    the best fender custom shops are : my partscasters ( tele and strat ) , easy to build these day's , you can buy and type off body , neck , pre loaded pick guard , hardware , ect . on the web , then put it all together , do you're own set up ( wich in my view is something every selfrespecting guitarist should be able to do ) and you're done , it's saves a shitload off money and you don't have to wait 1-2 years for a guitar wich is way to expensive anyways .

    Brilliant video! I think the best thing you implied here is it's always better to get another perspective. We all think we know what we would like, but often there's something we're not seeing. For instance, I always thought I knew what I wanted from my 'ideal guitar' until I bought a custom shop Strat. My first guitar had a U shaped neck and I absolutely hated it, so I've always gone for slim necks. But when I got my CS Strat it had a mid-60s 'chunky' C shaped neck. However the rolled fretboard edges made such a difference. It's an absolute dream to play! I think all Fender CS dealers should invest this time with their customers when it comes to builds, a happy customer is a customer who comes back. Thank you once again for a great video!

    Medium jumbo frets with hand-wound 58's and or 63 pickups with a soft-V neck are what I would be going with if it's a Strat with the '63 body to start. It also should be ash and with a black aged body and white or mint pickguard. If it's a Tele, I'm going for exactly what Jonathan said in regards to the bridge pickup, but would like a PAF-type humbucker in the neck position to get a bit of a Keith Richards-like tone but not too wild. I'd also go with a '52 ash body to start it off with a (and yes, I know, it's basic as hell) black-guard aged butterscotch finish and with a 4 way switch with the controls flipped over so the pickup selector is further away than the typical setup. Both would need to have aged maple fingerboards as well. That's just a preference for myself, but that's the beauty of it all...you can get what you want if you have the money and the patience!! Also...I would choose Todd Krause as my guy even if it takes longer for me to get em. Ron Thorn also would be on my list too, but I really love what Krause has done in the past.
    Honestly, I can't tell you guys how many times I have printed out the forms and filled them out and ready to order as a Masterbuilt. If I ever am finally able to do it, I will most definitely drive my ass from NW GA to NC to order it through you because I see and hear the passion for these guitars and the understanding that everyone is going to go for SOMETHING different than others so you'd be my guys by a long shot!

Of all the custom builders, I guess that’s what they’re called. Which builder would you go with that makes a super fine guitar in that 6-8k range? I get into it with those guys from Driftwood guitars because they really like to laugh and out down other companies like a Taylor for producing more guitars in one day than they do in a year. But I don’t think a high end Taylor is going to sound much worse than one of their custom guitars. What are your thoughts on that? Driftwood actually used your video of the Taylor factory to laugh at the Taylor v class Taylor makes. I know I keep asking questions but I find this stuff so interesting. Thankfully i bought my two Fender Custom Shop strats years ago before todays crazy prices.
    The first was a Fiesta Red "Hank Marvin" and had to go for a masterbuilt to get the spec i wanted.
    it was stunning when i eventually received it.
    The second went badly wrong. it was a team built Bonnie Raitt Strat, and after waiting almost
    2 years, i was in tears when it arrived, the blue burst finish had no burst at all, it was covered
    in fine scratches, all the screw heads were chewed up, a small but visible ding in the headstock.
    I rejected it, and thankfully the dealer helped me to get Fender at their expense upgrade the order
    to a masterbuilt, 18 months later i had the guitar as it should have been.
    I hope my experience of a team built is a rare, but i have heard of other buyers rejecting them.
    Today i would never order any more from Fender, the prices are way too high with no guarantee
    of the quality of what you will receive.
    For the same price of a team built, i have found an excellent luthier capable of building
    a master built guitar at less than team built prices.
    I realise that since they are not Fender Custom Shop models ,they will never sell for anywhere
    near the same price, but they are keepers, and are a delight to play.
    You pays your money and take a big chance.

    Jesus, if you're going to Masterbuilt because you have to have stainless steel frets or pickup combinations, you may want to rethink priorities. $3000 upcharge is a big much.
    Plus at 68 months on the outside of build time, I think you could have ordered and been playing a new Dumble in less time...
    I've been a luthier for 15+ years, and I'm still blown away by $7000 & 8000 Strats and Teles. They are still slabs of alder with a maple neck bolted to it.
    And yes, the neck is probably going to have the most consistent effect on the tone from one guitar to another. With Les Pauls I find a more consistent tonal difference between the slim 60 and rounded 50's than I do with solid body vs chambered vs weight relieved. Though I do find chambered tend to be brighter than the other 2.

    • @rosewoodsteel6656
      @rosewoodsteel6656 Před 3 měsíci

      I agree, Tim. In the end, Fender's are slabs of wood bolted together. What they are charging for their Custom Shop guitars is outrageous to me. And don't get me wrong, I love Fender. But, with that $3,000.00 upcharge for a Masterbuilt, just think of what you could pick up used on Reverb. You could buy your Teambuilt and have another sweet guitar, as well.

    Great video! When y'all pointed out to me that getting a Josefina in a fairly basic 51 P bass build idea I had y'all look at would move it from team built to masterbuilt I had to really think hard. Is that pick up really worth a 3k increase? Should I just go team built with a handwound 55 P pickup like in my CS Time Machine 55 P? (which is awesome) Or should I, if I'm going to pay the upcharge, make it worth it and get more creative and put some real thought into it? I decided to hold off a couple years til my 50th birthday, and maybe take the MB plunge. Y'all did a really great job in just that short interaction I had with you. Better than other's I've seen. (I went through a quote process about 7 years ago before stumbling on my CS 55 P barely used and couldn't pass it up) When I finally do get around to ordering it. Even though you're so far away. You're definitely getting my business. Keep up the great work!

    • @mattwork99
      @mattwork99 Před 2 lety +1

      You can get Josefina pickups in team built guitars! No need to go masterbuilt for that option. I have two team builds on order now, both done in the last two months and they’ve got Josefina pickups in the order. Sorry if I wasn’t understanding your comment correctly!

    • @danielphillipsmusic9145
      @danielphillipsmusic9145 Před 2 lety

      @@mattwork99 interesting, that’s not what I was told. I wonder if it’s different because I was ordering a Bass and they have less options at the teambuilt level. I know Fender in the past ten years at every level really started treating Basses like an afterthought as opposed to just as important as the guitars like they used to when Mike ran the shop. So bassists getting less options wouldn’t surprise me.

    • @mattwork99
      @mattwork99 Před 2 lety +2

      @@danielphillipsmusic9145 sadly I think you’re correct. The bass may be the issue. I took a quick look at the custom shop order form on their web site and while it’s not 100% clear, there didn’t look to be a Josefina option on the bass pickups. It’s there for Strat/Tele. And to be even more confusing they did pull the Josefina team built option on ALL guitars for some time. In fact many videos mention it as not an option anymore. No idea when they brought it back, but I can at least confirm for strat/tele it’s an option.
