Another good stream. Seeing the nitty gritty deep dive into how the byzantines became a continuation of rome in their own way is fascinating.

The hole that Columba dug for himself just shows a lack of understanding of human nature being self destructive no matter the civilisation. It was a hell of an achievement that the Byzantine empire managed to survive as it did for as long as it did. What is there to be frustrated about, humans do stupid shit and civilisations die and get replaced. I would have rather lived in Byzantium than any equivalent South American empire.

Apostolic Majesty or Columba do you plan to make a reading list or something similar?
I asked because most of the time people talk about the classics but I don´t really know what is included it would be very helpful if one or both of you could help me.
I know that Hilaire Belloc speaks in one of his book about a (Roman/Catholic Canon),
And of the Civilizational split between the Catholics and Protestants in Europe.
I am manly interested in the Roman Catholic View but I have also an interest in the Ghibellines position.
I know it is a big question however hope one of you can help me.

A reading list is a good idea. I'll try and talk to AM about it. Belloc is good for understanding the split, as is Evola. Chesterton is also great.

Basil the Macedonian famously claimed to have ancestry from: an Armenian king, from Constantine the Great and from Alexander the great (!) simply because he wanted to add legitimacy to his usurped throne. Of course such lineage was impossible to be established and both the evidence and modern scholarship suggest that Basil I was most probably of a mixed Armenian (father) and Greek (mother) ancestry, while there is no actual evidence that he spoke any Armenian at all.
From Mavrikios onwards all emperors were either Greek, either half-Greek or at the least totally Hellenized, otherwise they simply wouldn't be accepted as the rulers. By the end of late antiquity, in order to be accepted as a "Basileus Romaion" one had to 1) speak fluent Greek, 2) have Greco-roman cultural values and 3) be a Chalcedonian Christian. These three components together, made someone a true "Romaios".

The Charlemagne series got me to reload and play MTW2 as France, this series got me to load a VASSAL engine version of the old SPI PRESTAGS.
As with the Charlemagne series, this one really does a great job. No way I would be able to do all the reading to get such a grand overview with all the interconnections and get battles and events put into context. Also, appreciate the inherent language and origin of words lessons.
This channel is a real service.
Be interested to know what would be good revisionist book treatments that more fairly evaluate the Byzantines, especially from Marcus' perspective.

I can see where Columbo is coming from. If it wasnt for Constantinople it probably would have fallen long before it did. Perhaps as early as 610 AD or smth.

Its impossible to summarize 300+ years of Byzantine history in 2 hours and 39 minutes (especially in an informal group discussion format). You guys did the best you could but you glossed over ALOT of crucial details. I appreciate the effort though.

Kings and Generals is a good introduction to military history, and they've got some solid normie tier content, but their strength lies in early modern, medieval and ancient history. Past the 18th century the channel has little to commend itself (unless you're looking for a tactical overview of the Winter War etc.), so it doesn't surprise me that they bent the knee.

    • @ApostolicMajesty
