TRAINING DAY & PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK 4K/BLU-RAY REVIEWS

  • 4K UHD Blu-ray review to the new release of Antoine Fuqua's 2001 cop thriller 'Training Day' starring Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke. Aspect ratio is 2.40:1 (approx.) and sound is Dolby Atmos. Also, the forthcoming 4K release of Peter Weir's influential mystery from 1975 'Picnic At Hanging Rock' from Second Sight Films is previewed with the help of two pre-production Blu-rays which are impressively good quality. Two versions of the film, one on each disc. First is the theatrical cut which comes with original 1.0 mono sound or twin track mono as an option. Aspect ratio is 1.66:1 which necessitates thin black bars at the sides on 16x9 television sets. The Director's Cut of the film is on the second disc and this comes with DTS 5.1 sound. Film makers are still imitating the look of 'Picnic At Hanging Rock' and I therefore point to the recent 4K release of 'Don't Worry Darling' as one suggestion to see how it is still being imitated today and also, 'Missing' from 1981 where the same look was used.

Dominic Husband sent me the following comment which pointed me to a discussion about the restoration of 'Picnic At Hanging Rock' which gives much information and illustration of how Second Sight Films achieved such accurate and wonderful image quality for their new release: "Did you see this video about the restoration? • Case study: Restoring ... from Cineteca Bologna? I'm a huge fan of the novel as well, so owning another edition as part of the 4k/HD Blu-ray set will be well worth it. Have added Training Day to my list! All the best, Dominic Husband."

Funny, when I first watched Training Day as a young man, I didn't care too much for it. Now, I can say I really enjoy it. Hawke and Washington are superb, and the way it's shot feels very close to the characters; LA is a constant background presence, but the car and the men in it are the main attraction. I also think this disc is a beauty - the picture is stunning.

35mm at its best I think James. We need to get back to that and it's good to see that many movies shot on video today are getting closer to the look. Not quite as natural looking on all movies shot on video yet, but we're getting there. John.

Thanks for that video, John! Curses, though! Seeing your discussion about Picnic at Hanging rock convinced me to switch my order from the 4K standard edition to the limited edition!! 😆Picnic at Hanging Rock is absolutely one of my favourite films. I've loved it for the better part of 30 years. Few films manage to be so ethereally beautiful, yet have the beating heart of a horror film. One of my best friends, who introduced me to the film, actually wrote his college dissertation on Picnic and associated 1970s Australian New Wave films. The film didn't exactly scare me, but after my first viewing, it crept into my subconscious and gave me some pretty trippy nightmares for a few days. I'm most thrilled that this release includes the theatrical cut, which is my own preferred version. I've been reliant on a not-too-lovely SD broadcast master of that cut on the old Second Sight DVD for years. I think, in a perfect world, a compromise film meeting half way between the two versions would be the perfect film. I think the Peter Weir's revisionism cut too deep and there were moments I really loved, such as the girl crying in the church, which were needed. I wish more directors would be generous enough to allow the original versions to be released and to have the same level of love and attention paid to them that their revisionist versions do. The restoration work and new colour grade sound fascinating. Did you see this video about the restoration? czcams.com/video/GtaRhk9Ea6M/video.html from Cineteca Bologna? I'm a huge fan of the novel as well, so owning another edition as part of the 4k/HD Blu-ray set will be well worth it. Have added Training Day to my list! All the best, Dominic Husband. 🙂

I believe the reason Training Day looks so different on 4K is due to there being a new transfer made with the colour supposedly better representing the theatrical prints. The blu-ray was mastered from the same transfer used for the initial DVD release which for some reason changed the colours so I am led to believe by Films At Home.
You'll be glad to hear I was in HMV Belfast this weekend and managed to record a few clips from the ground floor, mainly the 4K section and entrance. I would have loved to record more angles however it was particularly crowded which restricted what shots I could get so some reshoots may be necessary.

Oh, I was just wondering about the Belfast HMV ever getting one of in there to shoot some video last night because I'd very much like to see it. I can't wait!
I didn't know Jeff had concluded the same as I about Training Day. I do think people have too often based their opinions on previous home video releases but to be fair to them, that's all most have ever known because not many of us have had film projection in the home to give us a keener eye for such things. I'd sit in cinemas and compare how films looked to how other titles looked at home on Super 8. VHS, LaserDisc and DVD never seemed to have the same look as a film and I learned that that was because they'd been taken from cine transfers of low contrast prints. This was so they could be mastered to be brighter and more colourful for television broadcasts and home video releases. Many Blu-rays seem to have come from low contrast prints but I don't suppose that is the case any longer now that home equipment can handle the more realistic look of film.

