Shane I too was a bit mystified and jealous when these young kids blew up in the 90s and initially dismissed them as another nirvana clone but I was happily mistaken and they eventually started to grow on me when I saw them on Conan actually performing this song from their second album freakshow 97 maybe? I was even more impressed with how they matured and their album Diorama is one of my favorite albums of all time in fact, an eclectic mix of sonic freakishly good jams. Thanks as always and be excellent to each other everyone. Party on, Espi

yeah they started as nirvana clones I think, but their catalogue actually really developed and was quite diverse as time went on. They showed growth. Haven't heard much at all about them in recent years though..

The vocals on the record are a lot more straight forward but Daniel likes to have fun with it live doing weird falsettos, death growls, banshee howls, jazz scatting whatever

They were my first concert when I was 12 (they were all 15 & 16), so I grew up with them. They definitely started off as a grunge band but by the end they were more art rock than anything else.

I probably will be the only persob you will hear the name of this band from, but please, check out Yearning - Returning and Yearning - Evershade. This is the band who became "COLOSSEUM". But main musician passed away in 2010 sadly. "The River" by Colosseum is the song which represents funeral doom metal genre the best possible way in my opinion. Its not super long and you will not regret listening to it. Regards.

Great band, with lots of great songs..but not the best song nor performance... It was great when I was 14 but def didn't age well. Even Daniel Johns (lead) admitted later on that he didn't like the song much but they still played it until much later as it remained a crowd favorite. Here's a later, much better version of it: czcams.com/video/Y4aEyM8kIHM/video.html
Their best stuff came after 99 until they broke up in 2011. (Freak was in 97)

to me silverchair where the DOWN UNDER Nirvana but not in a bad way... like if Kurt had a younger brother so they just sounded a bit the same voice and music wise BUT again in a good way...wonder why Dave Grola never asked Silverchairs lead singer to sing a Nirvana Song with them at the HALL OF FAME show would have been way cool then the 3 Under Powered Women Singers they Had Sing EWWFF

If they had released Freak instead of Abuse me in the U S as their first single off their 2nd album (Freakshow) I think they would have been more successful there. I don’t think their young fan base could really relate to Abuse Me. It sounded kinda gay before gay was accepted. Huge blunder by the record company who might have been more interested in radio air play there at the time.

Wtaf??? That was a very weird performance. The girly squel, the licking the mic, the screamo..omg. the tempo was too slow. When he kicked in the guitar properly at the start the drums came in too slow. Was like ac/dc's painfully slow tempo of highway to hell at the grammys.

Unique idea of mixing various “voices”, but I can’t see myself cranking this up. Knowing my luck, I’d be pulling into a gas station with a cute girl smiling and this kid would be “singing” as that weird lady.

He totally felt like a Freak in Australia where most other bands in their prime were boring by comparison and got far less attention and being so young they got so much attention worldwide so quickly and Before social media. Also the only Grunge band in Australia when they started. In Newcastle. Aussie guys were mostly into football/sport, getting pissed and the bravado was strong back then. Daniel didn’t really fit in when being himself the way Chris and Ben would have, especially Ben. People thought Daniel was gay or just acts gay when being gay was basically seen as a disease. While the other bands were party animals Daniel was more of a loner/reserved. Look at Clint from the Aussie band The Butterfly Effect during the late 90s. He would have fit in very well in Newcastle and just about anywhere in Australia.
