  • So that's it -- I there's nowhere I can legally fly an RC plane, drone or FPV any more. The South Waikato District Council tells you one thing but refuses to give me the same assurances in writing so I'm simply grounded.
I've had over 60 years of joy from this hobby and I'd hoped for a few more but that is clearly not going to be the case. The general apathy within the RC community has sealed the fate of the hobby and I'm just another victim of that.
Sorry guys... I did my best but I just expected too much of others.
And a HUGE heartfelt thanks to those few who did take the time to send off those emails to the council. It's just a shame that this council is a group with zero ethics, morals or honesty and who won't be swayed by a few dozen emails they are now going to ignore.

If they can't show you law for the requirements they are imposing on you, ignore them. Fly until you're arrested (which may never happen). Any arrest for breaking a nonexistent law, is grounds for a major lawsuit for false arrest. Talk to an attorney to confirm this. Don't give up to bullies who have no law to support their actions against you.
They can't "legally" stop you from flying (as you've stated), if there is no law stopping you. Go fly.

While outsider's wishes should not override those who live there, there are no problems getting involved. As I travel around my part of NZ and read council regulations on drones, it seems a bit of copy-paste-modify goes on with these policies. So, a win (even less of a loss) in one jurisdiction could have a wider effect. That aside, pushing back on encroachments to our freedoms is part of a wider battle against our transformation into a permission-first society. Can I even say that? Better ask mummy council.

Bought up in a time and place in the world when ethics and empathy actually meant something and "for the common good" was a concept that people not only understood but honoured and were willing to back it with not only their words, not even only their actions but indeed their very lives. Unfortunately the past few years have made it absolutely crystal clear that most people only care about themselves and couldn't really give a crumpet about the rest of the world. Is there such a licence available in NZ? How do you qualify for one, how much does it cost and how long does it take?

Seems to me the answer is:
    a) rejoin MFNZ to be able to fly LoS at the airfield (or FPV with a spotter if available)
    b) Fly FPV for your own pleasure and don't publish the videos ... noone's coming to your house to watch your Whoop around the garden.
Funnily enough Bruce this is exactly what I do - I barely ever have a spotter ... so I just keep it under wraps and keep myself to myself.

This exactly. Half this issue is that of your own making tbh Bruce. If you've kept your head down, stayed quiet and just kept on flying at the airfield, they would never have noticed.
I've followed you and subbed for literally best part of 10 years, even though Xjet has become more of a rant channel than a flying channel. I'll admit I never got a chance to send an email to your council, I work a 65 hour week, I didn't have time, but as others state, why are the council going to listen to someone in the UK way outside their voting area. They won't, I can't effect their chances of re-election. I'm no threat in the slightest.
Being accused of not caring about the hobby really stabbed me in the back Bruce. Way to go to anger some of your backers. Have I tried, yes of course I have. I've emailed my own MPs, the CAA in Britain etc and complained about all of these regulations. What happened... stone wall silence, most didn't even acknowledge the letters. The few that did reply basically said UAV pilots are a minority and they really don't care, because I don't have enough power to threaten their position.
I'm still flying, way out in the hills in the North of Scotland, easily 50 miles from the nearest cop, noone knows I'm here, there's no data signal to give my location away, and I keep safe by checking in with the RAF to make sure there's no low flying exercises that day.
Keep your head down and no-one will bother you.
Unfortunately you decided to poke the bear, and you're paying the price now by having your livlihood being taken away from you.

I'm guessing that this lack of support may have been the result of people either not having the time to promptly write to the council (due to life circumstances), or they may not have had a clear idea as to what to say. Or perhaps it was apathy, and the belief that a fight with public servants (i.e. the council) was bound to be futile 🤷🏻‍♂️
In my case, I prepared a draft, but was unable to get on with it, due to other issues I had to deal with. I've been regulated out of the hobby too, Bruce. I refuse to get any RID and put myself at risk in the crap area I live in. FPV is the only thing that helps me with my disability. Now that the FAA has regulated that away from me, I am falling back to where I was before I started FPV; it is not a good place. I will be lucky to last a year without FPV.
I have fought for this hobby as well since the FAA spoke of getting rid of 336. That was about the time I got back into RC. I left because of the horrible people and now I am being forced out because of the weak, horrible, narcissistic people that have no balls, empathy or common sense.
Millennials and gen Z care about two things: 1. Themselves. 2. Causing problems for everyone.
As for the AMA members and the like, they fall into the same category.
And then there is nearly every single youtuber in the RC aviation and FPV spectrum; they all licked the boots of the tyrants and got their "sweet little RID modules".

Public Places Bylaw is probably now the 2022 version. Apart from trespass and a flying ban, enforcement comes from the Local Government Act 2002. Let's see... actually pretty limited. Unlikely they could legally seize the drone, trespass, and a ban looks to be the worst of it, though maybe a fine to remedy damage/nuisance.

