Scotty Kilmer I own a boxer powered bus and it never break down in 36 years!(basically one time because the battery was flat )
Scotty Kilmer what is your take on "plasma" spark plugs and/or ignition systems? Also what do you think of reusable/washable oil filters?
Scotty Kilmer hey scotty what do you think about the 305 and 350 engines that they used in chevy caprice classic cars from 1980 till 1990 ?
I see Scotty's twilight career as a stand up comedian! My wife loves the humorous pics he inserts!
I would say do two of these per week. These are awesome videos that have a ton of info in them. I like it more than the short videos on the livestream.
"Its basically an old design"
You mean, like a piston engine?
Compared to Tesla most cars these days is a 150 year old design -)
🤔😂😂😂
The only new engine (20th century) is a rotary. The rest are 19th century
@@daves984 but rotary is unreliable :(
@Paul JJ nota bene electric engines are as old as piston engines (if not older).
Just remember kids if it's not an early - mid 90s Toyota it's the worst car ever.
its kinda right tho thats the sad part
They do blow gaskets tho theres no pretending like that doesnt happen
Toyota was and is the most reliable car on the market
@@fearedlegend i wish they still made affordable fun cars tho like a fun fwd or a new mr2 but theres no denying they are the most reliable
lolno
I bought my 99 Impreza with 200,000 miles on it and have put many more on it. All I've had to do was a water pump so far. I was scared with all the headgasket stories but I absolutely love my Subaru and wouldn't trade it for anything. They're also surprisingly easy to work on too.
still happy with it? im looking at an 05 Impreza
I have a 1999 Subaru Legacy with the 2.2 best car I've ever owned still going strong in 2023
Got a 99 forester here, changed the head gaskets and fixed quite a few other problems. Engine was driven to death by the previous owner so it's not exactly perfect anymore (Weird coolant system issues caused by past overheating). But it has over 320,000 miles on it and counting.
Apparently you have to re torque the heads every hundred thousand miles or so
Fun fact: the inline 4 cylinder was invented before the boxer engine. So going by your logic the inline 4 is older technology.
yeah!
I have 2 Subarus. A 4 and a 6. The sounds of both is wicked cool and the reliability has been 100%. The boxer design is awesome. Big props to Porsche and Subaru for sticking with it.
Subarus are cool, and so are Porsche’s. And if you’re willing to take care of them you’ll have some of the most visceral cars out there.
But Scottie is right. Boxers are kind of quirky and there is a reason why the industry largely avoids them. Just like rotary engines. Boxers are hard to work on, prone to gaskets warping, and prone to burning oil. That’s not necessarily bad when you know what you’re doing, but kind of a hassle for the everyday consumer. Even Porsche doesn’t use them for their bread and butter Cayenne and Machan and Panamera cars opting to use V6 and V8’s instead.
Subaru’s has never been and will never be more reliable than their Honda and Toyota counterparts and the Boxer motor is a large part of that.
With all that being said, never let go of your Subies, they are awesome cars and the sounds they make are completely mental.
2010 outback flat 4, love it, the cvt is just amazing
The old pushrod engine Subarus were amazingly easy to work on. Adjusting the valves was easy, and everything was up top except the the oil drain plug and the oil filter, which was right in front.
And they were absolutely reliable.
How long ownwd?
@Jack McAvoy After 2009, the 2.5 H4 had no more HG problems than any other car. The 3.0 and 3.6 H6 are as reliable as they come, having a lifetime timing chain and almost no HG issues.
wait til i tell you when the wheel was invented

Content lmfao. Good one 😂👊🏼

Why do you think the Canadians switched to square wheels. (thanks Southpark)

