    My friend and I are cosplaying Daft Punk for Halloween this year and I’ve taken it upon myself to learn how to code LEDs so we can do their Discovery-era look. The idea of Bluetooth-operated LEDs sounds super awesome and I’m definitely gonna attempt this for our helmets!

    This is honestly one of the coolest things I've ever seen. I'm trying to figure out how possible it is to make a unique helmet for myself. From all the work and skill it requires, I doubt I could do it myself, but maybe I could commission someone. Anyway, your stuff is sick as hell!

    • @N8TEBB

      It’s def possible for anyone to make something, it just depends on how much work you’re willing to put into it. There are a variety of methods you can use, and different ways you can approach the electronics. It’s all learnable, but it takes time.

    I want to make one more than anything right now. I'm still trying to figure out how I want it but I'm going to combine multiple people's designs together. • @N8TEBB
      @N8TEBB  Před 3 lety +3

      I think it's nice to use bluetooth so I don't have to run any wires up my arm. If I wear the helmet around, I either keep my phone in my pocket or strap it to my wrist under my sleeve so I can control it.
      So glad you found my video helpful!!

    • @ObeyedDog

      @@N8TEBB Another question, is this matte black necessary? I have the gloss, should I put that on the primer and then again over the metallic? My helmet is put together, and I'm currently sanding. I'm also working towards figuring out how to wire 320 LEDs with 5 matrix drivers and an arduino, but for now I just want it to look as good as yours. Metallic paint is also something I don't have yet, but I'm getting there!

    • @N8TEBB
      @N8TEBB  Před 3 lety +2

      @@ObeyedDog I think you can use the paint without a base coat, but it won't hurt to put some gloss black down. If you just have primer, that should work fine. Really you only need a black gloss base if you use actual spray chrome.

    Great video man! I wish I had done some form of recording me working on my helmet I made for Halloween last year. I would have loved to only have had 3 pieces, at the time I only had a ender 3 and had to do it in 21 separate pieces. I don’t really know electronics either, so I bought a kit that was pre-programmed and just needed soldered up, which ended being almost 2/3 of the helmets cost.
    The hardest part for me was getting it chrome, though. It was my first foray into vinyl wrapping something, and of course I choose do it with what is the least forgiving vinyl color. Very at home friendly though! I could do it in my basement while I watched TV, something I couldn’t do for the sanding, bondo-ing, priming, or gluing.

      mine is a CR-10, but I've heard people have lots of luck with the ender 3. They're both made by creality. You can make this helmet with both printers. But I totally reccomend doing LOTS of research before buying a 3D printer. Make sure you know what all the features are and know what you're paying for. Don't base a 3D printer purchase off of one project but rather everything you plan on making in the future. Also, this is definitely NOT a beginner project. When you get a 3D printer make sure you do lots of smaller projects first so you don't get overwhelmed trying to balance a project as complex as this. Hope that helps!

    • @N8TEBB
      @N8TEBB  Před rokem

      Sanding a helmet, like many things, will be only as good as the amount of time you put into it. Now, the daft punk helmet is quite smooth model without too many details, which means a majority of the sanding can be done with a power sander. For a helmet like this one, it will probably take you no more than 30 minutes thoroughly sand the helmet. Typically, I do 3-4 rounds of sanding with filler primer and bondo in between. You have to let the filler primer set overnight, same with the bondo. If I worked on it every day for about an hour, I could probably crunch a helmet out in a week. No LEDs of course. Make sure you use a respirator when sanding/applying bondo and when your painting.

    Hey bro !!! Love the helmet !!! I’m making daft punk inspired music and I want to make a robotic helmet like there’s but customized to my self and I have a question. I’m going to use Eva foam for the base of the helmet but if I paint it like that it doesn’t shine and looks ugly. If I were to use spot puddy then sand it down would it work as if I had a plastic base that I could then use primer and a chrome onto ? Sry for the long comment by the way lol

    • @N8TEBB
      @N8TEBB  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks for the support!
      Have you sealed your foam with some sort of sealant/primer (like plasti-dip)? Paint doesn't like to stick to EVA foam so adding this helps.
      I did a little bit of looking around on one of the cosplay forums I am on, and most people say bondo on EVA is a recipe for disaster. Some well know members have tried it and ended up scrapping projects.
      There is hope however. Someone has used a different product with some success that does what you're trying to accomplish: www.405th.com/forums/threads/foam-builders-new-hardening-technique-alternative-to-plasti-dip-and-pva.36702/#post-666907
      In my opinion, bondo will not work very well on foam, neither will filler primer. You may have luck with other methods though. I would recommend doing some tests on scrap foam pieces before trying anything on the whole helmet.

      As for printing settings, I used a layer height of 0.2mm with a speed of 50mm/s. If you know your printer well you can go faster, but I don't mind waiting a bit longer for a better print. I believe I set the infill to 20% and used support on overhangs over 65 degrees. 20% infill is plenty strong if not a bit overkill. These settings are for PLA btw.
      Any of the other settings really comes down to your personal preferences and particular printer. Most of the defaults in cura should work just fine. I assume you'll be sanding this down after so you don't have to worry so much about imperfections in the print.

      @@johnathand6707 hmmm... thats a good question. the electronics were about 150 and the helmet was 15 in plastic, plus 20 for paint, 15 for the visor. This is all in canadian dollars though. all the bits are WAYYY cheaper in the states, but it cost ~$200 CAD
      Why do you ask?
