Daft Punk Helmet Build in 31 Days

  • This video documents our Daft Punk Helmet build from start to finish. The plastic parts were modeled in SolidWorks and then printed on 3 3D printers. The visor was vacuum formed in my kitchen over a CNC machined mold. We used express PCB to build the circuit boards and are running a PIC 16F on each half of the helmet. All the circuitry is contained in each "light assembly" thanks to the use of surface mount components. Check out uiproductions.b... for build details.
    No helmets are for sale.
    And a special thanks to Volpin for inspiring us to do this.

    @dagumman We did the 3D printing at work, and the rest of the materials we got from McMaster Carr, Digikey, ExpressPCB, Superbright LEDs, Home Depot, etc.
    @DDawg45 On average, I think we each put in about 3 hours a day over the month that we worked on it. More towards the end.
    Regarding the sale of this helmet, it's not for sale. Due to the prototyping nature of the processes used to build it, it would cost about $6k, which I doubt anyone would be willing to pay. Again, this was done for fun.

  • @aespin001
    @aespin001  Před 14 lety +2

    @Aussiedog95 Yeah the nice thing about the spray tint is that you can go as dark or as light as you want. The first visor was way too dark. For the second we got it right. Surprisingly, it doesn't take much to make it look black. It's like wearing a pair of sunglasses when you're in it.

    It's funny coming back to this video a decade later. I remember watching this over and over back in 2010-2011 and there I was a 13 year old with little to no prop making experience under my belt, I had no idea what any of these machines were at that time and everything seemed so out of reach for me. Fast forward to now and 3D printers are pretty common tools for makers to have including myself and I've made multiple helmets and props over the years that 13 year old me would have never imagined being possible.

How much did the set up to craft such a beautiful creation cost, if you don't mind me asking. Also Do you do how to video's? Could you do a video on how to make something, maybe not as magnificent as that helmet, but something close to it out of house hold objects?

Yes the helmet IS the Daft label but after a while, they may want to change up the coloring or programming so they distinguish themselves until people copy that too.

  • @Doclolwut
    @Doclolwut Před 13 lety

    @lookupandjump I'm sure he would be willing to sell, its just that, making a helmet is a super-fan/enthusiast thing, so if you were serious about having a daft punk helmet, you would take the 31 days/17 months to build it yourself. Other than that, even with the 31 day build, for the creators to get their times worth, it would cost in between $1250 and $7440, judging they spent 4 hours a day working on this, at minimum wage.

  • @NNegativeCreep
    @NNegativeCreep Před 11 lety

    It's not cheating, I seriously doubt Guy Manuel's helmet is made all by hand. So why would he make his all by hand if he has the tools to make it precise and far more correct than you could by hand. Don't try and put down this great build, man.

You have a template to create these now, at least give some people the oppurtunity to purchase some of your crafty work.
