LATEST 4K PURCHASES + MATRIX RESURRECTIONS 4K UHD REVIEW

  • A visit to the Swindon HMV resulted in seven additions to my 4K UHD collection. Reviews to some or perhaps all of these will be coming soon but until then all are shown in this video. A few weeks prior to this I purchased the 4K of The Matrix Resurrections for just £9.99 and as this was one title many people had asked me to review when it was first released I decided to finally give it a try. It's a disappointment but I do think the image quality has the edge over the 1999 original. Both films retain the dowdy, dystopian look which is a part of the whole story and atmosphere. The 2021 movie suffered at the box office due to the Covid debacle but after the first 30 to 45 minutes, which I was enjoying, I thereafter found it a bit of a slog. The expected ending which would have saved the whole thing did not materialize and it just went off. My wife summed it up as soon as the end credits rolled, 'Pointless!' But the sound is a high point and if you have a big subwoofer you should very much enjoy the thumping soundtrack.
    HMV Swindon always gives good service and this latest visit was no exception. You will see a couple of shots of the 4K shelves within this video.

      @@ArnoldTohtFan I didn't like Pulp Fiction when it was first released and that is what kept me away from any of Mr. Tarantino's other films. But I never forgot the Travolta self-mockery dance sequence so when Clark Teddles got a shot of that scene from the projection box of The Ritz (I think) in Sydney, I thought it was time to give it a second chance. I still don't like that one disgusting scene but I was prepared for it this time and enjoyed the rest of the film. I've watched a couple more since then and because of his efforts to return film back into cinemas I'm happy to finally be enjoying some of his work. I understand the hatred for Matrix Resurrections, but i cant bring myself to hate it, i loved what it was, i found myself smiling when it started showing the montage of company executives trying to tell Neo what was an wasnt important in the matrix.

      We watched it two evenings back. At 10 feet wide the image isn't particularly good actually but it's better than it looks in reality because it is how I remember it on Super 8 which means the slightly washed out look was a deliberate choice and exactly how the film should look. I've never been much of a gangster film fan. I don't like all the scheming, murderous, treachery that goes on in them and although I can appreciate a good film even if I don't like it, I'd rather not watch people being treated the way they often are in gangster films. 'Casino' is the one that I found hardest to watch. I thought it was 'orrible and I haven't seen it since its original theatrical outing. But many people love it and were excited when it got a 4K home video release. It did make me feel like giving it another chance but I can't forget how I felt seeing people being forced to dig their own graves before being clubbed to death with baseball bats.

    You are still my favorite reviewer. I really enjoy your more laid back reviews on physical media. Again I wish we had something like HMV here in the U.S. with its massive physical media shops. But we do have some pretty good online shopping such as Amazon and a new online shop called Gruv which has some good deals. And I've had some pretty good luck buying used physical media the latest being The Blues Brothers which is the best I've ever seen it on 4k and I saw it at the show. I am a huge fan of James Bond movies and I have yet to see any of the earlier Bond films released on 4k. They do look pretty good on blu-ray but a 4k upgrade would be a great improvement and add to the enjoyment of these classic films. Thanks John. Not many presenters on CZcams answer comments and you do so with dignity and respect and I appreciate that. Have a great afternoon.

      Good afternoon Daniel. I think a lot (if not all) of the Bond Blu-rays are from 4K cine to video transfers but I expect they'll all get the full 4K treatment in the end. I don't know how many of them I'd re-purchase in 4K but probably the two Timothy Dalton's would be top of the list.
      Don't forget that Bull Moose chain in the North Eastern USA. At least they have a few physical stores. There must be other around but perhaps HMV will make it south of the border from Canada soon and open up in a few major city centres. I don't use Amazon for anything. I don't like what they've been doing to our country so it's my little one man protest I suppose.

    Funny that I also bought Matrix Ressurrection recently after initially not being interested. But could not leave it at €9.99 here. Bought two others in the three at €30 deal, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and a stunning looking The Pianist which looks absolutely amazing and comes highly recommended as a movie and quality wise.

      @moviecollector5920  Před 17 dny +1

      Morning Pieter. We watched 'Ferrari' the other evening and both thoroughly enjoyed it. It's not up to the great standards of 'Le Mans '66' but it would make a nice first film in a double bill of the two. The makers have captured the crazy world of sports car racing in the 1950's and particularly the completely nuts Mille Miglia. Flat out racing on open roads. Horrifying really.
      I don't know the Godfather films well at all. I've only ever spun those LaserDiscs once but I suspect I'll enjoy them a whole lot more these days. I never even got any of the Super 8 releases so my knowledge of how they ever looked is practically non-existent. It would take someone with an unfaded 35mm print to be able to compare the 4K's accurately. Actually, the Super 8 cut downs rather than the Super 8 feature might be good representations because many of those Marketing Films releases were on low fade stock even in the late 1970's but only the cut downs. Their features were done by another lab I think and all seem to have faded.

      I will probably only scan through much of the Raiders 4K as I don't tend to watch movies on video when I have them on film. The film prints are special and it's always so much fun to run them. I have quite a list of Super 8 features that I need to run again and Raiders is one of them but so is Highlander and Aliens.
      As for seeing films at cinemas today, very rarely are you seeing films as most can only project video now. This is a big reason why the quality has suffered so much. There was a big downgrade in 2011 and the industry is paying the price for that now with the terminal decline well and truly making inroads. I'm hopeful we can turn it around but it needs someone with knowledge and enthusiasm to guide cinemas on what to do.

