This is a very ancient Russian ritual song. The song is about an orphan girl getting married, but she has neither a father nor a mother who could bless her for this marriage. And she goes to the riverbank to ask for blessings from her dead mother. In pagan beliefs, the river is the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the dead. The girl hopes that the mother’s spirit will hear her and she will receive a blessing.

The text of the song refers to the pagan rites of appeal to the spirits of the ancestors, which tells us that this song came to us from those times when Russia had not yet adopted Christianity. But this happened more than a thousand years ago! So, you can imagine how ancient this song is.
@@vadimmalinovskiy8970 Ah, information I did not know about this song. There seems to be a distance between the ancient lyrics and what Diana is doing onstage. (If they are indeed translated correctly in the captions --- which may not be true. I question the word 'lull' because it seems awkward. Another translation I have seen says 'hesitate'.) She does not summon spirits ... yet there they are. She does not speak with her mother ... yet people are saying she is doing that. She does not seem afraid of the spirits even as they carry her away to her death. She says she is unhappy; yet she is smiling. If everything is happening as Diana intends it (and why would it not?), then she must have gone to the river to ask for a blessing because she had none. The river was her only hope. If the river gave her death, she was willing to take that chance. And that's what she got: a boat appears and she is ferried to the land of the dead. Maybe it was Diana's hope that she would meet her mother on the other side, but the song neither says nor implies that. This girl is very desperate and very brave to risk such a thing. Nature spirits are not to be trifled with. This song describes a tragedy.

Secondly, I think it is not worth evaluating the thoughts and motives of ancient people from the point of view of modern people. In pre-Christian times, communication with the spirits of the ancestors was not something terrible. This was quite common, like sacrifices, and various other rituals that modern man would find simply monstrous.
But you are right: the song is really tragic - from the point of view of a modern person. An orphan girl is married out against her wishes. This is already tragic in itself. So it was accepted in those days. Even the father and mother did not ask for the daughter’s opinion when they gave her in marriage. And no one was interested in the opinion of the orphan. The girl tells her mother that she lives well, she has girlfriends, and the family in which she lives is rich: the yard is full of horses, and the house is full of guests, but all this does not please her, because her mother is not nearby, and there is nobody bless her before the wedding.
Well, the fact that some spirit takes her to the boats at the end of the song - I think this is just an invention of the director. This is not in the lyrics. It just looks beautiful, and the organizers of the show made such an ending. Although, there is another opinion: the girl did not receive the blessing of her mother, and therefore leaves for the world of the dead. Ancient texts are always hard to understand: many characters, images and allegories are very unfamiliar to us. :)
@@ardalla535 Yes. When the first time I heard it I have had the same reaction - it just shocked me. Why people are creating those songs for HER? Do they mean well for her? or it is an ill intention of some adult and jealous people in the industry there? In every concert, they are and their mothers are asking her to sing this song, however, in several interviews, she said: it is an emotionally hard song for her to sing. [and, in one concert they asked her to wear the pink slacks suit for this song because it matched their napkins on the tables!] The first time she has sung it in the "Margulis evening". She was crying while she has sung this song... and they were disrespectfully moving the chairs there! It had stunned me then.

When I watch her it makes me wonder how many voices are out there that don't have the resources to develop their own unique voice. if you haven't heard her story look it up and just think if her mother kept her we would not know her talent and hard work as we do now.
Rechenka is a traditional folk song in some ways. It's telling a story of a woman who is an orphan, she's gone to the river to ask her dead parent's blessing on the wedding. She laments at the fact she has no family at the wedding and is crying for a blessing from the dead upon her marriage. It's a mix of joy and grief and Diana transmits this emotion flawlessly here.

The subtitles do not include a full translation, because Diana sings using temple Russian (a special change in words and inflections of declension), and not the technical one that is usually used in spoken speech. The Russian people themselves are mostly unable to reproduce the temple speech instead of the usual one, but they intuitively and figuratively understand the meaning of words. So Diana does not just sing, but sings in a special language, in a special way peculiar to ancient Russia, the one that comes from the depths of centuries.

If the Russian soul could sing, surely this is what it would sound like. As you said, what an amazing performance. Maybe she will never top this as a performance She was channeling something primal. She is an orphan bride on her wedding day. She is telling her woes to the River which asks in its turn why she is not feeling joyful and happy. She answers that she has no reason to be happy. Then she gets excited for a moment telling how their house is full of guests and their yard is full of horses. Then her voice slides down as if falling into an abyss. She sings that she doesn’t have a mother or a father to give her their their blessing. Then she starts howling like a wounded animal. She ends her song talking to the River again, asking why it sits there and does not play around. This song tells the story of Diana’s life and every time gives me a heart ache!!
And yes, she won the singing contest.
From comments on other reactions - It's an old Russian folk song about an orphan bride who has no parents to give blessings to her marriage, so she goes to the river, which represents the border between the living and the dead to ask for a blessing. The part about the horses in the yard just means that there are a lot of people gathered at the celebration, but nobody who can "give her away" in the traditional sense. That creepy whisper was the voice of her deceased mother, and the yodeling part was her weeping. It looks like the spirits of the river were taking her away in that boat at the end, so someone said that she might have drowned after getting a negative answer. This is what some other comments have said.
Really interesting, sounds like a song rich with traditional heritage.

