The Beatles sang this on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964. All the girls were glued to the tv including me. It was a much simpler time - holding hands!! But it was a brand new sound at the time.
I remember the day, me and my 2 sisters were thrilled
The night I fell in love with Paul! Squueeeee! ❤️
FYI, Chicago radio station WLS was the 1st station to play the Beatles, it was Please Please Me in late Feb. 1963 almost 1yr before the Ed Sullivan show.
My parents seriously did not understand my hysteria while I was watching them. I was 15. They thought I’d lost my mind. English boys with hair. Lolol Great memory.
And they were also glued to their seats with a little help from a special substance...
They were so young. Ringo, the oldest, was 23. George, the youngest, was 20. We were so young. I was 12. This is the song that launched the Beatles in the US. Those of us who grew up with them are so blessed. It's wonderful to see a younger generation discovering them. Love your reactions.
My mom had to hide her “meet the Beatles” album from her dad!
I was 12 too and did whatever I needed to do to listen to their music...
I think I was about 6!
I was 7. My mom let me and my brothers stay home from church to watch them. My favorite song was She Loves You. It was great being a kid when the Beatles hit. Everybody our age loved them.
The Beatles did more for music then any other band at the time
Back, way back, when this came out it was revolutionary. Still remember people saying they ruined the song by "screaming" in it. But the real screaming was the young girls in the audience. Ringo was on the drums.
I agree. I was stuck renovating something for a week as the BBC played (at night) music over the years and it was sorta interesting as they told stories too - but after 4 days of this, on the fifth when the Beatles arrived it was something else - totally different- l can see how they hooked a nation/western world.
Yeah, I remember hearing "they're not singing, they're just screaming" a lot.
This song was like nothing we ever heard before when it was releaased. This song and they changed the world and their influence is still felt today.
Picture this, I’m 5 years old and sitting on the floor of my family room with my sister and 3 brothers, my mom and dad, who by the way were super conservative, watching Ed Sullivan. The Beatles come on we are instantly hooked (all except my dad), even my mom! The beginning of my love for rock and roll! So glad you enjoyed it.
Yep, this same scenario was repeated all across America!
I was 6 years old, seated on the living room floor, glued to the TV. It was nothing we had even seen or heard before. I was hooked too!
For some reason It made me tear up a little. What a beautiful memory.
When my dad heard “Do You Want To Know A Secret” he disdainfully asked me “What does “Do dah do” mean. What kind of silly lyrics are those?” He was a big Jazz fan. He gradually came to appreciate some of their music later on, though.
I believe they played this in front of 70 Million on America's Ed Sullivan Show and a music revolution from solo singers was born :)
Beatles/I Saw Her Standing There
Great one !👍
Also ‘ Twist and Shout ‘
This one really gets the party started! (as the kids from 20 years ago would say)
the birth of beatles. 1,2,3,4.......
My Mom went to a Beatles concert where she was so close she could touch their legs in front of her she said. I can picture my Mom. Makes me smile. She also saw Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, Lynard Skynard, Elvis - her list is HUGE! She was a concert girl & would travel in those little VW busses to them.
So cool! Reminds me of that movie "Almost Famous."
@@etc7070 oh wow!! You just named one of my favorite movies of all time. I almost watched it again tonight. When Jay starts back with movies I'd like him to see it. Amazing film.
@Luna Raven Me too!! Pretty sure she was whacked outta her mind on drugs for half of it!! 🤣 But! Her memories are solid. Videos on YT are as close as I can get to a time machine. Grateful for them! ❤
@@jennhurl Yes! It's a must-see for fans of the whole classic rock era. I haven't watched it too many times and it's been a while since I last saw it, but it gets all my emotions going. When I was a teenager I wanted to write for Rolling Stone magazine (back when it still meant something, haha), so that kid's gig was a dream come true. Plus, I used to have a group of friends who I'd go on little trips with to follow our favorite band, so I identified with being a "band aid." Good times. I can only imagine the good times and great stories your mom had!
I was just going to say you look like Kate Hudson. I hope your mom wasn't like Goldie Hawn in The Banger Sisters 😂
The beginning of Beatlemania.❤️❤️❤️❤️ When they came to America. Check out Ed Sullivan show performance.