      It was good to see you posting videos again recently Andy. Interestingly, many people have told me they think The Matrix is one of their favourite/best 4K discs. It's nowhere near in my collection but I think projecting to almost ten feet wide tends to sort out the wheat from the chaff whereas a telly can make almost anything look fabulous. I suppose a few people have 8 foot wide tellies so they might be able to discern the best from the least best more easily. The sound on the Resurrections was its best element but I found myself so bored by it as it droned on for far too long. Then the ending didn't happen and at that point the first credit appeared, Susie said one word: 'Pointless'. That summed it all up far too well for me but I'm pleased to see on here that many people do very much enjoy it.

Then The Matrix came out and it got all the plaudits for originality... but it didn't feel very original to me as. I never really thought that much of The Matrix Mike but I do appreciate it. It seemed to get a lot of younger people thinking along the lines that I had for years by then. Surely they can't really be considering a fifth instalment after 'Resurrections'? I think they've already taken it too far but would have succeeded with the fourth film if they'd used the intended ending. At least, I presume they intended to end with a return to the real world and Keanu Reeves's character receiving congratulations on producing a fourth instalment of the Matrix video games.
      'The Moon' arrived two days ago and the steelbook looks wonderful. I haven't opened it yet but we may actually watch that one this evening. We watched 'Ferrari' on Wednesday evening and both being a pair of classic car fans, we loved it. The 1967 Mille Miglia doesn't take up much of the movie's total running time but it's still a bit of a difficult watch. 1000 miles of flat out racing on open roads seems ridiculous today but parts of Africa still have open road rallying so it still goes on.

    Greetings from Santiago de Chile. I saw "The Matrix" twice at the cinema in a now far away 1999. Then I watch it in DVD and for the technical standards of early 2000 it look and sound quite good. But it's 4K edition was awesome in terms of sound and image. "Matrix Resurrctions" had a good 4K edition and was fun, but allthough it had all the technical advantages of XXI cinema did not look so spectacular as the movie from 1999 or the sequels. To be honest I don't see where the more than US$100 million budget go, and the funny part is that you can see movies shot with less money and that look far better. I just watched my 4K copy of First Blood a few days ago! It looked alright on 4K to me. It had a lot of nice detail in the picture from what I could tell. I had a bit of trouble with the HDR and black levels with this one for some reason. I'm noticing this with my 4K's lately. I'm trying to figure out what settings on my TV are causing this. As for the movie, I consider it the best in the series. First Blood had a message to it. I think it was meant to be thought provoking on what to do about all the veterans who returned from the Vietnam War and felt like outcasts. Who's at fault in that? There's a line in the middle of the movie, Rambo is in the dark and says "They drew first blood...". I always take that line as the major thought of the movie, "Who drew first blood?", not just for Rambo situation, but for all the vets who are alone in the dark and suffering. Is the government and country doing anything about it or do we ignore their existence? The other Rambo movies don't have the same level of thoughtfulness, in my opinion. They are just loud war action movies. I personally could never get into the sequels, I found myself zoning out soon after. I'm not a big fan of war movies to begin with.

      There are so many settings on equipment and even more when it comes to 4K because of HDR. But it's the necessity to check a disc looks its best that makes 4K different and more like film collecting than any other home video format that's gone before. LaserDisc was probably the most exciting up to 4K simply because the packaging was so good and the big shiny silver (or gold in the case of the two 'ABBA Gold' releases) discs were so special.
      We watched 'Ferrari' last night and the dimly lit interior scenes in that look poor. I fiddled but couldn't improve them much, if at all. Some tellies might handle that disc well and it could be the same with 'First Blood'. But Ferrari was still a great night in at the cinema.

      @moviecollector5920  Před 16 dny

      @@simonfilmfan4899 No Simon. This is how they should be. Remember that tellies and home video equipment hasn't been able to display the equivalent of film imagery until relatively recently. One of the reasons film has always been superior is because they're darker owing to the increased contrast range and almost infinite colour. Now that a basic telly can just about produce cinema imagery the studios are able to supply it in home video form. I never thought I'd see the day. Blu-ray doesn't have the same capability as 4K so Blu-ray is still lying to us (as is DVD of course) but the 4K discs aren't. If you're having trouble getting them to display properly start fiddling with all the myriad settings and keep going until you start to get a handle on it. Then you will find you'll start making incremental improvements to the point that you won't believe how good it is.

      Don't be shocked about my summary of the imagery of the Matrix films because the reality is that the 4K's are excellent it's just the films never looked particularly good in the first place. It was a stylistic choice to make them look like a dystopian, otherworldly setting. It worked in that regard but the dull, lacklustre look didn't exactly make The Matrix stand out for me in the way that it did for others. I think they both probably look better on a telly unless you've got one that's 8 feet wide perhaps.
      We both very much enjoyed 'Ferrari'. It's not 'Le Mans '66' that's for sure but it accurately captures the era and the nature of the ridiculous Mille Miglia races. I'm quite knowledgeable about the road racing and rallying of days gone by and as much as it's hard to believe it really did go on the way it's depicted it was actually quite a bit worse. In 1970 the World Cup Rally traversed 16,000 miles on open roads. 130mph through great swathes of South America was achieved by the quickest cars. Watch out for donkeys and mountain goats!
