Do you air down? It's a game changer... Want to know how we do it? Here ya go: www.patreon.com/posts/22231786
Why air down on a packed road surface? Doesn't that make tires more susceptible to puncture if you hit a pothole?
@@Scott___T I'm not an expert but I suspect the higher the pressure is in a tire the greater the propensity for a puncture from a sharp object. With lower pressure the wall or bottom may give a bit thereby avoiding the punch through. With higher pressure there is no give and that combined kinetic energy is going somewhere and in this instance the pointy object may go through or penetrate the rubber to some degree.
In regard to a pothole specifically, I think the greater damage potential is to the tire's rim especially if the pressure in the tire is low. Under lower pressure the momentum of the vehicle is going to slam the tire's rim into the distal rim of the pothole (the lower pressurized tire will provide less resistance). My personal opinion is that in regard to potholes specifically lower pressure makes it less likely the tire will be punctured however it makes it more likely the rim will be bent by a severe impact.
He's running his tires at what I consider a good medium pressure. Probably too low for good handling and tire longevity on hard surface road but he's apparently adjusting to those pressures for soft dirt roads. Depending upon how much weight he's carrying and the thickness/rigidity of his sidewalls of course.
HIgher pressure in tires of course increases wear and tear of steering and suspension components because they provide less cushion to impacts from road irregularities.
@@Scott___T 1. The road isn't that packed. Often has loose gravel, other spots are hard washboard. 2. The rock they use for gravel is sharp shale.
My nephew and I did the Dempster on motorcycles a few years ago. Amazing trip.
Wow, post a couple of comments about that trip! What stood out?
We did a similar trip when I was a kid from Monterey, CA to Fairbanks, ALASKA in 1969 with a station wagon and camper. My Dad was in the Army and we moved to Alaska for three years. It took seven days but I will never forget it. I was epic. I5 gave me my spirit of wanderlust which I passed along to my kids as well. Awesome vids.
What I love about your series is the video quality. You can really see the beauty of the landscape
Thanks for the feedback and support!
I just found this and started watching all you videos. I'm really enjoying them.
I glad I just found your channel. I’m hooked, this is better than binge watching Netflix.
Hi, the Dempster highway has shachl, a flat rock like gravel which may get imbedded and cut the tire. Decreasing the tire pressure gives a softer tire, decreasing the likely hood of shachle getting into the tire. Hey I lived in the Yukon for 20 years. The road to Tuk is an engoneering marvel, perma frost was covered with very thick pads, then gravel hauled in up to 20 feet deep.
Mosquitoes: many years ago, had a spruce tree off the deck and wasps, usually when it gets dark, a high pressure water spray will wash the nest away and they are gone. But in this instance I had to use long shot bug spray, it was quiet outside, no wind. Sprayed at about a 75 degree angle the length of my arm, then moved out of the spray. Going back, wasps gone, flies gone, mosquitoes gone and cutting the grass was peaceful and enjoyable. There after every week , 3 circle sprays did the yard. Also had worked with Yukon government, they provided the equipment and checmical to treat a tourism area.......same theory, the mist settles down, HAS to be no wind. Hope this helps. and also keep an old shirt sprayed with Deet, do wash it in the summer, it also helps to keep bug away.
I think this one was the best one yet!!! I enjoy the playful banter the family has, reminds me of me and my girls (wife and daughters)!
Thanks, Jonathan! We really we're having such a good time 😁
So totally enjoying this journey through this from afar with you guys. Y’all are an amazing family. That made a huge decision with great impact. On so many lives who can not do this. Great admiration for you all.
This is Awesome!!! Every bit of your videos is pure gold....thanks for sharing and be safe!!!
Glad you like them!
Fantastic video!! Your family is adorable. Stay safe.
The education your daughter is receiving is unmatched... awesome job guys...
Thanks so much!
Been on the highway twice, once solo, second time with son, plan on a third trip, Dawson city is nice surprise. WOW!!!