I've owned 3 Subarus over a 40 year period and they are one of the most reliable cars on the planet.
Well they "subaru" are owned by toyota, and some of there junk is cheap china junk, 130,000 your gonna do a head job.every time , not on my G.m. cars and pickups.
@@mikestanly749 Cheap china junk? I loved my GM cars but man are you dense if you think these cars are "cheap china junk". Japanese engineers don't equate to Chinese engineers.
@@mikestanly749 The head gasket issue was mostly w/ the DOHC naturally aspirated engines that ran in the early 2000s in certain models. I've driven three Subarus past 200k miles, and a couple more past 150k and never had head gasket failure in any. (I also didn't have the notorious SOHC 2.5, mind you.) Consumer Reports still ranks the brand as very reliable. They are incredibly safe, and have an AWD system that few can rival.
Patrick Lee *head gaskets have left the chat*
mike stanly not 40 years ago they weren’t. Not even 20 years ago...
My 2004 Subi WRX Turbo was very fast and crazy reliable. I sold it, all original, with no repairs to the engine other than the standard stuff such as alternator, belts, water pump, timing chain and associated bearings, and I sold it still running good with with 340K miles on it. Take care of your car and it will take care of you! Good vid, thank you!!
What gas station did you go to? What oil brand and weight did you use and what were your oil change intervals?
I have the same car same year. My body is falling apart, but mechanically it's been the best car I've ever had. 209k miles. Original clutch, everything. Did timing belt and turbo service. That's it
Many years ago I had an Alfa Romeo 33 ti (boxer engine).
And now a Subaru Impreza .... There is indeed something enchanting about them .
I had a 33 1.7 s
And now i have a legacy !
Are you a cook?
I've had 4 VW bugs, a VW bus, 2 subarus and a BMW R90/6 (with 2 cyl boxer motor).
I've a legacy. Had 6 Subaru's. Thirsty but a 4x4, go well.
Reasons why boxers are great engines:
1) lower center of gravity for better handling
2) they can produce reasonable HP and torque if engineered correctly
3) Today’s boxer engine are fuel efficient and smoother than yesterday’s boxer that Scotty is talking about.
Drive a new Subaru! You’ll be impressed.
V A I did. I wasn't.
@@officialWWM I drive em at work, they are the stock liberties and such. The Toyota camrys are heaps better in form and function. Can't deny the AWD pull is nice but eh. Every Subaru I ever been in squeeks
[R E D A C T E D] they sound like they have a miss in the engine...from the factory :/
I had a crosstrek 2L petrol auto very smooth to drive and powerful, low emmission on awd. It drives like a luxury.
@@warmage247 haven't been in mine then.
The head gasket issue that Subaru had was because of a defective head gasket they put on the cars but they haven't used that head gasket for more than a decade
Its interesting to me that Scotty downplays the significance of the boxer engine since Porsche has won dozens of motorsports championships and that they are almost exclusively used by all small aircraft worldwide...not to mention that Subaru won the world rally car championship for several years with this boxer engine...
Well that's good but most of us regular consumers who wants reliable and little newer car.
Superb design for aircraft and great for low center of gravity in cars. That plus their light weight nature can mitigate the relatively low power output as compared with other vehicles
Konstantin boxer engines are just as good as other designs so long as they are properly maintained.
@@kostya0812 See thats whats confusing to me. Scotty basically makes this same claim in the video, and he says it has to do with the fact that boxer engines are old technology that havent seen as many advancements. However, I'm not sure if he's completely correct about this, and he didn't go in to much detail besides the head gasket problem (I've had head gaskets go on all my non boxer engines so I'm not sure about this either).
Could you possibly provide some detail beyond what Scotty provided, and maybe give a clear reason as to exactly why a "regular consumer who wants a reliable and little newer car" wouldn't want a boxer engine? As an average consumer who wants the most reliable engine possible, I'd like to know the reason. I'm genuinely curious as I'm sure you and Scotty are correct, I'm just not sure why.
Because they have so many issues in Subarus. The Subaru designs are cheaper than the Porsche ones. They leak, they burn oil and they throw rods left right and center.
Hey scotty why r you not recording in 4k. 1080 is an old design like the boxer engine
Good one
😂😂
Because it takes more time, space, and money to work with 4k. Not really worth it if you don't need the detail. Now if scotty did videos about ants or little toy cars, maybe then its worth it but not here.

Exactly. How many naturally aspirated engines engines make 100 HP/litre like the BRZ? Certainly not his wife's POS.
I've chopped BRZ's and 86's in my Suzuki Swift.... Until 3rd gear, GO the hustler hatch!
@Physic Studios Your engine is most likely a 2.8 litre as opposed to the 2 litres of the 86/BRZ, and the standard golf VR6 is about 80kg lighter. So those results are pretty unsurprising.
No one cares how fast your car is. Having a powerful motor is not an accomplishment. A teenager can swap motors or install a turbo. It's not impressive. Making a car handle like a sportscar is a real accomplishment, that takes extensive engineering and testing. And BTW slapping some springs and bars onto a Civic doesn't make it handle like a real sportscar.

