  • Testing 8mm shaft @ 160cm with 2 x 14.5mm bands on Pathos 130. This setup should ONLY BE ATTEMPTED once you have changed out your sears with an Ermessub kit and modified the handle !!! It is a bleuwater setup with a LOT of power.

    Great videos mate. For us Aussies out here, a very common gun to use in bluewater hunting is a 140-160cm Rob Allen Tuna railgun with 2x16mm bands and a 7.5mm shaft. Do you have anything in your arsenal that is close to this style of gun? If so, can you post up a quick penetration/ accuracy test? I'm convinced that even your 120 Pathos tests will yield better results but seeing is believing. It'd be good to swim with a smaller gun and shoot the same fish.

      The RA 140 tuna gun did terrible in the penetration test. I think it suffers due to the low handle causing high muzzle rise. You cannot power up that gun as if you do you lose power rather than gain power. The gun in this video is dramatically more powerful than the best setup RA 160 gun. Note that this is not a regular Pathos setup but rather a customized setup that needs to have a customized handle and changed out trigger sears.

      Just spent the last little while enjoying your channel. I just watched your Pathos roller video and it seems that your 82cm gun with 2 small ID bands and a good shaft out performed both the Mako 120 and Aimrite 120 guns by quite a margin. That is insane you could set up such a small gun to shoot that well. I can't imagine being able to convince any spearo locally to ditch their everyday 120-130 and replace it with an 82-90 pathos. We target kingys aka yellowtail kingfish here. If I were to replicate your setup on a 90cm pathos gun with sigalsub 7mm shaft and 2 small ID bands, double wrapped with 200lb mono, do you honestly believe I could be taking kingys up to 20kg with this setup? I usually don't shoot fish further than 3-4m from the tip.

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 7 lety +2

      It depends on distance you shoot. A 7mm shaft is a relatively light shaft and loses velocity quickly after 5 meters. I would go with a Pathos 110 and a 7.5mm shaft. With a good shaped handle and changed out sears ... any fish in the ocean is game. Keep an eye out for my handle shaping video ... it really changes everything. Performance comes from getting full efficiency from your bands and by having a super stable shaft flight ... this is unfortunately not possible with low handled guns such as the Mako or Aimrite.

    Hello Maj, what do you think about the Rob Allen shafts? I think you prefer coned tips to the tri-cut (faceted) tips, but other than that, do you approve of these shafts? I never see you test them.

  • @majdq8
    @majdq8  Před 8 lety

    Maybe the 7.5mm @ 160cm is a better match and less recoil ... but with a properly fitted grip the recoil is not a problem and an 8mm @ 160cm shaft really gives long range accuracy and power that is able to take down even large tuna. This is usually only possible with 4 or 5 banded wood guns and when you think about how light the setup here is (710 grams without shaft and bands), it really is a game changer!

      @LukeZaczek Před 8 lety

      So you would recommend setting up a Pathos 130 with the 7.5mm SigalSub shaft instead of the Hunt 8mm?

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 8 lety

      Depends on what you are shooting. Obviously the 8mm shaft would be better for longer range shooting on bigger game. The 7.5mm shaft is also a very powerful setup and would be a good compromise if hunting a reef.

    • @LukeZaczek
      @LukeZaczek Před 8 lety

      Thanks. I'll probably go with the 7.5mm sigilsub paired with 14mm bands so it is easier to load.
      Also, have you compared the SigalSub double flopper shaft to the single flopper? I'm wondering if a double flopper may provide better hold in fish but wonder how it would affect accuracy.

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 7 lety +2

      I like double floppered shafts as you lose less fish. They are just as accurate as single floppered shafts if you use a cone.

    Hi mate thanks for posting these videos! I find them really helpful!
    I ve watches both the videos fpr the pathos open carbon 120 and 130. I have the 130 version and i would like to retain the standard pathos 7mm sandvik shaft but i m not happy with the standard rubbers. I still have a lot of 16mm leftover rubber from my shorter guns...do you think the standard shaft and a pair of 16mm rubbers would be ok on the 130? If so what leght/ percentage?
    Cheers

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 2 lety +1

      I think for 8mm best is 2 x 14.5mm is an excellent choice. If you feel you need more power better to go to 7.5mm rather than add a 3rd band. A 7.5mm with 2 hot 14.5mm small ID bands is very close to Terminal Velocity of the shaft.

