Former Olympic champion gymnast Gabby Douglas returned to competition for the first time in eight years at the American Classic in Texas, where she qualified for a spot at the U.S. Championship with a chance at joining Team USA in Paris.

She's not a "former Olympic champion," once someone is an Olympic champion, they're an Olympic champion for life. You can say "2012 Olympic All-around Champion," or you can say "Olympic Champion" Come on guys, you definitely know better.

I can see it both ways. You are right in that. She is an Olympic champ. They do the same with others too, like Michael Phelps, for example. But, oftentimes people apply it like they would other sports. "Former World Series Champions." Or former heavyweight world champion Muhammad Ali (I don't know any other boxing champs lol). Gabby's not the reigning champ, I guess you can say.