Morning James. I've seen an interesting CZcams video where at an Aussie festival of some sort the Second Sight Films colourist talks about getting the director and DP involved in the grading of the new release and he does say that they were upset with all previous releases which had changed the colours of the Australian landscape to look lush and green as we would normally see in Western Europe but Australia doesn't have those colours. It seems that you'll find the Second Sight release looks vastly different to the Criterion if this is correct. The original colour palette complete with the yellow hue from the dyed veil camera filters is back for the first time since the original 35mm release prints. John.

I hope it looks just as it did in cinemas Darryl but it would be impossible to make any video transfer an exact replica. It's difficult enough getting different batches of film prints of the same film to look identical so no chance with a video. I find I'm not particularly interested in awards after last year's Oscars. They'd already become a bit of a farce but that was the final straw for me. John Hurt spoke about how the Oscars are decided in an interview I saw recently (extras on the 4K of The Elephant Man I think) and it's all a bit of a cartel and who knows who, what's in it for me type of game so we probably shouldn't take much notice of them. Seems an upgrade is a must on this as my blu ray dosn't look the greatest but you really got me on P at HR! I saw half of this one rainy afternoon on a movie channel but didn't finish. Weir always interested me for some reason really enjoying Master and Commander then Loving and again being drawn into The year of Living Dangerously, I think if possible Picnic should be in my collection. The Blu-ray in the Training Day 4K box looks just like a typical home video to me Dave. Overly bright with enhanced colours and it's not how I'd have expected to see a film looking in a cinema in that era or ever really. If a film had have come on at The Empire looking like that Blu-ray I'd have thought the film makers were either beginners or idiots! the 4K looks just like I'd imagine a 35mm master print to look. As for Picnic At Hanging Rock, I'd very much like that special set because it looks beautiful and it's a special one-of-a-kind film. But the Blu-ray discs I've been sent are special themselves and if they'd have had a '4K' label on them I'd have believed it. I can see how the density of a 4K will be even better but the reality is, it really doesn't need to be any better than the Blu-ray. At £19.99 the standard Blu-ray release seems like a very good deal to me.

I feel like it's been both a blessing and a curse for Antoine Fuqua and David Ayer though, since neither of them has made a film that's quite as memorable in the last twenty years.

I thought Training Day was pretty great when I saw it in the theater, and it still held up for me on a recent viewing. I am really interested in getting the 4K, as I think the Blu-ray of Training Day is just about the oldest Blu-ray I own, and it sounds like this new release really makes a difference. While Training Day may be the most memorable film of both the writer and director, they have each done some work since that in my opinion is quite strong and memorable, especially Southpaw and The Equalizer for Fuqua, and End of Watch and Fury for Ayer.
I am also really interested in that release of Picnic at Hanging Rock. I am also a fan of Peter Weir, and I first saw the film over twenty years ago. I actually revisited it recently on HBO Max, and I think I liked it even more this time around. I do think I will want to own it and watch it again, but I will have to decide whether to get a release that limits me to just the one player in the house (my 4K player is also my all-region player), or whether to go with the Criterion Blu-ray which I will be able to play in several different locations.

I very much liked The Equalizer and I think I prefer it to Training Day but I'd have to watch them both again to be sure. I also very much like End of Watch which is a really hard hitting cop movie. Possibly the hardest hitting I can ever remember actually. Fury was a damned fine film too.

As for David Ayer directing Suicide Squad, I haven't seen it but it didn't sound like it would be the best use of two hours of my time so I have avoided it in favour of other films that may be a more agreeable couple of hours. No one sets out to make a bad film though and he probably thought the film would turn out a little different to how it did. Things happen during film making and compromises have to be made. Its not a flawless technology, especially when underused or colours are radically changed. But overall my experiences have been positive so far. The worst is the absence of HDR in some scenes when the rest of the film is very vibrant, or atleast the perception thereof, which can be quite jarring. Thinking of The Eternals 4K, there were some very strange choices on that disc. Specifically some of the scenes toward the end, around the birthing of the eternal. One is used exclusively for cine to video transfers as it has a manual focus ring which is vital for the task. Owing to the trio of CMOS chips the colour reproduction is accurate and Kodachrome film transfers come out just like Kodachrome so no need to mess about with any colour correction or contrast levels afterwards. Makes the whole process that much simpler.