because scotty kilmer is full of crap = no wonder they lost the WAR !
He's practicing up for his review of the old 'Spitz' 2-cycle bicycle engine.
Porsche was thinking about ditching the 911 entirely and replacing it with the 928. Has nothing to do with the boxer engine. A flat 6 still got the gt2 rs around the ring in record time. The V engine predates the boxer by 8 years so do we call v configurations "old technology?" Also until Porsche 919 broke the record, the 962 also had the overall record with a flat 6 and was the most successful endurance car of its time. Boxer engines were great for endurance racing for reliability.
I’ve driven most 4x4s, in bad conditions, in the Pacific Northwest, nothing is as good as a Subaru. A massive part of that is because on twisty, hilly roads the boxer engine sits low between the front tires. It’s not trying to breakaway on corners. When it snows in my area, Subarus are just about the only vehicles out and about (and there are a lot here!)
Blown head gasket issues were due to a single layer gasket, which has been fixed with using the multilayer head gasket.
My new Subaru Ascent has a 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer-4 engine makes 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, and it definitively doesn't feel under powered, that's more horsepower than my V8 Durango that I still drive.
Same here. Wish I could get that engine in my foresters too
The main reason that VW discontinued the Air Cooled Boxer engine in 1975 in the Beetle was due to emissions compliance, not for any mechanical shortcomings. Plus it was still made in Brazil into the 2000's. It also never even had head gaskets. I could never understand why the Corvair was deemed a failure, when it was essentially of a copy of the Beetle which went on to sell multiple millions more after Nader destroyed the Corvair. And the Porsche, which is a Beetle design on Meth, is still produced today. And if Subaru and Porsche are selling them today as fast as they can make them, how can it be outdated? I am sure if Toyota made them you would be jerking off to them 24/7.
Corvair 32/68 weight distribution is unbalanced
That'll be one slippery snek of a car.
The Corvair had enough power to make the swing axle design cause problems that weren't apparent at
It is my understanding the "bottom end" of the air cooled VW engine is way, wayyyyyy overbuilt. Guys that use these engines on sand rail dragster can often get 400HP with a stock crank and journals.
I love BMWs boxer. Owned one for years. It's a very torquey but very boring motor. Has a nice panther like growl when you give it the beans though.
I think the main reason boxers have gone aways is the same reason V engines are going away.
Accountants.
Twice as many cam chains
Twice a many cylinder heads
Twice as many camshafts.
I used to road-race the Corvair (organized road racing was popular in the 1950s - 60s). If you backed off the accelerator while in a TIGHT turn, the swing axle system would 'tuck up' on the inside of the turn causing a severe over-steer condition for the rest of the car when that tucked rear wheel took on its normal weight load .... for a high probability of an 'instant snap' 180° skid. For normal driving conditions, if you had insufficient tire pressure in one of the rear tires, the 'snap 180° skid' could be even worse and MORE violent.
FWIW - Boxers are fast and easy to remove for working on them; they 'drop out' onto a transmission jack once the axels are pulled from the transaxle.
Scotty strikes me as the kind of guy who decided he knew everything 20 years ago, and hasn't learned anything since. I have had old timer mechanics just like him tell me authoritatively that placing a car battery on concrete will make it discharge - something that hasn't been true since we stopped making the casings out of wood.
Hey Scotty, if you took a V6 engine, and made the V angle 180 degrees does that engine instantaneously become outdated? Of course not, because the boxer/180 degree engine is technologically the same as a V or inline engine. The main reason most manufacturers stick with an inline or V layout is for packaging. The boxer can be mounted low, but it takes up a large area and pretty much leaves you no option but to mount it longitudinally. That means you get the triple whammy of a large engine bay, a transmission tunnel and rear diff that has to fit under your car - all that takes up a lot of space. Your typical manufacturer will instead take an upright engine, and cram it transversely with a transaxle into the shallowest possible engine bay to maximise the amount of cabin space they're left with.
And this isn't 2001 any more, Subaru aren't making EJ25s with graphite coated gaskets. They are no more prone to head gasket problems than any other vehicle.
Tell that to my 2006 outback and any number of subarus I know of that blow them before 100,000 miles. Never heard of that with any other car.
@@lunarpking that hasnt been an issue with Subaru's newer FA engines

