    Heavy relic isn't my cup of tea - the only guitar I remember looking in that state back in the day was Rory Gallagher's, and we used to joke about what on earth it took to do that to a Strat. But I like the idea of very slightly "road-worn" - knocking the pristine edge of things and getting it ready to get some natural bumps and scrapes -- just like almost all of us probably buy pre-washed and faded jeans these days. Sadly, these Custom Shops are so far out of my price range, I'll never need to worry whether they've gone too far with the weathering on some of them for my taste. 😉

    • @rasher009
      @rasher009 Před rokem

      I had a row with my wife once and she threw my Japanese Strat down the stairs at me. It went out of tune, but that was all. I can't remember what I'd done, but I expect I deserved it. I'll call that 'natural bumps and scrapes'. Should have worked in a bank and had a proper haircut, worn a suit, listened to U2.

  • @whiteninja2006
    @whiteninja2006 Před rokem +8

    I'm sure these guitars play and sound amazing... however, I will never understand those insane prices for something that supposedly was designed to be cheap to construct and easy to maintain/repair (not trying to knock the guitar designs themselves, I mean it in the best possible way). I get that there's a name premium and the relic work involved. Same goes for Gibson really, even though I'll stand by my opinion that a Gibson Les Paul should always be more expensive than a Fender Stratocaster or Telecaster, purely because it's more difficult to construct and not designed with the same idea that Leo Fender had in mind. I can understand the collector and vintage market somewhat, too. But I feel those Custom Shop Fenders go against the idea of what Leo Fender had in mind when designing them: Building an amazing instrument as cheap and easy as possible to keep the cost down. I'm sure I'm not the only one. But if people are willing to spend that money on guitars like that, I guess that is reason enough...

    • @djt6546
      @djt6546 Před rokem +1

      Snap. Although I went overboard. I got two from GC to compare. Preferred the look of one and sound of the other 🤬So I ended up keeping both like the nutter I am. Funnily enough I put Josefina Fat 60’s in the guitar that didn’t sound as good to give a different flavour. Did yours come with the aged white parchment pick guard? Mine are both 2017 regular team builds. Only the last two Greg Fessler guitars in this video were master builds. Interesting to see our equivalent guitars (60/61) are now £5000 new in the UK 2023. I think master builds start at £7000 in the UK 2023. The two Strats I got were $3500 each. Pricing and competition for bartering is sooo much better in the US. But it is the country of origin I guess and 2017 is 6yrs ago now. Enjoy your guitar👍

    • @rasher009
      @rasher009 Před rokem

      Mine is May 2009, and I bought it from Guitar Village in Farnham around April 2010 for £2,130, I got them down from £2,300, with no mention that there were Abby pups in there. I only came to find them years later (£1,000?) and I'm sure they didn't know. Brown (oxblood) rectangular case, optional 5-way switch, no alt pick guard. Like you, the shop had two, and I spent an hour playing both before deciding which to have. The only thing I've changed is the knobs, switch tip and pup covers for super-grubby Fatboy relics, which he used to do himself to order in the Isle of Wight before it went to Montreaux, and an oil in paper relic cap. I'll never sell it, and I'll probably never buy another Strat, because nothing will get close, I'm sure. I was very lucky. Right place, right time, right choice. My real love tho is my 2005 CS 51 Nocaster, bought used from Coda in 2008 for just £1,200. It was a light relic then, it's a heavy relic now, 15 years later. That's my no.1.

    • @djt6546
      @djt6546 Před rokem +1

      @@rasher009 Cool guitar story. Around 2019/20 Fender did a limited run of Josefina Fat50’s, Fat60’s and ‘69. They were $500 each. So given how significant her mentor Abby was in Fender history, upwards of £1000 asking price for a set is about right these days. I reckon if you own a guitar which turns out to be really popular in 15yrs time, then it’s nice to know it’s value is keeping up with and sometimes exceeding inflation. Just because of the feel good factor on top of having an awesome instrument. Congrats on finding some real keepers. Enjoy!

And why would I pay extra for it to be built by a "master" who is apparently a little bit better with a screwdriver and hand tools than the average guitar assembler at the Mexican factory? The only place such things really matter is in how well finished the fretwork, nut, and bridge are. All the rest is handled in setup. And there's not a strat on earth that's really worth more than a thousand dollars allowing for cost of living increases and inflation. Fender offered the first relics in 1995, and other companies were already offering them, can something that has lasted 30yrs be called a fad?

      @@peejay6930 exactly. My point being that although availability isn’t a recent thing, it’s been around a while now, the popularity for heavy relics has definitely seen a noticeable increase in the past few years. Albeit bought guitars or diy jobs. Each to their own.

    My car, bought new, had no scratches, dents or evidence of poor parking. My golf clubs, bought new, had no damage, marks on the bounce or evidence of countless hours spent in the rough. Our house, bought new, had no marks on the walls or damage to the plaster. My watch was bought new and has remained fastidiously maintained and cleaned ever since.
    Ergo paying cash for something new artificially aged to look like it’s already had a life is specific to the guitar world. Subjective. But to me, it’s all very odd.

    Am I the only one to notice that they didn't mention the double bound Esquire having a top-load only bridge @3:21? Yeah, the saddles are a "Danny Gatton thing" but the top-load option is all Jim Compilongo. Just sayin' . . .

    That first guitar. I don't think I dislike anything as much as "a color over a sunburst". But it seems very popular? can anyone inform me what reason was behind this back in the 50s/60s? Was it simply people refinishing a guitar but after years of usage the old color came through?

    Might as well not supply a case with relic'd guitars, just a glass cabinet for the blues dentist that bought it to go on the wall.