A few years back my dad had a dream to drive over the ice roads on the Arctic Ocean into Tuktoyuktuk. Unfortunately he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and was given limited time to live. In 2017 the ice road was going to officially close for good because they had just built a dirt road highway leading to Tuktoyuktuk to replace it. My dad and I decided to make the trip up because it was now or never. We went through the famous Dempster Highway. For the most part it was a nice drive, but we were quickly reminded how dangerous Mother Nature could be when a snow storm came through. Luckily we survived and accomplished our goal. Since then my dad has moved on to the next life, but I am left with fond memories spending time with my dad in the wilderness and Arctic Circle. Also, I remember that gas station =)
The lesson isn't lost on me. I'm 37 but will only live once. It's possibly now or never.. follow your dreams.
Wow! Subscribed! Love your style and the video is almost like being there in person. What an epic adventure. BTW your "pit crew" at the fuel stop is WAY cute! Have fun kids..Robert in Tennessee
You did it right! Best wine for camping, yellow tail, cheap cheerful and tasty!! All you need is a two-four of canadian and I declare you an honorary Canadian!!
Y’all are so much fun to watch!! Looking forward to the next adventure
Thanks for following along!
Awesome!! Love camping next to a stream or river. The background sound of running water can truly make you embrace nature, and sleep really good as well!! Thanks for sharing!!
Can't beat camping by a stream!
I'm really glad you guys enjoyed Canada I know it's not over yet but I'm looking forward to more videos on your trip thanks a lot guys. 👍👍🇨🇦
Happy New Year! Dempster Highway looks like an awesome trip. Looking forward to more videos! Keep on rollin’
wow, Yukon Territory, phenomenally beautiful scenery, thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Family memories to last a lifetime! Great channel! Very inspiring!
Hey Jason! Glad you enjoyed the adventure!
Nice up date guys....naughty people leaving us viewers on the edge of our seats waiting for the next episode !!! Lol
You just can't beat out door school lessons and some nature study time 🌼🌻🍃🌿🍂🐿
Keep safe 👍👍
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome seeing you guys teaching your little one to identify plants. Foraging and small game will definitely help stretch your budget.
Absolutely! That was one of our favorite parts of the trip. ( No small game though.)
Can't wait to go here from bottom of BC all the way up
We went on over to Chicken Alaska and down to the Denali Highway then up to Fairbanks to meet a good friend who flew us into his cabin on Dune lake in deep in the tundra/forest. Then back home again. Such a beautiful trip..
Love the great white North!
I’m addicted to watching this channel! My girlfriend and I are just now getting into overlanding with my FJ, seeing all of these gorgeous sights makes me anxious! Safe travels!
Don’t hate me, but we drove the Dempster 34 years ago mosquito free. September 1984, we got snow in Dawson which killed all the bugs. I’d rather have it be a bit chilly than deal with skeeters. BWT, the wife and I did it in a Toyota 4x4, standard cab with a Snug Top. Minimal style. 14,00 miles, three months. Love your vids!
Sounds like you had an awesome trip! Bug free would have been nice!
Loving your videos more and more. Your music choices and voice over narration really set your content apart. Thank you and God bless you. Happy New Year!
Thanks, John! We really appreciate that!
Just watched it again as I missed a few bits during the premiere live chat.
I like the new intro😊
Thanks for the mosquito advice.
I hope the adventure that Sarah hinted at during the narration at the end was not too taxing on the three of you.
Thanks for joining us, Gavin! Seeya next time!
I did the dempster as far as you could go in 2015 (Inuvik). I didn;t air down at all. Ran at 70psi on goodyear wranglers. Didn't have a flat. Rough though. Was driving a 2013 Tacoma. Perfect vehicle for this road
Love the music you use, such a nice change from all the techno stuff you get on every other channel. Keep up the great videos
Glad you're enjoying it! Music is a tough one to find balance with. We just play what we like 😁
small trick up north is also to set camp as far from evergreens as you can. As big of a game changer as running water
Just watched your travel video. Very good. And excellent background music. Loved it
I see she loves playing head games with you! Looking good - the meal that is. Yes we have great space and fantastic landscapes.
