Highlights of Arsenal vs Chelsea, 3rd April 1971. Also includes discussion on bad tackling & the search for a song for Arsenal fans to sing at the FA Cup Final. Taken from ITV's "The Big Match".
Yes but for very different reasons. Houseman and his wife along with another couple were killed by a drunken MP's son (and Bullingdon Club member) veering into their car with a Maserati. The family of a very nice bloke who did a lot for junior soccer and various charities were made orphans. Kennedy was never a saint - nor were his health misfortunes borne with much grace. A bull of a player though.
I work as a cleaner at Julian Hospital in Norwich, we have Peter Simpson as a patient, I talk to him alot, he's one of my fave patients, its a bloody shame he's got dementia, heading them heavy footballs, Number 6, bless him
@@randybackgammon890 think you're getting your Peters mixed up. Simmo was a clean defender. Team mate Peter Storey was the Birty Dastard of the side, back when every team had one!!
The Arsenal song for the Cup Final....."Good old Arsenal , we`re proud to say that name , and while we sing this song we`ll win the Game ".....Done to the tune of "Rule Brittania"....Still sing it now ...UP THE ARSENAL
Fantastic picture and sound quality... You can hear individual people in the crowd. I think this sort of sound coverage was changed, when during the 1974 FA Cup final, swearing was heard live on TV.
Always liked watching John Radford playing for Arsenal and my favourite Chelsea player around this time (though not playing in this match) was Ian Hutchinson.
I was one of the 61.000 fans that day...I think that particular result showed the club we could win it. Most of the previous results had gone Chelsea's way.
George Graham and Pat Rice playing for Arsenal in this match and later went on to manage them and John Hollins, David Webb and Eddie McCreadie doing the same for Chelsea. Plus Graham playing for Arsenal in this match having previously played for Chelsea and Hollins and Alan Hudson playing for Chelsea in this match and then later going on to play for Arsenal.
Not much has changed, I mean we play at a different stadium, have different owners, play in a different competition and have a different badge but apart from that it's still the same.
First match I ever attended as a 10 year old. I was opposite the camera right at the back of the left corner holding on to the railings. Ray Kennedy RIP.
Arsenal played Derby in a replayed replay at Leicester and Leicester's pitch was woeful...hence over land and sea...and Leicester. Check the FA cup run in 1972, 2-2 at the Baseball Ground, 0-0 in front of 63.000 in the afternoon due to the 3 day week and a final victory at Leicester on a cold wet night with a sand covered pitch... Over land and sea....and Leicester. I was there.
In the past 3 seasons bayern have spent 160 million pound on players. And the reason why chelsea were a second tier team is because they had no money and were bankrupt whereas bayern and madrid have always been some of the waelthiest teams which is why they have always been good. Money in football has always equalled success. Don't kid yourself
Arsenal won their first domestic double that season and Chelsea went on to win their first European trophy. If London had a gang culture this would be the Bloods and the Crips.
It should be noted that Bayern spend no where near as much as Chelsea, also, the difference is that Bayern and Madrid fielded some of the greatest teams the world has ever seen before they began spending, Chelsea were a shit 2nd division team before the Russian blood money.
@thomask36 of course, it was such a great time to watch footie those days, unlike the rubbish u get these days. they worry about there fat pay cheques.
there are teams in the 2nd divison with more european trophies than man utd, whats your point? its allright for teams like bayern and madrid to spend money but as soon as chelsea a line is somehow crossed. no line is crossed and you know why? because we can afford it.
do you even know why 'and leicester' is used in the song? it has nothing to do with arsenal, all to do with the dark world of football thuggery and chesleas long running fued with leicester fans, hence the sarcasm 'and leicester'
Bertie mee said to Don Revie. Have you heard of the north bank Highbury.. Don said no I don't think so... but I've heard of the gelderd agro... na na na na na etc...
They had problems in the 1970s with debt after their stadium redevelopment went awry with the east stand run into various problems They owed £4,000,000 in 1977, and couldn't buy players which is why they went into such decline until 1994, and reached a cup final, and although 0-4 losers to man its that season, they made the cup winners cup semi final the following season, and people were watching Chelsea anxiously as a slumbering giant rousing from its sleep, and in 1997, chelsea announced their return with a 2-0 f.a. cup win
Ha ha we have surpassed Arsenal since those days Arsenal will never win the Champions League and you will never have a player like the king himself Peter Osgood !!! Herb 1967-
@Tuff Gong We don't need a Champions League trophy to be bigger than Chelsea. We've already got 13 league titles in the bag + 3 consecutive league titles from 33,34,and 35. Chelsea have never won a hattrick of league titles. Without daddy Roman you're club is the shittest
aww whats wrong cant take it. so when real madrid spent 47 mil on zidane about 15 years ago and he won them the european cup they didnt buy it. aww little jealous gooner
Ah, the old north bank, how I miss you.
Tragic end to the lives of Ray Kennedy and Peter Houseman. Thanks for the memories lads!

Nice post, thanks very much!
Jimmy Hill way ahead of his time as usual, with the tackling from behind conversation.
We won the double that year 🤩
I was 9 and in the North Bank with my dad. What a year that was.R.I.P. dad.
The only team to buy it, not win it.
city too though. Chelsea and man city are two reasons why modern football is rubbish

The History is to be Made....
In nineteen eighty-five, I remember meeting Alan Hudson and Tony Waddington in Chester. Of course they completely 'blanked' me.
At least Madrid had actual history when they won it, there are teams in 2nd division with more history than Chelsea
You sound jealous and bitter, pathetic
The brilliant Brian Moore.
@regvarney almost unnoticable. It felt great to both outsing and outplay them at their home
Back then also Rice ❤️✌️

Pathetic
Madrid story starts very similar as does bayerns they were both cash manufactured giants very much like chels an city as were a lot of European clubs.