It is interesting to see that the UK version of TD has coloured artwork for both the 4k and bluray. Furthermore, the hardcase comes with 4k HD lettering compared to just the Bluray case in the US version. I wonder how is that possible for Warner to make special adjustments just for Europe version? Seems like in Europe has very strict requirements for studios so that customers don't get short changed for what they pay for. Interesting, I just hope one day they also get rid of the UK blue ray region coding too. Why can't US also follow the consumer guidelines like in UK.

Conversely, the North American market get titles that don't get released here and different versions of films owing to the certification requirements in the various markets. But there is a simple solution to dealing with the zone codes on Blu-rays and that's to get an all zone player. I plan to get a new one for just that functionality soon. John.

@@moviecollector5920 Yes I have a "B" player too that's how I can still play "B" region blue rays. What's my main comment here is I am amazed that the "value for money" in terms seems better in UK versions of the discs. Wether it's slipcase's or artwork. Even if you consider PAL vs NTSC pal technically has a superior clarity in terms of signals compared to NTSC. So for someone getting UK versions of the discs actually getting a better overall quality of the film. However, I realised that most US versions of the blue rays are manufactured in Mexico while the UK versions are in Poland. Does this mean that for UK versions the master copy of both the 4K version and Bluray are secondary copies of the master copy? Or does the studio's that develop separate master copies for both 4K and 2K for Europe/UK versions? This is because I notice that when it comes to resale of the movies globally, there is this narrative that its getting a US version of the disc is better than UK/europe as the master copies done by the studio's originates from a US supervision compared to the one done in Poland. Personally I don't buy to this narrative but it's an interesting point to consider if you wish to resell your movies later globally to anyone.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Před rokem +1

@@mygumybear All the mainstream disc releases apart from DVD are now NTSC the world over as it has a frame rate of 23.97 which equates to the standard 24 fps of film exhibition in cinemas. PAL is 25 fps and although superior in standard definition owing to having 100 more lines, that is no longer the case with high definition and ultra high definition. As for the glass master for any disc to be pressed, that master is created from a master supplied from elsewhere so the laboratories being used to replicate the discs don't really matter unless a lab is somehow turning out inferior quality discs which seems unlikely. I've had discs replicated here in the UK and in Austra in the past and there was no perceptible difference in quality in any way. Where we do have perceptions about one product being better than another is when different markets get different versions of films released on 4K disc. I suspect this is partially due to our propensity to think that the grass is always greener on the other side. 'Cliffhanger' is a good example because the North American release came with Dolby Atmos sound but the UK release did not. As the film never had Dolby Atmos in the first place I wouldn't have cared a jot but some got quite hot under the collar about it. We got a 5.1 soundtrack whereas the release I saw at the cinema was Dolby Stereo Spectral Recording which is matrixed four channel stereo with improved noise reduction applied and I always considered that to be the best surround sound I ever heard on a LaserDisc. I don't think anything ever needed to be done to that soundtrack but for continued appeal to the masses I suppose it's been updated to the latest system over the years.
One little piece of information from when I has having discs replicated, Sony, Falcon and JVC manufactured discs fared best in soak tests. This tested for durability when exposed to elements at higher rates such as infra red light. The three stated were the only discs that passed the 100 year mark. In other words, none of these discs will last forever but some are better than others.

The 4K didn't look overly colourful in here. The Blu-ray did though. All our systems are different and are setup differently too. The first thing I did with this new projector was reign the excessive colour saturation back in to something a little more realistic. Most won't have done this because every demonstration I've ever seen has the colour whacked right up. Ridiculous. Training Day was muted and almost dull looking at times in here and to me it looked like a film. Brilliant to look at. Maybe see if you can get the colour down on your system Lenny and give that 4K another go. You might find your old Blu-ray looks even better then too.

@@moviecollector5920 It's not about color or saturation, it's about it being entirely in the wrong spectrum so to say. For an example if you remember 1999 film Payback, that Brian Helgeland wasn't allowed at first to release the way he wanted. The theatrical cut had a blueish steely tone, and when the studio finally allowed him to make his director's cut, besides having an entirely different third act and many scenes changed, he decided to differentiate it further by giving it this warm, orange color grade, about the same as was now done without reason for Training Day.