Great video! I’ve owned 5 Subaru’s (1992-2005) and yes they have their issues but I just have a lot of fun and enjoy the noise they make with unequal length headers and a nice quiet deep muffler. A stick shift with competent driver and the Boxer is Gold.
The pros and cons about flexfuel engines? Are they better than single fuel engines?
Good question
I would also like to hear an answer on that.
I thought he already did answer this question
@@adcolt54 Really? Send me the link please.
FlexFuel vehicles use components with a far greater resistance to corrosion and they have fuel nozzles that can adjust to greater ranges (as ethanol needs more fuel injected vs gas). IF you have a FlexFuel vehicle and you use E85 you should see far better life out of your engine then using gasoline. It burns much cleaner, smells better, contaminates the oil far less, wears engines much less (see EngineeringExplained video were he goes through the study), produces significantly less pollution, is 100% renewable, and can be carbon neutral
Biggest technical difference between E85 and regular fuel is that high ethanol formulas corrode fuel lines and rubber components faster on older vehicles. But flex fuel cars and new cars in general have modern polymers in the fuel lines to prevent that kind of damage. Fuel sensors tell the ECU what kind of gas you're running so it can alternate the air/fuel mixture, injection etc. Flex fuel burns a lot faster than regular gas so you get less mileage on same volume of gas. It also produces less power. Those are the tradeoffs for using cleaner burning fuels.
Some observations:
1. There are few more pleasing engine sounds than the native sound of the WRX.
2 Corvair was the victim of crusader Ralph
3. The original beetle couldnt keep up with emission requirements.
I bet you think lawnmowers sounds pleasing as well.
I've had 5 old VWs. The sound is great if you like being followed ultra-close by 747 taking off.
I dunno, my Subaru is a best seller. So much for that ancient design.
"This is what most people buy."
I bought my 08 Subaru wrx cuz I love the sound on the boxer engine
My '95 Subaru Liberty has over 400,000 miles on the original engine and is the most reliable car I have owned,I keep it maintained by doing things like changing timing belts every 100,000 miles ,changing oil regularly etc,the car is plenty powerful enough for my needs and is great on fuel so for me boxer engines are fine ! Except the sound of a CORVAIR!
Boxers are great thats why been in aircraft for a century. Scotty! In aircooled design they are optimum for airflow and balance. Fit into cowling perfectly. Too much power makes any engine unrelible in the long run anyway. In the car , especially Suv; makes a Suv handle like a car due to lower center of gravity. Four cylinder Sub is like a six due to great balance..
“Unbalanced Forces Inside.” CLASSIC!! Love it!!
Tucker cars had a water cooled six cylinder engine boxer engine, not air cooled. (Tucker car fan btw) One of my VW's has had one engine rebuild on it and car has 485,000 one owner, miles documented. He (great uncle Bill) was driving it up till one month from his death. When not modified, a boxer engine is very dependable and smooth running powerplant.
Its a damn shame what they did to Tucker. Imagine if he had been left alone and got completely up and running and on the market. I believe all of our modern cars would be a lot more advanced than they currently are. He was a true pioneering genus, the other auto manufacturers were just scared so they had to squash their competition
Tucker has a Bell helicopter engine. Air cooled in aviation but water cooled in the Tucker.
Boxers can handle turbo power like any other engine... When we talk about subarus head gasket problems, its because all ej25s had no reinforcement at the top of the cylinder walls
I live in Tucker, Ga. First one I ever saw was in the local parade. Very cool
I love the boxer engine in my Porsche. The sound it makes at full throttle is pure bliss!!
Great information
Awesome info. Thanks.
My Subaru WRX does 0 to 60 in 5.3 seconds, and has an electronically limited top speed of 140mph. That's out of a turbo charged 2.0 liter boxer engine. It sounds like heaven under full throttle, and I've never considered it to be "slow". And I think it's amazing how much HP and torque Subaru managed to milk from a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder. Judging the performance of boxer engines based on the BRZ's performance is silly. The biggest mistake Subaru made was not offering it with a WRX drive train.
“Rev up your Toyota’s!”
I like the little history lesson you sneak in your videos Scotty. I re-watched this video today and enjoyed it once again.
I work at a used car lot as a mechanic and my boss likes Subaru’s and one thing I have noticed in checking dozens of those cars is I’m surprised when I find one that doesn’t either leak oil or coolent from the head gaskets. Especially ones with the older SOHC timing belt engines. The newer timing chain versions are FAR better engines. Ohh and another thing I find is that people like to remove the heat shields on the cats that rattle like crazy on every one of them. This in turn cooks the oil in the filter and the pan causing even more problems.
Never actually knew what “boxer engine” meant...good video thank you

