He shouldn't have been waving that .45 around like that, firearm safety includes generals too. As an officer, he should have had a holster or a shoulder rig for that weapon. During WWII, Eisenhower for example, never carried a sidearm; he was never in a situation that would have warranted it and Ike always avoided pretentious behavior.

My Dad was in Patton's Third Army, 4th Armored Division during WWII and he used to watch this all of the time. Because he watched it, us kids watched it too. And when I became a parent, my daughter watched it also! I know most of the lines by heart and so does my daughter. One time I was watching this with my brother in law while the kids played on the front room floor. My nine year old daughter had her back to the TV screen when Oddball came on and was asking about getting the bridge. My daughter repeated every word Oddball said while playing with her doll. My brother in law looked at me like WTF? I just shrugged and said she really likes this movie! 😂

Apparently, Landis' local guide laughed at the yokels and told Landis to pay them no mind, they were just ignorant, superstitious peasants -- which got Landis to thinking "yeah, but what if they actually knew something we didn't?"

There was a novelization of the movie; the theme song, "Burning Bridges" was in the top-40 and Kelly had been an officer in Sicily, until his unit took over a monastery with a wine cellar. After they were sloshed, they got orders to take one of the 3 surrounding hills, but the message was garbled. So they had a good buzz, and they attacked and took the 3 hills, one of which was an American paratrooper unit. So Kelly wasn't an officer any more. Awesome film, and great to see all them stars in an ensemble cast film while they were in their prime.

Rose McGuinn Not an engineer either but in WWII, they used British made Bailey bridge, prefabbed in 10 foot sections that were pinned together (big iron pins sledge hammered in place) and mounted on pontoons. They’d build it right alongside the damaged bridge rather than try to repair destroyed bridges. The bridge deck sections and pontoons were carried in truck convoys and as in the flick, these convoys often got delayed by any number of causes-bad roads, German attacks, refugees going the other way, etc. A Bridge Too Far shows in detail how WWII soldiers would do this, and it takes time Kelly’s Heroes don’t have.