Ive been flying rc planes here in Ireland since May 1986 and its a great hobby for sure. But governments are destroying and spoiling everything for us and taking away our enjoyment of something we love dearly and which is a big part of our lives. All through the years , from the 1950s up until recently , model flyers have always took responsibility and looked after their own safety when operating their model aircraft. Why can they the governments of the world not just leave us all in peace to get on with enjoying our hobby. We didn't need any of these rules and restrictions in the past and we certainly dont need them now in our lives. Its all about control and money and Bruce you have always spoken the truth and let the people know how we all are having the wool pulled over our eyes. Its just utterly depressing of the type of world we are living in now. We have never done anyone harm and our hobby of flying model aeroplanes is a good honest wholesome and innocent pursuit that also lets people of all ages take up what is a very unique hobby. I hope Bruce that we do see you and the boys flying again at the airfield. I really do.

Personal beef? Did Bruce step on your dick?
Historically, "professional victims" have been those who fight tyranny...for themselves yes, but also to the benefit of the compliant and complacent sheep plodding along to the slaughterhouse.
Bruce is an educator, an entertaining and knowledgeable one...who does his research (sharing it unselfishly).
Sadly, it's mostly taken for granted...or dismissed/ignored by the good (compliant) sheep distracted with their pursuit of "wealth," comfort, convenience, and entertainment.
Bruce's battle is a microcosm of the Western world's fall...it's descent into the intended serfdom of the "conspiracy theory" Great Reset. This isn't the first great reset in history...
Bruce is a proverbial "canary in the coal mine," a harbinger of the "frog in the kettle" deception most live.
That (from the beginning) deception? It's a 3D evil...Distract, Divert, DIVIDE (and conquer); to which we (seem addicted to) succumb.
What a blessing COVID has been...revealing the "success" of that deception. There's an old hymn, "Trust and Obey"...the Wisdom and Truth of "fearing" God alone.
Instead, we have vividly seen that admonition applied to government alone.
Don't surrender Bruce...it's always a remnant of "professional victims" who've borne the burden of fighting tyranny; keeping the hope of freedom and liberty alive.
To your detractors, "Good luck to you mate. Take care."

Before you potentially abuse me, don't you think you should hear my side of the story? I have an equally debilitating nerve disorder as Parkinson's, but you don't know about that okay-about a month ago. Bruce told one of the other very beloved guys at the field a very serious pack of lies that resulted in me getting a very abusive phone call that put me in a very bad place for the better part of three days. The beloved person rang me the next day and apologised emphatically, but the damage had been done, and from that four weeks ago, Bruce destroyed the atmosphere at the field because of what he did. He was told he needed to call me to sort it out and instead of giving me a ring to apologise. His response to the people that spoke to him was his typical narcissistic brushoff, and not so pleasant comments so I waited for three weeks. I tried to call him. He wouldn't take my calls, so I put a takedown request in.
Any Normal person at that point would have contacted me and said "Hey dude, WTF?" And we could have sorted it there and then and I would've removed the takedown request straight away, but Bruce being Bruce decided the best course of action was not to talk to me because that meant he had to eat humble pie, instead, he came here, and he started to make things worse by dragging my name through the dirt even more, so I put a second takedown request in, but not before I had tried to ring him again and again, he would not answer his phone. I have since removed the second takedown request because I don't want to see his channel shutdown. However, do you think Bruce gives a flying fuck about anybody else's health and the damage he does to other people when he lies like he does? You guys just see what he wants you to see you. Don't see the damage He does off camera, you're not here in NZ dealing with the fallout. Every time he has a totally unnecessary argument with one of the local authorities over something he's usually usually brought on himself just like he brought these takedown requests on himself.. he could have totally avoided all of this drama, but because he thrives on drama, he decided to make it worse.
In this case Bruce is suffering karma as a result of his own actions, I don't wish any harm on him. I was the first person he told about his Parkinsons because most likely he knew I would understand better than most because I've had my own very debilitating nerve disorder for a lot longer than he's had Parkinsons I've spent numerous weeks in hospital hooked up to a Academy infusion because of stress from things like reading comments like yours for example, anything that triggers the nervous system (as Bruce has found out with Parkinson's) put your body in seven kinds of hell. Bruce to this day still has not apologised for the damage. He did a month ago, however I'm told he's going to talk to me because he knows he needs to, and I'm not going to be the one who has his channel shutdown. He could have prevented all of this, but instead, he chose to make drama out of everything and make it worse because drama gets clicks. so I would appreciate it if you would spend a bit more time reading the comments where I've already gone over this 1000 times with people and explained to them the whole story like I have to you now. I didn't deserve the treatment I got from Bruce, i've also told him repeatedly for the last eight years and it's been repeated to him on a weekly basis by all the other guys at the field. He is not to video me under any circumstances unless I give him my express permission at the time and this is all because of my nerve disorder I don't want him sticking the camera in my face. I don't want him making me looking like an idiot. I don't want to be in his videos. I go to the field to hang out with the guys not to be cannon fodder for his channel. Bruce has never respected anybody's requests for privacy and I've let it go for eight years even though it's put me through hell a few times having to deal with the stress of him and his camera not to mention the stress of all the other drama he's caused which has ended up affecting all of us, but all you hear is Bruce crying Wolf and complaining, how nobody locally helps him. Maybe we would if he had a bit more respect for all of us.

