This episode had people shook when it came out. No one was expecting this show to drop BLM vibes, but good on the writers for tackling this issue in a kid-friendly manner.
Important note: this is one of two episodes where Ladybug received a firearm as her Lucky Charm--"Malediktator" was the other. In both episodes, LB was confronting an abuse of power aided and abetted by the police. And in both eps, Ladybug didn't use the gun the obvious way by shooting someone.
Luna doesn't feel comfortable making political statements, but one passing remark of hers stands out: "Do you want to save the city or not?" It indirectly connects to how law enforcement responds to real or perceived threats by militarizing entire neighborhoods, disrupting the lives of the people who live there in the name of public order.

3:30 Way back in "Stormy Weather" Marinette said that Manon was the daughter of "a friend of her mother's", who we would find out later was Nadja Chamack.

So here it is... the episode in which Miraculous touches as directly as it can on the topic of race relations, bearing in mind that although its target audience has grown up since it first aired, it is still aimed at younger viewers. There's no doubt that the ticket inspector showed a racist attitude towards Sabine; notably he didn't waive the fine or apologise once the misunderstanding had been settled. The line about showing humanity in the application of the law points, indirectly, towards some of the real-life inhumanity we have so sadly witnessed in recent years. I can remember a deeply moving community post two years ago, on which you claimed not to be sure of the right words in response to an atrocious injustice in your own country; from your beautiful humanity, you produced just the right words anyway. That is why you are loved by so many, dear Luna - you can see what is good in people and call out what is not, just as our heroes (in particular Cat Noir) did in this episode.
Some have criticized the animation of this episode, but the opening scene with Sabine gently moving around the house getting the day started was extremely beautiful, revealing the beauty of her character which has been given relatively short shrift in the series until now. Sabine's transformation into Qilin means that Marinette becomes the sole member of the Dupain-Cheng family, as seen so far, not to be fully akumatised. It's telling, however, that Sabine could break the akuma as her natural goodness cut through her feelings. We could see, both in that moment and in her scheme on the bus to move the inconsiderate businessman out of the disabled zone, where Marinette gets her traits of justice, strength and problem solving from!

let’s address the elephant in the room: the political stuff. it has been confirmed that this episode is an attempt at tackling racism. and i am not the only one of the opinion that it just doesn’t work. if you wanna tackle an issue like that, you have to do so unambiguously, none of this leaving it to interpretation. and the argument that ‘it’s a kids show’ so they can’t do that is voided because Disney channel has unambiguously tackled racism while remaining completely age-appropriate. additionally, as such commentators as haze clarke have pointed out, the punishment of the fine is never withdrawn despite being unfairly dished out. why?
what i would argue they did tackle well, though, was police overreach. which, sure, is most commonly connected to racism, but not always, so yes, it is a separate issue. lots of excellent quotes about justice there, most especially ‘integrity without intelligence is nothing but blind ignorance’. there are plenty of ‘certain people’ i would love to hear that.
anyway, on to less sad things. this ep world premiered in the US, a rarity for the show, but nobody cared about it because only three days previously, part 1 of the finale was illegitimately released by Spectrum! and then the day “Qilin” was released legit, “Penalteam” was leaked as well! it was a scary time.
i’m not sure why everyone hates on the animation in this episode. especially since the next one contains some of the most mediocre animation of the entire show.

Thank you for tackling the commentary on this. I would have said more about my feelings about the episode in terms of how it handled being political, But since I was just still soaking in the episode I didn't feel like I could articulate my thoughts properly to make sense. But I 100% agree with you. Something about the way it handled this seems to fall short. Because of the fact that it tried to be "subtle" And it's political message, I was worried that I was reading into it too much and since I don't normally get into my political views on this channel, I was worried that it was going to seem like it was coming out of left field for me. But I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw this episode this way. I understand and I agree with the message that miraculous was trying to put out here but like I said I think it felt kind of short because they were tiptoeing around it too much.

Two aspects of this show in general interest me: (1) it was originally planned to be more explicitly political; and (2) it is created in France for international release.
On the first point: as its original audience has matured, so too has the show's content. A viewer who was 10 years old when season 1 first came out will now be around 17 - that is a massive difference in terms of maturity, particularly of thought and emotion; one age is that of childhood in full flower, whilst the other is considered to be nascent (if not yet actual) adulthood. It makes sense that the show might now be tackling issues about which such increasingly mature young people will be aware, interested and concerned. However, there are still younger people watching, and I suspect it is for them that the creators are obliged to moderate the content. Apparently the age rating for season 5 is going up, so the creators have presumably lobbied networks for more latitude to be open about adult themes in the show.
On the second point, which has links with the first point: writers write what they know, and although some things in human society are universal, we are divided by such things as nationality and cultural idiosyncrasy. As I said, this show is conceived in France, which is a country that is proud of its culture and jealously guarded about it. There is even a streak of xenophobia among its people, which I have witnessed on more than one of my visits to the country. I have seen American tourists shrugged out of a shop because they didn't speak French and were just blanked by the shopkeepers when asked "Do you speak any English?" On that particular occasion, I tried to intervene with an offer to translate between those involved (I took French all the way through school and have used it on many occasions since, so it's good enough for an everyday conversation there) but it was too late, the shopkeeper had started dealing with another customer and it was as if the Americans no longer existed to him. In Paris, this xenophobic attitude runs deeper still - there are allegedly some restaurants that don't put prices on their menus, so that they can overcharge if they suspect you aren't French (or aren't Parisian, even!) so, sadly, it isn't surprising to see the attitude displayed by the ticket inspector in "Qilin." We should note that Rolland Dupain, when introduced in "Bakerix," showed a past disdain for Sabine as his son's choice of bride, commenting that he didn't approve of "mixing rice flour into the bread flour," or words to that effect.
Now, I have to say that there are many wonderful welcoming people in France, and the inherent right wing conservative/protectionist nature of its politics and culture isn't perhaps as pronounced as it used to be, but it does exist and we see something of it in this episode.
