To be honest, an AMD A-series APU’s was to compete with Intel’s Celeron and Atom series processors. They were ‘budget’ systems with integrated Radeon IGPU (Integrated Graphics Processing Unit) as an edge over the then Celeron’s as Intel didn’t really go into the integrated GPU’s at the time. When Intel did start having IGPU’s, they used their own hardware. But most of the time, apart from office and low-budget systems, systems always built with a GPU add-on, bypassing the IGPU’s anyway.
The system you got is still usable for general use, very low-end gaming and/or retro-gaming machines.

I have a couple of them also and they're fine for what they can do. I don't play AAA games after 2010 anyway because I refuse to subscribe to the "games as a service" concept and I am not into online multiplayer gaming - I'd rather get my real friends over for beer, pizza or BBQ and a LAN party two or three times a year.
I also just run Linux (no Windows since Windows 7) so I can play all of the games I want to through WINE on older hardware.

I could be wrong, but I suspect that your 'Frankenstein' graphics card had an issue was because I noticed that you moved your HDMI cable AFTER you had powered the system on. In my experience, I have always had trouble with HDMI cables if I move them after the PC is powered on. It generally needs to be plugged in BEFORE the power is turned on to work properly.

An A10-9700 won't fit in that board. The A10-9700 is a socket AM4 CPU and that board is socket FM2+. The A10-7800 is one of the fastest CPUs for that socket. You could try to find an AMD pro A10-8850B, but that is only about another 10-15% faster.

I pulled the board out of an HP Pavilion 500-590 to temporarily replace my motherboard that bit the dust. The bios update allowed higher end cpu's up to a 4790T (motherboard's limitations is 85 watts) to be used and the ability to turn off the annoying fan error it gives if a fan is unplugged. Totally worth the update. Went from 8.1 to Windows 10 and it did something weird to the bios, now the fan error is back without the ability to disable it, with or without the drive even being plugged in. Pretty weird issue.
As for your graphics card problem, I believe it has to do with the card's device ID and updating the bios allows it to "see" it.

  • @michaellegg9381

There is something wrong!! Driver issues maybe or bios not set up correctly maybe!! The bulldozer CPU is at 98% in cyberpunk and fortnight and its definitely able to load up the GPU to 95% or more so it capable of pushing the GPU to the 98 to 100% but it keeps dropping from 98% utilisation to 0% and jumps up and down and up and down.. normally it won't load the GPU to a higher value and stick solid at 20 or 30% GPU while the CPU is pegged to 100% but thats not what's happening its keeping a consistent CPU load of 98% and the GPU is dancing around from 0% (which regardless of the CPU should not even get to 0%) but it loads the GPU to 98% so its likely a driver or something else. Because if the cpu could not load the GPU that high it would still have a stable low figure even if it was only like 2% it should not be jumping around..

I ended up taking off the shroud and mounting a fan from some old AMD platform directly to the cooler. I found the wiring diagram and was able to get the new fan up and running off the GPU temp sensors. I took a bit of cable sleeve off an old LED lighting kit and alongside some zip ties made a pretty decent looking card in spite of the jankiness. The real plus was that it cooled and performed better than it ever had.

Ironically AMD , A6, A8, and A10 are all based on the XBOX360 architecture. Originally the first set of xbox 360's that got the red ring of death had an IBM power PC 3 core 3 thread power PC CPU. The cpu's were causing the red ring of death as it would warp the boards and the solder balls would crack and disconnect.... So in 2008 to 2010 AMD under a NDA hush agreement with microsoft redesigned the CPU and GPU all in one for the APU found in the corona mother boards at 40nm, versus teh older CPU and GPU 90nm chipsets. The reason why AMD makes the best APU's (CPU/GPU) all in one is because of that relationship with microsoft and the 360. The final versions of the xbox 360 were the most efficient, long lasting and best version of the xbox 360. If you put these AMD chipsets to operate under linux/FAT32 it will free up about 25% of the CPU computation, but its operating as expected in windows.