As a mechanical engineer, boxer engines are by far my favourite engine. You get low CG because the engine is flat, meaning you can corner harder. low vibration by design, which means you can make them rev higher. I have to disagree with scotty that they are niche because they are an "old design". The reason they are niche is because they are more expensive to make than straight or v engines. Straight engines are the cheapest to make which is why they are the most common, and why most research goes into them.
Scotty completely missed the mark on this one. You are dead right.
they are mostly more expensive because of the need for 2 cylinder head and 2 camshaft assembly on each side of the engine, but they make a really nice rumble with the right intake and exhaust design (lenght, diameter, material)
@@tracknar37
I can't imagine a 2.5L, 182 HP engine as having a nice "rumble". What needs to be done to it? I just bought a 2020 Forester Sport.
@@RalphSampson... you need what's called "unequal lenght headers" these will give you the classic subaru Rumble. If you already have these buy a less restrictive silencer
@@RalphSampson... without the headers you will only pretty much have a classic inline 4 engine sound
Hey Scotty , What do you think about inline 6 vs v6 engines, which is more efficient and which is better overall in performance?
Hey Scotty, I'm curious to know your thoughts on the latest Subaru engines (2019-2020). They still seem to be convinced boxer engines are still competitive with other modern engine designs. Have Subaru taken any steps to improve their engines materially since you made this video? Or is it still "dinosaur technology" in your view. Thanks 😊
Subaru went with the boxers mainly due to the safety reliability, especially in a head-on collision, as the engine will tend to go down under the car as oppose to in your lap like other engines.
@@Nalothisal They continue to stay with the boxer engine because it’s something that sets them apart, like every car being AWD too. Some people like them, some people don’t. But the ones that do like them, usually become repeat Subaru owners who are in love with the boxer engine and the AWD system and they rave about it!
@@zackstaa7826 Indeed. I have one myself and besides a few quirks that tend to come with all used cars, she's great! Manual transmission too so that's a bonus for me.
@@Nalothisal I’ve got a 2021 WRX, I bought it with 2,000 miles. It’s a drivers car…manual transmission, excellent handling, but nothing too fancy. No race modes or anything. It pretty much drives like the older tuner JDM cars from the 90s-00s. It pops and bangs a little when you shift….fun little car. It’s far from perfect, it’s not the quickest sports car, but I still get excited every time I hop in my Subaru…it’s a blast to drive.

Porsche GT2RS and GT3RS are literally some of the fastest cars ever made. They use boxers. Yet you argue they are obsolete. You have no idea.
@Deez Nuts theres always a way to make it work :)
Dragsters are the fastest cars ever built. I've yet to see one with a boxer engine!
In terms of the general market they are.
they are high-maintenance, very expensive racing models champ...
@@wilson2000t Because they drive in a straight line - boxer engine is amazing when it comes to handling.
Great video. It all makes common sense. Thumbs up!
I loved my Porsche boxsters! Great cars!
As a relatively new employee at Subaru, I might disagree a bit with the idea of the engine being antique or outdated. We currently have a wait time of several months for the Ascent because we can't build them fast enough.
I thought it started raining at 5:20
Great video really always good vids
I love the way the Boxer 4 cyl sounds. Put an exhaust on it and that deep rumble is just amazing to hear. That's why people love the WRX and Impreza hell even the Forester STI sounds great.
Agreed man the low rumble sounds so damn good

It may not be fast in a straight line buts it's a sports car and corners are where it truly excels, especially with that incredibly low CoG 😎
And it is one of the easiest car to drift around. True, it is not fast. But it can bring so much fun.

Not if it's the Matrix XRS with the 1.8 2ZZGE

Subaru EJ22s are bullet proof its the EJ25 that has the head gasket issues (bad head gasket design, not from thrashing or whatever mentioned) - if you replace those head gaskets with the genuine Subaru EJ25 TURBO head gaskets (different design MLS gaskets) its a permanent fix, if you have a manual EJ25 Subaru and your clutch is due and on original head gaskets leave the transmission in and remove the engine and do the heads at the same time.
The original head gaskets for SOHC EJ25 usually leak externally and cause no major problems and can be ignored for years, the DOHC EJ25 (early EJ25) have internal leaks (coolant-combustion)
If you take your Subaru to the dealership for head gaskets they will replace them with the same part number and it will fail again (usually sooner due to poor workmanship - heads not inspected/machined, poor preparation of heads using a flap wheel etc)
