The Beatles are truly legendary; their influence on modern music can't be overstated. They were prolific, innovative, and edgy, always evolving & setting off into new directions for others to follow. Check out "Across the Universe", "Help", " Come Together", "Revolution", "Michelle" for samplings of some of their sounds. After the group broke up, an entire generation held out hope for a reunion...but then John Lennon was shot and killed by a deranged fan outside his New York apartment. A few years ago, George Harrison also passed away. Ringo, the drummer, and Paul McCartney both still perform today though they are now around 80 years young!

  • @rhiahlMT

Ringo Starr on drums, Paul McCartney on bass on the left, George Harrison in the middle and John Lennon on the right. John Lennon was assassinated on Dec. 8, 1980, outside his apartment building in NYC. Fans were so crazy they couldn't tour any longer. All of them good artists in their own right. Deep, deep well. This is early stuff. Yes, Ed Sullivan was the show to watch.

Are you telling us you never heard of the Beatles. They were the start of what they called ‘The British Invasion’ it was like this wherever they played. They had to be surrounded by security everywhere they went. They would have tons of girls at the airport & everywhere they went. They would tear their clothes off if they could. That is Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison. & Ringo Star. They all had solo careers after they broke up. Paul & Ringo are the only ones still alive. John Lennon was shot & killed outside his apt in New York.
Listen to Help, Here Come The Sun, Strawberry Fields, Elenor Rigby, Back in The USSR, the list is never ending.

That's why, when it comes to music and listing the best bands ever, you have
"The Beatles" alone at the top, then comes everyone else.

I can't believe you never heard of The Beatles! This was the beginning of the British Invasion of music. Their music changed as did their life style and as the hippie era began. Their sound will be different and amazing as you go through their library. I hope you do many and in order so you can see their transitions. I was 10 when they came on Ed Sullivan and jumped up & down with happiness. My Dad said their hair was too long. A couple years later he bought me a Beatle album for Christmas. Norweigan Wood, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band, A day in the Life, Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, Magical Mystery Tour, Across the Universe, Let It Be, Come Together , Back in the USSR, Helter Skelter. OMG.....I can't stop suggesting. My friends & I went to the show to see their movie A Hard Day's Night & the audience was the same as this. You couldn't hear the movie for all the screaming.

This song was so different from the do-wop and falsettos of that time. These gorgeous guys were handsome, talented, very Male, no falsettos, the Beat was strong and definite, and the end didn't fade out like all the songs of that time. Plus, it's a great song!

She is reacting to Beatles albums and singles in chronological order, and she has just worked her way up to "Sgt. Pepper's." She is fun to watch, and her angle is that she is a singer/songwriter -- she's heard so much about the Beatles that she wanted to know what all the fuss was about. Can she learn about songwriting and arranging from the Beatles? So far, she's been familiar with only a handful of songs... "With a Little Help From My Friends" was one of these very few songs. And she's had many surprises. Lots of fun! Notice also how many views she gets for Beatles videos vs. what she gets for other performers (such as ABBA). Clearly, there is a HUGE audience out there for Beatles content.

I wasn't in the audience, but I was right in front of my TV the night this was aired and watching this makes it seen like it was yesterday. You young people will never experience anything like The Beatle phenomenon because its not likely to ever happen again. It's one of those "you had to be there" moments. The crowds were insane. As a matter of fact The Beatles quit doing live performances in 1966 because the crowds were so loud that they couldn't even hear each other playing on stage. The Ed Sullivan Show was THE show. If you were an entertainer and you made it to that show, you were on the top. And if you want to hear another good song from them, just pick one. I'm still a big fan of theirs but in my opinion, they didn't make a bad song. Great reaction.

Back in the 50's and 60's, there were only a few TV channels... no cable, no internet. So everyone in America watched the same content day in, day out... Ed Sullivan Show was the prominent entertainment show that famous artists performed on.
The Beatles landed in America in early 1964 w/ a #1 record and appeared on the Ed Sullivan show... and the ratings had never been higher for any artist since. Everyone in America was watching... there r so many rock artists today who were kids when they saw the Beatles live on TV that became musicians.
Ozzy Osbourne said he saw the Beatles in the UK in the 60's and heard their records... that inspired him to become a singer in a band... he started singing in 1967 and eventually joined the band that became Black Sabbath.