The plot thickens!! You have now officially seen more of Canada than I have . . . and I live here lol. Really need to get out more often. Silly Sarah outtake lol.
Wow I appreciate you sharing, I will be watching more sure is beautiful there for sure
I'm saving my money to go on an adventure like this
I can't wait :D
Fantastic video guys and great music love following your travels you guys are an inspiration to follow in your journey.
Thanks so much!
Was just up to Inuvik this past week. October 22. Where they fuel up has changed. AfD is across the road now and the place with the canopy has new pumps which accepts credit or debit cards. Next fuel point is Eagle pass, then fort McPherson.
Can't wait to see what Adventure the New Year holds in store! Blessings!
So much more to come!
Thank you for taking the time to make these awesome videos. I put it full screen and just enjoy the scenery. I really like the shots of the beaver with the minnows jumping in the background. Great shot. About an hour ago we were invited on a 10 day trip from Missoula to Haynes AK. So now am watching your videos again looking for tips like the mosquito burners.
Thanks for the support, Maurice! Sounds like you've got an epic adventure in the works! Feel free to email us any specific questions and we will cover them in some upcoming videos detailing lessons learned for North country travels.
Canada had picture perfect campgrounds back in the 70ies on my first trip to BC driving a few thousand miles in a rented C Class RV. Back in the day the transcanadian highway was a single lane road - and the campgrounds had rivers filled with steelhead. #bestvacationofmylife #6weeksoffreedom
Glad to see their campgrounds are still going strong! Some good things just should never change.
Really enjoy you guys videos, excellent quality!
Drove it in an '86 Astro van...not AWD, no knobby tires, all that. Broke a headlight & cracked a windshield. Then again, my mom's family is at about the 7 gen mark in Alaska so-
As always a “fantastic job “ on the video. Someone mentioned these videos are inspirational and I have to agree . Nothing beats camping next to a river or stream . Only down fall for me is it seems I go pee a lot more when I camp right next to them .
Thanks! Haha, I hear on the running water sound... many bathroom breaks 😂
I work in the north maine woods. The flies are pretty bad so I use Ben's 100 deet. That keeps them off
Such a lovely family
Thanks for watching!
Loving the extra "out takes" at the end! Keep up the good work!
The size of Alaska is 665,384.04 square miles of total area, which is more than twice the size of Texas at 268,596.46 square miles. That's some big country up there.
Great vid as usual, just love the different viewpoint provided as family rather than a pure travel view, if that makes sense. Nice to see an Aussie Yellow Tail bottle although much better Aussie wines around 😁
Hey thanks for the feedback! Glad you're enjoying it! Yes, there are better wines... but this was a rare celebration bottle on our budget so it was tasty 😁
Try it early season on motorcycles. Life altering experience.
I would love to travel but I don't know people travel all over the world with bills, kids going to school, work, ect. I admire your adventures!
great adventure! love to follow along. If you need a place on the way back outside Vancouver let me know - showers and wifi etc!
Thanks so much for the offer!
Хорошая семья) Замечательные путешествия!
I couldn't get over the size of the picnic tables up there... Massive with a hole for an umbrella.
Yes! Canada goes big!
My tires say run at 35 psi cold. I set them to 33 psi. Tires are 4 years old and about 5-6mm of tread left so this was this last year of use. I averaged 70 kmh on the road to Tuk towing a 1200 lb. teardrop trailer. The trailer ran at 40 psi. No cuts, no punctures.
Yes, I was pleasantly surprised at the campground fees - $12 including wood at all Yukon campgrounds.
The card lock gas stations were not an issue for me but for some reason, the American tourists more so than anyone else (even the Europeans and Australians) had problems figuring out how to use them. 3 Americans ahead of me gave up in frustration trying to fillup at one location. Others needed coaching. Simply read and follow the instructions.
