  • In today's episode, I'm done with my little Metroid detour and heading back to the Star Fox series! The Gamecube got two titles, and after Star Fox Adventures sort of went off rails, Star Fox: Assault attempts to bring things back to normal. Does it work? Let's see!

      I'd rather no more remakes and do true sequels. As much as I did enjoy Zero, I'll be happy if they make another true sequel, since Zero basically hit the 'reboot' button.
      Hopefully, whatever the NX is, will bring with it a fantastic new installment.

      If they gave us Ratchet and Clank style ground controls, let us shoot bombs from the landmaster and if they remade this on the Switch, it would be the perfect remake. Also gives the multiple paths from 64.

      I think if they expanded on the variety of ground missions a bit more, it could make for a nice mainstay for the franchise.
      It's a space opera and they're mercenaries. Makes sense that they have to battle on foot from time to time. Could lead to some nice storytelling too

      I really wished they'd have improved the on-foot stuff too.
      Like the Land Master controlled okay here. It was tanky, but it's a tank so...
      I really just hoped they'd stick with all three styles and have improved the on foot gameplay to be say... Ratchet & Clank-esque where it's more traditional of a third person shooter in terms of control?
      And more missions where you can swap between Arwing, Landmaster and on foot too. Those were always the best because of how you could take varying different approaches to them and how to go about defeating all targets.
      Frankly, I was hoping to see the series move onwards and upwards with Star Fox Zero by taking what Assault did and improving on all three styles rather than going back to just one, but it looks like they're afraid to move on beyond remaking Star Fox 64 again (when it just got a 3DS Remake not too long ago.) Like, Zero changed it up a little bit with the Walker thingy and... Other things (gimmicky shitty gyroscope controls,) but most of the game could be summed up as "Star Fox 64 HD Remake."
      Like they even went so far as to get the 64 Voice Actors again for Zero... Like... Really? The Direction's a bit better, but the voices are still mostly bad (frankly, no amount of good voice direction will save Slippy when he's literally voiced by a *woman.*)

I love the more serious tone and how it feels like they're finally taking advantage of the large scale space opera potential the series has. (Which is odd because Alesia Glidewell is a very talented actress, but I think I'd chalk that up to the voice direction more than anything else.) The Arwing sections are great, the soundtrack is amazing (it used to have my favorite version of Star Wolf's theme until Zero came around) and the writing may not be Shakespeare material but I still think it's a bit better than any other REAL Starfox games we had until then.
    I know the ground missions isn't very liked by a lot of people but I personally like them because A) you're still shooting shit up and B) Starfox is a mercenary group so, in that context, ground missions do make sense for them. I honestly wouldn't mind if they brought back the ground missions in a future game only, you know, with better controls and more mission variety.

    Star Fox Assault
    Pros:
    -*Gorgeous Soundtrack.* Really, having an orchestra preforming the entire musical score make this a memorable entry in the series.
    -Serious story, to an extent. The Big Bad isn't just some designated conqueror but an unreasonable entity that will stop at nothing to achieve its goal. Losing to these guys means Galactic annihilation not just being enslaved.
    -Replayability. It's short, which means you have plenty of chances to beat your high score. Survival means you gotta get skilled if you wanna get a *good* high score. Beat it with dying once, and it shows.
    -Star Wolf gets some love. Really, they get a more involved role in the story at large. Fans of these guys will be sated enough... add to that their theme song and Panther Carosso. (I love his character)
    Cons:
    -A little on the *too short* side. If you play games just to beat them, then you'll be done with this in a single sitting.
    -Rewards not worth the effort. If you're a solo player, *TOO BAD.* These prizes are only good for at least two people. The only single-player experience is Xevious... and it gets boring since it won't end until you die.(Near-endless shooting)
    -Land controls. Subjective matter, but I'm sure people had problems. Kinda rigid/rough. This gets resolved with replayability though. By your second/third attempt, you'll start getting used to them.
    I enjoyed the hell out of this game though, to the point that it became my favorite Gamecube title next to PPTTYD, with the greatest advantage I had being the short amount of time it takes to beat it. I stick around for Beating Gold Difficulty and trying to beat my high scores.
    Good times I had with this.
    We really need a sequel since Assault is canonically the last game in the series. I'd like to know how they'll go from there.

