius in it that Bathilda visits regularly not be a HUGE red flag that they are hiding in Godrics Hollow? Plus would this not be a big plot hole as to the fact that no other person except the Secret Keeper should be aware of the hiding place location? I feel like this does lead to a few issues as everyone seemed to know that Bathilda lived in Godrics Hollow and that there would be absolutely no reason for her to visit them at all apart from living right next to them? Just doesn't add up to me but I'm sure there is a valid magical reason that could explain this away?
Love your chanel and really enjoy all the work you do!
@Oof Oooof69 That doesn't make sense to me. The whole reason you have a secret keeper, especially in this part, is so that no one knows where they were hiding! If the secret keeper is the only one who can tell you where they are hiding, why would he have told Bathilda? And like I stated in my comment, everyone knew Bathilda as she was a famous historian and Grindlewalds Aunt and everyone knew where she lived, so if that letter was intercepted, how would the fact that Bathilda visits not lead them straight to Godrics Hollow? If you look at the rules of being a secret keeper, once the secret keeper tells you where they are, you become a secret keeper yourself and the secret dies, so no, not everyone can know where they are because in order for you to know where they are, you would have needed to be told which then means you yourself become a secret keeper. This obviously then just means that Bathilda now also becomes a secret keeper and even worse, Lily is basically telling Sirius and anyone else who reads that letter exactly who to find and torture for the information (Bathilda) and pretty much exactly where to find them (Godrics Hollow).
“Ouch.” 😂😂😂😂😂
Why didn’t they use the unbreakable vow so that wormtail wouldn’t tell of their whereabouts? Hmmmm.
Anybody have any theories as to why Lily or James were not their own secret keeper? I heard this criticism recently and I’m having a little trouble getting over it.
I think it’s mainly because they needed to keep a connection with the order one way or another, maybe they needed a secret keeper because if they were their own secret keepers, there wouldn’t be a way for them to unhide (if that makes sense), but it’s just an idea though, I have always thought the same thing.
Funny how the other kid born in July was nevil and voldi didn't even acknowledge the idea of him being the chosen one and was the one to kill nagini
Where do you find all this information about the marauders
I dont even watch harry potter that often, but im here everyday! Keep it up!

Does anyone know why they didn't see the last spell Sirius used during his duel with Peter Pettigrew. I would think that would have cleared his name? because I would assume the last spell Sirius cast during that duel wasn't a curse that killed all those muggles. Therefore clearing his name for their deaths.
He was guilty beyond doubt and didn't even get a trial. Had he gotten a trial I'm sure he would of been cleared.
I would be crazy if hpt collabed with movie flame😱
Im wondering why James wasnt the Keeper of this charm? I understand why wasnt it Sirius or Dumbledore, but why not James himself?
I guess if anyone could have snuck around Dumbledore it would have been Snape considering he too possess legitimacy so he could block Dumbledore from reading his mind so Dumbledore would never know that he was there

Am I the only one who thought Lily and Sirius had a thing? Not during James and Lily's marriage but before because they were so close whether it was a best friend thing or more I just feel like they had a different type of connection
My biggest question is where was Remus? I understand the last minute switch because Sirius was the obvious choice, but I don’t think it was very James or Lily to only have 1 back up plan. We know Sirius suggested the switch to make Peter secret keeper (which really says so much about Sirius’s locality and love for the potters) but where was Remus? He talks about being a coward a lot and he wasn’t as brave as Sirius, but it’s not like him to run away when his closest friends need him. How different the story would’ve been if Remus was around?? 🤔
He was on missions for the order

Might be a silly question but I wonder why Dumbledore wasn't made secret keeper? Even if Voldemort came after him to find out where Harry was he would've had the power to defend himself. Maybe they didn't fully trust him but he seems like a better choice than Wormtail.
But I have a confusion...in PoA, Fudge mentions that the Potters were in hiding ever since they learned about the prophecy but later when it was becoming impossible to hide from Voldemort, obviously, Dumbledore suggested them to cast the Fidelius Charm. Then within a week after the Charm was casted, the Potters were betrayed. So that means the fidelius charm must have been casted on the last week of Oct.... The letter was written way earlier...right...?
Forgive me if I'm wrong...

But I don't think that's why he wasn't chosen as the secret keeper, I think it's mainly bcuz he was a werewolf, when Dumbledore said the traitor was someone among them everyone thought it was remus, bcuz Peter appears to be dumb to do such a thing. And we can't blame sirius for suspecting remus Cuz all he cared was potter fam and potter fam only and in return remus suspected sirius was a murder

Harry Potter theory
Question. So Slytherins value blood purity, but obviously they've had half bloods in their house before. Is it possible for a muggle born to be sorted into Slytherin house, or would that be impossible?
Slytherins don’t necessarily value blood purity. The requirement for admission into Slytherin is for ambition to be their primary trait. Thats how Tom Riddle was made into a Slytherin despite his father being a muggle. It just so happens that a lot of the darker pureblood wizarding families go to Slytherin and they *do* value blood purity highly
*Fun Fact*: The only Muggle Born who was invited to join the Death Eaters was Lily Potter, and yet in that time Voldemort was endlessly killing Muggles and Muggle Borns.
That's the first time I ever heard of it.
