  • This engine is essentially half of the 300 Hp Miller Improved Gas Engine that is in the same building. However, it has a weird earlier valve gear. The red rotary valves are intake, valves, while the top valves are exhaust. Note that the exhaust valves are cushioned on closing(?) by air dashpots. You can see the little valve that pulls air into each dashpot. Air is exhausted through the small hole in the side of each dashpot.

It reminds me of sulzer's poppet valve design for their steam engines. Its always cool to see combustion engines with eccentric or crank driven valve gears rather than cams.

I've found this video after watching a video of the same engine. No engine type or location given, no comments allowed. This engine has got a very pleasing noise; rhythm reminds me of "Sailing on the 7 Seas" by OMD. No engines of this type that I know of in Britain, although we did have textile mills with 2 cylinders sharing one flywheel.

I've seen that video. No idea why they couldn't provide a minimal identification, and why not allow comments. Very nice videos, but you are left guessing what and where.
I know there are still several textile mill steam engines still operable in the UK, don't think anything equivalent in the US. Fair number of big Corliss engines at shows, usually running unloaded. Most engines run better with a load. Every now and then I see a video about some engine I never heard of.
This engine was restored only recently, and went through some teething issues. Running great now. Very interesting to compare it with the 600 Miller and a couple smaller Millers in the same building.

That is a unique engine. What was it used for originally?

Apparently ran a big Rand air compressor. There is a photo at 7:30 of Spring Creek Air Plant. It presumably ran an air lease (steam engines running on air to pump oil wells).

@@SteamCrane Okay. That’s pretty cool. Thank you!