This is beautiful even though I do not know the language. Selfishly I would like to see more of her singing in English, but I suppose Russia deserves to have their national treasure. Regardless she is one of only two young female singers today that just stand out IMHO above all others with almost inhuman ability. The other is Norway's Angelina Jordan who has been reacted to a little bit on this channel. They are both so unique in how they pour out their soul into music that they cannot be compared, the only thing that they have in common is their ability to move me.

She reminds me a bit of Stevie Nick's. Not so much the yodel, but the stylistic effort. I've read that she suffered horrible abuse as a very young child and learned to find a way out channel praise to herself by using her incredible sound. What a gift!

"Реченька" - это очень-очень древняя русская народная песня, и ее мелодия характерна для русской дохристианской певческой культуры, тогда русские жили в полной гармонии с Матерью-Природой. Лирика содержит много архаизмов, но они очень веселы для русского уха и понятны также. Она пробуждает самые глубокие струны русской души и культурного генетического кода. Это как будто выворачивает нас наизнанку.
Эта песня имеет совершенно другой смысл в исполнении Дианы. Финал изменился. Это не свадебная песня. Это просто крик. Это отказ от отца и матери, которые хотят отдать свою дочь без ее желания человеку, которого она не любит.

She will please critics.
Critics are cynical. They've heard that, got tired of that, don't want to hear it any more... they crave the new. They want to be surprised. Shocked.
But critics aren't the arbiters of popular taste that they would like to be. The true arbiters are consumers - what will they buy?
What strength remains to the big music labels is that they aren't run by critics. They're run by marketers who know little about music but plenty about public taste. The questions they always ask about an artist are not, 'Is that new?' or even 'Do I like it?' They ask, 'Can people dance to it?' and 'Can we sell that?'
Marketers judge the latter question by what has sold before. So imitation, not invention, dominates the conversation at the Big Labels. This is true of the American music publishers, but it's equally true of the South Korean music industry, or the Chinese music industry, or the Russian music industry (though the latter has fostered more than the usual amount of innovation in the past two decades). Publishers are ruled by formulas.
Judges on a talent show are, by definition, critics. They sit through act after act; it's their day job. They're bored. Most of the acts are imitative. Diana, being original, will thrill them. But marketers listening to her strange vocalizations will perform a different calculation.
Diana's challenge is to wow the judges, please the critics, enough to gain some attention, a platform... and then turn her attention to pleasing the marketers, because that's the ticket to the big lights.
Some people would call that 'selling out.' But the artists who don't make that sharp turn in their careers at the right moment are stuck in niches.
How many past talent show winners are there? Many. How many can you name today? Few. Judges liked their winners. Marketers didn't.
Me, I'm more sympathetic to the critics. I like innovation. I'm enthralled when singers show us something fresh and new. I'm pleased by Diana's performance in this song; she innovates, and she's in the moment, convincing. It's also nice to see a contralto stretching the limits of what we expect from that vocal range. Too, there aren't all that many successful contraltos in pop music. (Sopranos are a dime a dozen.) I'd be happy to see her succeed.
But to do that, she'll have to plan that sharp turn in her music. And the stuff you and I like about her music will fade into minor innovations in a matrix of imitation.
It is a tough thing that streamlined marketing has really had an effect on innovation. This is even more true with Spotify, which is algorithm based so the more similar you are to other artists, the easier it can place you and get you views. But the more unique you are, the less the algorithms can place you and thus, less views. This is the issue with my music and spotify as an example.
Basically it is the same issue you are mentioning. Basing future predictions on what has gone before is a better gamble financially, but you do miss the truly special in order to stay safe. This has always happened but to some degree is more pronounced than ever. Lets just hope the truly special artists still shine through enough.

Speaking of 14 year olds, would love to see you react to this 14 year old from 2016 on The Voice Ukraine, Elina Ivaschenko singing the Eurovision winning song, "1944". Not as flashy as Diana's, but still very impressive for a 14 year old to bring out the emotions of this very serious and dark song. Unfortunately the only video I can find of her performing this has annoying commentary interrupting, but it doesn't diminish the power of her performance.

Diana also "bathes" in iodel. This is a different show. She's a lot less old here. Jury members were just afraid to take her on their teams. She initially took the high bar, they thought Diana was the only one singing in this style and didn't know what to offer her to sing on the next tour.