Hi Bruce, As you have said that membership of MFNZ is not required under CAA Part 101. what it says is:
    A) is the holder of, or is under the direct supervision of the holder of, a pilot qualification issued by an approved person or organisation; or
    (B) is under the direct supervision of a person appointed to give instruction in the operation of remotely piloted aircraft by an approved person or organisation; or (C) is the holder of a pilot licence or certificate issued under Part 61 or Part 149.
So you can still fly at the airfield under "direct supervision." E.G. Ron who I believe is a MFNZ member. They can't prosecute you for following CAA Part 101 rules. Let them point out to a magistrate or judge where the requirement of membership of MFNZ is stated in the CAA Part 101 rules.

Very sad to hear news about your situation. Keep fighting and stay strong 💪. I feel like you are my grandfather every time i watch your videos.
Been regular viewer since 2016, was 19yo at that time, when our country introduced local regulations. Just year before that, i bought myself first 3D extra style airplane. Been learning 3D tricks like knife edge, harrier, hover, KE spin, etc. Was hyped and motivated. Participated in learning sessions with chief of local RC modelling club. Year later he advised me to put personal information sticker on my plane. For a reminder... Sticker was free to print, no renewal fees and no sticker was required for models lighter that 500 grams. Also no licensing requirements back then. I didn't put sticker on my plane, because shortly after i came across something very depressing... That was EASA introduced regulations document. Reading this document was so depressing and unreal. In year 2017 model flying was actually completely banned because rules were not sorted (excuse). I still went on field flying my 1.7 kg airplane lol. How dare i, naughty boy 🤪. Later in 2018 after doing a deeper research on regulations i discovered that there was no distinction drawn between model aircraft and drones. Been watching rotor riot episodes and been blaming drone users for regulations. I thought drones were as simple that you just plug battery in and take off. Then I 've build myself 6inch quad and realized there is a huge difference between DJI style camera drones and DIY quads. This really changed my look on the hobby.
Then because of only bad news like RID announcement, military use of hobby drones, EU import duty threats, digital markets act with possible import ban, China export ban, etc. i have been massively stockpiling parts i don't actually need yet, but just to feel safe in this hobby because i have plans to regularly fly for the next 20 years or so. My planes now collect dust because FPV quads offer better flying experience, are much more portable, don't need airfield and are faster to get you in the air. I still didn't obtain any drone related licenses. I don't have motivation to get any. The future of hobby is uncertain. No new youngsters in the hobby. Main reason are regulations. Specifically obstacles like license and things like BVLOS being illegal. Youngsters rather prefer gaming and most i know do vaping, drugs or alcohol. We will soon have marihuana legalized. I have a feeling the world turned upside down. People like you and Louis R. give me faith that there are still people with common sense in this globe.
My motivation to build a career is at low levels because of tyranny laws like drone law. I have studied for mechanical technician. Why? Soon to own CNC machine or any other powered tool you will have to register it and to operate lawnmower will require having a license. That is not conspiracy theory. NYC plan is to start background checks for 3D printer purchases. I can't imagine living in nanny state, owning nothing and be happy (sad). I would rather commit. Such tyrant laws castrate boys remotely. Arnold S. was right about raising generation of wimps. Men are not men anymore. Very sad. I also don't wanna make kids who would suffer in world full of tyrants, Kevins and Karens. I hope and pray things will get better and that there is still light shining at the end of the tunnel. You know we say "hope dies last". For me doing rogue flying is the only way for now. Fly safe and responsible 👍

Bruce, don't make your viewers responsible for your problems. You live in a country where you have allowed the weakest among you to make the rules, and you all continue to vote for that. Me not taking action because you asked for it, when you did this to yourself (literally) is not the same as me not caring about the hobby.
Personally, I care a great deal about the hobby. I build and fly, and am on the executive board of my local RC club. A club that is bringing many new younger people into this hobby every year.
Sorry about your plight, but you did this to yourself.

In the U.K. the ombudsman can investigate councils actions on it seems a wider basis than New Zealand, however I believe that maladministration as well as committee decisions can be challenged via the NZ ombudsman ? Surely the lies and absolute maladministration of the workings of the council must leave some area for challenge via the NZ ombudsman ?
It seems so corrupt otherwise !

Bruce, the only suggestion I have is comtinue to fly safely as you have been, regardless of what the council say, as long as you follow the CAA rules I don't see an issue.
If the council want to pursue a legal case against you, then so be it, they will look silly in court when you show them you are following the CAA rules.
If not we'll bake a RC plane shaped cake with a file inside and send it to where ever they lock you up!! 😁😲😳👍

I share the same feelings as others in that I felt an email from another nation might seem a bit off base, but I very much sympathize with you're predicament. Being that there is no actual law backing up the council's letter, would there be grounds to sue the council for infringement on your rights, harassment, or similar? Maybe a letter to the council from a lawyer would fix this.