Haha just a few windshield chips? Yall are lucky to have made it this far with little damage! Ill be here in AZ when you roll back through to get it fixed up for ya! Another great vid!
Just a few ;) Thanks for the offer! Hope to make it over to PHX in February once we finish up visiting family in Tennessee.
@@LifestyleOverland Sounds good! Safe travels! Www.facebook.com/PTAGllc

Great channel!
First time I ever slept next to a river, Dosewallips!!!, here in wa... amazing place my friends...
Nothing like it!
Great job on the ending...I am eager for the next installment!!
Next episode coming at ya in 3 minutes!
I'm super jealous you were able to go all the way to Tuk. The summer route wasn't complete yet when I did the Dempster in 2015.
It was such an awesome trip. You'll definitely want to make a return run in the future. The people of Tuk were so welcoming and it was fun to meet many of them and see their way of life.
I hope to someday visit Canada,
Enjoyed the video!!! Always with the beautiful views lol!!
The end is funny with Sarah pounding that stake in.
😂😂
You may have found this out already, but the Jetboil fuel mix you’re using for the ThermoCells is not awesome for high altitudes. I highly recommend giving MSR’s mix a try. It’s a few dollars more per canister but has much better high altitude performance.
Beautiful, thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Some nice drone footage! Happy New Year!
Thanks so much!
Happy New Year. i would love to go on a trip like that I'm so jealous
Happy New Year! Everyone should make this trip once in their life... it's incredible!
Wait, what, that was 20 minutes? I was just getting into it! Can't wait for the next video!
Enjoyed the beginning of this mosquitos are evil. I appreciate the tips.
They are incredible up there! We have some strong tricks up our sleeve now.
Been enjoying you vids all around but that one was extra special. I’m not sure sure what it was. Just a great vibe...
Thanks so much!
sweet! loving it . happy new year and safe travels.
Thanks, Fez! Happy New Year!
Huh! The air down!!!!. What's with that? I ran 70psi on new goodyear wranglers all the way to Inuvik and back. It's not a hard road. No problems.
GF lives in Nelson BC and thinking of moving there. This would be a fun trip!
Loved BC!!
Tombstone is my favorite place on earth!
I know it takes at least 12 times more work than tha average "Joe" would even think of BUT awwwwg. Cliffhanger.
It's like waiting for dinner aaaall daaaay and here are some fresh veggies to tide you over.
Pretty much that means what you provide, considered entertainment by some, to others is life nurturing.......that means, really good.
Nice finish to the vid.
lol! man that is some fast and efficient. I do need a RTT though.
They're a game changer!
Great video!
Thinking about doing this drive if the covid marshal law ever lifts, but as beautiful as it is, holy smokes is that ever a long way and I have to cross Canada from Ontario to get there. What an adventure though. Love your rig. My only concern is how to cook on one of those all rain days. I have converted a 5X10 cargo trailer to a camper for that reason only. Nothing like cooking in the rain to dampen one's spirits.
BTW, I am sure you know this but bears love berries. Always keep your eyes open. Great video
Great video, thank you!
Thanks, Gilbert!
The only reason I watch ur videos is your daughter is frigging cute as hell! And I do like your videos!!
Another great video! I can't wait for the next one!
Super genial amigo ojala me mandes un saludo a Adrian, Angelica y cucushis somos de Mexico avisame si lo haces soy tu fan

Awesome..I was so looking forward to this...
Thanks for following!
My family cabin is on that road by tatchun lake ^_^
Man those backpacker thermocells suck once you get above 9-10K altitude.
How are you enjoying the Prometheus jackets? They look like they are holding up well. Enjoying mine. Hard to believe how warm they are. Enjoying your videos.
They have been incredible... and I don't get excited about clothing lol Pretty sure I've worn mine just about every day and even slept in it a few times when it was chilly. We couldn't be happier with them.
Like the way you make your video's
I believe my thermacell package say not to handle the cartridges with bare hands