The few minutes they were on the Ed Sullivan show, was the lowest recorded theft in America, the robbers stopped to watch em.
@@dannyjones8602 fascinating. Thanks for the info
@@natashaabdurahman4026 That’s true. The crime rate went way down because all of the teenagers were at home watching them on The Ed Sullivan Show. It remained the most watched tv program for years. Of course, with increased population you get more and more people tuning in to watch tv. There were roughly a little under 191 million people in the USA in 1964. More than a third of them tuned in to watch that show.
That was Ringo on the drums fine sir. Also, this was their first number one song in America. They found out while they were on tour in France. They celebrated by having a pillow fight.
This was one of my Mom’s favourite songs. She used to sing it to me all the time, which at the time as a young kid I found totally cringeworthy. She passed away when I was 13, and it wasn’t until years later that I finally appreciated The Beatles. I like to think of her bopping around as a teenager freaking out to this song.
I love how they do short songs that you don’t get bored of and leave you wanting more
You can never ever have too much Beatles! Absolutely fantastic song, from this then young group! And the rest, as they say is history!
I WAS IN THE SHOWER WHEN THEY CAME ON ED SULLIVAN SHOW AND I NEARLY BROKE MY NECK TRYING TO HURRY AND SEE WHO THEY WERE. BIG FAN.
Marvellous
amazing.
How could you not have known they were going to appear on the Sullivan show that night? That’s all kids talked about in my school for days leading up to the event.
1963 Aged 8 in Cowley Street, South East London attending my Dad's firms' Christmas Party. I remember having 2 portions of jelly and ice cream and them playing this newly released song 58 years ago....:)
I'm quite partial to jelly and ice cream
Yes, Yvette but I didn't ask or want a second portion unlike my last visit to a Hospital in 1960 when I was just 6 and had my tonsils out and they promised me 2 portions and I only received just one portion. I've held that against The NHS for the last 61 years because of that, not, of course, that I am one to harbour a grudge, you understand:)
@@Isleofskye heaven forbid Oliver
I was bought up in S E London too, we used to have Rossis ice cream they had a little place in East Street market. I was 3 when this song was a hit, my sisters were teenagers, I remember them dancing around to this with their beehive hairdos..mum didn't approve. I actually got a bit teary listening to this reaction lol!
@@susangarvey9415 lovely memory
One of my Daddy's favorites God Bless His Soul 🥰✌️🕊️☮️
"And when I touch you I feel happy inside..." that shift of tone and atmosphere is so nice; and quite sexy, too. One of my first favorites from these boys!
What's hard to imagine is a band that started with hits like this and transformed themselves (and all of popular music with them) over the course of the next 7 years, releasing groundbreaking albums only a few months apart from each other. Now some of my favorite bands wait *years* in between albums.
This is the song that finally broke them in America..they would go from this to Strawberry fields in 3 years
Anything by the Beatles gets me going. Twist and Shout is a great party starter. Give it a try Jay.😁👍🎶❤️
This was the song that got me into the Beatles in the first place. Solid reaction my guy.
My mother still remembers where she was the first time she heard this song. She was in high school and waitressing on the weekends, and one day someone in the diner turned up the radio and conversation died down as everyone was distracted by this new and distinctive sound. She always has an odd expression on her face when she tells that story, and I've always figured it's the same look she had that day.
That describes their impact perfectly. There wasn’t anyone who sounded quite like them. They were very distinctive, and that’s something you can’t buy with all the gold in Fort Knox. People who grew up after that era really don’t understand that, because we have become so accustomed to hearing either them, or music that has been influenced by them, but when they first appeared that was not the case. If anyone doesn’t believe that, go back and check out what was popular on the Billboard charts prior to The British Invasion, in general, and The Beatles, in particular.
You know a song is bangin when Jayvee asks, "Did it have to end so soon?"
I have to say that even though this song is a little before my time, in my later years I dove into The Beatles and developed full on Beatlemania. I think you'll enjoy the many treasures of the Beatle catalogue. Some of my favorites are "Penny Lane", "Eleanor Rigby", "Help!", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Yesterday".
