    God, I loved my first Big Foot drive. One whole Gig of storage. I was sure I'd never fill that up. Now I've got 20 TB in my home NAS and am looking to upgrade.

    The size of the Quantum drive brought back memories of when I had two SCSI 5.25" drives in a raid array giving a total of 340MB. I had it setup outside of a slimline computer with no 5.25" bays with a separate PSU and the SCSI cable running between the top of the case. Had to start up the SCSI drives first before switching on the computer. How I didn't end up frying myself is a miracle.

    I've come to love mini PCs. I have bought a couple of them in the past few months; a high performance one (7840hs/32GB DDR5/1TB NVMe) to run off a UPS as a low-power backup to my desktop workstation when the power goes out (which unfortunately happens quite often here in Texas), and one super low-power mini PC for my wife's home office. They're great for what they are, especially my wife's mini PC impresses me as it only uses about 7-9W during light usage, which is pretty much all she does. We could run that thing off of a small UPS for literal days.

    I bought a 210MB HDD to augment my 130MB I had in my 386DX40 PC in the early to mid 1990s, I don't recall the exact price but atleast £200 I think. I also upgraded from 4MB to 8MB for £99, then I added an adlib compatible soundcard, upgraded the Trident 1MB SVGA card to a Tseng ET4000 and finally added a maths co-processor. Loved that computer, shame I remember throwing the motherboard setup in the trash in the early 2000s.

    Also for developers. Soon as i have realized that im always using external keyboard, mouse and monitor, both when i work at home and in office, i figured out that i dont need laptop for anything. So, i sold my laptop and bought miniPc as my business development machine, even cheaper than this Peladin one. Just had it upgraded to 64Gigs of Ram.

    Awww man. My friend has a Quantum drive and I begged him to sell it to me or at least let me borrow it LOL.
    He would not even let me hold it.

    Now keep in mind, I live in a Van. What does mini pc be a good idea over a laptop for just basic use? Paying bills, streaming

    • @johnt.848
      @johnt.848 Před měsícem +1

      Nothing except size, as it should be able to stream to your TV if your van has one. Or it can VESA mount to the rear of one to hide it.

    mini pc's can be great emulation machines if they have a decent igpu or a seperate gpu depending on how big it is,

    Some of these mini PC vendors have included malware.

    They were hot due to their price per MB was cheaper than the 3.5" drives, Sadly Bigfoots had a high failure rate. I had a 4GB and 8GB back then. Both died an early death :(

    I like the form factor id just much rather have the Ryzen model. Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m fairly certain that USB 4 is capable of connecting an EGPU, so you use it as a stationary desktop and hate money then buying a razer GPU dock and a decent card you could game

    That single stick of RAM is REALLY holding back the system performance. Add another identical sodimm and watch performance take a big step up, especially for the IGP GFX. Why they ship those things with only one stick of RAM is beyond me. It's really kinda dumb.

    • @johnt.848
      @johnt.848 Před měsícem +1

      Hey Lex, it's good to see at least one other tech savvy person here 😁 I'd say it's due to one stick being cheaper than two sticks totaling the same quantity.

      @@johnt.848
      You're likely right, but the difference is all of $4? Maybe $5. Not including a second stick makes performance much worse than it could be and makes Peladn look bad. For a company trying to rise above the noise, this doesn't help them.

    i say bring back the 5.25 hdds, we could REALLY use them and they would save the optical bay from extinction at the same time! (no redesign necessary really lol). ANd WHY do we not have 5.25 SSDs? We could REALLY have massive space on a SSD that way? They barely even touched much less used the 3.5 inch bay (a ssd with 4 ssds in it technically).
    Its crazy to think how far computers have come sure but its CRAZIER to think just how much they COUILD come even with pre-existing known technology. Technology makers are SLACKING!

    • @01Naaman
      @01Naaman Před měsícem +1

      They're not slacking, they're responding to the market. With ubiquitous high speed internet and poor tech knowledge most people prefer on-demand access rather than on-machine storage. Personally I prefer owning my stuff where possible and still rock a Blu-Ray drive in my tower and while I mostly utilise MP3s they're nearly all ripped from a CD. I have given up on games though as, barring GOG, that appears to be a lost battle

    • @nushnume
      @nushnume Před měsícem

      Why? There's no need for optical drive bays anymore and you can fit a few TB of storage on 3.5 and 2.5 inch drives just fine. Also SSDs don't work that way and a 2.5 inch SSD is basically empty inside and still has a few TB. Bigger physical size doesn't mean better lol

    • @patg108
      @patg108 Před měsícem

      @@01Naaman wrong its just overcompensation for things that they don't want to do but COULD and SHOULD have by now.
      Focusing on my points would solve or at least alleviate the problems you have.
      We are NOT pushing the practical limits of technology, and the conspiracy theory is that they KNOW what would happen with them.
      Why is there not a blu ray drive in every pc? Much less a improved optical media?
      Why not 3.5 or 5.25 inch ssds?
      Why break what is fixed? ATX power supply standards.
      Why is there no sata 4? Why haven't they given us SAS or at least something better?
      Why is there less options on a modern motherboard than a retro?

    • @patg108
      @patg108 Před měsícem

      @@nushnume but there is ALWAYS a need for more storage and 5.25 inch bays could be preserved via filling them with 5.25 inch ssds
      And yes they COULD work that way, its all just a set of chips on the inside anyways, just using a bigger PCB to fit more.
      Its a shame that they aren't taking advantage of that and are instead just baiting people into loving the RGB all the things and trolling with ultra ultra wide curved monitors

    • @patg108
      @patg108 Před měsícem

      case design modern or retro could EASILY accommodate that.
      AND WHY waste space on the board for M2 /nvme when it could be a simple cable or 2 or whatever run to a mount in a bay?

  • @nushnume
    @nushnume Před měsícem +1

    Very poor performer but at least it's 200$. Still for that money i'd just get a used sff optiplex and put a gpu in it. Not as small but will definetly outperform this by a lot