    hey there majdq8 ! thank you for these video and taking out the guess work for a lot of us. Im putting together a bluewater pipegun (meandros reverse handle - thick 3mm wall carbon barrel) total 137cm bandstretch. I'm hoping to shoot an 8mm shaft but only 13.8 mm rubbber is readily available here in my diveshop. would you consider 3 x 13.8mm to ease loading rather than 2x14.5mm ? or would that be too much power ? thanks

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 6 lety +1

      I think a 3rd band on a pipe gun is too much. You really don't need it though ... 2 x 14.5mm bands are more than enough and you can now go to even 15mm small ID bands. With 137cm band stretch that gives incredible performance. A pipe gun has very little mass so I absolutely think that you should modify the handle to make sure recoil is under control before proceeding. Take a look at my handle mod video and do a similar handle ... if you do that you will be very happy with results. I am not familiar with the Meandros reverse handle and trigger, but I would keep an eye on the sears to make sure they are not scratching with these high loads.

    what band setup would you recommend for a riffe euro 130 for blue water? im using 2 x 16 mm cut at 28 inches but it feels slightly over powered. love the videos keep it up

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 8 lety +1

      I would use similar to the setup in this video. 2 x 14.5mm @ 360% stretch and either a 7.5mm or 8mm shaft. I customize my Riffe Euro a little and you need to carve up a place above the thumb bridge to hold the handle better where it doesn't injure your thumb bridge during recoil. Check out my Riffe 120 X video you can see some of the modifications I made.

  • @LukeZaczek
    @LukeZaczek Před 8 lety

    One question I've got about this gun. You have it setup so it is basically ready to use for bluewater, but I'm concerned about the strength of the line guide where the bungee/shooting line attaches to the gun. Do you know how strong that connection is, as I can't tell how fire that wire loop extends into the muzzle?
    And are you still using tennis string on your setups or have you gone back to traditional mono? What diameter was the shooting line in these tests?

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 8 lety +1

      Yes you are absolutely right. I have put another screw on the muzzle and on this gun I actually put a few layers of Carbon Fiber to reinforce the hold of the line guide. I usually tie my gun to a float line from the grip and thus the line guide needs to be very strong. I have used this setup with reinforced muzzle, to shoot Dogtooth tuna and large GT's with no problems.

    I watched video of Pathos 130 carbon with standard d'angelo 2 handle and the penetration is same as this (with handle mod), correct? So recoil does not matter that much.

    Hey Majdq8 your reviews are epic! im over in australia and nobody over here bother with this saught of stuff. i have been trying to tune one of my guns and usually shoots really inaccurate. i run a 150 aimrite king venom with 8mm and mori slip tip. i have some 14.5mm primeline and want to rig it up with that. do you have any suggestions? i run a 150 king venom with 8mm x 170 hunt spear and mori cable slip tip. any advice would be awesome thanks mate!

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 6 lety

      I haven't tried the 150 Aimrite. But in general you want a high handle that allows the recoil to go into your palm. This reduces leverage that recoil has on destabilizing the shaft on exit ... thus you get very high performance. If handle is low you get muzzle lift ... which pushes the shaft as it exits. A shaft that is not stable will quickly lose velocity and will not hit hard and won't be accurate.

    • @mbp_spearfishing
      @mbp_spearfishing Před 6 lety

      Thanks for your input, so you think the handle would be more important than getting the rubber configuration correct?

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 6 lety

      The powerful rubber setup I put in this video is only controllable if you do the handle as mentioned. If you don't have a correct handle design the power will not be controlled properly and you will lose accuracy and shaft velocity as the shaft will not come out of the track stable.

  • @christopherantimie1613

    I'm currently working on a pipe gun with the specs of a 130cm barrel length (26mm id of course) and 2x14.5 or 15mm bands and a 8mm shaft. Can the d'angelo 1 handle manage that load? I would ask on spearboard but my account doesn't have permission to post anything yet. Thank you

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 7 lety

      I would feel more comfortable with a SS top with such a powerful load, but I think it can handle it. The bigger problem is controlling recoil ... for that you need to shape the handle properly. If you don't do that, you will not be able to control the gun and the gun could actually come out of your hand and hit you in the face. Please proceed with lower powered loads first and if possible wait until I post my handle shaping video. With a properly shaped handle the gun can easily deal with even double the recoil of this setup.

    With the 8mm shaft Does the gun feel nose/muzzle heavy while aiming?

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 8 lety +1

      Yes a little bit. With a custom handle that is not such a big problem as the handle gives you very good leverage ... which allows much easier control of the tip. You absolutely need to customize the handle in a proper shape or this load will be uncontrollable.