#1....I was 12 when came out!!! Blew us all away!!! 💜💜💜🤘🎶🎵🎧🎤🎸🎼
Me too! I made my brother and father promise not to talk while they were singing on Ed Sullivan.
@@aslansown yep I remember telling everyone to shut up!!!🤣🤣🤣
@@marcieharreld286 Amazingly they actually were quiet!!!
@@aslansown so was my mom...she actually learned to like them!! Wonders never cease!!😉😉
All of America went crazy when The Beatles came to America. I watched them live on The Ed Sullivan Show as did the whole country.
Canada went bonkers too.
The early stuff is very different but no less awesome, simple songs and lyrics, oh so catchy, They were made to sing and dance to. After all, this is what made them superstars to start with.
I appreciate the artistry they pursued later, but the early stuff is what makes me happy. I figure both are important.
@@04beni04 Absolutely! A lot of those songs were written when they were teens, which is the lighter tone, yet still way beyond what anyone else was doing
I was preschool age when this was made, and so I often had to hold hands, so not romantically but practically, this was an early favorite, with a catchy hook and clapping.
I was born in the 70’s. Being born and raised in the same city as the Beatles was a right of passage. My Dad regularly attended the Cavern and it’s lovely listening to his stories about them and their earlier years. So many excellent songs!!!
Too young to make the "Cavern" when the Beatles were around, but did go later, till it closed in '73! Sometimes, can't believe these musical gods, were from Liverpool
@@steve55sogood16 We’re so lucky!
More BEATLES!! And the early stuff! 😎 Groovy, JayveeTV!
I remember when they were on ed Sullivan show the first time they did this. You should have seen the girls go crazy! Great memories.
When The Beatles played this on Ed Sullivan so many people watched it on TV the US recorded their lowest crime rate that night. It was a new sound.
Wow
I think something like 1/4 of the US population was watching
Ticket to ride,my favourite of the 60s era
Such wonderful, guitar/drums/vocals-driven Pop-Rock! They were busy taking over the world with songs like this!
As a little girl I was so excited to see them on tv
Ah, the early 60's, a first date..sitting in the back row at the cinema hoping he will hold your hand..we were so young an innocent, in the twilight years now and enjoying you bringing back these memories.
This song was state of the art in 1964, and it sounds similar to pop / rock from the 50s. But pop / rock was substantially different by 1967, where it starts to have a sound that is still relevant today.
The Beatles crammed like a decade's worth of musical evolution into every year of the 1960s!
@@BlameThande Well, they weren't alone. The whole musical generation advanced remarkably.
@@SG-js2qn it also helps that the 60's was a time of cultural metamorphosis
It’s good to listen to early Beatles. You’ll appreciate them even more. The girls loved when they sang those high notes.
This was the third or fourth Beatle song I ever heard back when I was a kid and Beatlemania was exploding. "She Loves You" was the song that turned me on to them and this one continued the magic along with its flipside, "I Saw Her Standing There." Up till then, no music had ever affected me like that. It activated pleasure centers in my brain that I didn't even know I had and I craved it like an addict.
Great choice! Amazing what they did as young as they where!
You talk about how much their sound changed over the years. Just two years after this was recorded, they'd start working on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Both Rubber Soul and Revolver would be released in between the two. The Beatles were MASTERS of quickly evolving thru styles, getting continuously better along the way.
This was recorded in 1963
Try 4 years but I agree with everything else
I love their early stuff.
I love all of it. The Beatles will never die
Released in the US on December 26, 1963...got to #1 on the Cashbox charts on January 25, 1964...and Billboard on Feb.1, 1964...and The Beatles NEVER looked back!!!
This is their first American hit when the U.S. was the rock/pop marketplace. The beginning of Beatlemania. RINGO is the drummer!
Real hand clapping with no auto tune haha ;) and Ringo’s (Richard Starkey) is on the drums.
"You've got to hide your love away"
A time of more innocence, JAY! Thatd be Ringo on drums!
The sound we are talking about here is: 4 instruments, 3 singers, live, 2 track studio,
recorded in Mono. Stereo and 4 track recording was not invented yet. Ringo Star was
on the drums. They started out in 1962 looking for the "new beat", and they found it.