This was their introduction in America and I saw a comment here that 7 million households tuned in that evening. Actually it was 73 million and still the largest audience for a TV show in history 57 years later. The shame is that John Lennon's mike (he's on the right) malfunctioned on this song, you mainly heard Paul McCartney here, he's on the far left. This was in February 1964 and I was going on six years of age and remember very clearly. In 64 these four looked and sounded like aliens too me although by today standards their hair is quite short. I was fortunate enough too see them right after I turned six in Pittsburgh at The Civic Arena, it was crazy, you could barely hear them with all of the screams. Back in those days the technology couldn't support a band like this, all they had were 25 watt amps. Could you imagine playing to like 13,000 screaming girls with only 25 watt amps. They graduated to selling out stadiums in 65 and by that time Vox made special 100 watt amps which was a joke. They were always ahead of the technology, like in the studio starting in 66 with their Lp Revolver and then in 67 with Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band they had too invent new technology as they went along. These guys were musical geniuses. The Lennon/McCartney catalog of songs will never be equalled. Greatest band ever and it ain't even close. There's so many great ones by them that's it's hard to recommend songs. I'll give you a couple of great ones though. The Beatles live at Blackpool Night Out 1965 performing "Help" really great color and sound for 65 and much superior to the Sullivan Show one. Another is the video for "Day Tripper" 1965, you'll love it and finally from their last album recorded together "Abbey Road" George Harrison's "Here Comes The Sun" with video. Make sure you do the 50th anniversary 2019 remix, it sounds incredible. This song is the most streamed by the band on Spotify with over 730 million hits. I've seen some cool stuff in my life. The Beatles and Paul, George and Ringo all solo after the band split up in 70. Bob Dylan numerous times, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Queen to name a few. More Beatles please but make sure you pause when doing them for they along with Dylan have the strictest of all copyrights, wouldn't want too see you get flagged brother. ✌️☮️💕

Okay, I seriously REFUSE to believe that this is the FIRST time that you’ve EVER heard a Beatles song!!? 🤯😱😳 it’s literally *impossible* to overstate what a critical role they played in the evolution of music and what an indelible mark these guys left on music/pop culture as a whole, not just during the years they were actively creating/releasing new music and touring, but even through today because of how they STILL inspire so many young people who turn out to be music giants. I think it was Chris Cornell actually who once said in an interview that he “considered John Lennon as more of a father figure to him than his own biological father ever was” 🥺 I’ve always thought that was such a crazy little piece of information, I suppose that is why it’s always stuck in my mind lol…I obviously can’t speak for anyone else, but I’ve ALWAYS considered Chris Cornell one of the most incredibly talented musicians, singers and songwriters of all time. What an absolute tragedy it would have been if he never took the leap into the music business because he never felt that inspiration that he got from John Lennon and the Beatles!

What is most incredible is how much THEY grew and changed in the short seven year span between 1963 and 1969 when they broke up (and broke millions of hearts in the process). Actually if you start with their first recording of Love Me Do in 1962 and then to 1970 when they broke up, that is 8 years. Keep in mind that the U.S. and the rest of the world didn't know of the Beatles until 1964. Whereas they had already been popular for 2 years in the UK and Europe. Beatlemania was already widespread before those of us in the US heard them. So the US had to play catchup seeing as "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was really not a new song, but it was to the US. But if you think of ALL the work and struggles and playing 6-8 hour sets in Hamburg, Germany from 1960-1962 off and on (where they REALLY honed their craft). They were a working band for 10 years. SO yes, 10, 8 years is an INCREDIBLY SHORT time to create what the body of work they did and ALL BEFORE they were 30 years old!! TRULY AMAZING!!! NO one else WILL EVER MATCH that!! I am 74 years old and I was exactly one month short of turning 17 when the Beatles were on ED SULLIVAN on Feb 9, 1964, I saw them live in concert here in Cleveland, Ohio on Sept 15, 1964 and again on Aug, 14, 1966 (they didn't come here in 1965 because our mayor BANNED them from coming to Cleveland!!) I was one of those screamers too, it was all so overwhelming, we LOVED them SO MUCH and it was a way of letting our emotions out and frustrations at not being able to get close to them. I am STILL an avid fan and will be to the day I die. They had a more profound affect on my life than on most, I can't imagine what my life would have been without them. They are the soundtrack of my life. My 3 sons have even said on FaceBook that they THANK their existence for the Beatles "If mom hadn't been a fan she would never have met our father, who was also a fan (very long story) ANYWAY, I am GLAD I was there during that time and I feel sad that young people today couldn't have been there. It was an AMAZING and FUN time with SO MUCH GREAT MUSIC. RIP John Lennon and George Harrison, you are greatly missed. Many more years for Paul McCartney and Richard Starkey AKA RIngo Starr. The Beatles got their stage presence by serving an "apprenticeship" playing in the clubs in Hamburg, Germany. They were very young at the time, with the oldest (John) being just 20 years old and the others in their teens. George actually got deported from Germany for working underage. They slept in a storage room and played long, long shows in the nightclubs in the seediest part of a port city. By the time they were done with that, not much was going to throw them off their playing.

