How come no other Jeep channel emphasizes this. Gears. FN gears. Best bang for your buck mod ever. TJ 4.88 on 33s. It’s a tank.

I did a lift and bigger tires and I still have a ton of fun. Because I did it right. I didn't start with some wimpy v-6 or I6. I got a ZJ with a V-8.
I also didn't go right to 35s or 37s. I stayed with 33s, and with the stock gears I did lose a lot of MPG and some top end power, but down low, and at highway cruising speed, it still has plenty enough get up.
Haven't put a dime into either of my axles, except for replacing the unit bearings which fail about every 5 years, which is the only failure I've had, even though I've done some fairly extreme wheeling that I probably shouldn't have done without lockers.
All of that being said, I've wheeled on this setup for about 8 years. I've graduated. It is time for tons and 40s and lockers and a cage.

You must not be on any Jeep groups on facebook lol. They been saying that for years. They troll everyone that post about getting stuck when they have light bars lol.

If it’s the 42rle, it needs 5.13. A 44 up front and 5.38 would be better. I have 4.88 in my LJ. With 33’s it was marginal, now I’m on 35’s and it’s horrible. A 44 front and 5.38 is in n my future

Getting ready to re gear my xj going to 35 in tires, what's the difference between 456 gears and 488 gears

if you put 4:88 gears you need to grind off part of the ring gear tooth, or get a notched cross pin, or pull your ring gear off before you can take you shafts out. i think you have to do the same with 4:56.... so, if you look at the cherokee xj gear chart, you will see that 4:56 and 35" tires will be close to factory ratio. but the 4:88 will be a little slower and more torque.
also if you measure the tire you want to buy to get an idea of actual size. most tires are smaller than they say. my brand new cooper st/maxx tires are 35/12.5r15 but are really only about 34" tall. my buddy has 37" that are more like 35.5"...

@Steven Oswalt I run 4.56's in my 4.0L/Auto XJ w/34x9.50 TSLs (33.8" OD) and find them to be great. Cousin runs 4.88's in 2.5L/5spd TJ w/33x10.50 BfGs & swears by 'em. Smaller pinion in 4.88 set is theoretically weaker if you're clutch poppin' or neutral droppin' esp. w/lockers and high traction, but I've never seen a real life example of this as a problem. If you're buyin' new there's no price difference so I'd lean toward the deeper (4.88) set 'cuz, well, you know- Mud tires are like titties: great fun to play with but pretty soon you want a bigger set!