    I hope you're ok Johnny. Feel free to take a vacation after this marathon if you need to.
    Anyway, I want to add more context on why the on foot missions were largely disliked by critics and fans alike.
    *Starfox Assault came out in February 2005 in North America, and April 2005 in Europe.* The First Person Shooter and Third Person Shooter genres were advancing rapidly in terms of mechanics, controls, and features during that era, and *other FPS and TPS, especially those on PC and the original Xbox, made improvements to controls and mechanics that made Starfox Assault's on foot offerings look and feel instantly dated.*
    If you don't believe me, try going from Halo 2, Half Life 2, Unreal Tournament 2004, Max Payne 2,Ratchet and Clank 2 or 3, etc., to Starfox Assault.
    With how prominent the on foot missions are, that didn't help the game at all, especially when it comes to reviews.

    • @SonicTheJackrabbit
      @SonicTheJackrabbit Před 7 lety +5

      This, also the level and objective designs were handled very poorly in my opinion. 80% of the game consists of you hunting down arbitrary targets, usually hatchers, in recycled multiplayer arenas with terrible enemy placement that can cause really cheap deaths, and it gets tedious and dull quickly. Sauria and the Aparoid Homeworld particularly suffer in this department.
      Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Johnny's review but I felt like he glossed over the bigger issues this game has.

      @@GiordanDiodato Metroid Prime is played in first person where looking at your surroundings was essential. So having the primary analog stick also turn Samus made perfect sense. Starfox Assault is in 3rd person, making it a bit more awkward with turning because you have to watch the character himself turning toward the screen and there is some delay. In first person, as soon as the character sees something, you do too. Not the case in Assault.

I used the duel stick controls cuz of how I play most games now and I must say if they only put look sensitivity option on this game, the game play would have been a a lot better! Also, when I got to last boss I died 11 times in a row, the rest of the game a 🎂 🚶🏼‍♂️, but that queen put the roid in Aparoid. After finally beating her I felt a since accomplish I haven’t gotten from a game in while. I really enjoyed Star Fox: Assault & I wish they would remaster it, with extra stuff, like something to do with General Scales like this review brought out, or maybe even some sound track options, or art work of the Great Fox & difference vehicles used in the Star Fox universe, or better yet the ability to walk around in side it or explore them like in Forza Motorsports 6. I feel like the Star Fox universe has so much untapped potential. I’d buy the latest wii or whatever it came out on if they did a remaster right.

    Namco Made Ace Combat, An Arcade Flight Action game on most Playstations. The Composer for Ace Combat's Soundtrack did work on the new star fox game as well! Take a look at the Ace combats if your looking for more aerial action

      Well as an alternative, there is such a thing known as RGB Scart, which costs WAY less than an official Component cable

    • @abloogywoogywoo
      @abloogywoogywoo Před 7 lety

      NewController01 Scart is the standard in Europe. But its no where near RGB, its barely better than composite. Component, gives a far better quality.

      @davidabeats Před 7 lety +6

      Tbh, that's actually par for the course for a Star Fox game. There isn't a single game in the series that's longer than 5 hours.
      That said, this game did lack that replayability if you didn't like the multiplayer.

    • @RyansChannel0203
      @RyansChannel0203 Před 7 lety +5

      davidabeats I don't think it lacks replayability. I love revisiting the single player even if it's linear and the multiplayer is beyond awesome.

      because the most vocal of starfox fans bash it for having ground missions. Personally I would have liked more starfox games based around this template of arwing, Landmaster and on-foot missions with a more intriguing story.
