    This is why I love historical deep-dives from Adam or Jirard. I've never played any of these games, haven't had a Playstation more than a few years for Spider-Man, and am not even a big fan of the horror genre but the sheer amount of time and effort put into a labor of love made this into a really compelling story.

    I love that Adam had a shout out to Legacy of Kain there at the end. That franchise and the Silent Hill 1-3 story are probably the best narratives in gaming history and it's such a shame that Legacy of Kain in particular has sort of been lost to time with Square owning it now and being content to pump out unoriginal Tits Raider titles over finishing the Kain story or even remaking them with modern tech.

    I never played the original Silent Hill until a few years ago, when I did I decided to do a blind playthrough: no guides, no videos just a pen and paper and my wits. Best decision ever as I worked my way through the puzzles and eventually finished the game. One part that sticks out to me is the piano puzzle in the school: the one where you had to press the keys in the right order to progress. That was a fun headscratcher for me to figure out.

    I can’t tell you how amazing it is to see Xplay making a return. Before we had infinite video game channels, before Angry Video Game Nerd, before we had CZcams in general… we had Xplay. I don’t think people realize what a pioneer this show was and considering CZcams is now the dominant media platform, how influential it ultimately was.
    There was a time when I watched Xplay every night, 7 days a week. It probably shaped my sense of humor more than any other film or show I watched as a kid. Adam is a truly unique and understated comedic personality and Morgan was one of my first crushes.

    My best Silent Hill experience would have to be walking into that room in Silent Hill 4 The Room with a giant Eileen head convulsing and twitching everywhere. There's never been a more horrifying video game room I'd refuse to return to.

  • @84jesterx
    @84jesterx Před 2 lety +6

    I know there's always a "more than one situation" for any game developer, but Yamaoka's sound design MADE Silent Hill what it is for me personally. From the opening track in the first game's CGI intro, to the literal barrage of grinding rusty-metal noises in the the third game...sound is KEY in horror. If you over do it, and you get jump-scare schlock like IT. Done well, and you get literal unforgettable tension like in Hereditary. I'm glad Resident Evil not only went "back to basics," but also took cues from their friendly rivals.

  • @Smarfton
    @Smarfton Před 2 lety +8

    The 1st time I played this stood out to me. I remember roaming the streets after the diner and being freaked out. All the homes, empty. The convenience store, abandoned. Roads out of town just broken off into the void of mists.
    Then there's Midwich elementary which was creepy at first--then come the clocktower shift and, goddamn. I can't remember another time playing a horror game that I was legitimately afraid to move around. There was nothing I had played before this that prepared me for Silent Hill, even Resident Evil 1 or 2!
    Couple with the fact Harry is just a normal person made it even more terrifying. I remember the Prima guide I had/still have devoting time to hammer that home, on how he's just a writer and doesn't know how to use guns so he's bound to miss shots, thus don't fight enemies if you can.
    I would love a return to Silent Hill, if it follows the playstyle and aesthetic of the originals. No need for complicated combat buttons or cinematic damage. Nothing dramatic with gameplay, let the story and the its elements dictate the content and leave it to drum up emoitons in the player, rather than holding their hands with programmed jump scares or controlled moments where the devs are laying in to the player to be scared here.

    My first experience with silent Hill was a demo disk that had it. I think I was 8 at the time and I didn't get very far into it. In my later years, I picked up a copy at EB games and got all the way through it. I loved every bit of it.

    Oh wow yes I remember the demos that used to come with ordering pizza. The 90s really were a magical time.

    Yes Adam we did those things like read magazines and played demos of games and rented video games from movie stores.... Your not crazy 😂. I will admit it's nice to hearing you talk enthusiastically about games again.

    Yes Adam, I DID live through that era. In fact my friend in the Navy bought me a copy of that Playstation magazine because I owned Gex at the time.

    Along side Silent Hill 3, this is My favorite of the whole franchise. SO Many memories of playing this with a buddy of mine until 3am, then have to walk all the way back Home in a Town that is known for having a Lot of morning fog... Yay!

    The first Silent Hill was seminal in my ability to see games as a form of art and not just a fun pastime. It was so engrossing and unlike anything out at the time, even Resident Evil, which was always a little more shlocky B-movie horror to Silent Hill's atmosphere of dread. The thing that sticks out in my memory as the best scare in the game was when you enter the bathroom in the hospital, and you hear a baby crying in one of the stalls. You know something terrible is going to happen, but you open the stall door anyway.......aaaand nothing happens. There is nothing there, but the cries stop as well. And it isn't followed up on, or resolved. It's just....horror. God I love this game.

    I played Silent Hill 1 but not any of its sequels. I know, I missed out on SH 2... :P
    One thing that SH 1 did so masterfully was in creating a constant sense of tension and dread. The ever-present fog, the threat of the unknown, the sound design and music, and, of course, the radio. That damn radio. XD