All the copy cat Beatles groups music was then called "Beat Music".
@@willzimjohn yep, in fact it was the Beatles first 4 track recording.
Great reaction! I learned to appreciate their early stuff long after I saturated myself with their later music.
My mother remembers exactly where she was and what she was doing the moment that she heard this song for the very first time. She says that she had never heard anything like it before in her entire life. She says that she LOST HER MIND. It was the beginning of rock n roll. Its pretty mind blowing to think about that now . Hard to wrap my brain around. 🎸🎙❤
Awwww...Jay! Huge Beatles fan and " I Wanna Hold Your Hand" is a top 5 favorite Beatles songs! Thank you SO much for reacting!
Love from San Antonio
My mom and dad can both remember where they were when they first saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show performing this very song. My mom and her sisters went nuts as she says. Even my non English speaking grandparents knew this was something major! The Beatles are the most incredible musicians ever! My mom gave me her first three original Beatles albums and I cherish them. Thanks for the reaction Jay! ❤️
I never get bored listening to The Beatles.
My parents saw The Beatles live in Australia in 1964. I grew up with this music & still love it
I was 16 when I heard this for the first time in 1963. Saw them in person in 1966. . I’m still a fan.
Hi Jay, I never grew up with The Beatles, but after listening to them in my late teens soon realised that they were the greatest. Keep 'em coming 👍
Love that you've done a reaction to this! My all time favourite Beatle song is, 'I saw her standing there'. It never fails to make me jiggle around, haha.
The Beatles were a Liverpool “skiffle” band, that went to Hamburg, where they performed so much they became something unique.
Any music that makes you SMILE is great music! On April 4th, 1964, the Beatles held the top FIVE songs on Billboard's Top 100. This one was number four.
Ahhh! The first Beatles song I remember my mom playing for me because she was a Beatles fan as a kid. Always one of my FAVES of theirs!!!! You can’t go wrong with this one! THANK YOU!
You REALLY need to watch “across the universe” because this song is sung super slow and the girl who sings it has a beautiful voice!!!!
I was a high school freshman when I watched their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Most of you aren't old enough to known what a big deal that show was. It was an experience. That's for bringing back the memory.
This is the song that saved rock n roll music, when those power chords hit it's all over.
Takes me right back to youth club on Friday night. I was 14, and I'm 71 now, and it still has that same excitement. It was one of my mum's favourite songs as well, happy days.
This was just a fun, feel good song! My parents actually bought me my first album, from the Beatles in 1964, when I was only 6 years old. I played that thing on my tiny portable record player for many years. I can't believe I gave that album away when I went to college--would be worth money now!
I was in Grade 8 when the Beatles hit in America. It was instantaneous for realization that they changed everything in popular music at that time. They hit like a tsunami for which we had nothing comparable to compare them with. They recorded mostly their own compositions then delivered them with wonderful harmony. Here we are 60 years later and much of their music survives as standards passed on thru families. In fact, I know kids in 2021 who will tell you Beatles music is their favorite. Even though they were born long afterwards in our current century. In the interim there have been many wonderful groups, singers, songwriters but in my 70 years enjoying rock music the Beatles are the top of pop in a very competitive genre.
Back then it was hard for me to remember all the words to songs but this one was so simple it didn't matter if you were off key.
The Beatles 5th member, their producer George Martin, was instrumental in that Beatles sound later on in their career and really made the band what it was.
Ringo is on the drums! When I was 12, the Beatles came to the U.S. to be on the Ed Sullivan show (1964). We all went nuts for them. As well, we grew up with the Beatles... their music changed from the sweet, harmonius 'I WANT TO HOLD YOU HAND' to 'COME TOGETHER', 'SOMETHING', 'OH! DARLING', and 'I WANT YOU'... and so many, many more. I'm 68-years-old now and STILL LOVE the Beatles.
You hear their voices being so young , lovely 😍!!! The beginning of a new era in pop music... Please react to more Beatles, like 'She loves you' 💜✌🏻
Can you imagine hearing this when it was first released. Nothing prepared us for the ride we were about to start. Magical band
I was a preteen when the Beatles became popular. It was similar to how my mother felt about Elvis.