They played 5 songs that night, 3 at the beginning of the show and 2 at the end. The ED SULLIVAN SHOW was a STAPLE at 8 PM SUNDAY NIGHTS from 1948 until June 1971. MOST families watched it EVERY SUNDAY, I know MINE did. It was a variety show with all kinds of different acts, something for EVERY one in the family. I was 16 the night that the Beatles were on that first show on Feb. 9th ( I turned 17 on March 9th, 1964). I WOKE up to my clock radio playing "I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND" on Dec. 26, 1963, and I sat straight up and looked at my radio and said OUT LOUD, "WHAT and WHO is THAT?!" I had never heard anything that sounded like that before and I LOVED IT! I WANTED to scream that night watching it, but my parents were also watching and my Dad kept criticizing them and saying they looked "unkept"(?) and "they look like GIRLS with THAT hair, you can't even see their eyes!" That is EXACTLY what my dad said. Boys didn't wear their hair like that back then, but they sure started emulating that style not long after, much to the dismay of many parents. I saw them LIVE IN CONCERT on Sept, 15, 1964 when I was 17 and again on Aug. 14, 1966 when I was 19. YES I SCREAMED at both those concerts, and shed some tears too. THE BEATLES look "CALM" here because they were ALREADY USED to these reactions by us teens (adult women did NOT scream and react like that) it was mostly preteens and teenagers that did. They were used to it, because they were already popular in the U.K. and Europe through out 1962 and 1963. We didn't know about them until December 1963 when "I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND" was released here in America, after that they took off and became the biggest thing EVER. You HAD to have BEEN THERE to TOTALLY "understand" the impact they had on us. You should watch Ron Howards documentary on the BEATLES TOURING YEARS called "EIGHT DAYS A WEEK: THE TOURING YEARS" and in that you will SEE the kind of reactions (called "Beatlemania") that they had from fans ALL OVER THE WORLD. ( "Eight Days a Week" was also the title of one of their over 200 songs).

Those screaming girls actually changed the world. The Beatles got sick of playing gigs that no one could hear, so they vowed to stop touring. ... Well, since they weren't touring, they could do anything they wanted to in the studio, without having to worry about how on earth they'd reproduce it on stage. The result was an exploration of sounds and techniques that forever changed the industry.

It fascinates me, people that do not know the Beatles. I was born a month after they broke up, and they were still played all the time on radio growing up. It's like never hearing of Elvis, or Robert DeNiro, or Dave Chapelle.
    This isn't a criticism, it's just amazing...and I'm glad you found them.
My hometown rock station, had the "Two Hour Beatles Hour" at 10:00 AM every Saturday. That was 1987-1989.
A song that came out with one of their re-releases is "Real Love". The Beatles version (after John's death) was a hit, but the artist Regina Spektor did a cover that honestly makes me tear up. Not only were the Beatles the best rock combination of all time, there are so many wonderful covers of their tunes that I never tire of.

This program is known in the archives of the 20th Century as one of those "Where were you when..." situations. It was considered the biggest TV audience of all time; something like 73 million viewers, nationwide. There are many documentaries filmed and books written about this time in American/British and world history because The Beatles truly were -- and still are -- a world-wide phenomenon. "Beatlemania" swept the globe between 1964 and 1967. After that, The Beatles and their audience grew up and became more a big part of the larger culture but during those 3 years, especially, they dominated world culture! Check out a song by them called "Help!", written in 1965. It was composed by John Lennon in response to all the fame and insanity that surrounded him and his band, day and night, for several years, at that point. It's a great song and The Beatles are not just a great band, they are the best Rock/Pop band of all time!
