I absolutely love when people can have relationships like this. I know sometimes break ups are toxic for a reason seeing people being civil/friendly with their exes and the new people in their lives is so respectful of the previous relationship. Like how much nicer is it for the kids and friends and other people in their lives
I have 2 ex's and my kids came first. We worked at keeping it civil for their sakes. First ex was abusive and it lasted 2 kids and 4 years. He and I were at our son's first baby's birth and made a run to pick up the kid's insulin kit and food together. By the time he passed away 2 years ago, we had seen each other a couple of times and had made peace with the past. The second got our daughter for holidays and a month in the summer and we paid for that trip the 700 miles away. When she graduated high school, he and his new wife came down and we all had dinner. I've not seen him since, his choice. I've finally found my soulmate and we've been married for 31 years. He was step-dad to all the kids and is grandpa to all 9 of the grandkids. It CAN be kept civil, it's not the kid's fault you're divorced so you do what's best for them, and never talk bad about their other parent because they look up to that person.
I loved the fact that my parents seemed to get along quite well even after their divorce. I was about 6 when they divorced and they never even once argued in front of me and my brother. I was 10 when my dad died and it was about 10 years after that I found out my dad had cheated on my mom and that was the reason for the divorce (I was quite surprised because they never showed anything like that in front of me, now that I think about it I'm not sure my brother knows about it even now...). Also my mom broke up with my sister's dad but they have a little bit more difficult relationship (my mom complains about him and child support) but they really try to keep everything okay between them for my sister. Also when I was a kid I always wondered why my gran-ma and grandfather came to our birthdays during different times (my mom made sure that there was at leas 1 hour if not a whole day between the times they were planning to visit) and later found out they had really abusive and toxic relationship (just few weeks ago I found out my gran-ma even got a restraining order against my grandfather when my mom and her brother were kids). I think I've seen my gran-ma and grandfather interact once in my whole life and even they were acting okay with each other even if they did keep a distance and my grandfather left quite soon after (it's still better for us to try to keep them separated any time that we can even if they can act civil).
My husband is one of my best friends' ex husband and she hooked us up because she thought we would click. I would never have believed it could happen until it did.