Memorie lane wene you can undestand every word thay sing and you can dance to the music good old days
Please, Jayvon, more more Beatles! "Sexy Sadie", "Two of us", "Across the universe"
When I was a kid in the 70s I used to sit in my room with the lights out and listen to Beatles records all night.
The Beatles were the Masters of the hand clap! They use it in so many songs, and it always works. Even as far as the newest video for 'Here Comes The Sun' from Abbey Road in 1969, you can see they focus on the shadow of hand claps against a speaker. They just knew how to put songs together perfectly.
I love how your reactions are like a focus group trying a new product. Future opportunities coming your way? Cookies, headphones, everything else. If I'm ever in Virginia, meeting up with you would be awesome.
It's said of the Beatles they struck a gong so pure we are still hearing the reverberations today.
Can you imagine how huge this was at the time in 1964??? Finally, after trying so hard to get a no.1 in the US, they conquered after rejection after rejection from the American music companies. They also toured here, Australia, that year. My mother in law got to see them at Sydney airport. She was 20 at the time. Apparently, it was one of the most exciting things she's ever experienced
The first time the Beatles reached #1 was in England with a song called "Please, Please Me". Someday i hope you'll do a reaction to that song.
This blew everyone away in 1964. What a amazing time to be a kid growing with this music !!
They were so huge in Malaysia too.i still remember them when I was a kid.
This is how we fell in love in 1964, USA. Magic
Ringo on the drums. Actually, it was a time of 1 snare drum, 1 Tom-Tom, and 1 Bass Drum with a High Hat and 1 or 2 Symbols. Today a drummer needs an 18 wheeler to deliver his drum set to where the band will play.
The vocal ability of John & Paul is INCREDIBLE.
I was like three when I remember holding on to someones hand and hearing this song and loving it. I thought, here I am holding your hand. I always think of that. Such an early song, one of their first and it's so great.
I had just turned 4 when this came out in America, and it is the FIRST song that I actually remember in my lifetime. It is a testament to the unadorned genius of the Beatles.
this was the first song they sang on the ed sullivan show when they "invaded america" and they sang 3 songs but this is the first one. it is the one that put them on the map. also, a little note, i am 47 and 2 years ago i had my first ever real girlfriend, she was amazing and the very best. we used to sing songs together with songson her phone, and this one we sang the most, but sadly she passed away last august. i think about her every day even though i only knew her for only just over 1 year. but this made me think of her which is so very wonderful.
I think it was "All My Loving"
This was the song that introduced the Beatles to America. I was 10 years old at the time and will never forget the first time I heard it.
You're right jayvee. I'm 63 years old enjoy beatles all my like.they definitely grew with age and kept up with the times,i like how you can tell which bands they inspired (like E L O ) among others. I was very fortunate to grow up during these times . Iheard the beginning of hip hop to rap, rock to alternative ,country and everything in between
They came out of a couple of years being a Club Band ! So really dynamic !
I had the 45 RPM. The start of it all!
The first that put them on the charts. My first introduction to the Beatles, no turning back
In 1964, this was The Beatles' very first hit in America and it rocketed to #1, which led to Beatlemania and another nineteen #1 hits, along with another 28 top 10 hits in six years. To be fair, their last #1 hit came many years later, when the surviving members took an old, unreleased song of John's and reworked the backing tracks with his vocals on top. Another early hit you should react to is the iconic "A Hard Day's Night" which has the most famous opening chord in music history. Definitely.
Can’t help but sing along with the harmonies whenever I hear this!!!
Ringo is always on the drums 😄. Looooove The Beatles!!!! 🥰🥰🥰
I love this. Simple, but genius. Classic and timrless... and pure joyful FUN!
The only thing i got to say that this, is... i love them so much, i love this song, them are my favorite band ❤
The Beatles, will live for ever, my G-Kids sing there songs, today. 🏴🇬🇧🍀✌️
Loved your review! These four lads accidentally got so many things right when they first started, then purposely got it right ever since. Four distinct voices, four distinct styles of music and personalities. That's what made them #1.
This was the beginning. So simple but revolutionary. The industry took off from there!
