Does depend on the car though. He mentioned a $35,000 car - you can get a new Corolla for half that.
I've done the sums on this - a good quality entry-level brand new car can cost you a similar amount to buying a 10 -15 year old car and doing ongoing repairs. Provided you keep it for about 7 - 10 years.

When my wife and I were young and didn't know better, we went into a Toyota stealership to get her a new last-year model corolla. It was 16k out the door. They had the 0% financing for 5 years deal going on... but to get the 0% financing, the sticker price would have gone up $1000.
I did some calculating and it was a much better deal to just do a non-0% financing and pay off the car within two or three years. The interest would have only costed about $200-$400 (I forgot how much). So that's what we did, and that's when I realized why the 0% deals were always scams.

Your last point about not trying to get so attached to a car you want: I was so into a TrailBlazer SS because of its sporty design, decent amount of amentites and the roar of the exhaust and the LS2 engine. That vehicle became a dream to own for the past two months...
That ended when I looked up the MPG. Now those TBSS's can go crash and burn.

I mostly agree with you on the extended warranty as for the other stuff, your spot on.
I purchased a brand new F-150 Lariat with the 5.0 V8 in 2015, I purchased the extended Ford warranty because I planned to keep it past the base warranty. I knew that if anything broke on the truck it would be expensive to replace, here is what happened.
At 45K 10K after base warranty the passenger mirror died, the auto-fold computerize collision avoidance wizbang mirror. Replacement cost $1400. at 52K the Vista roof stop working and would not completely open or close, $2800 track system replaced. At 56K, 2 days ago the driver side mirror died (same problem) $1400; total outlay $5200 less $100 deductible per claim. Normally I would never purchase such a thing but I knew in my gut that when this truck broke it would be costly.

I remember car shopping when I first turned 18. I had like $2500 cash. I wanted a truck. I was searching for like a month for a cash car and didn't find anything decent. So I went to a dealership and put $800 down on a 2003 Ford F-150 and drove away. I was naive, the truck was a piece of junk. The starter went bad, the battery needed replacing, tires would need replacing soon, it would run hot at high speeds, the aftermarket radio was trash, and they took out the door speakers from the driver and passenger side doors. Ended up sending the truck back to the dealer within 8 months. Don't get impatient when car shopping and always do a thorough inspect of the car your purchasing.

If you get a lower price deal from a dealer for using their financing make sure there Isn't a PREPAYMENT PENALTY. That is, if you pay it off early, they charge you a chunk of money. If there isn't a booby trap like that, go ahead and make your deal. IMMEDIATELY after closing the deal, drive right down to your CREDIT UNION (NOT bank), borrow the money and pay the loan off.

If you decide to buy a new car here is the best advice. When you arrive at the dealership there will be a smiling car salesman. After you greet, tell him you will be asking questions but, you will NOT answer any of his questions. Always do this. I remember going to a car dealer to buy. The salesman got extremely p***sd because
I would not answer questions and the salesman walked out of that little booth office in an angry huff. I had to get another salesman to finish the deal. The second salesman knew better than to ask questions and got the sale. The main question they ask is "How much do you want to spend?" Never, I repeat NEVER answer this question. As mentioned don't answer any questions. It is interesting and maybe even fun to watch car salesman get angry and frustrated because they can't size you up with probing questions that are not in your best interest to answer.
Remember, this is your money and your rules. Don't answer their questions. Also, as Scotty mentioned that extended warranty is a total scam. It is even worse. I have read the dealership and salesmen pocket the money you paid for it and never contact the insurance outfit to register the policy.

Yea, I got to a Hyundai dealership in CoS because of the incentive of a gift card ($50). He tried to sell me this Tucson. I told him how much I would pay for it. He got pissed that I wouldn't yield. Then he let me test drive other cars and tried to sell those to me. I said no. He got pretty irritated to borderline losing his professionalism. Then another salesman took over. Pretty much that insinuated that I couldn't afford to buy a car.
I went to another dealership and got an Infiniti Q50. I drove to the Hyundai dealership and politely told them to f^^^ off.

I love this guy! 😊💕 I just recently discovered him here in CZcams world. Glad I did! I've already learned so much watching his vids! I don't know that much about cars & I'm planning on buying a good used car (from private owners NOT a used car lot) in a few months & I know Scotty has already taught me so much what to look for! He's the real deal! (plus he has a really funny personality & I think he might down a few tequilas before he films his videos! In any case he's the best!) 😊👍💕

KIA is ok, I guess. But resale is horrible. Engine fire is a problem in some models. A used Toyota would be better unless you got to have new.

Modern cars are a nightmare to install aftermarket radio in. Many times you remove the radio and then other systems fail. You are better off buying what you want from the start...

Great point about warranties. I fell for it once when I bought a Volvo. I thought it would save money if anything went wrong. They didn’t pay when I needed a new regulator for the drivers window. “Called it normal wear and tear.” Those companies are just stealing from people.
Just save a bit of money in a separate account every month or year and have your own warranty if you need it.

I always get a kick how car review sites tend to always over emphasize how fast a car can accelerate 0 to 60 in 8 sec. is slow. you need to upgrade to v8 engine option to do it in 5sec. at expense of extra 10-30 grand and 30% MPG drop. And all I am thinking is where the hell on my suburban roads I would need or want to accelerate like that!? These reviews sound like they are written for drag racers from fast and furious. And they never tell you how dependable and reliable that car expected to be.
